Use the jacket’s sewn-in care label as the final authority. For most lightweight waterproof shells, close all zippers, remove loose dirt, wash in warm water with a small amount of mild liquid or technical-wear detergent, skip fabric softener and chlorine bleach, and rinse thoroughly. Dry exactly as the label permits. Many conventional shells tolerate low or gentle tumble heat that can reactivate the durable water repellent (DWR) finish, but some constructions—including GORE-TEX SHAKEDRY—must not be tumble-dried or treated with DWR.
DWR and the waterproof membrane do different jobs. DWR makes rain bead and roll off the outer face fabric; the membrane or coated barrier keeps liquid water from passing through. A jacket can therefore look wet on the outside after DWR wears off while still keeping you dry inside.

Why careful washing matters
Rain shells collect body oils, sunscreen, dirt and atmospheric grime. Those residues can interfere with the face fabric and make the jacket feel clammy even when the waterproof barrier is intact. Washing is maintenance, not just stain removal, but an unsuitable cleaner or excessive heat can leave residue, strip the finish or damage seam tape and laminated layers.

There is no universal waterproof-jacket cycle. A two-layer shell, a three-layer shell, an insulated rain jacket and a SHAKEDRY garment may have different limits. GORE-TEX states on its official outerwear care page, “Be sure to read the manufacturer’s care tag first.” Treat that label’s temperature, cycle and drying symbols as controlling instructions.

Before washing: identify the garment and prepare it
1. Read every care symbol
Find the sewn-in label, usually inside a side seam or pocket. Note the permitted water temperature, cycle, spin, bleach symbol, ironing restriction and drying symbol. Look for warnings about a membrane, insulation, leather, stretch panels, taped seams or a special finish. If the label is missing or unreadable, contact the manufacturer rather than guessing a temperature for a valuable jacket.
2. Check for construction-specific exceptions
Standard waterproof shells often allow gentle washing and some low heat. GORE-TEX SHAKEDRY is a clear exception: its official instructions say not to tumble-dry, iron or apply DWR. An insulated or mixed-material jacket may also need a more sensitive routine than an unlined shell. Do not transfer the care settings from one model to another simply because both are called “waterproof.”
3. Close and protect the hardware
- Close the main zipper, pit zips and pocket zippers.
- Fasten hook-and-loop cuffs, storm flaps, snaps and drawcords as the maker directs.
- Empty every pocket and remove detachable accessories that have their own care labels.
- Brush or shake off dried mud, grit and loose debris. Do not scrub aggressively across seam tape.
These steps keep hooks and open zippers from catching the shell and prevent grit from being driven into the fabric during the wash.

Use a small amount of liquid technical-wear cleaner or a mild liquid detergent. Technical cleaners are formulated to reduce residue on performance fabrics; a mild liquid detergent is an acceptable alternative when the label does not require a specialty product. Measure sparingly: extra detergent does not make a shell cleaner and can be difficult to rinse from a laminate.

| Product or additive | Use | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Liquid technical-wear cleaner | Preferred general option | Designed for technical fabrics and less likely to leave heavy residue when used as directed. |
| Mild liquid detergent | Acceptable alternative | Use a small amount and rinse thoroughly. |
| Powder detergent | Avoid for GORE-TEX care | GORE-TEX advises against it because residue can remain in the fabric. |
| Fabric softener | Do not use | It can coat fibers and impair the jacket’s performance. |
| Chlorine bleach | Do not use unless the garment label explicitly permits it | GORE-TEX specifically advises against chlorine bleach on its outerwear. |
Never combine detergent with fabric softener, scent boosters or bleach. If your washing machine has previously dispensed softener, clean the dispenser before washing the shell so old residue is not released into the cycle.
How to wash a lightweight waterproof jacket
- Load the machine correctly. Wash the jacket by itself or with similarly light technical garments. Avoid a load containing towels, denim, metal hardware or items that shed lint. Do not overfill the drum; the shell needs room to move and rinse.
- Select the label-approved water temperature. Warm water is common guidance for a typical shell, but the sewn-in label takes priority. Do not assume that “waterproof” means hot-water safe.
- Choose a gentle cycle. Use the mildest machine cycle the label allows and a moderate or low spin if specified. A harsh agitation or very high spin can stress seam tape, elastic and laminated panels.
- Add only a small measured dose. Put liquid technical cleaner or mild liquid detergent in the correct dispenser. Do not add softener or bleach.
- Run an extra rinse when the machine or label allows it. Patagonia’s care guidance recommends an extra rinse to remove detergent residue. If your machine has no dedicated extra-rinse option, run a second rinse without adding cleaner.
- Inspect before drying. Check the pockets, cuffs and hood for trapped grit. If a greasy mark remains, follow the garment maker’s spot-cleaning advice rather than applying household solvents or scrubbing hard.
GORE-TEX’s care guidance is available at gore-tex.com/support/care/outerwear; Patagonia publishes a separate step-by-step guide at patagonia.com/stories/guides/care-repair/how-to-wash-waterproof-jacket/story-178390.html. Their advice overlaps on gentle cleaning but differs on specific drying details, which is why the garment label must decide the final cycle.
How to dry the jacket without harming the finish
Remove the jacket promptly after washing, reshape it and check the label before choosing air or machine drying. Keep it away from radiators, open flames and direct high heat. Excess heat can damage adhesives, coatings, elastic and face fabrics even when the jacket appears dry.
| Drying route | When it applies | Documented guidance |
|---|---|---|
| Line or air drying | When the label permits it, or when the construction forbids tumble drying | GORE-TEX recommends line-drying because it uses less energy and reduces environmental impact. |
| Low-heat tumble drying | Only for garments whose labels permit gentle machine drying | Patagonia’s guide recommends low heat for at least 30 minutes or until the jacket is dry and warm. |
| Line dry, then short tumble | Only where the garment instructions allow both methods | GORE-TEX recommends line drying followed by a further 20 minutes of tumble drying to reactivate DWR. |
| No tumble drying | Required for constructions such as GORE-TEX SHAKEDRY | The SHAKEDRY instructions prohibit tumble drying, ironing and DWR treatment. |
Air-drying procedure
- Hang the shell on a broad hanger or lay it flat if the label calls for flat drying.
- Keep it in a ventilated place out of direct high heat and harsh, prolonged sunlight.
- Open pockets and pit zips so air can circulate.
- Allow it to become completely dry before storing it.
GORE-TEX says, “We recommend line-drying your garment; it uses less energy and reduces your impact on the environment.” Air drying is the conservative choice when the label is unclear, but it may not reactivate DWR as effectively as permitted gentle heat.

Low-heat tumble-drying procedure
If the care label permits a dryer, select the lowest approved heat and a gentle setting. Patagonia’s guide calls for low heat for at least 30 minutes or until the garment is dry and warm. GORE-TEX describes a different sequence for applicable garments: line-dry first, then tumble-dry for a further 20 minutes to reactivate DWR. These are construction-specific recommendations, not a universal 20- or 30-minute rule. Do not combine them or extend the time merely to chase a stronger beading effect.
Test the finish after the jacket is dry
- Lay the dry jacket flat or hang it over a clean surface.
- Sprinkle or drip a small amount of clean water onto the outer face fabric, away from an opening.
- Watch what happens. If droplets bead up and roll away, the DWR is still functioning adequately.
- If the fabric darkens and holds water rather than shedding it, the face fabric has likely wet out and may need further care.
Wet-out alone does not prove that the membrane has failed. Patagonia explains that the membrane is the actual “engine” of waterproof gear, while DWR is the outer treatment that helps water bead. A worn DWR can therefore make the exterior look saturated while the inside remains dry.
When and how to reproof
Do not apply a waterproofing product automatically after every wash. First clean the jacket, rinse away residue and dry it using the permitted method. Reproof only when water still fails to bead after that process and the care label allows a DWR treatment.

Check compatibility before buying a treatment
- Confirm that the product is intended for the jacket’s membrane, face fabric and construction.
- Follow the jacket maker’s instructions about spray-on versus wash-in application.
- Do not use any DWR on GORE-TEX SHAKEDRY; its official instructions prohibit it.
- Read the treatment label for ventilation, application distance, curing and heat requirements.
GORE-TEX allows a compatible pump-spray or wash-in DWR product in applicable cases. A spray-on DWR treatment generally lets you target the outer face fabric and avoid coating the inside, but the garment label and treatment directions control. Apply only the amount specified; excess product can leave an uneven feel or residue.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
Spray-on application
- Clean and dry the jacket first.
- Work in a well-ventilated area and protect nearby surfaces.
- Keep the jacket on a hanger or lay it flat as the product directions require.
- Apply an even coat to the outside, paying attention to shoulders, hood, sleeves and areas exposed to rain.
- Allow the treatment to cure for the time stated on its label, using only the permitted heat setting afterward.
Wash-in application
Use wash-in treatment only if both the jacket maker and the product maker approve it. Wash-in formulas contact the whole garment, including areas that may not need treatment, and can be unsuitable for some linings or insulation. Measure precisely and run the specified cycle; never improvise by mixing a wash-in product with ordinary detergent.

GORE-TEX SHAKEDRY
SHAKEDRY is not a normal shell-care case. The official instructions say not to tumble dry, iron or apply DWR. Follow the exact label and product instructions even if another GORE-TEX jacket in your closet tolerates low heat.
Insulated waterproof jackets
Insulation can clump, retain water and require additional drying time. The label may specify a particular cycle, temperature or drying method. Without the exact model and label, no safe universal temperature or cycle can be prescribed. If the garment remains damp inside, continue only with the permitted method and inspect it regularly rather than turning up the heat.
Mixed-material jackets
Leather trim, stretch fabric, reflective transfers, fleece panels and glued or taped details can impose stricter limits than the waterproof fabric itself. The most restrictive component determines the safe routine. Remove detachable liners or accessories only when their labels permit it.

Troubleshooting common results
The outside wets out immediately after washing
Confirm that the jacket was fully rinsed and dried. Detergent residue can interfere with beading, and DWR may need the label-approved gentle heat to reactivate. Test again when the jacket is completely dry. If it still absorbs water, check compatibility and consider reproofing rather than repeatedly washing.
The inside feels damp during rain
First distinguish condensation from leakage. Reduced breathability caused by a dirty or wet-out face fabric can feel clammy even when the membrane is intact. If water enters at a damaged seam, torn fabric, failed zipper or delaminated tape, cleaning and reproofing will not repair that structural problem; consult the manufacturer’s repair service.
There is a detergent smell or slippery feel
Run one or more plain-water rinses according to the machine and garment instructions. Do not add bleach, softener or another cleaner to mask the odor. Let the jacket dry fully and inspect the face fabric before considering any DWR product.
The jacket was accidentally washed with softener or bleach
Do not assume the finish is permanently ruined. Rinse thoroughly with the label-approved cycle and inspect the fabric, seam tape and hardware. If the face fabric no longer beads, seek the manufacturer’s care or repair advice before applying a treatment. Chlorine bleach can cause damage that reproofing cannot reverse.
The dryer setting was too hot
Stop the cycle and let the jacket cool. Check for warped film, peeling seam tape, brittle elastic, discoloration or a changed hand feel. If any structural damage is visible, contact the maker; do not try to conceal it with DWR.
A simple care decision tree
- Does the label prohibit tumble drying or DWR? If yes, air-dry and follow that prohibition.
- Does the label permit gentle heat? If yes, use only the listed low or gentle setting and time guidance.
- Is the jacket dirty or oily? Wash with a small amount of liquid technical cleaner or mild liquid detergent, then rinse thoroughly.
- Does water bead after drying? If yes, stop; no reproofing is indicated by the cited guidance.
- Does water still fail to bead? Check product compatibility and apply a permitted DWR treatment according to its instructions.
- Is the problem a tear, failed seam or delamination? Seek repair rather than adding more detergent or water repellent.
Storage and future washes
Store the jacket completely dry, loosely hung or folded without compressing it under heavy gear. Keep zippers closed and avoid leaving it crumpled in a damp pack or car. When the shell becomes dirty or its performance changes, repeat the label-approved wash rather than washing on an arbitrary schedule. The goal is to remove performance-limiting residue while minimizing unnecessary abrasion, heat and chemical exposure.
