You can watch Apple TV+ movies and shows without buying an Apple TV box. Open the Apple TV app on a compatible smart TV or streaming device, or visit tv.apple.com in a supported browser such as Chrome or Firefox. Sign in with the Apple Account that holds your subscription. Exact app availability, features, content and offers depend on your device, software version and country or region.
The three ways to watch Apple TV+
Apple TV+ viewing generally follows one of three routes:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- Apple TV app on a smart TV: Many compatible televisions include the app or let you install it from their app store.
- Apple TV app on a streaming device: Supported Roku, Fire TV, Android TV, Google TV and other devices can provide app-based viewing when the model and software are compatible.
- Web browser: A computer can play Apple TV content at tv.apple.com; Apple specifically names Chrome and Firefox as examples.
Apple TV 4K is optional hardware, not a requirement. If your television already supports the Apple TV app, or you are happy watching on a computer, there is no need to purchase a separate Apple streaming box.

What you need before you start
- A reliable internet connection for the television, streaming device or computer.
- An Apple Account with an active Apple TV subscription for subscription-only movies and shows.
- A compatible device and current enough software to offer the Apple TV app, or a supported web browser.
- Your Apple Account password, and access to any two-factor authentication method associated with the account.
The Apple TV app can also display rentals, purchases and separately subscribed channels. An Apple TV subscription does not automatically include third-party branded subscription services or titles that are offered separately for rent or purchase. What appears in the app and which features work can vary by country or region and by device.
Set up Apple TV+ on a smart TV or streaming device
1. Connect the equipment to the internet
Finish the television or streaming device’s network setup first. Wired Ethernet can be useful for a fixed streaming device, while Wi-Fi is normally sufficient if the signal is strong where the equipment is installed. If other apps cannot reach the internet, solve that connection problem before troubleshooting Apple TV.
2. Find the Apple TV app
- Open the TV’s home screen or apps area.
- Look for an app named Apple TV. It may be preinstalled but hidden in an apps list rather than displayed on the first row.
- If it is missing, open the device’s app store, search for Apple TV, and install it if the store offers a compatible version for that exact model.
Apple’s setup documentation includes examples for Samsung, LG, Sony, Panasonic and VIZIO televisions, plus Roku, Fire TV, Android TV and Google TV devices. Menus, app-store names and remote-control buttons differ by manufacturer. If the app does not appear in the store, do not assume that downloading an unofficial package will make the device compatible; check Apple’s current compatibility information for the model and region instead.
3. Open the app and sign in
- Launch Apple TV.
- Choose the sign-in option.
- Enter the Apple Account credentials associated with the subscription, or follow the on-screen sign-in method if the device presents one.
- Complete any verification code request sent to a trusted Apple device or phone number.
Using a different Apple Account is the most common reason a paid subscription appears to be missing. The account on the television must be the account that subscribed or made the relevant purchase. If another member of a household pays for the subscription, sign in with that account or use the sharing arrangement supported by the subscription and device.
4. Handle subscriptions and purchases on another device when necessary
Some television apps let you browse and play content but do not support starting subscriptions or making purchases inside the app. In that case, complete the subscription or purchase on another supported Apple device or at tv.apple.com, then return to the television and sign in with the same Apple Account. Apple specifically notes that Android TV and Google TV can provide access to previously purchased, rented or subscribed content even when in-app transactions are not supported.
5. Play a title
After sign-in, open the Apple TV section that contains the subscription title, select a movie or episode and choose the play control. A title marked as a rental, purchase or separate channel may require a different transaction even though it appears alongside Apple TV+ programming.
How compatibility varies by television and device
“Supported smart TV” is not a blanket statement about every product sold by a manufacturer. The operating system, model year, firmware and sales region can change whether the Apple TV app is offered and which capabilities it has. Apple also warns that not all features and content are available on all devices or in all regions.

Check these points for the exact equipment you own:
- App listing: Can the device’s official app store find and install Apple TV?
- Software version: Is the television or streaming device updated to the version required by the app?
- Playback capability: Does the device support the picture and sound formats you expect, or will it use a lower-quality stream?
- Account functions: Can the app subscribe and purchase, or is it playback-only?
- Regional availability: Is Apple TV offered in your country or region, and does the local catalog contain the program you want?
If the app is absent after an update and a search of the official store, the practical next step is to consult Apple’s current device guidance and the television maker’s support page for that model. Avoid treating a successful installation on one model as proof that another model will work.
Watch Apple TV+ in a web browser
A browser is the fastest option when you have a computer but no compatible TV app. Apple states: “You can watch Apple TV in any web browser, such as Chrome or Firefox.” Use the service at tv.apple.com.
Browser setup
- Open Chrome, Firefox or another browser that can load the Apple TV website.
- Go to tv.apple.com.
- Select the sign-in control.
- Enter the Apple Account used for the Apple TV subscription.
- Complete any account-verification request, then choose a movie or show and start playback.
An existing subscriber can sign in and watch. Apple’s browser instructions also refer to starting a free trial where available. The site may ask you to add or verify a credit card to confirm that you are the account holder before web viewing is enabled.
If browser playback or autoplay fails
- Update the browser and reload the page.
- Temporarily disable ad-blocking extensions or apps; Apple suggests trying this when autoplay does not work.
- Check that the browser allows the site to use cookies and protected media.
- Sign out and back in with the account that actually holds the subscription.
- Try a second supported browser to separate an account problem from a browser-specific problem.
Browser viewing is convenient on a laptop or desktop, but it may be less comfortable than a television app for a living-room setup. You can connect the computer to a television with a suitable display cable if your computer and TV support that connection; the Apple TV website remains the playback source.
Do you need an Apple TV 4K box?
No. Apple TV 4K is an optional dedicated streaming device. Apple presents it as one route to watching Apple TV and as an option for viewers who want Apple’s hardware and a 4K-capable living-room experience. A compatible smart-TV app, supported streaming device or browser can work without it.
A dedicated box may make sense when your television has no compatible Apple TV app, its built-in software is too old to receive the app, or you want a separate device that can move between televisions. It is not a prerequisite created by the subscription. Check the capabilities of your existing equipment before buying hardware.

Subscription scope, trials and regional limits
An Apple TV subscription is required for Apple TV subscription content. The app itself is broader than the subscription: it can also show titles available to rent or buy and channels that require separate subscriptions. Read the purchase or subscription label on an individual title rather than assuming that every item in the app is included.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Features, catalogs, supported devices and playback options differ by country or region. A program available in one market may not be available in another, and a device feature offered in one region may be absent elsewhere.
Apple’s U.S. service page currently advertises a seven-day free trial. That is a U.S.-specific offer shown on Apple’s service page, not a guaranteed entitlement for every account or country. Eligibility, renewal terms and the current offer should be checked on the sign-up screen for your region before you confirm a trial. No single global price or universal trial term should be assumed.
| Viewing route | What you need | Can you transact there? | Best fit | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Smart TV Apple TV app | Compatible TV, internet connection and Apple Account | Depends on the model and app; some are playback-only | Watching directly on a television | Compatibility and features vary by model, software and region |
| Streaming-device Apple TV app | Compatible streaming device, TV input, internet and Apple Account | Depends on the platform; some purchases must happen elsewhere | Televisions without a suitable built-in app | Not every device generation supports the app or every feature |
| Web browser | Computer, supported browser, internet and Apple Account | Sign-up or verification may be requested on the website | Quick access without installing a TV app | Ad-blocking extensions can interfere with autoplay |
| Apple TV 4K | Apple’s dedicated box, compatible display, internet and Apple Account | Features follow the device and account setup | Viewers who specifically want dedicated Apple hardware | Optional; unnecessary when another compatible route already works |
Fix the most common setup problems
The Apple TV app cannot be found
- Search the official app store using the exact name Apple TV.
- Install pending television or streaming-device software updates.
- Restart the device and search again.
- Confirm the exact model and country or region against Apple’s compatibility guidance.
- If the app still is not offered, use a browser or another supported device rather than installing an unofficial app.
An absent app is usually a compatibility or regional-availability issue, not a sign that the subscription is inactive.
The app opens but says there is no subscription
- Open the account section and verify the signed-in Apple Account.
- Sign out, restart the device and sign in again with the account that paid for Apple TV.
- Check whether the title is actually a rental, purchase or separately subscribed channel.
- If the subscription was just started on another device, wait for the transaction to finish and then refresh the app.
You cannot subscribe on the television
That can be normal. Complete the transaction on another supported device or through the Apple TV website, then use the same Apple Account on the television. A lack of an in-app purchase button does not necessarily prevent playback of an existing subscription.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsVideo will not start in the browser
- Confirm that the browser is connected to the internet and updated.
- Disable ad-blocking extensions temporarily, as Apple recommends when autoplay is troublesome.
- Allow cookies and protected-content playback for the Apple TV site.
- Try Chrome or Firefox if another browser fails.
- Sign in again and verify any credit-card or account-holder prompt.
The picture quality is lower than expected
Streaming quality depends on the device, display, connection and title. Confirm that the television or streaming device supports the resolution and formats you expect, and that the device is connected to the correct display input. The Apple TV app may offer different capabilities from the browser or from another platform.
A show or movie is missing
First check the title’s availability label and your country or region. Apple’s catalog and included features are not identical everywhere, and content available for a separate rental or purchase is not automatically part of the Apple TV subscription.

Choosing the right route for your situation
You already own a recent smart TV
Search for and open the Apple TV app first. This avoids buying extra hardware and gives you a remote-controlled television experience. If the app is not available for your exact model, move to a compatible streaming device or use a computer connected to the TV.
Your TV has no Apple TV app
A supported streaming device is usually the simplest living-room workaround. Confirm app availability for the particular device generation before purchase. Apple TV 4K is one optional route, but it is not the only way to put Apple TV on a television.
You need to watch immediately on a computer
Use tv.apple.com. The browser route avoids installation and works with an existing subscription after you sign in. Keep ad-blocking and account-verification issues in mind if playback does not begin.
You are deciding whether to start a subscription
Check the current offer and eligibility in your own country, then confirm which Apple Account will own the subscription. Starting the subscription on one device and watching on another is supported as long as both use the same account and the destination device supports the content.
Keep your account and household setup tidy
Use one clearly identified Apple Account for the subscription across the devices on which you watch. Record which account completed the sign-up, especially in a household where several people have accounts. When giving away a television or streaming device, sign out of Apple TV and remove the device from any account-management screen available on the platform. This prevents the next user from accessing viewing history or account-linked content.
If you share access with family members, use Apple’s supported account-sharing features rather than handing out your password. Availability and controls can differ by region and subscription arrangement, so review the options shown in your account settings.
Where to get the current instructions
Apple’s guide for smart TVs and streaming devices covers app installation, sign-in and platform limitations. Its browser guide covers web sign-in, account verification, trials where offered and autoplay troubleshooting. The broader Apple TV viewing guide describes supported viewing categories, including Apple TV 4K. For U.S. service details and the currently displayed trial offer, see Apple’s U.S. Apple TV page. Check these live pages when your device, software or local offer has changed because Apple’s instructions and availability can be updated.
