Depending on the provider and route, you may also need a U.S. phone number and a smartphone, tablet, or computer with a camera.
VA describes verification as a one-time process in most cases, although account-access problems or future security checks can require additional steps. The process often takes about 10 minutes, according to VA guidance; that is an operational estimate, not a guaranteed completion time.

Why VA requires identity verification
Identity verification connects your online sign-in account to you before VA displays personal information, benefits records, health-care details, or application status. VA says the purpose is to protect people from scammers who might create an account in someone else’s name and access that person’s information and benefits.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsThe account provider is responsible for checking your identity. VA’s current account-creation choices are ID.me, Login.gov, and CLEAR. You choose one of those accounts to sign in to VA websites and apps; the choice does not change whether you qualify for VA benefits or health care.

Verification is generally a one-time step for the account. You may still be asked to authenticate again if you lose access to MFA, change account details, trigger a security review, or use a recovery route. Keep your provider credentials and recovery information available after you finish.
What to prepare before you begin
Gather these items before opening the verification screen. The exact combination depends on the provider, your location, and whether you use self-service, video, or an in-person route.
- An email address and password for your chosen provider account.
- Your Social Security number, when the provider requires one.
- A valid, unexpired government identity document accepted by that provider.
- Access to your MFA method, such as an authenticator, text message, or another method shown during sign-in.
- A camera-capable smartphone, tablet, or computer if the flow asks for a document image, selfie, or live video.
- A reliable internet connection and the ability to follow the provider’s consent and identity questions.
Use the provider’s current instructions at the moment you start. Accepted documents, phone rules, and appointment options can change, and a document accepted by one provider may not be accepted by another.

Choose the account and verification route
VA supports three provider accounts. The practical differences are the documents, phone and camera requirements, and the assisted options available if self-service fails.
| Provider | Typical preparation | Other routes and cautions |
|---|---|---|
| ID.me | Provider account email and password, MFA, Social Security number, an accepted identity document, and a smartphone camera or internet-connected computer. Self-service uses certain valid, unexpired U.S. IDs. | A video-call review and appointments at participating UPS Store locations may be available. People outside the United States can select the applicable option and verify with an ID.me representative by video call. |
| Login.gov | Account email and password; a valid driver’s license, state-issued ID, or U.S. passport book; Social Security number; a U.S. phone number; a camera-capable smartphone or tablet; and MFA access. | Participating USPS locations offer an in-person route. VA says a letter may be possible for someone without a U.S. phone number. Save the Login.gov personal key: if you reset a password without it, you may have to verify your identity again. |
| CLEAR | A smartphone with a front-facing camera and current software, Social Security number, and a valid, unexpired government ID. | VA’s general guidance lists CLEAR as an option for people living outside the United States. Follow the current CLEAR prompts because its document and device rules can change. |
Do not choose a provider because someone claims it is always faster or easier. Your best route depends on the ID you possess, whether your phone number is eligible, your location, and which recovery options you can use later.

Step-by-step: complete verification through VA.gov
- Open VA.gov directly. Type the address yourself or use a trusted bookmark. Avoid starting from an unsolicited email, text message, or social-media link that asks for your Social Security number or an ID image.
- Choose an account provider. Select ID.me, Login.gov, or CLEAR. Use an existing account if you have one, or create a new account with an email address you control. VA recommends using a unique email and setting up the provider’s MFA.
- Finish account security setup. Confirm your email, create the password, and enroll in the MFA method requested by the provider. Keep recovery codes, keys, or other instructions in a secure place. Login.gov users should save the personal key before completing the process.
- Sign in to VA.gov. After authentication, open My VA. Look for the identity-verification alert or prompt and select the option to continue.
- Accept the handoff to the provider. VA may send you back through the provider’s sign-in screen. Complete any requested re-authentication rather than opening a second, unverified account.
- Select the available verification method. Depending on the provider, this may be self-service document and facial checks, a live video call, or an in-person appointment. Review the document list before taking photographs.
- Submit identity and consent information. Enter details exactly as they appear on your document. Follow instructions for lighting, camera position, document edges, and any live representative questions. Do not upload an altered, expired, or borrowed document.
- Complete the provider’s final security step. Approve MFA, record any recovery key, and finish the confirmation screen. A Login.gov personal key is especially important because losing it can force another identity check after a password reset.
- Return to VA.gov. Confirm that My VA shows the account as verified, then continue your benefits application or other task. If the status does not update, use the provider’s account support before creating another account.
Button names and screen layouts can change. Follow the live instructions shown by VA.gov and the provider rather than relying on an old screenshot or a third-party walkthrough.
Provider-specific details
ID.me
ID.me generally asks for your account email and password, MFA, Social Security number, an accepted identity document, and a camera-capable device or computer with internet access. Its self-service path accepts certain valid, unexpired U.S. IDs. If automated checks cannot finish, the account may present a video-call option or an appointment at a participating UPS Store location.
People outside the United States can select the relevant international option. VA’s overview describes an ID.me representative reviewing identity by video call for that route. Appointment availability and the documents accepted in a particular case are controlled by ID.me’s current process.
Login.gov
Login.gov’s online route uses a valid driver’s license, state-issued ID, or U.S. passport book, along with your Social Security number, a U.S. phone number, a camera-capable smartphone or tablet, and MFA access. The provider may ask you to photograph the document and complete a face or liveness check.
If online verification is not workable, Login.gov may offer verification at a participating USPS location. VA also says a letter option may be available for someone who lacks a U.S. phone number. Save the personal key displayed during setup. A password reset without that key can require you to prove your identity again.

CLEAR
CLEAR’s VA sign-in route calls for a smartphone with a front-facing camera and updated software, your Social Security number, and a valid, unexpired government ID. VA’s general guidance includes CLEAR for people living outside the United States. Because device and document prompts can change, review the current instructions in the CLEAR flow before starting.
Documents, phone numbers, and location issues
If you do not have a U.S. Social Security number
VA’s general identity-verification guidance says people without a U.S. Social Security number need ID.me and must show a valid U.S. passport as one of their identity documents. Provider availability and eligibility language can change, so follow the live choice displayed by VA.gov rather than assuming every provider will work.
If you live outside the United States
VA says people outside the United States can use ID.me or CLEAR. ID.me’s international path may use a video call with a representative. The documents, appointment times, and connection requirements depend on the provider’s current rules and your location.
If your phone plan is not in your name
VA’s dated 2025 guidance notes that ID.me may be required for some people whose phone plan is not in their name and who want to complete the full process online. Treat that statement as contextual guidance, not a permanent rule. Check the current provider choices and prompts at VA.gov.
If you do not have a camera-capable device
Self-service routes may require a camera to photograph an ID or complete a facial check. Try a supported smartphone, tablet, or computer that you control. If that is not possible, use an offered video or in-person route instead of sending ID images to an unofficial helper.

What to do when online verification fails
- Check the basics. Make sure the ID is current, unexpired, readable, and accepted by the selected provider. Confirm that the name and other details you enter match the document.
- Use the MFA method tied to the same account. A code or approval for a different account will not complete this verification. Check your authenticator, phone, or other enrolled method.
- Retry under better capture conditions. Use even lighting, remove glare, place the entire document inside the camera frame, and follow any movement or liveness instructions. Keep the app or browser updated.
- Choose assisted verification when offered. ID.me may provide a video call or participating UPS Store appointment. Login.gov may provide a participating USPS appointment. Exact locations, schedules, and eligibility are subject to the provider’s current process.
- Recover the account through the provider. Password, MFA, and personal-key problems belong to ID.me, Login.gov, or CLEAR support. VA contact-center staff cannot reset ID.me or Login.gov passwords.
- Use a non-online VA channel if necessary. VA says you can manage benefits and health care by phone, mail, or in person when online access is not workable. Use the VA contact directory or the relevant VA office for benefit-specific assistance.
Do not create multiple provider accounts to get around a failed check. Multiple accounts can make it harder to identify which credentials are connected to your VA information and may trigger additional security review.
In-person and video alternatives
Login.gov at participating USPS locations
When Login.gov offers in-person verification, select that route in the provider flow and follow its instructions for the participating USPS location, appointment or walk-in rules, and required documents. Availability is not universal, and the provider may still require account email, MFA, or other information before issuing a completion notice.
ID.me video call or participating UPS Store appointment
ID.me can offer a live representative by video call and may list appointments at participating UPS Store locations. Have the original accepted document available and use only the appointment details shown inside the authenticated provider flow. Do not email a copy of your ID to an individual who contacts you unexpectedly.
When no alternative is shown
Provider routes vary by location, document, and account status. If no assisted option appears, contact the provider through its official support process. For the underlying VA benefit, use phone, mail, or an in-person VA office rather than abandoning the application.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Security practices that prevent identity theft
Begin at VA.gov, not from a message demanding immediate verification. Check the address bar before entering an SSN, password, MFA code, or document image. VA and its providers will present verification inside the authenticated flow; an unsolicited caller or message asking you to send those details is a warning sign.
Best Value
- Never post your Social Security number, identity-document photo, MFA code, or personal key in a comment, forum, or social-media message.
- Do not allow an unverified helper to create an account with an email address or phone number you cannot access.
- Use a unique password and keep MFA enabled.
- Store recovery keys offline or in a secure password manager, not in a public note or screenshot shared with others.
- Sign out on shared computers and avoid saving credentials in a public browser.
If you suspect someone has created an account in your name, stop the interaction, change the affected provider password from its official site, and contact that provider’s support. Use VA’s contact directory for benefit-specific concerns.
Does verification affect eligibility?
No. The sign-in provider is an access and security mechanism, not a benefits decision-maker. Choosing ID.me, Login.gov, or CLEAR does not change eligibility for disability compensation, health care, education, pensions, or other VA programs. A person who does not use an online account can still manage benefits through VA by phone, mail, or in person.
How long it takes and what can change
VA says identity verification often takes about 10 minutes. That estimate assumes you have the required document, account access, MFA, and a supported device; a video appointment, USPS visit, document problem, or account recovery can take longer.
Provider interfaces, accepted-document lists, phone requirements, and appointment availability are change-sensitive. Before applying, review the current VA account-creation and identity-verification instructions and the provider’s own prompts. Use the options shown for your location and account on the day you apply.
