Before depositing money, check the exchange in the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) Nigeria’s official Find a Registered Operator search and on the SEC FinPort registered-operator page. Search both the platform’s trading name and its legal company name. Confirm that the record identifies the same entity, covers the digital-asset service you intend to use, and shows a current account status. Treat an Accelerated Regulatory Incubation Programme (ARIP) admission or Approval-in-Principle (AIP) as conditional programme clearance, not as a final licence. If the identity, service, or status is unclear, stop and ask the SEC through the operator-inquiry contact published on FinPort before sending funds.
What “licensed” or “approved” means for a Nigerian crypto exchange
For a crypto exchange serving people in Nigeria, the relevant capital-market check is the SEC Nigeria’s operator record. The Commission’s Find a Registered Operator page says: “All Operators in Nigeria are required to register with the SEC before commencing operation.” That statement makes the SEC registry the starting point for verifying an exchange’s regulatory status; an exchange’s app, social-media account, advertising, physical office, or self-described licence is not a substitute for the official record.

Registration is not a single yes-or-no label that can be inferred from a company name. The SEC record should be read as an entry for a particular legal entity, a recorded capital-market function, and an account status. A company might appear in the registry for a function that does not authorize it to run the exchange service you are considering. A brand may also be operated by a different company from the one named in its advertisements. Verification therefore requires matching the entity, service, and status together.

An AIP allows operation only within the programme’s defined scope and conditions. It is not a final licence and remains conditional on continuing compliance with regulatory, operational, and supervisory obligations. Report the status exactly as the SEC displays it rather than shortening “AIP” or “ARIP participant” to “fully licensed.”

Where to perform the check
SEC Find a Registered Operator
Use the SEC Nigeria Find a Registered Operator search before you open an account or make a deposit. The SEC describes this service as a way to verify operators before commencement and provides operator account status and registration information. Use the search result itself, not a screenshot supplied by the exchange, because the live record can change.
SEC FinPort registered-operator page
FinPort is the SEC’s fintech-facing information page and includes a registered-operator listing. It is useful for confirming the legal name, trading name, category, and other details shown for digital-asset businesses. Compare the FinPort entry with the result in the SEC operator search. If the two records appear inconsistent, do not choose the more favorable interpretation; ask the SEC to clarify.
The official pages are the appropriate sources for this question. A regulator logo in an exchange’s footer, a certificate image, a statement from an influencer, or a listing in an unrelated directory does not establish SEC registration.

Step-by-step: verify an exchange before depositing
- Write down every name the platform uses. Record the trading brand shown in the app and website, the legal company name in its terms or corporate disclosure, and any parent or affiliate name shown during onboarding. Preserve the spelling, punctuation, and corporate suffixes. A close name is not necessarily the same company.
- Open the SEC operator search or FinPort list. Start with the SEC’s official operator-verification tools. Search the public-facing brand, then repeat the search with the legal entity name. If the search has filters, use the digital-asset or relevant capital-market category, but do not assume a category filter proves the service is authorized.
- Match the legal entity. Check whether the result names the same company that contracts with you, holds your account, or appears in the platform’s terms. If the platform says one company operates the app while the SEC record names another, obtain a clear explanation before proceeding. A brand match alone is insufficient.
- Read the recorded function. Identify the exact function attached to the operator record. Registration for a different capital-market activity should not automatically be described as permission to operate a crypto exchange, custody customer assets, facilitate trading, or solicit investment funds. The offered service must fit the function shown by the SEC.
- Read account status and registration details. Note whether the entry is active, conditional, suspended, withdrawn, or otherwise qualified, using the wording displayed in the current record. Save the date you checked and the exact status text. Do not convert a status such as “admitted,” “incubation,” or “Approval-in-Principle” into “licensed.”
- Check whether the record is an ARIP or AIP entry. An ARIP participant is in a controlled assessment programme. An AIP is conditional permission within the approved scope; the SEC says it is not a final licence. Record the programme status precisely and read any scope or conditions shown by the Commission.
- Resolve discrepancies with the SEC. If no result appears, the names do not match, the function is unclear, or the status is ambiguous, pause the transaction. FinPort lists [email protected] for questions about an existing operator’s status. Describe the brand, legal entity, service, and the wording you found, and wait for a clear response before depositing.
- Recheck immediately before a material transaction. Operator records and programme statuses can change. A dated announcement or an old screenshot proves only what was published at that time. Perform the live search again on the day you plan to fund the account, especially after a long period of inactivity or a change in the platform’s legal terms.
How to interpret the SEC record
| Evidence you find | What it establishes | What it does not establish | What to do |
|---|---|---|---|
| Exact legal entity in the SEC operator search, with a relevant digital-asset function and current status | The SEC has a recorded operator entry for that entity and function at the time you checked. | That every product, affiliate, asset, or service promoted by the brand is covered. | Match the specific service and keep a dated record of the entry. |
| Trading brand appears, but the legal company is missing or different | Only that a similar public name appears somewhere, if at all. | That the brand you plan to use is operated by the listed company. | Stop and obtain entity confirmation from the SEC and the platform. |
| Company is listed for another capital-market function | The company may have registration for the function displayed. | Authorization to run a crypto exchange or provide every digital-asset service. | Ask whether the recorded function covers the service you intend to use. |
| ARIP participant or AIP entry | The entity is in a controlled onboarding or conditional approval process, subject to scope and compliance. | A final, unconditional licence. | Use the SEC’s exact status wording and read the applicable conditions. |
| No clear current record | Nothing in the public search that resolves the identity and service. | That the exchange is safe, foreign-licensed, or exempt. | Do not deposit until the SEC resolves the question. |
Use all four evidence axes together: legal-entity and brand match, SEC-listed function, current account status and registration information, and whether the evidence is final registration or only ARIP/AIP admission. A platform that passes only one axis has not completed the verification.
Registration versus ARIP and Approval-in-Principle
What ARIP is
ARIP is an SEC programme for controlled onboarding and assessment of eligible digital-asset businesses. It allows the Commission to supervise an entity while it demonstrates that its systems, controls, operations, and compliance arrangements meet applicable requirements. Participation is therefore a regulatory stage, not a blanket endorsement of every product or marketing statement made by the business.
What AIP is
An Approval-in-Principle is conditional. The SEC’s July 2026 ARIP announcement expressly states: “Please Note that it is not a final licence and remains conditional on the entity’s continued compliance with all applicable regulatory, operational, and supervisory obligations.” An AIP should be described as an AIP, with its date and scope, rather than as a completed licence. If the live operator record later changes, the current record controls.

How to write or understand a status accurately
- Say “listed as an ARIP participant” when the SEC identifies the entity in the programme.
- Say “granted Approval-in-Principle” only when the SEC uses that status, and add that it is conditional and not a final licence.
- Say “registered” only when the current SEC operator record shows the relevant registration and function.
- Do not infer a present status from a dated announcement without checking the live operator search.
Dated examples: why status must be checked again
The SEC’s public announcements illustrate the difference between a dated programme announcement and a current operator record. They should not be treated as permanent proof that a particular exchange is licensed today.
| SEC material and date | Entities named | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| FinPort registered-operator page, as listed by the SEC | Busha Digital Limited, trading as Busha; Quidax Technologies Limited, trading as Quidax | The page identifies these companies as digital-asset exchanges among ARIP participants. Confirm their current record and scope before describing either as presently licensed. |
| SEC announcement, July 2026 | GIGX Technologies; KuCoin Nigeria Limited | The announcement says the entities were cleared for ARIP admission and expected to receive AIP. That dated statement is not a final licence and must be rechecked in the live registry. |
| SEC announcement, August 2026 | Pisi Payments Solution Limited; BC Access (Nigeria) Limited; Yellow Card (YC) Financial Limited | The announcement names them in connection with ARIP. It does not remove the need to verify current status, legal identity, function, and conditions. |
The dates matter because regulatory records are time-sensitive. If an article, advertisement, or exchange support agent cites one of these announcements, compare it with the current SEC entry rather than accepting the older statement as conclusive.

Guaranteed or unusually high returns
Promised returns are marketing claims, not evidence of registration. A platform can display attractive yields, referral bonuses, or “risk-free” language without holding the SEC status needed for the activity it promotes. Treat guaranteed returns as a separate investment-risk warning and verify the operator independently.

Regulator logos and certificates
A logo, certificate image, or a sentence saying “SEC approved” can be copied, outdated, or limited to a different legal entity or function. The decisive check is the SEC’s own current record, including the account status and recorded service.
Social-media popularity and testimonials
Large follower counts, endorsements, news coverage, and successful withdrawals reported by other users do not establish authorization. They also do not show that customer funds are protected if the platform stops processing withdrawals.
Foreign registration claims
An exchange may mention incorporation or licensing in another country. That information does not answer whether the Nigerian-facing service is registered with SEC Nigeria. Check the Nigerian operator record for the entity and service you will use.

CBEX: a concrete SEC warning
In a notice dated April 17, 2025, the SEC said CBEX, also identified with ST Technologies International Ltd and the names Smart Treasure and Super Technology, had not been registered by the Commission to operate as a Digital Assets Exchange or solicit investments in Nigeria’s capital market. The notice referred to unrealistic guaranteed-return promotions and failed withdrawal requests, and directed prospective investors to verify platforms through the SEC’s official channels.
This example shows why the verification sequence matters. A platform may have a polished interface, active promoters, and a recognizable brand while lacking the relevant SEC registration. The lesson is not that every unlisted platform has committed the same conduct; it is that unverified claims and promised returns cannot replace a current regulator record.
A May 2026 SEC notice likewise reminded the public that entities must be registered by the Commission to promote investment services, provide investment advice, or solicit funds from the public in the Nigerian capital market. It advised checking platforms offering investment opportunities on the Commission’s official portals before transacting.
What to do when the result is missing or ambiguous
- Do not fund the account while the question is open. A pending bank transfer, crypto deposit, or card payment can be difficult to reverse.
- Capture the exact discrepancy. Save the platform’s legal terms, the name shown at checkout, the SEC search result, and the date and time. Avoid relying on memory or a cropped screenshot.
- Ask the platform for its legal explanation. Request the complete corporate name, the relationship between that company and the trading brand, and the SEC record it says covers the service. Treat the response as information to verify, not as proof.
- Contact SEC through the published FinPort inquiry route. Use [email protected] for an existing operator-status question. Include the brand, legal name, website or app description, proposed service, and the exact SEC entry you found.
- Wait for a clear, service-specific answer. Do not proceed based on a generic statement that the company is “regulated,” “in process,” or “approved somewhere.” The answer must resolve the Nigerian entity, function, and current status.
How often to repeat the check
Repeat verification whenever you open an account, before a substantial deposit, after a change to the platform’s legal terms, and after a long gap between transactions. Recheck after hearing that an operator has joined or left ARIP, received an AIP, changed its corporate name, or moved services to an affiliate. Keep a dated note of the result because a registry entry can be amended, suspended, or otherwise qualified after your first search.
When explaining an exchange to another person, include the date checked and the status wording from the SEC. “The SEC record I viewed on 17 October 2026 showed [status] for [legal entity]” is more precise than an undated statement that the exchange is licensed. Do not turn an old announcement into a current claim.
Five-minute pre-deposit checklist
- Have I searched both the trading brand and the complete legal company name?
- Does the SEC entry identify the same entity that will hold my account or process my transaction?
- Does the recorded function cover the exchange or digital-asset service I plan to use?
- What exact account status does the live SEC record display?
- Is the evidence final registration, or only ARIP participation or conditional AIP?
- Did I record the date and preserve the SEC result?
- Are any promised returns, withdrawal claims, or promotional statements being used instead of regulatory evidence?
- If anything is unclear, have I paused and contacted [email protected] before depositing?
Bottom line
Verify a Nigerian crypto exchange in the SEC’s live Find a Registered Operator search and FinPort listing, matching both its brand and legal entity to the relevant recorded function and current status. Treat ARIP admission and AIP as conditional programme stages, not final licences. If the record does not clearly cover the service and company you intend to use, do not deposit until SEC Nigeria has resolved the discrepancy.
