To watch a live sports stream on your TV, first find which service carries the specific game in your location. Then check that service’s subscription requirements and support for your TV or streaming device, and watch through its official TV app or another route the service permits. A game listing on a TV platform does not necessarily mean that platform carries the stream.
1. Find the service carrying the exact game
Start with the league or event’s official watch page or schedule, then confirm that the named service carries the particular game—not just the sport or league in general. Rights can vary by event and location. Google TV’s sports interface can help identify where to watch, but some games shown there are not available to stream through Google TV itself: Google TV: Find sports events.

2. Choose a way to get the stream onto your TV
Use the TV’s app
Search the television’s app store for the official app from the league, broadcaster, or live-TV service. Before relying on it, check the provider’s supported-device page for your TV model or operating-system version. Compatibility differs between services; for example, ESPN and NFL publish separate device lists: ESPN TV-connected devices and NFL-supported devices.
Add a streaming player if the TV lacks the app
A streaming player connected to the TV’s HDMI port can provide an app platform even if the television’s own app store does not have the service you need. Roku says its streaming players can connect to any TV with an HDMI connection: Roku: Connect your Roku streaming player. The player does not provide game rights or a subscription, and it does not guarantee that a particular sports app or event is available. Check the service’s device list and the game’s availability before buying hardware.

Cast from a phone or tablet only if that game allows it
Do not assume that a casting icon or general casting support means you can send every live game to the TV. NFL+ says some content can be cast, but its live local and primetime regular-season and postseason games are restricted to phones or tablets and cannot be cast to a TV: NFL+: Casting content to a TV. NBA also notes that Chromecast playback can depend on the device’s operating system, version, and model: NBA: Chromecast help. Check the rules for the specific event and the devices involved.
Use a live-TV service if it carries the game
A live-TV subscription may provide a game shown on a broadcast or sports channel, but check that the service carries the channel in your area and that the event is not restricted by a regional blackout. Hulu + Live TV says channel availability varies by location and programming can be subject to regional restrictions and blackouts: Hulu + Live TV channel lineup.

- Internet connection: Use a reliable broadband connection and follow the service’s troubleshooting guidance. Hulu says high-speed broadband is required and that HD viewing or multiple concurrent streams may require more bandwidth (Hulu internet connection help).
- HDMI and picture format: For a separate HDMI cable, Roku recommends High Speed HDMI for 720p or 1080p and Premium High Speed HDMI for 4K/HDR. A compatible TV and streaming player are also needed to benefit from 4K/HDR; Roku Streaming Sticks plug directly into HDMI (Roku connection help).
4. Pick between routes by what will actually work
If more than one option appears possible, compare these factors before subscribing or purchasing equipment:

- Does the service carry this exact game?
- Is it available in your country or market, and do blackout rules apply?
- Does the app work on your TV or connected streaming device?
- Does your current subscription include the event, or is a channel or add-on required?
- Does the service allow this live event to be cast?
- Will you need an HDMI-connected player, cable, or available HDMI port?
