Visit Hōlei Sea Arch only from its designated observation area, and stay well back from the cliff edge and ocean. The short approach includes rough, uneven lava rock; strong winds, high waves, unpredictable surf and currents make this coast hazardous. Check current Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park alerts and road conditions before you go, then obey posted signs and barriers.
Where is the Hōlei Sea Arch viewpoint?
Follow Chain of Craters Road to its end. The National Park Service places the designated observation area about 1,000 feet (300 m) past the gate, on the right. Follow the marked route and remain in that area; do not cross barriers or leave the route to get closer or take a photograph. Check the NPS Hōlei Sea Arch directions and follow signs at the site, since access arrangements can change.

How long is the walk, and what is the path like?
The NPS estimates 20–30 minutes for the visit. The route starts on paved road, but the approach just before the viewing area is rough, uneven lava rock. It is not a uniformly paved or smooth path, so visitors with mobility limitations or unsteady footing should assess whether that surface is manageable. The NPS recommends sturdy, closed-toe shoes for rough volcanic terrain.

The National Park Service warns that “In coastal areas, unpredictable waves and strong currents make the ocean particularly dangerous.” Keep well back from cliff edges and water, stay in the designated observation area, and heed ropes, barriers, closure signs and ranger instructions. Cliff edges may be unstable; lava can be sharp, uneven or unstable, and cracks may be present. Do not climb the lava, approach the waterline, or enter a closed area.

The arch is about 90 feet (27.4 m) high and was cut into a lava-flow cliff about 550 years ago, according to the NPS activity page. It is a natural feature that will eventually crumble as the coast changes; its age does not indicate when that might happen.
Can you swim at coastal sites in the park?
The NPS says there are very few sheltered swimming sites in the park and that rough seas, high surf and strong, unpredictable currents are typical. Its backcountry guidance says: “Avoid entering the open ocean.” Hōlei Sea Arch is a viewpoint, not a swimming or tide-pool destination. How the viewpoint differs from other coastal destinations
The Sea Arch stop is a short outing from the end of a road. Other coastal destinations in the park can require much longer, steeper or more exposed hikes; do not assume they offer comparable access or footing.

Remote backcountry trips are not extensions of the short arch stop. They may involve strenuous hiking and overnight stays. The NPS requires a backcountry permit and check-in/safety briefing for backcountry travel and overnight visits; check its current permit and route information before planning one.

What to check before setting out
- Check live park alerts and conditions. Review the park safety guidance and official alerts, road and trail status, weather and air quality shortly before departure. Conditions and closures change.
- Recheck during your visit. Follow signs and ranger instructions on site. An older closure notice does not establish that a route is open now. For example, an NPS severe-weather release dated March 12 and updated March 13, 2026, described temporary closures at that time and warned that additional unannounced closures could occur; it is not a live status report. See the NPS release alongside current alerts.
- Prepare for exposed, uneven ground. Wear sturdy, closed-toe shoes; carry water, first-aid supplies and a flashlight; use sun protection in exposed lava fields; and check the weather. Preparation does not make closed routes, unstable edges or the ocean safe.
The NPS activity page says the park entrance fee applies, there is no separate fee for the activity, and reservations are not required. Those details can change, so confirm current park information before travel.
