Use the blanket’s own care label and manual as the authority. Disconnect power and remove the controller before washing, use only the approved cycle, temperature and drying method, and do not reconnect the blanket until it is completely dry. Store it in the manner its manual specifies, protected from moisture, crushing, kinks and sharp creases.
The safe answer in one sentence
A heated blanket is safe to wash only when its manufacturer permits washing and you follow that model’s exact instructions. Unplug it, detach the controller and cord as directed, keep every electrical part out of water, use only the specified detergent, cycle and temperature, and dry the blanket completely before reconnecting or using it.

There is no universal heated-blanket wash setting. One model may allow a delicate machine cycle, another may require hand washing, and another may prohibit washing altogether. Drying instructions differ too: some blankets may be air-dried only, while others permit a particular tumble-dryer setting. Treat a setting from a different product as irrelevant to yours.

Why the care label and manual come first
Electrical blankets are not ordinary bedding
Heating elements and their connecting wires are sewn into the blanket. Twisting, forceful wringing, crushing, excessive heat or a sharp fold can stress those parts even when the outer fabric looks fine. Water itself is not automatically the problem; the danger is washing or using the blanket in a way the wiring, connectors or insulation were not designed to tolerate.

Instructions vary by model
Whirlpool advises checking the care label, unplugging the blanket and detaching the controller or cord, selecting the specified cycle and temperature, and avoiding twisting or wringing during hand washing. It says to wait until the blanket is completely dry before reconnecting or using the controller.
Maytag similarly directs owners to the care tag for wash and dryer settings. Its general guidance calls for mild detergent and says to avoid bleach and fabric softener; it describes gentle or delicate washing only when the particular blanket’s instructions allow it.
Tristar’s support instructions for a heating-blanket model are more specific: remove the control unit, put the blanket in a sealed net bag, select a delicate cycle at no more than 40°C, and air-dry it. Those are Tristar’s instructions for that product, not a universal recipe.

Sunbeam’s US heated-bedding guidance includes its own care directions and warns that commercial dryers may become too hot for its heated products. That warning and its drying instructions should not be transferred to another model without checking that model’s manual.
What the differences mean in practice
| Source or product guidance | Washing direction | Temperature or cycle | Drying direction | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Whirlpool | Follow the care label; detach the controller or cord | Use the specified cycle and temperature | Reconnect only when completely dry | Hand washing must not include twisting or wringing |
| Maytag | Use the care tag; gentle or delicate washing where permitted | Not stated universally; use the model’s setting | Follow the care tag | Use mild detergent; avoid bleach and fabric softener |
| Tristar heating blanket | Remove control unit; place blanket in a sealed net bag | Delicate cycle, no more than 40°C | Air dry | These directions apply to the cited Tristar product |
| Sunbeam US heated bedding | Follow Sunbeam’s product directions | Not stated universally | Commercial dryers may be too hot for its heated products | Do not apply this warning to another model without its manual |
| Chal-Tec/Klarstein-hosted manual | Follow the product manual | Not stated in the cited storage guidance | Cool before storage | Avoid wrinkles and heavy objects on the blanket |
| WorkSafe New Zealand | Public safety guidance rather than a model wash program | Not stated | Store rolled or flat in a dry area | The guidance warns against folding, so the product manual must resolve any conflict |
Before washing: identify the blanket and inspect it
Find the permanent care label
Look for the sewn-in label, the model number on the controller or cord, and the instruction booklet. If the label is missing, illegible or contradictory, do not guess a wash cycle or dryer setting. Find the manual for the exact model through the manufacturer’s support documentation or treat the blanket as not machine-washable until its instructions are confirmed.

Pay attention to words such as “machine wash,” “hand wash,” “washable,” “do not wash,” “air dry,” or a specific dryer temperature. A blanket that has a detachable controller is not automatically safe for machine washing; detachability is only one part of the manufacturer’s instructions.
Check for damage while the blanket is still dry
Spread the blanket in good light and inspect the entire surface, the controller connection, the cord, the plug and the control switch. WorkSafe New Zealand’s checklist includes:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
- worn, frayed or exposed wires;
- kinks or sharp bends in the blanket or cord;
- scorch marks, discoloration or melted areas;
- breaks or irregularities in the heating element;
- damaged plugs, switches or connectors; and
- hot spots that feel or look different from the rest of the blanket.
A hot spot can indicate a kinked or damaged heating coil. WorkSafe New Zealand warns that such damage can create fire or electric-shock risk. Do not wash a damaged blanket in the hope that cleaning will fix it. Remove it from service pending assessment by a licensed electrical worker or replace it.
How to disconnect the electrical parts
- Turn the controller off. Use the off position specified by the manual.
- Unplug the blanket from the wall. Do not rely on the controller’s off switch as a substitute for disconnecting mains power.
- Detach the controller and cord exactly as instructed. Some designs separate at a connector on the blanket; others have a different removal procedure. Do not pull on wires or force a connector.
- Keep the controller, plug and cord dry. Do not immerse them, place them in a washer, or leave them where wash water can run into a connector.
- Confirm that only the textile blanket is going into the wash. If the controller cannot be removed, the manual must explicitly state how the product may be cleaned. Otherwise, do not wash it.
Machine-washing a blanket when the manual permits it
Use this procedure only after the exact care instructions authorize machine washing. The machine does not make a blanket safe by default; the model’s label determines the cycle, water temperature and any other limits.
- Prepare the blanket. Remove the controller and cord. If the manual specifies a sealed laundry net bag, use one of the size and type it calls for. Tristar’s cited instructions require this step for its heating blanket; it is not a universal requirement.
- Select the permitted program. Choose the precise cycle named by the manual. If it says delicate, select delicate rather than substituting a normal or heavy-duty program. If it gives a maximum temperature, do not exceed it. Tristar’s cited limit is 40°C or below for its specified delicate cycle.
- Add only an approved detergent. Maytag’s general guidance says to use mild detergent and avoid bleach and fabric softener. If your manual specifies a different product or prohibits a detergent, follow that model-specific instruction instead.
- Keep the load gentle. Do not add heavy items that could compress or stretch the blanket unless the manual expressly permits them. Avoid a cycle that creates more agitation or heat than the label allows.
- Remove it promptly when the cycle ends. Support the wet blanket with both hands rather than lifting it by a corner, connector area or cord opening.
Hand-washing without stressing the wiring
If the label permits hand washing, use the temperature, detergent and soaking limits stated by the manufacturer. A hand-wash instruction does not mean that any bucket, water temperature or cleaning chemical is acceptable.

- Fill a clean basin with water at the temperature specified by the care label.
- Add the permitted mild detergent in the amount directed. Do not add bleach or fabric softener unless the model’s instructions specifically allow them.
- Lower the blanket into the water without forcing it into a tight bundle.
- Agitate it gently as directed. Do not scrub across the areas containing the controller connector or heating elements.
- Drain and rinse using the method the manual specifies.
- Never twist, wring or tightly coil the wet blanket. Whirlpool specifically cautions against twisting or wringing during hand washing.
- Support the blanket underneath when lifting it so its wet weight does not pull on seams or wiring.
Drying: the step that prevents many failures
Use only an approved drying method
Drying instructions are model-specific. If the manual permits tumble drying, follow its exact setting and temperature. If it says to air-dry, do not substitute a dryer. Sunbeam’s US guidance cautions that commercial dryers may become too hot for its heated products, while Tristar’s cited instructions require air drying. Those examples show why a generic “low heat” rule is not reliable.
Air-dry when directed
Arrange the washed blanket according to the manual so air can reach it without creating sharp folds or pulling on a wet connector area. Do not reconnect the controller to speed drying, and do not use the blanket while any part remains damp. The controller, cord and plug must also be dry before they are reattached.
Confirm complete dryness
Check the blanket’s thick seams, connector area and any layered sections, not just the exposed surface. Dampness can remain inside folds even when the outside feels dry. WorkSafe New Zealand states: “Never use an electric blanket that is wet. Dry it thoroughly according to the manufacturer’s instructions.” Reconnect or operate the blanket only after it is thoroughly dry.

Resolve folding and rolling instructions from the manual
Storage advice is not uniform. A cited Chal-Tec/Klarstein-hosted manual says to let the blanket cool before folding, avoid wrinkles, and keep heavy objects off it because deep creases or folds can damage the wiring. WorkSafe New Zealand advises storing a blanket rolled or flat in a dry area and warns against folding. Because those directions differ, use the exact manual for your product to decide whether it should be folded, rolled or kept flat.
Prepare it for storage
- Disconnect the controller and cord before putting the blanket away.
- Allow the blanket to cool completely after use or drying.
- Make sure the textile and all electrical parts are fully dry.
- Arrange it using the manual’s permitted method, avoiding sharp creases, tight bends and kinks.
- Place it in a dry, clean area protected from leaks, condensation and damp floors.
- Keep heavy boxes, luggage and furniture from pressing on it.
- Protect the cord and controller from crushing, but do not wrap the cord so tightly that it develops permanent bends.
Do not assume the original storage bag is suitable if it compresses the blanket or traps moisture. The manual’s requirements for ventilation, rolling, folding or flat storage take priority.

Inspection before the next use
Inspect the blanket whenever you remove it from storage and when changing bedding. Look again at the cord, plug, controller, switch, connectors, seams and heating area. Search for the same warning signs checked before washing: exposed or worn wires, scorch marks, breaks, kinks, damaged connectors and hot spots.
If anything has changed, do not plug the blanket in “just to test it.” A visible break, unusual smell, scorch mark, damaged cord or localized hot spot is a reason to stop using it. WorkSafe New Zealand recommends assessment by a licensed electrical worker or replacement when a hot spot or other damage may indicate a compromised heating element.
Common mistakes and what to do instead
| Mistake | Why it is risky | Safer action |
|---|---|---|
| Using another blanket’s wash temperature | Heating elements and insulation have model-specific limits | Use the exact label or manual for your blanket |
| Putting the controller in the washer | Water can damage electrical components and create a shock hazard | Detach it as instructed and keep it dry |
| Wringing a hand-washed blanket | Twisting can stress or kink internal wiring | Lift and support it without twisting |
| Adding bleach or fabric softener | These chemicals may not be approved for the blanket’s materials | Use the specified mild detergent, if allowed |
| Using a commercial dryer by default | Some dryers can become too hot for heated bedding | Use only the dryer setting explicitly permitted by the manual, or air-dry as directed |
| Reconnecting while slightly damp | Residual moisture can create electrical risk | Wait until the entire blanket and connectors are thoroughly dry |
| Storing under heavy items | Compression and deep creases can damage the wiring | Store where nothing presses on the blanket |
| Folding despite a manual that says to roll or store flat | Sharp or repeated creases can stress heating elements | Follow the product’s stated storage method |
| Ignoring a hot spot | It can indicate a kinked or damaged coil and create fire or shock risk | Stop using the blanket and seek competent assessment or replace it |
If the blanket was washed incorrectly
If the controller or cord got wet
Do not plug it in or reconnect it. Disconnect the appliance from power if it is still connected, keep the electrical parts away from people and combustible materials, and obtain the manufacturer’s safety direction or assessment by a qualified electrical professional. Do not assume that air-drying a soaked controller restores its safety.
If the blanket was wrung, tightly folded or overheated
Let it cool and dry fully, then inspect it carefully for kinks, scorch marks, breaks, exposed wires or hot spots. Do not use it if any sign of damage appears. A visual inspection cannot prove that an invisible conductor is sound, so unusual heating or physical damage warrants professional assessment or replacement.
If it smells burnt or develops a hot spot during use
Turn it off, unplug it and stop using it. Do not wash it again, open the controller or attempt a home repair. A hot spot or burning smell can signal damage to the heating element or insulation; follow WorkSafe New Zealand’s advice to seek a licensed electrical worker or replace the blanket.
What to check when choosing a replacement
If the blanket is damaged and must be replaced, compare care instructions before buying rather than assuming all heated bedding is alike. The useful questions are:
- Is machine washing allowed, or is hand washing required?
- What exact cycle and maximum temperature are specified?
- Is tumble drying allowed, and at what setting?
- How must the controller and cord be detached and kept dry?
- Does the manual require a sealed net bag or another protective step?
- Should the blanket be rolled, folded or stored flat?
- What does the manufacturer say about inspection, connectors and storage?
These criteria reflect the differences in the Whirlpool, Maytag, Tristar, Sunbeam, product-manual and WorkSafe guidance. They are more useful than treating a blanket as washable merely because its outer fabric resembles ordinary bedding.
