Google Maps Timeline is managed in the mobile app, not in Maps on a computer. On a phone or tablet, open Google Maps, choose Your Timeline from your profile menu, and use the calendar to inspect visits and routes. You can remove one visit, selected dates, or all Timeline data, but deletion is permanent. Before deleting, check whether the Timeline copy exists on more than one device, whether you enabled an encrypted backup, and whether related location information is stored in other Google activity controls.
What Google Maps Timeline stores—and where you can manage it
Timeline is Google Maps’ record of places you visited and routes you traveled, organized by date. The current help guidance treats Timeline as device-based data: the mobile app reads and manages it from the phone or tablet, while Google Maps on a computer does not provide the Timeline view because the data comes directly from the device.

That means the first step is choosing the device that currently holds the history. If you have changed phones, use more than one phone or tablet, or restored a device from a backup, do not assume that deleting Timeline on one device changes every other copy.

- A signed-in Google Maps mobile app on Android or iPhone/iPad.
- An up-to-date app. Google’s Android instructions for the described Timeline entry point specify Maps version 11.106 or later. Google gives a separate minimum version for iPhone and iPad; because labels and availability can change, update Maps if Your Timeline is missing.
- Access to each phone or tablet whose local Timeline data you want to inspect or remove.
How to view your Google Maps Timeline
Android
- Open the Google Maps app and sign in to the Google Account associated with the Timeline.
- Tap your profile picture or initial in the upper-right corner.
- Tap Your Timeline.
- Use the calendar controls to choose the day, month, or date you want to inspect. The day view shows recorded visits and, when available, the route between them.
- Open an individual place or route if you need to check its details before deciding whether to remove it.
If you cannot see Your Timeline, update Maps through your device’s app store, verify that you are using the intended Google Account, and try again on the phone or tablet that collected the data. Timeline is not available as a normal Maps feature on a desktop browser.

iPhone and iPad
- Open Google Maps and make sure the correct Google Account is active.
- Tap your profile picture or initial, then choose Your Timeline if it appears in the account menu.
- Use the calendar to select the date you want to review.
- Tap a visit or route to see its recorded details.
Google’s iPhone and iPad instructions use a separate minimum app version from Android. If the menu is different or Timeline is unavailable, update the app and check the account currently signed in. The exact controls can differ by operating system and app release.
Choose what you want to remove
There are four distinct actions. Selecting the wrong one can either leave data behind or remove more history than intended.

Google warns that deleted Timeline data cannot be recovered. Read the confirmation screen carefully, especially when choosing an option that removes all activity rather than a single visit.
How to delete one visit
Use this method when one place, stop, or route is wrong and the rest of the day should remain.

- Open Google Maps on the phone or tablet that contains the record.
- Tap your profile picture or initial and open Your Timeline.
- Use the calendar to open the date containing the visit.
- Open the visit’s menu. Depending on the operating system and app version, this may be a three-dot menu or another overflow control beside the entry.
- Choose the delete or remove command and confirm.
- Return to the day view and verify that the visit no longer appears.
Because Google changes labels and layouts between Android and iOS releases, follow the wording displayed in your app rather than expecting identical buttons on both platforms.
How to delete selected dates or all Timeline history
Delete a date or date range
Open Your Timeline and look for the Timeline settings or deletion controls associated with the calendar and history view. Select the date or range you intend to remove, review the scope shown on the confirmation screen, and confirm the deletion. The available route can vary by platform and app version, so the important checks are the displayed start and end dates and whether the app says it is deleting only Timeline records.
Delete all Timeline data
- Open Google Maps and go to your profile menu.
- Open Your Timeline, then open Timeline settings or the data-management control.
- Choose the command to delete all Timeline data, if that is the outcome you want.
- Read the warning about permanent deletion and confirm only after checking the account, device, and date scope.
- Reopen Timeline to verify that the history is gone from that copy.
Deletion is permanent according to Google’s help guidance. If you may need the record later, use an available export option before deleting it and keep the exported file secure. An export is a separate file; deleting Timeline does not automatically erase a file you already saved elsewhere.

Turning Timeline off is different from removing its existing history. Use it when you want to stop future Timeline collection but may want to retain records already saved.

- In Google Maps, open your profile picture or initial and choose Your Timeline.
- Open Timeline settings.
- Choose the control to turn Timeline off.
- Read the confirmation carefully. On Android, Google describes separate choices for turning Timeline off and for turning it off while deleting activity.
- Confirm the option matching your goal.
If your objective is permanent removal, do not stop at the switch that merely pauses collection. Confirm that the screen says existing activity will be deleted, or perform the separate deletion action as well.
Set automatic deletion for older Timeline data
Google’s current help describes automatic deletion choices of 3 months, 18 months, or 36 months for Timeline data. These are retention settings for Timeline; they are not a promise that every Google record related to your location will disappear after the same period.
- Open Google Maps and go to Your Timeline.
- Open Timeline settings and find the automatic-deletion control.
- Select 3, 18, or 36 months.
- Save the setting and check the confirmation text for the account and device on which it applies.
Google is rolling out account and device changes, so the choices or labels you see may differ. If automatic deletion is not visible, update Maps and check Timeline settings again. Do not use auto-delete as a substitute for an immediate deletion request when a record must be removed now.
Understand devices, encrypted backups, and exports
Local Timeline data
Google says Timeline data is saved to the device. A phone replacement, factory reset, account change, or second device can therefore produce a different Timeline view from the one you expect. Check every relevant phone and tablet rather than treating one successful deletion as proof that all copies are gone.

Optional encrypted backup
Google Maps Help explains: “When you back up your Timeline data, Maps saves an encrypted copy of your data on Google’s servers.” Backup is optional and configured separately for each device.
Deleting a backup does not delete Timeline data saved locally on a device. Conversely, deleting Timeline on one device does not necessarily change another device or its backup. If you are trying to remove history completely, review the backup setting and each device copy as separate tasks.
Moving to a new phone
Before wiping an old phone, decide whether you want to preserve Timeline. Use Google’s export controls on a supported platform if you need an archive, and verify that the export completed before deleting local data. If you want the history on a new phone, review the backup and restore options shown in Timeline settings rather than assuming a general phone backup includes it.

Permanent removal checklist
- Delete the unwanted visit, dates, or all Timeline data in the app.
- Repeat the review on other phones or tablets that may contain a local copy.
- Check whether an encrypted Timeline backup is enabled and remove that backup if your goal includes server-held copies.
- Look for exported files in cloud storage, downloads, computer folders, or other destinations you selected and delete them separately if appropriate.
- Remember that copies made outside Google Maps are not controlled by the Timeline switch.
Timeline is not the same as Maps history
Google Maps history can include searches, directions, place views, and similar activity. It has separate controls. Google specifically says that deleting Maps history does not affect visits recorded in Timeline.
Use the control that matches the record you are trying to remove:

If your concern is broader than visits and routes, open Google’s account activity controls after handling Timeline. Search Services History and Web & App Activity may retain location-related information outside Timeline. Other Google products or photos can also have their own associated information.
Common problems and fixes
“Your Timeline” is missing
- Update Google Maps. Android guidance for the described entry point specifies version 11.106 or later; iPhone and iPad have a separate minimum version.
- Confirm that you are signed in to the account that collected the history.
- Try the phone or tablet that originally recorded the data.
- Do not use desktop Maps for this task; Google says Timeline is not available there.
A deleted visit still appears
- Check that you removed the visit from the correct date and account.
- Review another device that may contain its own local copy.
- Check whether an encrypted backup remains enabled.
- Refresh or reopen Maps after the confirmation has completed.
You deleted Maps history but the visit remains
This is expected when the record is in Timeline. Maps history and Timeline use separate controls. Return to Your Timeline and delete the visit or date there.

You turned Timeline off but old records remain
Turning Timeline off stops future collection; it is not automatically the same as deleting existing activity. Open Timeline settings again and choose the separate deletion option if you want old data removed.
You want to erase every location-related trace
No single Timeline action guarantees that result. Review Timeline on each device, optional backups, exported files, Maps history, Search Services History, Web & App Activity, and any other Google product that may have stored related information. Each service can have its own retention and deletion controls.
Which option should you choose?

What deletion does—and does not—mean
Deleting Timeline removes the selected records from the Timeline data you targeted, and Google says the deletion cannot be recovered. It does not automatically delete every location-related record held by another Google service, every local copy on another device, an optional encrypted backup, or an exported file. Those are separate places to review.
The safest sequence is to identify the exact record, select the narrowest deletion scope that meets your goal, read the confirmation, and then check devices, backups, and other activity controls only if your privacy goal extends beyond Timeline itself.
