In CloudConvert’s capture-website task, set wait_for_element to a CSS selector that appears when the specific JavaScript-rendered content you need is ready. For example, wait for #results-ready rather than body if the page shell appears before its data. This waits for the selected element; it is not a documented guarantee that all JavaScript or network activity has finished.
Set a readiness selector in the capture task
CloudConvert’s Website Screenshot API example uses wait_for_element: "body". A more specific selector is usually a better signal for a dynamic page: choose an element tied to the content you actually need in the capture, such as a results container populated by the page’s JavaScript.
The operation requires a page URL and an output format. Add an export/url task if you want the completed job to provide an export link.

Choose a selector that represents the content you need
- Generic shell:
bodyis broad. It may be present while data-driven content is still loading. - Content container: a selector such as
#results-readyis more useful when that element appears only after the relevant content has rendered. - Be precise: avoid selectors that already exist before the page has completed the particular rendering step you care about.
CloudConvert says its headless Chrome browser waits for a custom CSS selector. Its documentation does not specify whether the selector must be visible or merely present in the DOM, how long the selector wait lasts, or what happens if it never appears. Do not treat wait_for_element as a documented “wait for all JavaScript” or “network idle” option.
Match the output format to the result
Use an image format when you need a screenshot, or PDF when you need a document. CloudConvert’s Website Screenshot API describes PNG and JPG screenshots; the capture-website operation documentation lists PDF as an output option. Available parameters vary by output format, so confirm the applicable options in the operation documentation before relying on a setting.

The service page also describes full-page screenshots and viewport and zoom controls. CloudConvert says the screenshot API is based on the latest version of Chrome for PNG and JPG captures. These are vendor descriptions, not a guarantee that every site will render identically to a visitor’s browser.
Handle job completion separately from page readiness
wait_for_element concerns when the capture task proceeds with the webpage. It is separate from waiting for the CloudConvert job itself to finish. Asynchronous job creation returns a job in processing status. For longer-running jobs, CloudConvert recommends webhooks; it also documents a synchronous create-and-wait endpoint, while cautioning that long waits can hit network timeouts and queueing can extend processing.

capture-websitetask and the readiness selector. - For an asynchronous workflow, track job status or configure a webhook to learn when processing completes.
- Use an
export/urltask when you need an export link for the captured output.
CloudConvert states that jobs are automatically deleted 24 hours after they have ended. Check its current data and retention terms for operational or privacy decisions; this retention statement alone does not describe all handling of your data.
Troubleshoot captures that are early or incomplete
- The screenshot shows a loading shell: the selector may be too broad or may appear before the needed data. Select an element associated with the completed content instead of
body. - The capture does not proceed as expected: check that the selector is valid CSS and that the target page actually inserts that element. CloudConvert’s inspected documentation does not specify selector timeout or failure behavior, so do not assume a particular error or recovery rule.
- Some asynchronous content is still missing: the selected element may appear before other components finish. Choose a selector that signals the relevant content’s readiness; the option is not documented as waiting for all page activity.
- The job is still processing: inspect the job’s completion status separately from the page selector setting. Consider a webhook for long-running work rather than holding a client connection open.
- Output options do not match the requested format: consult the capture operation documentation, because parameters can differ between image and PDF output.
