For a first, story-focused watch, follow Dragon Ball, then choose either Dragon Ball Z or Dragon Ball Kai, continue with Dragon Ball Super, watch Dragon Ball Super: Broly, then Dragon Ball Super: SUPER HERO, and finish the newer main-continuity material with Dragon Ball Daima. Treat Dragon Ball GT as an optional alternate branch rather than a required sequel to Super.
That route preserves Goku’s development and introduces the transformations in a sensible order without making you watch duplicate film retellings. The checklist below also shows where every major Saiyan transformation belongs.

The recommended Dragon Ball story order
The franchise is large: a 2026 viewing guide counts more than 600 episodes and 24 movies across six main series, although that total can change as new releases appear. The official Dragon Ball chronology lists the franchise works, while Toei’s catalog supplies the series and episode structure. For a first viewing, use this order:
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →| Order | Work | Why it belongs here |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Dragon Ball | Introduces young Goku, the Dragon Balls, Bulma, Master Roshi, Krillin and the original adventure format. |
| 2 | Dragon Ball Z or Dragon Ball Kai | Covers the Saiyan, Frieza, Cell and Majin Buu conflicts. Choose one presentation of this era. |
| 3 | Dragon Ball Super | Continues after Z with divine power, new universes and the Universe Survival Saga; Toei’s official episode list ends at episode 131. |
| 4 | Dragon Ball Super: Broly | Fits most cleanly after the Super television story for a first pass and expands modern Saiyan history. |
| 5 | Dragon Ball Super: SUPER HERO | Later Super-era film set after the events that establish the modern cast and its new generation. |
| 6 | Dragon Ball Daima | A later original anime work listed in the official franchise chronology. |
| Optional branch | Dragon Ball GT | A separate continuity path watched after Z; it is not required to understand Super. |
Do not put GT between Super episodes, and do not alternate GT with Super. They follow different continuity paths, so switching back and forth makes character histories and transformations appear contradictory.

Start with the original Dragon Ball
Dragon Ball is not a prologue that can be skipped. It establishes why the Dragon Balls matter, how Goku’s unusual strength develops, and why the relationships among Goku, Bulma, Krillin, Master Roshi and the wider cast carry emotional weight in later series.
What this series establishes
- Goku begins as a child living in the wilderness, with a monkey-like tail and extraordinary martial-arts potential.
- Bulma’s search for the Dragon Balls creates the first long-running quest and introduces the world’s technology, travel and rival factions.
- Training, tournaments and the Red Ribbon Army build the combat language that Z later enlarges to a galactic scale.
- The original series explains important names, locations and rivalries that later episodes assume you already know.
Even viewers primarily interested in transformations should watch this stage. The contrast between child Goku’s grounded martial arts and the later planet-scale battles makes every power increase easier to understand.
Choose Dragon Ball Z or Dragon Ball Kai
Z and Kai cover the same broad Z-era story, but they are different viewing experiences. Watching both in full is optional comparison viewing, not a requirement for story comprehension.
| Consideration | Dragon Ball Z | Dragon Ball Kai |
|---|---|---|
| Pacing | Original broadcast presentation, including the longer pacing associated with its television run. | Recut for a tighter route through the core story. |
| Filler tolerance | Includes more material outside the central manga-adapted plot. | Generally favors the central manga-adapted storyline. |
| Presentation | Uses the original broadcast-era timing, music and voice-track choices for the release you find. | Uses a revised presentation; voice cast, music and editing can differ by release. |
| Best fit | Viewers who want the historical broadcast experience and do not mind a slower route. | Viewers who want to reach the major arcs and transformations efficiently. |
| Availability | Catalogs differ by country and change over time, so check the legal services available in your region. | |
If you are unsure, choose Kai for a first story-focused run and return to selected Z episodes later for the original broadcast feel. If the soundtrack, dub cast or broadcast history matters more than speed, choose Z. Neither choice changes the basic order of the Saiyan transformations.
Follow Super after the Z-era story
Dragon Ball Super is the post-Z continuation. Toei’s official episode listing runs through episode 131, ending the televised Universe Survival material. Super introduces divine ki, additional universes and techniques that are not simply higher numbered versions of the old Super Saiyan ladder.
Why Super must follow Z or Kai
- Super assumes you know the consequences of the Majin Buu conflict and the relationships formed during Z.
- Its opening divine-power story builds directly on Goku and Vegeta’s earlier transformations.
- The later tournaments make more sense when you recognize the difference between a transformation and a technique.
Some home-video and streaming editions label arcs or specials differently. Use the series’ episode numbering and the official catalog rather than trying to insert every recap or promotional special into the main sequence.

Where the Super films fit
For a first pass, watch the modern Super films after the television series. This avoids interrupting the show with retellings of material that the series itself covers and preserves the reveal of the newer forms.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Dragon Ball Super: Broly
Place Broly after the Super television story. The film expands Saiyan history, reframes Broly for the modern continuity and works best once you understand the relationship between Goku, Vegeta and the Frieza-era legacy.
Dragon Ball Super: SUPER HERO
Watch SUPER HERO after Broly. It is a later Super-era story with a stronger focus on the next generation and the Earth-based cast. Watching it before the earlier Super material can spoil character developments and make its power levels seem unearned.
What about strict in-universe chronology?
A film-by-film chronological order is possible, but it is not the simplest first experience because several older films retell, remix or sit beside television events. The official chronology lists the films as franchise works, while the practical viewing approach is to group the modern Super films after the television series. Rewatchers who want every story in internal timeline order can build a separate film timeline after completing the main route.
Watch Dragon Ball Daima as a later main-continuity work
Dragon Ball Daima is a later original anime work listed in the official chronology. Put it after the Super-era television story and films when you want a straightforward first watch. Its placement in a personal marathon is less important than completing the earlier Goku, Vegeta and Super material first, because that gives you the context for the characters and the world it revisits.

Keep Dragon Ball GT in its own branch
GT is optional. Watch it after finishing Z or Kai if you want a separate continuation, but do not treat it as a bridge between Super and Daima. GT is not required to understand Super, and its signature transformation, Super Saiyan 4, belongs to GT’s continuity.

Why GT causes order confusion
- GT was produced as a separate continuation rather than as a chapter that must be inserted into the Super sequence.
- Super uses a different continuation path with divine forms and Ultra Instinct.
- Super Saiyan 4 is therefore not the next step after Super Saiyan Blue or Ultra Instinct.
A practical completionist route is Dragon Ball, Z or Kai, Super, the two modern Super films, Daima, and then GT as a clearly labeled alternate branch. You can also watch GT immediately after Z before starting Super, provided you understand that you are temporarily following a different continuity.
Every major Saiyan transformation in story order
The names below follow the main Super continuity unless marked as GT. Subtitles, dubs, games and merchandise sometimes use different labels. In particular, Super Saiyan God Super Saiyan and Super Saiyan Blue are two names for the same form.
| Transformation or state | First major story placement | How to recognize its role |
|---|---|---|
| Super Saiyan | Frieza-era climax of Dragon Ball Z or Kai | The foundational golden-haired Saiyan transformation. |
| Super Saiyan 2 | Cell conflict and later Z material | A more advanced Super Saiyan form showcased most dramatically during the Cell-era story. |
| Super Saiyan 3 | Majin Buu conflict | Goku displays it in his battle with Majin Buu; it is a Z-era form, not a Super debut. |
| Super Saiyan God | Battle of Gods material beginning the Super era | A divine-ki transformation that opens the modern power system. |
| Super Saiyan God Super Saiyan, also called Super Saiyan Blue | Early Super-era development after God | A Super Saiyan transformation using Super Saiyan God power; blue hair and eyes define its appearance. |
| Super Saiyan Blue Kaioken | Universe Survival Saga | Goku layers Kaioken over Blue, shown with a red aura around the blue aura. |
| Ultra Instinct Sign | Universe Survival Saga | An incomplete Ultra Instinct state with a blue-white aura that cannot be held for long. |
| Perfected or complete Ultra Instinct | Later mastery in the same broad tournament storyline | A more complete command of the Ultra Instinct technique rather than a numbered Super Saiyan form. |
| Super Saiyan 4 | Dragon Ball GT branch | GT’s defining transformation; keep it outside the Super sequence. |
How each transformation enters the story
Super Saiyan
The first Super Saiyan transformation appears during the Frieza-era climax of Z. It is presented as a pivotal emotional and narrative breakthrough, not merely a routine upgrade. Watching the earlier Dragon Ball and Saiyan material first makes the transformation’s stakes and visual change meaningful.
Super Saiyan 2
Super Saiyan 2 is developed and showcased during the Cell conflict and remains relevant in later Z material. It follows the original Super Saiyan form, but the story ties its importance to character growth and restraint as much as to combat strength.
Super Saiyan 3
Goku first uses Super Saiyan 3 in the Majin Buu conflict. The official Dragon Ball feature describes it as the form Goku displays in his battle with Majin Buu. It is the last major numbered Super Saiyan form introduced in the Z-era main route.
Super Saiyan God
Super Saiyan God arrives with the Battle of Gods material that begins the Super-era story. It introduces divine ki and changes how the series describes power, training and the limits of ordinary mortal transformations.

Super Saiyan God Super Saiyan, or Super Saiyan Blue
The official Dragon Ball feature defines Super Saiyan God Super Saiyan as the result of a Super Saiyan God turning Super Saiyan and identifies the blue-haired, blue-eyed appearance as Super Saiyan Blue. If one release says Super Saiyan God Super Saiyan and another says Super Saiyan Blue, they are referring to the same form, not two separate stages.
Super Saiyan Blue Kaioken
During the Universe Survival Saga, Goku combines Kaioken with Blue. The official feature describes the red aura layered over Blue’s blue aura. Because Kaioken is a technique applied to a transformation, this state should not be counted as a wholly separate Super Saiyan level.
Ultra Instinct Sign
Ultra Instinct Sign is an incomplete version of the gods’ Ultra Instinct technique. The official feature says it cannot be held for long and describes its blue-white aura. It is best understood as a temporary state of incomplete mastery, not Super Saiyan 4 and not another numbered form.
Perfected or complete Ultra Instinct
Later in the same broad tournament storyline, Goku reaches a more complete mastery of Ultra Instinct. The distinction matters: Ultra Instinct is a technique or state associated with movement and reaction, whereas Super Saiyan forms are transformations in the Saiyan power lineage.
Super Saiyan 4
Super Saiyan 4 is the defining GT transformation. It has no place between Super Saiyan Blue and Ultra Instinct in a Super-focused watch, because GT follows a separate continuity branch.
Two useful ways to plan your marathon
The streamlined story route
- Watch Dragon Ball in full.
- Choose Kai or Z, rather than committing to both.
- Watch all 131 listed Super episodes.
- Watch Broly, then SUPER HERO.
- Watch Daima.
- Add GT only if you want the alternate branch.
This route minimizes duplicated material and presents the transformation progression in the order most new viewers expect.
Best Value

- Powerful Pass-Through Charging: Supports up to 85W pass-through charging so you can power up your laptop while you use the hub. Note: Pass-through charging requires a charger (not included). Note: To achieve full power for iPad, we recommend using a 45W wall charger.
- Transfer Files in Seconds: Move files to and from your laptop at speeds of up to 5 Gbps via the USB-C and USB-A data ports. Note: The USB C 5Gbps Data port does not support video output.
- HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.
- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
The broadcast-history route
- Watch Dragon Ball.
- Watch the original Z broadcast.
- Watch the Super television series.
- Add the modern Super films.
- Watch Daima.
- Return to Kai, selected Z episodes or GT for comparison.
This option is better for viewers interested in how pacing, music, dubbing and editing changed between releases. It takes substantially longer because Z and Kai overlap in story coverage.
Common watch-order mistakes
Starting with Super
Super introduces divine forms quickly, but beginning there removes the childhood, training and rivalry context that gives those forms significance. Start with Dragon Ball unless you are deliberately revisiting only the modern era.
Watching Z and Kai as if they were consecutive sequels
Kai is a recut presentation of the Z-era route, not a sequel to Z. Watching both from beginning to end repeats the same broad story.

Inserting every older movie into the episode list
Many older films have complicated relationships with the television continuity. For a first pass, finish the television story and then watch the modern Super films. A strict film chronology is a separate project.
Calling Blue and Super Saiyan God Super Saiyan different forms
They are equivalent names in official Dragon Ball materials. Treating them as separate levels creates a false extra step in the transformation ladder.
Placing Ultra Instinct on the Super Saiyan ladder
Ultra Instinct is a technique or state. It is not simply Super Saiyan 5, and it should be tracked separately from the numbered Saiyan transformations.
Putting Super Saiyan 4 into Super
Super Saiyan 4 belongs to GT. Keep a visible branch in your watch list so GT’s transformations are not mistaken for Super continuity milestones.

If you want a printed companion for the Z-era story, VIZ identifies the Dragon Ball Z Complete Box Set as containing all 26 volumes, along with an exclusive poster and collector’s booklet. It follows the manga version of the Z-era material rather than replacing the anime watch order, so it is best used alongside or after the series.
Final checklist
- Dragon Ball comes first.
- Choose either Z or Kai for the main Z run.
- Super follows Z and its official episode list ends at 131.
- Watch Broly and SUPER HERO after the Super television story for the simplest first pass.
- Place Daima after the Super-era material in your marathon.
- Treat GT as an optional alternate branch.
- Track Super Saiyan, Super Saiyan 2 and Super Saiyan 3 in Z; God, Blue, Blue Kaioken and Ultra Instinct in Super; and Super Saiyan 4 in GT.
Following that sequence gives you the complete character setup before the power escalations, avoids duplicate retellings, and keeps the two continuity branches clear.
