Read the label, prepare every closure, use a compatible mild detergent, avoid softener residue, and choose only the drying method the label permits. Line drying is a cautious general option when allowed, but it is not a substitute for the maker’s instructions.

Why the care label comes first
Stretch workwear is not one standardized fabric category. A pair of trousers may combine cotton and elastane; a shirt may use nylon and spandex for quick drying; another item may include a treatment or construction intended to provide flame resistance. Each combination can have different limits for water temperature, agitation, bleach and heat.

Carhartt’s care guide states, “Please refer to your care label on the inside of the garment,” and its examples vary by garment category. Carhartt WIP makes the same point: “Every item of clothing includes a label detailing the particular instructions for care.” Read the label before the first wash and again if the label is hard to interpret after repeated wear.

Use the label to record four decisions:
- Water temperature: note whether the label calls for cold, warm or another temperature.
- Cycle and washing method: identify machine, hand-wash or any cycle restriction shown by the symbols or text.
- Additives: check bleach warnings and any special detergent instruction.
- Drying: confirm whether line drying, tumble drying, low heat, medium heat or another method is permitted.
Do not copy a setting from a different pair of stretch trousers simply because both garments look similar. Carhartt’s published examples include cold washing with medium tumble drying for some categories and warm washing with medium tumble drying for others. Those examples illustrate why the individual label, not a universal “stretch fabric” rule, controls.

A safe pre-wash routine
1. Read and preserve the label information
Before putting the garment in a hamper, check that the care label is present and legible. If the label has faded, photograph it while it can still be read and keep the image with your laundry notes. If two labels conflict, use the more restrictive instruction or ask the manufacturer rather than guessing.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2. Empty and inspect the garment
Remove objects from every pocket. Turn out pocket linings and brush away loose grit, metal filings or sawdust. Close hook-and-loop tabs if the label does not prohibit doing so, and inspect seams, belt loops and knee panels for damage. Washing a torn seam can enlarge the tear; laundering cannot repair an already weakened area.
3. Close zippers completely
Fully close zippers before machine washing or drying. Carhartt warns that an incompletely closed zipper can catch on other items and damage the zipper or fabric. Long or slim zipper pull-tabs can snag neighboring garments; Carhartt suggests placing such items in a laundry net. A mesh bag also keeps a zipper from repeatedly striking lighter fabrics, but it does not override the care label or make a prohibited machine cycle safe.
4. Separate by color, surface and instruction
Sort garments by color and by the most restrictive care instruction in the load. Keep dark stretch trousers away from lint-producing towels, and separate garments with exposed hardware from fine knits or mesh. Do not mix protective clothing with ordinary household laundry if the protective garment’s label specifies a dedicated process.

5. Decide whether the item needs a full wash
If the label permits it and the garment is only lightly worn, airing it out and spot-cleaning a small mark can reduce unnecessary laundering. Do not soak, scrub or apply a stain product that the label rules out. For oil, paint, chemical residue or unknown workplace contamination, use the employer’s or manufacturer’s safety procedure instead of improvising at home.

Detergent and additive choices
Use mild detergent when the label allows
Patagonia’s product-care guidance recommends mild detergent for nylon/spandex and other fiber blends. Its general advice is to wash gear in cold or warm water with mild laundry soap, preferably a non-toxic, biodegradable type. Treat that as fabric-care guidance, not permission to ignore a garment label that requires another product or process.
Measure detergent according to the product directions and the load size. Excess detergent can leave deposits that are difficult to rinse from dense workwear. If the garment label calls for a specific detergent, follow it even when a general mild detergent would otherwise be suitable.
Skip fabric softener and dryer sheets for performance stretch fabrics
Patagonia advises against fabric conditioners and dryer sheets for nylon/spandex and similar blends. Residue can reduce spandex longevity and interfere with moisture-wicking or quick-dry performance. A garment may feel softer immediately after treatment while performing worse during physical work, so softness is not a reliable test that the additive is harmless.
Do not substitute scent boosters, conditioning beads or other deposited fragrances for softener; they can create the same residue concern. If a label expressly permits or requires a finishing product, that label-specific instruction takes precedence.
Bleach requires a label decision
Check the bleach symbol or written instruction before using any whitening product. Stretch fibers, dyes, coatings and protective finishes can react differently, and a product that is acceptable for one cotton item may damage another blend. If the label does not clearly permit bleach, omit it and choose a label-approved cleaning method.

Set the washer without overstressing the fabric
Choose the label-approved temperature
Select the exact temperature category printed on the label. Cold is not automatically correct for every stretch garment, and warm is not automatically harmful; manufacturers choose a range for the particular fibers, dye and finish. Carhartt’s care examples demonstrate both cold and warm washing across different categories.
Use the gentlest permitted cycle
When a label offers more than one machine option, choose the gentler cycle for garments with high stretch, lightweight panels or exposed elastic. Avoid adding extra agitation or a longer wash simply because the garment is heavily soiled; pre-treat only in a manner compatible with the label. A full load can rub garments together, while an overloaded drum may prevent adequate rinsing, so leave the machine enough space for the items to move.
Keep closures and hardware from causing abrasion
Zip garments before loading them and fasten other closures in the manner recommended by the label. Place long pull-tabs in a laundry net when they could catch. Turn printed or coated sections inside out only if doing so does not conceal a contaminated surface that needs proper cleaning.

Flame-resistant garments are a special case. Carhartt provides separate laundering directions for its flame-resistant products, and ordinary stretch-workwear advice must not be generalized to protective clothing. Follow the protective garment’s own label and any workplace policy for detergent, bleach, softener, drying and contamination. If the garment has been exposed to a hazardous substance, stop and obtain the required handling instructions rather than putting it into a household machine.
Drying: protect elasticity and fit
Line dry when the label permits
Patagonia generally recommends line drying. For stretch workwear, line drying avoids unnecessary drum heat and makes it easier to stop the process when the garment is dry. Use a clean, well-ventilated place and support the garment so its weight does not pull a wet waistband, shoulder seam or pocket opening out of shape.
Do not assume that “line dry” means the garment can be left in any sun or weather. Follow any additional label warning about direct sunlight, shade or hanging. Keep the item away from dirty surfaces and from heat sources such as radiators unless the label specifically allows that method.

Use a dryer only at the permitted heat
If the label permits tumble drying, select the stated heat level and cycle. Carhartt’s examples include medium tumble drying for certain categories, but that is not a universal setting for every stretch garment. Patagonia’s guidance for nylon/spandex and blends allows line drying or low-heat tumble drying, subject to the garment’s own label.
Remove the garment promptly when the cycle ends. Leaving stretch clothing in a hot, stationary drum can set wrinkles and expose elastic fibers to heat longer than necessary. Do not add a dryer sheet to compensate for static if the fabric-care guidance warns that residue can shorten spandex life or impair wicking.
Never replace a prohibited method with a “short” version
A brief tumble or a lower time does not make a label-prohibited method compliant. If the label says not to tumble dry, line dry or use the specified alternative. If the label is unreadable and the manufacturer cannot clarify it, choose the least aggressive clearly available method and avoid heat until you have reliable instructions.
Comparing real care instructions without creating a false universal rule
The table below shows how instructions can differ. It is a comparison of published guidance, not a ranking. The label sewn into your garment determines which row applies.
| Source or garment category | Wash temperature and cycle | Detergent, bleach and additives | Closure preparation | Drying guidance |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Carhartt examples | Varies by garment; published examples include cold washing for some categories and warm washing for others. | Follow the individual care label, including its bleach restrictions. | Close zippers for machine washing and drying; use a laundry net for certain long or slim pull-tabs. | Varies by category; examples include medium tumble drying. |
| Patagonia nylon/spandex and fiber-blend guidance | Generally cold or warm water with the garment’s label taking priority. | Mild detergent; avoid fabric conditioners and dryer sheets because residue may impair wicking and reduce spandex longevity. | No universal closure rule stated; use the garment label and protect hardware from snagging. | Line dry or use low-heat tumble drying where the label permits. |
| Flame-resistant workwear | Use the dedicated manufacturer instructions; do not assume ordinary stretch-workwear settings. | Follow the protective garment’s specific detergent, bleach and additive rules. | Prepare closures as directed by the label; keep contaminated protective clothing out of improvised household processes. | Use only the drying method and heat specified for that protective item. |
| Carhartt WIP garment care | Each item has particular instructions on its own label. | Use the label’s instructions rather than a category-wide assumption. | Apply the label’s closure instructions; close zippers before machine laundering when applicable. | Use the label’s permitted method and heat. |

How to handle common problems
The garment feels less stretchy after washing
Stop using higher heat or unapproved additives until you have checked the label. Review whether the item was tumble dried at a permitted temperature, exposed to extra heat after the cycle, or treated with softener or dryer-sheet residue. Wash again only by the label-approved method and line dry if allowed. If the fabric remains permanently distorted, the elastic fibers or construction may already be damaged; laundering cannot restore lost elasticity.

The garment has a new snag or damaged zipper
Inspect every closure before the next wash. Close zippers fully, place long pull-tabs in a laundry net and separate hardware from delicate surfaces. Do not force a zipper that is bent or catching; repair it before laundering so the defect does not enlarge.
The item loses moisture-wicking performance
Residue from fabric conditioner or dryer sheets is one possible cause for nylon/spandex and other performance blends, according to Patagonia. Stop those products, use a label-compatible mild detergent and rinse according to the permitted cycle. If performance does not return, the fabric finish may have worn or the garment may have been exposed to unsuitable heat or chemicals.
The label and workplace instructions disagree
For protective or flame-resistant clothing, do not choose whichever instruction is more convenient. Pause laundering and ask the employer, safety officer or manufacturer for a definitive procedure. Protective performance is a safety requirement, not a cosmetic preference.
The care label is missing
Look for a product page or support document from the garment maker and identify the exact style or model. Do not rely on a generic instruction for an entire brand. Until the construction is confirmed, avoid bleach, softener, dryer sheets and high heat, and choose the least aggressive method that will safely clean the garment.
A repeatable wash-and-dry checklist
- Read the label: record temperature, cycle, bleach restrictions and drying method.
- Classify the garment: identify ordinary stretch workwear, performance nylon/spandex or flame-resistant protective clothing.
- Empty and inspect: remove objects, clear grit and check seams, panels and closures.
- Close zippers: fasten them completely; use a laundry net for long or slim pull-tabs when needed.
- Sort the load: separate colors, lint-producing items, abrasive hardware and garments with different instructions.
- Add compatible detergent: use mild detergent only when the label allows it; omit softener and dryer sheets for stretch-performance blends.
- Select the label-approved wash: use the specified temperature and the gentlest permitted cycle.
- Choose the permitted dry method: line dry when allowed, or tumble dry only at the stated heat.
- Remove promptly and inspect: check fit, stretch, seams and zipper operation before returning the garment to service.
- Record what worked: note the setting for that exact item, without transferring it to other garments.
What to remember for long-term fit
Stretch workwear keeps its intended fit when you minimize avoidable stress: follow the label, close zippers, prevent snagging, use compatible mild detergent, keep residue-producing additives away from performance blends, and control heat. The correct routine may be different for two garments that look identical. Treat every label as the final authority, and treat flame-resistant workwear as a separate safety category rather than an ordinary stretch item.
