To watch a DVD, Blu-ray, or Ultra HD Blu-ray movie, use an Xbox Series X model with a disc drive and install the Blu-ray Player app from the console Store. The Xbox Series X Digital Edition has no disc drive, so it cannot play physical movie discs.
Check that your Xbox Series X has a disc drive
Physical movie playback depends on the console model, not just the Series X name. Microsoft’s UK Xbox Series X Digital Edition listing describes it as digital-only and says it does not play physical discs. You need a disc-drive Xbox Series X for DVD, Blu-ray, or Ultra HD Blu-ray playback.

Set up movie playback
- Connect and turn on the console. Set it up with your TV as usual; no special TV setting for basic disc playback is specified in Xbox’s guidance.
- Install the app. Open the Store on the console, find the Blu-ray Player app, and download it. Xbox Wire’s FAQ says the app is required to play movie discs.
- Insert the movie disc. The disc-drive Xbox Series X supports movies on DVD, Blu-ray, and Ultra HD Blu-ray discs.
- Open Blu-ray Player if needed. If playback does not begin automatically, launch the Blu-ray Player app and select the disc.
Which movie disc formats work?

Xbox’s format list is in its Series X|S FAQ. It establishes support for those movie formats, not for every individual disc or authoring variant.

- The new DVD drive will need to be “flashed” with your console’s security key or will need to have your old drive's board swapped into the new replacement drive. That's Mean That You need to transfer the PCB board from the old one to the new one since it's paired to the Xbox.

If a movie disc will not play
- Confirm the console has a disc drive. Digital-only models cannot read physical discs.
- Check the format. Confirm whether the disc is a DVD, standard Blu-ray, or Ultra HD Blu-ray movie disc.
- Inspect the disc. Look for visible damage and make sure the Blu-ray Player app is installed and open.
- Check region markings. Blu-ray region codes may appear on the disc or the back of its case. Sony explains that region-coded discs may be restricted to players for the matching region in its Blu-ray Disc region-code guidance. The available Xbox guidance does not establish a complete Series X-specific region matrix, so check the disc packaging and do not assume every imported disc will work.
