How to View a Website’s Snapshot History (Wayback Machine and Archive.today)

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To view an older version of a website, open the Wayback Machine, enter the exact page URL (or the site domain), choose Browse History, and open a dated capture. If the page is missing, search for its assets or try Archive.today. An archive can show only what it recorded; a missing result does not prove that the page never existed.

How do I see an old version of a website?

  1. Copy the most specific address you have. Use the full page URL when you need one article, product page or document. Use the domain when you want to explore the site’s broader history.
  2. Open the Wayback Machine and paste the address into its search field.
  3. Select Browse History. The history view shows dates on which the archive recorded that URL.
  4. Choose a year and then an available date and time. Open the capture and check that the address, text, images and links are the material you need.

The calendar is a record of captures, not a promise that every day, page or site section exists. A page may have several captures in one month, while another page on the same site has none.

Use the exact URL first

Archives identify pages by URL. Differences such as http versus https, a trailing slash, a language path, uppercase letters, or query parameters can lead to different capture records. Start with the address that appeared in the original link, bookmark or search result. If it fails, try the canonical form shown by the live site and then the domain.

Check more than one capture

Open the nearest capture before and after the date you care about. This helps distinguish a temporary outage from a genuine redesign and can reveal when text, prices, images or navigation changed. Record the capture URL and timestamp if you need to cite the page later.

What to do when the Wayback Machine has no useful copy

Search the page’s assets and alternate URLs

Internet Archive’s help guidance says an image or linked asset can have its own archived URL. Search the direct image, PDF, stylesheet or script address when the page shell loads without the content you need. Also try an older path, a language version, a print URL, or a product URL without tracking parameters.

Try Archive.today

Search Archive.today with the exact page address. Its homepage supports snapshot search and submission. Archive.today describes its copies as text and graphical captures without active page scripts, so an archived copy may preserve the appearance while losing interactive behavior such as menus, forms or logged-in functions.

Interpret an empty result correctly

No result means that the service did not return a capture for the URL you searched. It does not establish that the page never existed. The URL may have been archived under another form, blocked from crawling, or captured only through an embedded asset or a linked page.

How to save the page that exists today

Use Save Page Now in the Wayback Machine when you need to preserve the current page. Internet Archive’s instructions explain that this is a one-time capture of one page. It does not schedule future crawls, save every linked page, or archive a directory or whole site. Submit the page, wait for the save operation to finish, and copy the resulting archive URL.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A saved page is not automatically a complete website. Images, fonts, scripts and other resources may be absent from the archive’s servers. If those resources matter, save their direct URLs separately where the service permits it and keep your own contemporaneous copy for reference.

Why an archived page may look broken

JavaScript-dependent interfaces

Modern pages often build their content after load with JavaScript, call APIs, or require a session. An archive may contain the initial HTML but not the data request or script needed to render the final screen. Try a different capture, a print or reader view, or the page’s underlying image and document URLs. Treat a broken interactive control as evidence of an incomplete capture, not proof that the original page was broken.

Missing resources and changed origins

Archived HTML can point to resources that were never captured or that now resolve differently. A page may therefore show text without its images, use the wrong styles, or redirect links to the live site. Check the archived address bar and inspect individual links before relying on them.

Robots.txt and crawl restrictions

Internet Archive identifies robots.txt rules and JavaScript behavior as factors that can make sites harder to archive. A restriction can affect a whole domain, a path, or particular resources. There is no reliable way to infer the original page’s contents from an absent capture alone.

How to compare snapshots accurately

When both services have a relevant result, compare the same evidence rather than judging which archive “looks better.”

Check How to apply it Why it matters
Exact URL Match protocol, host, path and meaningful query parameters. A different URL can represent a different page or version.
Capture date and time Write down the archive timestamp and your target date or event. Changes between captures can be hours apart.
Core content Verify headings, body text, prices, downloads and legal notices. A visual shell may load even when important content is missing.
Assets Open key images, PDFs and stylesheets through the archived links. Missing assets can change the meaning or appearance.
Behavior Test only the interactions your task requires. Archive.today copies do not retain active scripts; Wayback captures can also lose JavaScript behavior.

Neither service is established here as universally more reliable. Choose the capture that preserves the specific evidence you need and describe its limits in your notes.

Researching a site’s broader history

Start with the domain, then narrow down

A domain search can expose historical homepages and navigation paths. Once you identify the likely section, search each page URL directly. This is more dependable than assuming that a homepage capture contains every article or asset.

Use Site Search for discovery, not full-text verification

Internet Archive describes its Wayback Site Search as finding website homepages based on terms people used to describe them. It is not presented as a general full-text search of every archived page. For a known target, begin with the URL or domain and use ordinary web search, old links and site maps to discover candidate addresses.

Keep an evidence log

  • Original URL and any alternate URL tested.
  • Archive service and permanent capture link.
  • Capture timestamp, including time zone if shown.
  • What loaded successfully and which assets or interactions were missing.
  • Screenshots or downloaded files retained in your own records.

This prevents a later reader from mistaking a partial archived rendering for a complete reproduction.

Or skip the browser setup: capture the current page with ScreenshotNeo

ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server for developers. It does not replace historical archives: the call below captures the page as it is reachable now. It is useful when you need a clean, repeatable reference of the current state before comparing it with an archived capture.

Before capture, ScreenshotNeo can accept cookie or consent banners and remove more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups and chat widgets; each cleanup step can be disabled. Only clean shots are billed. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads and cache hits cost nothing, and response headers report the page verdict and whether it was billed.

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

Python

import requests

r = requests.get(
    "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot",
    params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"},
    timeout=90,
)
r.raise_for_status()
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)

Node.js

const q = new URLSearchParams({
  access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY',
  url: 'https://stripe.com'
});
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);
if (!res.ok) throw new Error(`HTTP ${res.status}`);
const data = Buffer.from(await res.arrayBuffer());
await import('node:fs/promises').then(fs => fs.writeFile('shot.webp', data));

Options useful for an archive comparison

  • Full-page capture with lazy images loaded, or one element selected by CSS.
  • Any viewport, 12 device presets, retina scale, dark mode and transparent backgrounds.
  • Custom CSS and JavaScript, click-before-capture, hidden selectors, and waits for a selector, delay or network idle.
  • Blocking for ads, trackers, requests or resource types; custom headers, cookies, user agent and Authorization.
  • Timezone and geolocation controls so localized pages can be reproduced.
  • PDF output with paper size, margins, landscape mode and page ranges.
  • Image resizing, chosen cache TTL, signed links for public image tags, asynchronous jobs with signed webhooks, bulk capture of up to 100 URLs per call, usage API and OpenAPI specification.

Parameter names used by other screenshot APIs also work, which can simplify a migration. An MCP server exposes take_screenshot, get_page_info and capture_pdf to Claude, Cursor and other MCP clients, allowing an AI agent to collect a current reference without custom browser automation.

Troubleshooting checklist

“Browse History” shows no dates

  • Confirm that you pasted the page URL rather than a search-result redirect.
  • Try the domain, an older path, and the direct URL of an image or PDF.
  • Check Archive.today for an independently submitted copy.

The capture opens but content is missing

  • Try a nearby capture date.
  • Open the missing asset’s URL directly in the archive.
  • Look for a print, AMP or downloadable document version.
  • Record the page as partial if scripts or assets never load.

The archived page redirects to the live site

Use the archive’s own link for each resource, remove unnecessary query parameters, and test another capture. Do not treat live content reached through a redirect as historical evidence.

Save Page Now does not preserve the whole site

That behavior is expected: Save Page Now is a one-time, single-page capture. Submit important linked pages separately and keep your own copies of files that must remain available.

The ScreenshotNeo request returns an error

  • Replace YOUR_API_KEY with a valid access key and URL-encode the target.
  • Allow up to the documented request timeout for slow pages and inspect the response headers for the page verdict and billing status.
  • If the result is blank or blocked by a bot check, treat it as a failed current capture; ScreenshotNeo does not bill those outcomes.

FAQ

Can I see a website exactly as it looked on a particular day?

Only if an archive captured that URL close to the date and preserved the required content and assets. A nearby capture is not proof of the page’s exact state on an uncaptured day.

Does Save Page Now archive future updates automatically?

No. It creates one page capture. Future changes require new saves or ordinary crawler captures.

Are archived pages safe to use as interactive replacements?

No. Archived copies can omit scripts, sessions and external resources. Use them as historical evidence and verify critical claims against additional records.
