If it permits washing, use the gentlest method listed, turn the cardigan inside out, avoid rubbing and wringing, press out water instead of twisting it, and dry it flat in the shade. Once completely dry, fold it for storage in a clean, dry place. Pilling is caused by friction and can be reduced and removed, but it cannot be guaranteed away.
Read the sewn-in care label before doing anything
Cardigans differ in fiber blends, yarn structure, dyes and construction. A wool blend, cotton knit and synthetic cardigan may look similar but respond very differently to water, agitation and heat. Start with the sewn-in label and follow its care claim rather than copying a method that worked for another garment. Woolmark’s guidance is explicitly intended for wool garments whose labels permit the stated treatment; its explanations of care symbols are available in Woolmark’s wool-care guidance and washing-symbol guide.

If the label gives a method that differs from the general wool procedure below, the label wins. Detergents, laundry bags and drying screens are aids; none of them changes a garment’s permitted treatment.

Choose between machine washing and hand washing
There are only two home-wash routes when the label allows them: machine washing and hand washing. The better choice depends first on the label, then on how much agitation you can control. A machine’s wool or delicates program provides repeatable settings, while hand washing gives you direct control but makes rough handling—especially wringing—more tempting.

Machine-washing a label-approved wool cardigan
- Turn it inside out or use a laundry bag. This limits surface rubbing against the drum and other items. Keep the load compatible with the care label rather than mixing the cardigan with rough, heavy items.
- Add a neutral, mild wool detergent. Woolmark identifies a mild wool detergent as suitable for washable wool. Use the product according to its own directions; a detergent cannot make a dry-clean-only cardigan machine washable.
- Select the wool cycle. If your machine does not offer one, Woolmark’s alternative is cold water or a delicates cycle. Do not replace those settings with a hotter or more vigorous program.
- Remove the cardigan promptly when the cycle ends. Wet knitwear is vulnerable to stretching while it sits or is carried by one shoulder. Support it with both hands and move directly to the pressing and reshaping stage.
Do not add bleach to wool. Woolmark also cautions that excessive fabric softener can contribute to later pilling, so softener is not a shortcut to a smoother result: see Woolmark’s detergent guidance.
Hand-washing a cardigan
- Fill a clean basin with lukewarm water. Avoid extremes of temperature and use a mild wool detergent if the label permits washing.
- Lower the cardigan into the water and soak for 10 minutes. Let the water and detergent do the work instead of scrubbing the fabric.
- Move it gently through the water. Do not rub one panel against another, pull at the cuffs or drag the garment by a single edge. Woolmark’s hand-wash instructions emphasize careful handling.
- Rinse thoroughly. Replace the water as needed until detergent is removed. Lift the cardigan with broad support rather than allowing its waterlogged length to hang from your hands.
- Press out excess water. Place the cardigan on a clean towel and press or towel-roll it to draw out moisture. The American Cleaning Institute recommends towel-rolling and pressing rather than wringing; Woolmark likewise says to press out excess water before reshaping.
Never wring or twist wet wool. Pulling and rough handling can stretch knit loops and increase surface friction, leaving the cardigan longer, wider or visibly uneven.

Dry the cardigan flat so its weight cannot stretch it
Drying is where many otherwise careful washes go wrong. A wet cardigan is substantially heavier than a dry one, so gravity can lengthen the body and distort the shoulders if it is placed on a hanger, over a narrow rail or on a single clothesline. - Transfer it while supported. After pressing out water, carry the cardigan on a towel or with both hands under its broadest areas. Do not lift it by the collar or one sleeve.
- Lay it flat. A pale, lint-free towel works as a drying surface. A mesh sweater-drying screen is an optional alternative that allows air to circulate underneath. Spread the body and sleeves without stretching them beyond their natural dimensions.
- Reshape the edges. Align the button band, shoulder seams, cuffs and hem with their original proportions while the knit is damp. Smooth rather than tug; the aim is to restore shape, not pull the garment larger.
- Dry in the shade. Choose a well-ventilated place away from direct sunlight and direct heat. Turn or reposition the cardigan only when necessary and continue supporting it so one area does not bear the wet weight.
- Wait until it is completely dry. Do not fold or store a cardigan that still feels cool, damp or clammy. Residual moisture can create odor and makes the knit easier to deform.
A radiator, heated surface, hair dryer or strong direct sun can add heat unevenly and may damage or distort fibers. Follow the garment label if it expressly permits a different drying method, but do not assume that a “low” heat setting is acceptable merely because the cardigan survived washing.

Fold and store the cardigan without inviting moths or moisture
Storage begins before the cardigan goes into a drawer. The American Cleaning Institute advises cleaning wool before long-term storage because food residue and body oils can attract moths. It also states plainly: Sweaters should be folded for storage.

Prepare it for storage
- Make sure the cardigan is fully dry after washing.
- Put it away clean; do not store it after wearing if it has picked up food, perspiration or body oils.
- Fold the cardigan rather than hanging it. A hanger concentrates the garment’s weight at the shoulders and can stretch the knit out of shape over time.
- Keep the folded garment away from damp conditions, leaks and condensation.
Choose a container for your environment
Authoritative guidance differs on whether an airtight container is preferable, because the surrounding humidity and the container’s condition matter. Woolmark recommends airtight bags or containers for long-term wool storage; the American Cleaning Institute recommends a cool, dark, dry, ventilated area and warns that plastic bags or bins can trap moisture. Neither recommendation should be treated as universal.

If you use a wool-safe moth repellent, keep it in the storage area according to its instructions and do not place it directly on the cardigan; Woolmark specifically advises against direct contact between moth products and the garment.

Understand what pilling is—and what you can realistically prevent
Pills are small fiber bundles formed when repeated friction loosens fibers and twists them together on the surface. Rubbing during wear, laundering and handling can all contribute. The Woolmark Company explains that pilling is complex and says, Because pilling is so complex, nobody can guarantee that it won’t occur.

That means a cardigan can be cared for correctly and still develop some pills. The goal is to reduce unnecessary abrasion, not to promise a pill-free garment.
Reduce new pilling
- Turn the cardigan inside out before a permitted wash so the outer surface receives less direct rubbing.
- Use the gentlest label-approved cycle or hand method; avoid scrubbing and rough movement.
- Do not use fabric softener on wool as a routine fix. Woolmark warns that excessive softener can contribute to later pilling.
- Reduce repeated rubbing during wear and handling. Friction from other fabrics, straps, surfaces and frequent contact can create pills even without a wash.
- Keep the cardigan folded in storage rather than compressed beneath rough objects or hung where it repeatedly rubs against other garments.
Remove pills that have already formed
- Lay the dry cardigan flat. Work on a stable surface so the fabric does not move under the tool.
- Start with your fingers. Lift only loose, obvious pills and remove them gently. Do not pull hard on fibers that are still anchored in the knit.
- Use a sweater comb if needed. Move it lightly over the surface in short passes, following the tool’s instructions. Stop if it catches loops or changes the texture.
- Use a fabric shaver cautiously. Keep the fabric flat and use minimal pressure. A shaver removes surface pills; it does not prevent new friction or repair stretched knitting.
- Inspect before wearing or washing again. If the surface looks pulled, fuzzy or uneven, stop rather than making repeated passes that could remove sound fibers.
Do not treat a comb or shaver as a substitute for label care. These tools are optional maintenance for existing pills, not permission to wash, heat or handle the cardigan more aggressively.
Troubleshoot common cardigan-care problems

A safe decision sequence for every wash
For a cardigan you want to keep in shape, use this order of decisions:
- Read the label. Classify the garment as machine washable, hand washable, dry-clean only or unclear.
- Choose the label-approved route. For machine-washable wool, select the wool cycle; if unavailable, use cold water or a delicates cycle. For hand washing, use lukewarm water and a 10-minute soak.
- Minimize abrasion. Turn the cardigan inside out, use a laundry bag for a permitted machine wash, and avoid rubbing, pulling and wringing.
- Remove water by pressing. Towel-roll or press rather than twisting the wet knit.
- Reshape and dry flat in shade. Keep it off hangers, radiators and direct heat while wet.
- Store only when clean and dry. Fold it, then select a sealed or ventilated setup according to the moisture conditions in your storage space.
- Deal with pills gently. Reduce friction going forward and remove existing pills by hand, comb or careful fabric-shaver use.
This approach protects the cardigan’s shape without pretending that every fiber behaves identically. The label determines the wash method; gentle handling and flat drying prevent avoidable stretching; clean, dry folded storage protects the finished garment; and restrained maintenance keeps inevitable pilling manageable.
