To capture lazy-loaded images reliably, first scroll the relevant page regions into view to trigger loading, then wait for each image to load successfully and decode before calling page.screenshot(). Neither page.goto() with waitUntil: 'load' nor networkidle2 guarantees that deferred images are ready.
Why Puppeteer can capture a page before its images are ready
Navigation and image readiness are separate conditions. Browsers may defer native loading="lazy" images until they are within a browser-calculated distance of the viewport. That distance is not a fixed value to rely on across browser contexts, and lazy images may not be included in the eager-image basis for the window load event. A full-page screenshot expands the captured area; it does not itself bring every region into view to trigger lazy loading.

networkidle2 is a network condition: Puppeteer defines it as no more than two network connections for at least 500 ms. It does not prove that every image you want has been requested, loaded successfully, decoded, or painted.
Wait for images before taking a full-page screenshot
For a long page, visit successive viewport-sized regions before checking images. Then wait for successful loads and image decoding, and only then capture. This example includes a bounded wait and reports images that fail to load or decode instead of silently treating them as ready.

const puppeteer = require('puppeteer');
(async () => {
const browser = await puppeteer.launch();
try {
const page = await browser.newPage();
await page.goto('https://example.com', { waitUntil: 'load' });
// Trigger viewport-based lazy loading across the document.
await page.evaluate(async () => {
const step = Math.max(1, window.innerHeight);
const height = document.documentElement.scrollHeight;
for (let y = 0; y < height; y += step) {
window.scrollTo(0, y);
await new Promise(resolve =>
requestAnimationFrame(() => resolve())
);
}
window.scrollTo(0, 0);
});
// Wait for images present after scrolling. A failed image is recorded,
// not allowed to masquerade as a successful one.
await page.waitForFunction(() => {
return [...document.images].every(img =>
img.complete && img.naturalWidth > 0
);
}, { timeout: 30000 });
const imageResults = await page.evaluate(async () => {
return Promise.all([...document.images].map(async (img, index) => {
try {
await img.decode();
return { index, src: img.currentSrc || img.src, ok: true };
} catch (error) {
return {
index,
src: img.currentSrc || img.src,
ok: false,
error: String(error)
};
}
}));
});
const failedImages = imageResults.filter(result => !result.ok);
if (failedImages.length) {
console.warn('Images that did not decode:', failedImages);
// Choose whether to continue with a partial screenshot or throw here.
}
await page.screenshot({ path: 'page.png', fullPage: true });
} finally {
await browser.close();
}
})();
The readiness predicate checks img.complete && img.naturalWidth > 0: complete alone is not enough, because a broken image can also be complete. decode() resolves when image data is ready to use and can reject if the request fails, the source changes during decoding, or the data is corrupt. Handling rejection lets you choose explicitly whether to accept a partial capture or fail the job.
Account for content that changes while scrolling
The sample takes a single document height before scrolling. A page may insert new content or images as you move down it, change image sources, or load content inside nested scroll containers. For dynamic pages, repeat the scroll-and-check cycle until the relevant image set is stable, or use a site-specific readiness condition. Move the actual nested container when the page’s lazy-loading logic observes that container rather than the window. MDN describes IntersectionObserver as a mechanism for callbacks when an element intersects a viewport or other root; lazy loading is one of its use cases.

Puppeteer’s waitForFunction supports timeout and polling options; its documented default wait timeout is 30 seconds. Keep a finite timeout so a failed resource or permanently changing page cannot leave a capture job waiting indefinitely.

Adapt the wait to the screenshot you need
Viewport-only capture
For a screenshot of the visible viewport, wait only for images in the captured region or the target element. Waiting on every image in a long document can hold up a capture for images that will never appear in the screenshot. A region-scoped predicate can check only the target’s image elements, while still requiring successful loading and handling decode failures.

Full-page capture
For fullPage: true, scroll through the relevant page regions first, then run the readiness check and capture. If the page lazily populates content as it is visited, re-query images after scrolling rather than relying on a list captured beforehand. Puppeteer documents fullPage as extending capture beyond the viewport; it does not replace the triggering scroll.
Nested scrolling and observer-driven pages
If the images sit in a scrollable panel, scrolling window may not intersect them with the panel’s observer root. Identify the container used by the page and scroll that element through its contents. For pages that rely on more than native image loading, such as application code that inserts images after an observer callback, wait for the application’s relevant state as well as image success and decode.

Common failures and fixes
- Images are missing even though navigation completed: Navigation completion does not trigger every lazy region. Scroll through the captured content before waiting for images.
networkidle2returns but the screenshot is incomplete: It only describes network connections, not the intended image set or decode state. Add an image readiness check.- The wait passes but a broken image appears: Do not test
completealone. Require a nonzeronaturalWidthand decide how to report failed images. - The decode step rejects: The image may have failed, changed source during decoding, or contained corrupt data. Record the image URL and error; retry only if the page can reasonably recover, otherwise skip it or fail the capture clearly.
- The wait times out on a page with optional or intentionally broken assets: Identify whether those images belong in the capture. Scope the predicate to required content and report excluded failures rather than waiting on every document image.
- Images appear after the check: The page may insert images while scrolling or change sources dynamically. Re-query after the trigger pass and repeat until the relevant set is stable.
- Only content in a panel remains absent: The observed scroll root may be a nested container, not the window. Scroll the correct element to activate its loading behavior.

ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server for developers. Make one GET request to capture a URL; its screenshot options include full-page capture with lazy images loaded. Placeholders, consent handling, and page failures are handled as part of its capture workflow: it accepts cookie or consent banners like a visitor and removes 60+ known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture, with each step optional. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed; response headers identify the page verdict and billing status.
