You usually can’t watch Austrian TV everywhere. ORF ON and ServusTV are not universal “watch anywhere” services. Whether a given program, livestream or sports event plays in your country depends on the specific title, the stream you choose and where you are physically located when you press play. Owning an account, installing an app or using a compatible device does not change the licensing behind the content.
Quick answer by service and stream
The table below summarizes what each provider says about access. The restrictions are the providers’ own statements, and the duration figures are maximum windows rather than guarantees for any single title.

| Service or stream | Location limit stated by the provider | Live or catch-up | Duration stated by the provider |
|---|---|---|---|
| ORF Live (live channels) | Some streams are restricted to Austria for legal reasons. The ORF Live notice for a referenced stream says it may be played only in Austria and without a VPN. | Live, plus delayed viewing | Up to 24 hours of time-shift viewing (ORF service overview, 2024) |
| ORF ON, current information | Geoprotected videos require an Austrian IP address. Titles carry a location icon when they are Austria-only. | Catch-up / on demand | Up to 30 days (ORF, 2024; a maximum, depends on rights) |
| ORF ON, films and series | Same as above, title by title. | Catch-up / on demand | Up to six months (ORF, 2024; a maximum, depends on rights) |
| ORF ON, documentaries | Same as above, title by title. | Catch-up / on demand | Potentially no expiry date, according to ORF’s help pages; depends on rights |
| ServusTV Austria livestream | Intended for users in Austria, for legal reasons tied to territorial rights. | Live | Not applicable |
| ServusTV Germany livestream | Intended for users in Germany. | Live | Not applicable |
| ServusTV replays | Available only where replay rights permit; a title may be unavailable in your country. | Catch-up | At least seven days, per ServusTV’s FAQ (the FAQ shows a day and month but no year) |
| Sports events on ServusTV | Rights vary by event. Some are licensed for Austria, Germany and Switzerland together; others are narrower. | Live | Depends on the event |
Why the same service behaves differently in different countries
Austrian broadcasters license programs from producers, co-producers and rights holders, and those contracts often specify where and how a program may be streamed. The provider then applies technical controls to enforce those limits. Two things are easy to confuse:
- The service or app being available to you. An account, a supported device or a free app can be accessible from abroad even when a particular program is not.
- The program being licensed in your country. This is a title-by-title question, and the providers say it is decided by rights, not by the app or device you use.
ORF states that territorial restrictions apply where licensing requires them, for example for certain sports broadcasts, or where ORF has acquired streaming rights only for Austria. Its ORF ON catalog reflects this: ORF says it can offer its own and co-produced works with online rights, but it cannot offer acquired programs in ORF ON.

ORF ON and ORF Live abroad
The ORF Live notice
The ORF Live page for one referenced stream displays this notice:
“Dieses Video darf aus rechtlichen Gründen nur in Österreich und ohne VPN (verschlüsseltes Datentransfer-Netz) wiedergegeben werden.” In English: “For legal reasons, this video may only be played in Austria and without a VPN (encrypted data-transfer network).”
This notice applies to that specific live stream. It is not a blanket statement about every ORF video, but it shows that some live channels are restricted at the stream level and that ORF explicitly bars VPN playback for them.

How ORF describes geoprotection
ORF’s help page “Was bedeutet der Hinweis ‘nur in Österreich abrufbar’?” (dated 24 July 2024) says: “Videos mit Geoprotection können nur mit österreichischer IP-Adresse abgerufen werden.” In English: “Videos with geoprotection can only be accessed with an Austrian IP address.” The practical implication is that a geoprotected title will not play from an IP address outside Austria, regardless of your subscription or account status.
ORF ON availability windows
ORF’s help pages give these maximum availability periods for ORF ON content:
- Current information: up to 30 days.
- Films and series: up to six months.
- Documentaries: potentially without an expiry date.
These are legal ceilings. ORF notes that the actual duration also depends on online rights and licenses, so a title may leave the service earlier. Check the availability information shown on the individual video page.

ServusTV and ServusTV On abroad
Austria and Germany are separate streams
In English: “For legal reasons, the ServusTV Austria livestream is limited to a territory and is thus available to users in Austria. Conversely, the ServusTV Germany stream is only available to users in Germany.”
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteA common question is why the Austrian livestream does not play in Germany, and the FAQ answers it directly: the Austrian stream is licensed for Austria, and the German stream is licensed for Germany. Choosing a different stream does not get around the territory of the stream you select.
Sports rights are decided event by event
ServusTV says that sports rights are territorial. Some events may be available across Austria, Germany and Switzerland, while content outside the licensed territory is unavailable. Because rights are negotiated per event, the same channel can carry a match you can watch in one country and not in another. Before planning around a specific event, check whether the event page or stream lists your country.

Replays and missing titles
According to ServusTV, a previously broadcast program stays in its media library for at least seven days where replay rights permit. Some titles, especially films, may have no replay button at all. A title can also be absent in your country even though it appears elsewhere in the service, so look for the individual title rather than assuming the whole catalog travels with you.
Apps and devices
ServusTV On is offered as a free app across phones, tablets, notebooks, consoles and smart TVs. The official compatibility page lists Amazon Fire TV among supported platforms. Compatibility requirements can change, so confirm them on the provider’s page before buying hardware. Device support decides whether the app runs; it does not decide whether a program is licensed where you are.

ServusTV’s FAQ states that it does not support VPN services and warns that they can cause black screens, pixelation or app crashes. The ORF Live notice quoted above also bars VPN playback for that stream. Neither provider offers a VPN as a supported method of access, so treat VPN use as something that can fail or breach the provider’s terms rather than a dependable workaround.
How to check whether a program will play where you are
- Decide which product you need: ORF ON on demand, ORF Live, ServusTV Austria, ServusTV Germany, or one specific sports event.
- Open the title or event in the provider’s official app or website from the country where you will be watching.
- For ORF, read the title details and look for the location icon, which marks Austria-only content. Note the availability period displayed for that video.
- For ServusTV, pick the stream that matches your country, then check the event page for the territories covered by its rights.
- If the title shows a location or unavailable-in-country message, the provider’s rights rules are the reason; a different device or account will not change that.
- Do not rely on a VPN to bypass a restriction, since both providers say VPN use is not supported.
What is and is not established
- The providers’ official pages describe rules and maximum windows. They do not publish a destination-by-destination catalog, so no complete country-by-country list of available titles exists to check against.
- The ORF duration figures come from ORF pages dated 2024; the ServusTV seven-day replay statement appears on a page without a year. Treat both as the provider’s current stated rules, and verify the figure on the title you are watching.
- Availability can change as rights are renewed or expire, so a title that plays today may not play later, and the reverse is also true.
Use the provider’s own title page as the final test. A program that shows as available from your location is available there, and one that shows a restriction is not.
