That is phone-screen 360 viewing, not necessarily immersive headset VR: YouTube says its Cardboard mode is not supported on iPhone or iPad, so a phone viewer is not a reliable way to get YouTube headset playback on the XR.
Watch a YouTube 360 video on the iPhone XR
- Open the YouTube app and find a video identified as 360-degree content.
- Start playback in the app, then rotate the iPhone to look around if the video player responds to motion. You can also use on-screen controls if they are available.
- If the video was opened in Safari or another mobile browser and does not behave as a 360 player, open it in the YouTube app instead. YouTube says VR180 and 360-degree playback is not supported in mobile browsers, including web views outside YouTube: YouTube Help: Watch 360-degree and VR videos.
Phone-screen 360 viewing is different from headset VR
Turning the phone to change the view lets you explore a 360-degree scene on the screen. Headset viewing is a different mode: the app must render the image appropriately for a viewer, typically with separate views for the eyes. Putting the XR into a phone-based viewer does not, by itself, make ordinary 360 playback into immersive VR.

YouTube Help explicitly says, “Cardboard is not supported for iPhone and iPad.” Google’s separate Cardboard setup guide describes using an iPhone with a compatible viewer, but that general setup information does not establish that YouTube’s iOS app currently offers Cardboard playback on the XR. Check compatibility for the specific app and video before buying or relying on a viewer: Google Cardboard setup.

YouTube’s supported-device list names standalone headsets and Apple Vision Pro, but does not list iPhone XR as a supported device for the YouTube VR app: YouTube VR supported devices. Do not treat that app as an iPhone installation route.

Third-party video players
VR Tube’s App Store listing advertises 360 playback, gyro and touch controls, and headset support: VR Tube on the App Store. Those listing claims do not confirm compatibility with every iPhone XR software version or with every YouTube video. Check current App Store availability, supported formats, and the specific playback behavior before depending on it. A third-party player is best treated as a trial for content it supports, not as a guaranteed way to restore YouTube Cardboard mode.

No. Apple specifies video mirroring and video out up to 1080p for iPhone XR using separately sold Lightning adapters: Apple: iPhone XR technical specifications. That sends a display signal; it does not add 360-degree controls, stereoscopic rendering, or head tracking.
