Start with the pillow’s care label and filling, not its appearance. Synthetic, down and feather pillows can often be washed on a gentle cycle with a small amount of liquid detergent, then dried on a fill-appropriate setting. Memory-foam pillows should not go in a washing machine; spot-clean or gently hand-clean them and air-dry them instead. In every case, leave enough room for the pillow to move, fluff and reposition it during drying, and do not use or store it until the center is completely dry.

Identify the filling before adding water

Pillows that look identical can have very different cores, fabrics and construction. A care tag may permit machine washing for one pillow while prohibiting it for another. Read the pillow label first, then check the owner’s manuals for your washer and dryer. Appliance cycle names, temperature ranges and restrictions vary by model.

Filling Washing approach Drying approach Important qualification
Synthetic fiber Often machine washable if the label permits; use a gentle cycle, little liquid detergent and an extra rinse when available. Usually low heat when tumble drying is allowed. The pillow’s care tag controls temperature and whether tumble drying is permitted.
Down or feather Often machine washable if the label permits; balance the load with two pillows when possible. Use no-heat air fluff when the label and dryer guide allow it; shake and reposition repeatedly. The center must be dry before use or storage. A Whirlpool dryer manual warns that feather/down pillows may take two hours or longer, but that is not a universal timer.
Memory foam Do not machine wash under Whirlpool’s published guidance. Spot-clean or gently hand-clean only if the manufacturer allows water. Air dry completely; do not wring or apply prohibited heat. Foam products differ, so follow the specific pillow maker’s instructions before wet cleaning.
Unidentified or mixed fill Do not guess. Use the label or contact the manufacturer. Use only the method stated for that construction. If the label is missing, a conservative surface clean is safer than an unverified wash cycle.

Prepare the pillow, washer and dryer

  1. Remove pillowcases and removable covers. Wash a removable cover separately according to its own label. Do not assume the cover’s instructions apply to the insert.
  2. Inspect seams and fabric. Repair a small opening before washing so filling cannot escape. If the pillow has a torn shell, washing can spread the damage.
  3. Clear the machines. Pillows need room to move through the wash and tumble freely in the dryer. Overloading traps detergent and moisture and encourages uneven filling.
  4. Check the manuals. Confirm that your washer permits bulky bedding and that your dryer permits the selected heat or air-fluff cycle. The exact names and temperatures differ by appliance.
  5. Use a small amount of liquid detergent. Whirlpool’s general pillow guidance calls for about one tablespoon. Excess detergent creates suds and residue that are difficult to remove from thick filling.

Machine-wash synthetic, down or feather pillows

Use this procedure only when the pillow’s care tag allows machine washing. Whirlpool’s general guidance covers synthetic, down and feather pillows, but the label on your pillow remains the deciding authority.

1. Balance the washer

Wash two similar pillows together when possible. The pair helps balance the drum during the spin. If you have only one pillow, consult the washer manual before adding other items; do not fill the drum with unrelated laundry simply to create weight.

#1 Best Overall
Handy Laundry Wool Dryer Balls 6-Pack, Reusable Natural Fabric Softener
  • SUPERIOR QUALITY WOOL: 100% New Zealand premium wool with no synthetic fillers, rolled into tight, extra-large balls and felted for a natural, long lasting product
  • REUSABLE FABRIC SOFTENER: Replace chemically infused dryer sheets and liquid fabric softeners with a natural alternative that will last more than a thousand dryer loads
  • SPEED UP DRYING TIME: As the dryer balls tumble around in the dryer, they lift and separate laundry allowing the hot air to circulate better and dry faster
  • SAVE ENERGY COSTS: Reduce appliance usage and electricity bills by shortening drying time up to 25%
  • REDUCE STATIC CLING: Toss them into the dryer and your clothing will dry faster, fluffier and softer, with fewer wrinkles and less static cling

2. Select a gentle cycle

Choose the washer’s gentle or delicate cycle. Set the warmest water temperature permitted by the care tag, not the warmest setting available on the machine. A label that specifies cold or cool water overrides general guidance.

3. Add approximately one tablespoon of liquid detergent

Measure the detergent rather than pouring a normal clothing load’s dose into the dispenser. A small dose cleans without leaving as much residue inside the fill. Avoid adding fabric softener unless the pillow maker specifically permits it.

4. Add an extra rinse when available

An additional rinse helps remove detergent from a thick pillow. It does not make an otherwise prohibited water temperature or cycle safe, so retain all label restrictions.

5. Transfer the pillows promptly

When the wash ends, remove the pillows promptly. Leaving saturated filling compressed in the drum can produce a musty odor and lets fibers settle into dense areas. Support the pillow with both hands when moving it so a wet, heavy insert does not pull against its seams.

Hand-wash pillows when the label calls for it

Hand washing is useful when a care label prohibits a machine cycle or when the washer cannot accommodate the pillow without crowding. Whirlpool’s hand-washing method applies to synthetic, down and feather pillows when hand washing is appropriate.

  1. Fill a clean basin or tub with warm water and dissolve a small amount of liquid detergent completely before immersing the pillow.
  2. Press and gently squeeze the pillow under the water so the solution moves through the fill. Do not scrub aggressively or pull at the shell.
  3. Drain and refill with clean water. Continue rinsing until the water runs clear and no longer feels sudsy.
  4. Press the pillow against the side of the basin to release water. Never twist, wring or tightly fold it; those actions can distort the shell and concentrate the filling.
  5. Wrap the pillow in clean towels and press down to draw out more moisture. Follow the care label for the next drying step.

A wet pillow can be much heavier than a dry one. If lifting it strains the seams or your appliance, stop and use a larger basin or a professional cleaner rather than forcing the item through a small opening.

Dry pillows without creating clumps

Washing removes soil, but drying determines whether the filling stays evenly distributed. Match heat to the filling, leave space for movement and interrupt the cycle to redistribute the contents.

Synthetic pillows: low heat when tumble drying is allowed

For a synthetic pillow whose tag permits a dryer, Whirlpool suggests low heat. Place the pillow in a dryer large enough for it to expand and tumble. High heat can damage fibers, shrink or weaken the shell, or set a care-label violation into the material; low heat is a recommendation, not permission to ignore the label.

Pause the dryer periodically. Remove the pillow, hold it by opposite edges and shake it, then press and fluff thicker areas before returning it. If one side feels dense or cool, rotate the pillow so that area receives more airflow.

Down and feather pillows: no-heat air fluff where permitted

Whirlpool suggests the no-heat air-fluff setting for down or feather pillows, subject to the pillow tag and dryer guide. Air fluff tumbles the pillow without adding heat, but it still requires time and supervision. Shake and reposition the pillow several times during the cycle so feathers do not settle into a single mass.

A Whirlpool Use & Care Guide states that feather/down pillows may require “two hours or longer.” Treat that as guidance from that particular appliance manual, not a universal drying duration. Stop only when the center is dry, not merely when the outside feels warm and fluffy.

Air drying: use it when the label requires it

Some pillows must be air dried. Lay the pillow in a clean, well-ventilated place where air can reach both sides, and turn and fluff it regularly. Do not stack damp pillows or put one on a surface that holds moisture against the shell. Air drying can take substantially longer than a dryer; the care label and the pillow’s moisture level determine when it is finished.

Use dryer balls only as an optional aid

Whirlpool says dryer balls can help fluff pillows. Its separate explanation of wool dryer balls describes them as separating layers of laundry to improve movement. That does not establish that balls prevent or cure internal clumping in every pillow, and they cannot make a prohibited heat setting safe. Use them only if the pillow and dryer instructions allow them, and treat regular shaking and repositioning as the essential steps.

Verify that the center is dry

Before use or storage, squeeze the pillow in several places, including the middle. Compare the center with the edges: a cool, heavy, firm or damp-feeling core means drying is incomplete. The Whirlpool dryer manual warns that pillows must be dry in the center to prevent mildew.

  • Return a damp pillow to the permitted dryer or air-drying location.
  • Fluff and rotate it so the compressed center is exposed to airflow.
  • Check again after the next interval rather than relying on a preset timer.
  • Do not sleep on, cover or store the pillow while any interior moisture remains.

Do not mask residual dampness with fragrance or a fresh pillowcase. Odor, discoloration or a persistently wet core indicates that the pillow needs more drying and possibly replacement if mildew has developed.

Clean memory-foam pillows without breaking the foam

Memory foam requires a different method. Whirlpool’s published pillow guidance says memory-foam pillows should never be washed in a washing machine because the foam can break apart. That is the company’s guidance; the foam manufacturer’s label remains the final authority for your particular product.

For a light stain

  1. Remove the cover if it is designed to come off, and follow the cover’s separate care label.
  2. Mix lukewarm water with a small amount of detergent.
  3. Dampen a cloth, blot the stained area and avoid saturating the foam.
  4. Blot with clean water to remove detergent, then press with a dry towel.
  5. Air dry the foam completely in a ventilated place before replacing the cover.

For deeper cleaning when water is permitted

Whirlpool describes gently squeezing foam in soapy water, rinsing and avoiding wringing. Support the foam with both hands, use light pressure and let it recover its shape rather than twisting or compressing it sharply. Rinse until soap is gone, press out water without wringing and allow the entire piece to air dry. If the manufacturer’s label prohibits immersion, stop at surface cleaning instead.

Troubleshoot clumps, odors and damage

What you notice Likely cause What to do
One side is lumpy immediately after washing Filling settled while wet or the load was unbalanced. Run only the label-approved rinse or spin if needed, then shake and redistribute the filling before drying.
Pillow is still damp in the middle The exterior dried first; the cycle ended too soon or airflow was restricted. Continue the permitted drying method, pause to fluff and rotate, and check the center again.
Strong detergent smell or stiff areas Too much detergent or insufficient rinsing. Use an additional label-approved rinse. Measure about one tablespoon on the next wash rather than using a full clothing-load dose.
Feathers collect in corners The pillow was not shaken and repositioned during drying. Stop the dryer, massage and redistribute the fill gently, then resume the permitted no-heat or other label-approved setting.
Shell seam opens Existing weakness, excessive mechanical stress or an overloaded appliance. Stop the cycle, contain loose filling and repair or replace the pillow. Do not continue washing a pillow that cannot contain its fill.
Foam feels torn, crumbly or misshapen Machine washing, wringing or unsuitable heat damaged the foam. Do not machine-wash it again. Follow the foam maker’s care instructions; replacement may be necessary if the core has broken apart.
Musty smell after drying Moisture remains inside the pillow. Dry through the center with more airflow and periodic fluffing. If mildew or persistent odor remains, discontinue use.

How often to wash pillows

Whirlpool’s general pillow article recommends washing pillows at least twice a year. Treat that as the company’s general advice, not a measured study result or a rule that overrides your pillow’s label. Wash sooner when the care instructions permit it and the pillow has absorbed sweat, spilled liquid or visible soil. Removable covers may require more frequent laundering than the pillow insert.

Between washes, keep the pillow dry, use a clean cover and address small stains promptly with the method allowed for its filling. Avoid repeatedly wetting a pillow that cannot dry completely in your available space.

A quick decision checklist

  • Label checked: You know whether the insert may be machine washed, hand washed, tumble dried or air dried.
  • Filling identified: Synthetic, down/feather, memory foam or an unknown construction has been distinguished.
  • Machine capacity confirmed: The pillow can move freely, and two similar pillows can balance the washer when appropriate.
  • Detergent measured: Approximately one tablespoon of liquid detergent is used for the general machine-wash method, unless the label specifies otherwise.
  • Temperature matched: Water and heat stay within the care tag’s limits.
  • Drying supervised: The pillow is shaken, fluffed and repositioned during drying instead of being left untouched for one timed cycle.
  • Center tested: No cool, heavy or damp core remains before the pillow is covered, used or stored.

When washing is the wrong choice

Do not improvise a wash for an unlabeled pillow with a fragile shell, glued components, electrical features or severe structural damage. Do not put memory foam in a machine simply because a removable cover is machine washable. Likewise, do not use high heat to shorten drying time when the label specifies low heat, air fluff or air drying. If you cannot provide the required space, airflow or cycle, replacing a badly soiled pillow may be safer than trapping moisture or destroying the filling.
