What to test, and where

For Unity, the XR Device Simulator maps keyboard and mouse input to movement and interaction. Unity Mock HMD places a simulated headset view in the Game view, but does not simulate input or tracking, so use it for view and layout checks rather than full headset behavior. Unity XR Simulation is described for simulating AR apps in the Editor; it should not be treated as validation of VR headset optics or performance. Meta XR Simulator supports simulated headset and hand input, tracking controls, synthetic rooms, and multi-client sessions for supported OpenXR apps. Build a repeatable visual test
1. Fix the scene and baseline
Choose a representative scene and write down an interaction sequence that exercises it the same way each time. Include the busiest reachable scene and UI states, not just a quiet demo area. Record the build, target device or simulator profile, and relevant rendering settings. Meta recommends disabling dynamic resolution and holding foveation at one known setting while comparing performance. Change one category at a time and rerun the same sequence so automatic quality changes do not conceal whether a change affects CPU or GPU load. See Meta’s Unity performance guidance.
2. Check launch and recentering
Inspect the first view after launch, then repeat the check after recentering. For Quest submissions, Meta’s VRC.Quest.Performance.3 says head-tracked graphics must appear within four seconds of launch or the app must show a loading indicator in VR. Confirm the experience begins in a useful, understandable orientation rather than leaving the user facing away from the relevant content. The live criteria are at Meta’s Quest VRC page.

3. Inspect center, edges, and transitions
Do not inspect only the center of the view. Look for clipping, hard-to-target controls, text that appears only after an unexpected head turn, and overlays that remain fixed to the screen when they should follow the scene (or vice versa). Exercise menus, dialogs, captions, status and error information, and targets both at the center and near view boundaries. Repeat after camera cuts, teleports, changes in viewing distance, full-screen effects, and scene transitions. For 2D Android layouts, Meta’s guidance calls for checks at 360 and 1280 dp, at layout breakpoints, and between breakpoint pairs; these are layout widths, not headset field-of-view measurements. Recheck affected views after each visual change.
4. Check readability and redundant cues
Verify that progression text and controls are legible in the intended view, not merely at a desktop-sized preview. Meta’s VRC.Quest.Accessibility.2 says: “Text and in-app controls and elements necessary for app progression should be clearly legible.” Meta also recommends clear direction through visual, audio, or haptic feedback, and color-blindness options or other redundant cues such as pairing color with pattern. Treat these as platform recommendations and verify the current requirements for your target platform.

5. Compare rendering and profile demanding content
Use the same device or profile, scene, sequence, dynamic-resolution setting, and foveation setting when comparing a change. Capture frame rate, CPU/GPU time, and render scale, and note visible artifacts alongside timing. Meta’s Unity guidance describes device profiling over ADB or Wi-Fi, Unity real-time render statistics, overdraw visualization, the Frame Debugger, and frame-buffer inspection. GPU profiler draw-call totals may be affected by profiling overhead, so compare builds using the same method and conditions rather than treating one capture as an absolute measurement.
For the cited Quest performance check, Meta says to run the content for its duration or 45 minutes, whichever is shorter. The Quest VRC page lists 85% render scaling for most of the experience as recommended in the Meta Horizon Store column, not as a universal requirement for every headset or store. Check the live platform page because Meta says its linked test plans are slightly out of date.

Finish on the target headset
Install and run the final candidate build on the hardware it is meant to support. Check device-specific field of view and optics, installation and launch, recentering, and sustained behavior under the demanding sequence. Meta’s cited device-level field-of-view workflow names Quest 3S, Quest 3, and Quest Pro. Its Unity route can also use Editor Play Mode, Quest Link, or Meta XR Simulator for simulation, but those are not substitutes for the final headset review. Meta puts the limitation plainly: “Testing with a simulator doesn’t replace final on-device validation.” See Meta’s testing guidance.
Keep a short comparison log for each run: build identifier, headset or simulator profile, scene and sequence, rendering settings, performance captures, and the visual issue or improvement observed. This makes it easier to distinguish a real change from a different test setup.

Common problems and fixes
- A simulator looks right, but the headset does not. Recheck on the target hardware: simulated views cannot confirm actual optics, field of view, or sustained device behavior.
- Performance comparisons fluctuate between runs. Hold the scene, sequence, device/profile, dynamic resolution, and foveation constant. Change one class of rendering work at a time.
- Mock HMD controls or tracking seem wrong. Mock HMD does not simulate input or tracking. Use a tool that supports simulated input, or validate tracking behavior on hardware.
- A profiler reports a surprising draw-call total. Meta cautions that profiling overhead can affect GPU profiler draw-call totals. Compare captures made with the same profiling setup.
- Text or controls disappear at the edges or after movement. Repeat the visual sweep near view boundaries and after recentering, teleports, camera cuts, and distance changes; correct layout or placement and rerun the sequence.
