Check the provider in SEBI’s official Recognised Intermediaries registry, choose the category that matches the service offered, and compare the record’s exact registered name and registration number. Then independently verify that the website, email, phone number, or social account contacting you belongs to that listed entity. A registry match confirms a record exists; it does not authenticate every person or offer using the same name.

How to check a SEBI registration

  1. Open SEBI’s Recognised Intermediaries page. Use the category for the service the person or firm says it provides; the registry lists different intermediary categories separately.
  2. Select the relevant category. For someone claiming to be an Investment Adviser, choose Investment Adviser, then search using the exact name or trade name, or the registration number. The registry also provides fields for contact person, email, and location.
  3. Compare the result with the provider’s claim. Match the registered name and registration number, and check the contact, address, contact-person, and validity information shown. Available fields can vary by record.
  4. Separately check that the contact channel you are using belongs to the listed entity. Compare the website, email address, phone number, or social-media account with the registry details; do not rely on a logo, badge, certificate image, or similar-sounding name.

SEBI’s 2025 Investment Adviser FAQ identifies the Recognised Intermediaries list as the place to check adviser registration status and contact details. SEBI Investor Support likewise advises investors to “Check Registration Status of Market Intermediary before investing” (Investor Support).

Choose the category that fits the service

SEBI’s directory covers multiple kinds of intermediaries, including Investment Advisers, stock brokers, portfolio managers, and research analysts. A listing under one category does not establish that the provider is registered for a different role. Search the category relevant to the activity being offered, rather than treating any SEBI listing as general approval for all services.

What a registry result can—and cannot—confirm

A matching record is evidence that an entry appears in the selected SEBI directory. It is not, by itself, proof that the person who contacted you controls the listed firm’s website, account, or phone number; that a particular investment offer is genuine; or that an investment will perform well.

This distinction matters because SEBI’s 2026 order in the matter of Mr. Yash Garg, Proprietor of Yash Trading Academy described social-media channels using a name similar to a registered entity but found those channels were unrelated to it. Treat a name-only match as insufficient to authenticate the communication.

If you cannot find an exact match

  • Check the spelling, trade name, registration number, and selected intermediary category.
  • Do not treat the claimed registration as verified while the mismatch remains unresolved. Ask the provider to clarify, then check the official listing yourself rather than relying on screenshots or copied certificates.
  • For help, use SEBI’s current Investor Support guidance. The appropriate process for reporting a suspected impersonation may depend on the circumstances.

Why the registry should be checked live

SEBI’s registry search reported 1,049 Investment Advisers on October 6, 2026. That is a dated snapshot, not a permanent count; records and listings can change. Check the live directory when you are deciding whether to engage with a provider.

SEBI Act section 12(1), as reproduced in a SEBI order, says that specified securities-market intermediaries—including investment advisers—may deal in securities only under and in accordance with a registration certificate and applicable conditions (SEBI order reproducing section 12(1)). This statutory passage is not a complete account of every exemption or regulatory condition, so use the official directory to verify the relevant intermediary record.
