Follow the site manager’s current instructions, stay on designated visitor routes, and leave archaeological material and structures undisturbed. Rules differ by place, so check the official site information before you go—especially for access, bookings, photography, and closures.
Why site rules and marked routes matter
Archaeological places vary in condition, sensitivity, and management. A path, barrier, or closure may protect fragile structures, excavation areas, or other sensitive parts of a site. The ICOMOS International Cultural Heritage Tourism Charter (2022) describes site-specific measures such as limiting group sizes, restricting entry, closing sensitive areas, and requiring advance bookings. UNESCO’s World Heritage and Sustainable Tourism Programme likewise describes management tools that include fees, opening schedules, and access restrictions.

- Use only routes the site has designated for visitors; do not cross barriers or enter closed areas.
- Follow booking, group-size, timing, and supervision requirements.
- If a route or instruction is unclear, ask site staff rather than improvising.
Leave artifacts and structures untouched
Leave stones, pottery, bones, inscriptions, and other possible finds where they are. Do not collect, move, mark, or trade archaeological material. If you notice an object that may need attention, tell site staff and describe where you saw it. UNESCO’s 1956 Recommendation on International Principles Applicable to Archaeological Excavations addresses the protection of archaeological heritage and rules against antiquities trade that can encourage smuggling or undermine protection.
Be a considerate guest at living and sacred heritage
Some heritage places remain important to the people who live nearby or are connected to them. Treat yourself as a guest: follow local guidance, respect requests about access and conduct, and avoid assuming that a place is simply a backdrop for visitors. ICOMOS’s charter emphasizes host-community participation, community rights, and respect for the values and lifestyles associated with heritage places. Its earlier Heritage at Risk from Tourism (2001) also addresses tourism’s relationship with heritage and communities.

Ask before photographing people, ceremonies, or spaces that may be restricted. Photography rules vary by site, and permission to enter does not automatically mean permission to photograph everything.
Choose interpretation that respects the place
Look for information that explains a site accurately and respectfully, including its conservation needs and connections to local communities. ICOMOS states that responsible heritage tourism should provide “accurate and respectful interpretation, presentation, dissemination and communication.” A local guide, where available and suitable, can offer context rooted in the place and its community; follow the site’s guidance when choosing a tour or guide.
