Visual Studio builds the project, starts its configured web server, and opens the application URL. Use Ctrl+F5 when you want the site in a browser without attaching the debugger.
View your website with the normal Visual Studio workflow
- Open the solution or project. In Visual Studio, choose File > Open > Project/Solution, then select the solution or web project file. Wait for restore and build tasks to finish.
- Select a launch profile. Use the profile drop-down on the debug toolbar. Typical choices are https, the project name, IIS Express, or a configured local IIS profile. The profile supplies the server and URL.
- Confirm browser launching. Open the project’s Debug properties and make sure Launch browser is enabled if you want Visual Studio to open a browser automatically.
- Start the site. Press F5, click the green Start button, or choose Debug > Start Debugging. Visual Studio builds the project, starts the selected server, and navigates the browser to the profile URL.
- Go to the route you need. For example, append
/Products,/Privacy, or another controller, Razor Page, endpoint, or static-file path to the local URL. - Stop when finished. Press Shift+F5 or choose Debug > Stop Debugging.
For an ASP.NET Core project, static CSS, images, and JavaScript libraries normally belong in wwwroot. That folder is the web-content root; once the application is running, request those files through the route or URL your project defines.
F5, Ctrl+F5, and View in Browser: which command to use?
| Action | Debugger attached? | What opens | Best use |
|---|---|---|---|
| F5 / Start Debugging | Yes | The selected profile’s application URL, usually its startup page | Testing server-side code with breakpoints, stepping, watches, and exception inspection |
| Ctrl+F5 / Start Without Debugging | No | The selected profile’s application URL | Viewing the site as a normal browser session without debugger overhead |
| View in Browser | No debugger is started for that action | The selected renderable file or page | Opening one page directly; it is unavailable for files such as Web.config that do not render as web pages |
In older Visual Studio documentation, View in Browser uses Ctrl+Shift+W. You can also right-click a page in Solution Explorer and choose View in Browser. If the command opens the wrong content, verify whether you selected a page or a non-renderable project file.
Choose the browser Visual Studio uses
Use the debug-toolbar browser selector
The browser control beside the launch profile lists installed browsers and the configured default. Select Microsoft Edge, Chrome, Firefox, or another installed option before pressing F5. The chosen browser is used for the next launch of that profile.

Use Browse With for a particular page
Right-click a web page in Solution Explorer and choose Browse With. Select an installed browser and choose Set as Default if you want that browser to become the default for the website. This is useful when a page behaves differently across rendering engines.
Open several browsers while developing
Browser Link can connect multiple browsers to the running ASP.NET Core application. Its dashboard can refresh connected views and help you compare responsive or cross-browser changes. Start the project, connect the browsers, and use the Browser Link controls to refresh them together.
Why Visual Studio opens a different page or URL
The wrong launch profile is selected
Profiles can point to different servers and ports. An IIS Express profile, a project (Kestrel) profile, and local IIS can therefore open different URLs. Select the intended profile in the toolbar, then inspect its Debug properties before starting again.
The profile URL is different from the one you expected
ASP.NET Core launch profiles are represented in Properties/launchSettings.json. Check the selected profile’s applicationUrl and, where present, its HTTPS and HTTP endpoints. A port change is normal when profiles differ.

Launch browser is disabled
If the server starts but no browser appears, open the project’s Debug settings and enable Launch browser. You can still copy the URL printed in the output or terminal and paste it into a browser manually.

You are running the startup page rather than the current page
Starting the project and opening the current document are separate workflows. F5 and Ctrl+F5 normally launch the profile’s configured application URL. Use View in Browser on the specific page when you need that document instead.
An older ASP.NET project has a separate startup-page setting
Classic ASP.NET website and web application projects can define a startup page independently of the file selected in the editor. Review the project’s Web or Debug properties and choose the desired startup page, or use View in Browser for a one-off page.
Breakpoints and browser navigation
With F5, set a breakpoint in a controller action, Razor Page handler, middleware, or other server-side code. Navigate to the matching route in the browser. When that request reaches the breakpoint, Visual Studio pauses execution so you can inspect variables, the call stack, and the request context. A page that was already cached or a route that does not execute the breakpoint will not pause; refresh or request the correct endpoint after confirming the profile and route.
Static files, routes, and common project layouts
ASP.NET Core
Put public CSS, images, fonts, and client-side JavaScript under wwwroot. Reference them with paths such as /css/site.css or /images/logo.png, subject to the middleware and routing configured by the application. Razor Pages, MVC controllers, minimal APIs, and static files can all use different routes, so use the route mapping in your project rather than assuming the file path is the browser URL.
What a successful launch looks like
- The Visual Studio Output or terminal window reports that the selected server is listening.
- The browser address bar shows the selected profile’s HTTP or HTTPS URL and port.
- The requested page renders, or a clear application error identifies the failing route or dependency.
Troubleshoot a site that will not open
Build errors prevent launch
Symptom: F5 stops at build or shows compile errors. Fix: Open View > Error List, correct errors in the affected project, restore packages if prompted, and build again with Build > Build Solution. Visual Studio cannot serve the new code until the build succeeds.

- Ultra-thin bezels: Maximize your viewing experience with thin bezels.
The port is already in use
Symptom: The server reports that an address or port cannot be bound. Fix: Stop another running instance, close the process holding the port, or change the profile’s URL to an unused port in the Debug settings or launchSettings.json. Then launch the same profile again.
HTTPS shows a certificate warning
Symptom: The local HTTPS address opens a browser warning. Fix: Trust the development certificate using the .NET development-certificate tooling appropriate to your installed SDK, then restart Visual Studio and the browser. If HTTPS is not required for your test, select an HTTP profile when one is provided.
A blank page appears
Symptom: The browser opens but displays no expected content. Fix: Confirm the route, inspect the browser developer console for client-side errors, check that static-file middleware is enabled, and verify that the requested files are actually under wwwroot or another explicitly served location.
404 Not Found
Symptom: The server responds but the route is missing. Fix: Check endpoint, controller, Razor Page, or minimal-API mappings; verify route casing where the host is case-sensitive; and make sure you are using the URL for the selected profile rather than an old port.
The browser never opens
Symptom: The server runs, but Visual Studio does not launch a browser. Fix: Enable Launch browser, check that a browser is installed and selected, and copy the listening URL from the Output window into a browser manually.

Changes are not visible
Symptom: The old page remains after editing. Fix: Save all files, confirm the request is going to the current profile, rebuild if necessary, and hard-refresh the browser. For client assets, inspect the Network panel to see whether a cached stylesheet or script is being used.
View the site without configuring a local browser
Visual Studio is ideal when you need breakpoints, project files, and local server control. If you only need a clean image or PDF of a public URL, a screenshot API avoids setting up a browser session.
Or skip the browser setup
ScreenshotNeo returns a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF from one GET request. Before capture it accepts cookie or consent banners and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each cleanup step can be disabled. Bot checks and CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and response headers identify the page verdict and whether the request was billed. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients.
Every plan includes the capture options developers commonly need: full-page screenshots with lazy images loaded, CSS-selector element capture, dark mode, device presets and custom viewports, retina scale, PDF paper settings and page ranges, custom CSS and JavaScript, pre-capture clicks, hidden selectors, waits for selectors, delays or network idle, request and resource blocking, headers, cookies, user agents, Authorization, timezone, geolocation, transparent backgrounds, resizing, configurable-TTL caching, signed image links, asynchronous jobs with signed webhooks, bulk capture of up to 100 URLs per call, a usage API, and an OpenAPI specification. Parameter names used by other screenshot APIs are accepted to ease migration.
The Free plan includes 1,000 shots per month with no card. Paid plans are Starter $5 for 3,000, Growth $15 for 15,000, Pro $39 for 60,000, Scale $99 for 250,000, and Business $249 for 1,000,000; yearly billing gives two months free.
