To verify an image or video, do not rely on a single “AI detector” or a file label. Preserve the best available copy, trace earlier appearances, inspect original-file metadata, check Content Credentials and supported watermarks, then corroborate the time, place, event and caption with independent evidence. Each step answers a different question, and none by itself proves that a depicted scene is truthful.
What “provenance” can—and cannot—tell you
Provenance is the record of where a media file came from and what happened to it. For a photo or video found online, that record may include an original publisher, upload dates, editing software, camera metadata, signed Content Credentials or an embedded watermark. Provenance evidence is valuable, but it is not the same as proof that the event shown really happened or that a post’s caption is accurate.

Keep three questions separate throughout your investigation:
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minutePC Slower Than It Used to Be?

- Generation and editing: Is there a supported signal that the file was created or altered by a particular tool or model?
- Claim accuracy: Does independent evidence support the stated time, place, people and event?
Reverse search and metadata mainly help with the first question. Content Credentials and provider-specific watermark checks address file history or generation within their technical coverage. Independent reporting and physical-world clues are needed for the third question.

Use a layered verification workflow
The following sequence is designed for a social-media post, article, message attachment or video clip. Start with the strongest copy you can obtain and preserve what you observed before the post changes or disappears.
1. Preserve the best available copy and the claim
Download the original file when the platform offers an unmodified download, or ask the sender for the camera original. Record the page or account, displayed publication time, caption, accompanying text, and the exact claim being made. Keep the downloaded file unchanged and work on a duplicate for analysis.
A screenshot is a new file. It may have a different creation time, stripped metadata and no file-bound credential. A re-encoded social-media copy can also lose information that was present in the camera original. If you cannot obtain the original, note that limitation rather than treating the repost as equivalent evidence.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →- Preserve the file’s extension and, where practical, calculate a cryptographic hash so you can distinguish your copy from later downloads.
- Save the source page as a PDF or screenshot for your records, while recognizing that the capture documents what was displayed, not what the camera recorded.
- Write down the uploader’s username, profile history and any stated location or date before the post is edited.
2. Search for earlier appearances
Run a reverse image search on the complete image. If the result set is noisy, search distinctive crops such as a sign, landmark, uniform, vehicle or unusual background detail. Search several representative frames for a video: pause at clear moments, export frames as still images and submit them separately.
Compare each match’s upload date, caption and publisher. A result can show that the same pixels appeared earlier under a different description, but search ranking is not a reliable chronology. Open the underlying pages, check their dates directly and identify the earliest accessible source with a credible connection to the event.
Reverse search has incomplete index coverage. A lack of matches means only that the services searched did not find an indexed copy; it does not establish that the file is original, private or authentic.

3. Inspect metadata from the original file
On a camera original, inspect EXIF and other embedded fields for a camera or phone model, capture date, lens, exposure settings, orientation and software history. These details can reveal whether a file appears to have passed through an editor or whether its stated timeline is internally inconsistent.
Treat every field as a clue, not independent proof. Metadata can be edited, copied from another file or removed during messaging, export, conversion and platform processing. A camera date can be wrong because the device clock was wrong, and a software field can reflect a routine resize rather than deceptive manipulation.
Google’s guidance specifically distinguishes the original file from a screenshot when discussing metadata. If all you have is a screenshot or a downloaded social-media derivative, state that the original metadata was unavailable.
4. Check Content Credentials and C2PA history
Content Credentials are signed provenance records based on the Coalition for Content Provenance and Authenticity (C2PA) standard. When a compatible camera, application or publishing service creates or updates a credential, it can record the signer, tools used, origin assertions and a sequence of edits. A compatible viewer can display the history and its validation state.
Open the provenance panel in the viewer or application you are using and read the details rather than looking only for a green check mark. A validated credential supports the claim that the listed signer made the listed assertion about that file. It does not prove that the depicted event occurred, that the signer is trustworthy, or that a social-media caption is correct.

Interpret status messages precisely:
- Validated: The signature and recorded history passed the viewer’s checks for that file.
- Incorrectly modified: The file changed without the corresponding credential update. This is a warning about the recorded chain, not automatic proof that the scene is fabricated.
- Unsupported or unrecognized: The viewer could not process the format, signer or credential. Compatibility limits and malformed data are possible explanations.
- No credentials: No supported record was found. The creator may not have used a participating tool, or sharing and conversion may have removed it.
5. Check supported watermarks separately
Some generation systems embed a watermark in image pixels, video frames or audio instead of relying only on attached metadata. Google describes SynthID as an invisible watermark and says supported verification is performed by Google’s systems. A positive result means that the system found and validated its own supported signal in media it can analyze.
Watermark checks are provider-specific, not universal AI detectors. A negative result does not rule out content made by another provider, an unsupported model, a tool that did not apply a watermark, or a signal degraded by cropping, compression, noise, re-recording or heavy editing. OpenAI likewise says its checker looks for supported OpenAI signals and is not a general-purpose AI detector.
6. Corroborate the depicted context
Finally, test the claim against evidence outside the file. Compare the uploader’s history, publication timing and stated location with independent reports, official records, local imagery and eyewitness material. Examine visible landmarks, road signs, language, weather, shadows, architecture and clothing. For a video, check whether audio, lip movement and ambient conditions fit the claimed place and date.
Use multiple reliable sources where the stakes are high. Provenance records document file history; contextual corroboration determines whether the media supports the claim being made.
What each method establishes
| Method | What it can help establish | Main limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Reverse image or frame search | Similar or earlier online appearances and possible original publishers. | Index coverage is incomplete; dates and captions must be checked on the underlying source. |
| Original-file metadata | Embedded camera, date, settings and software details when present. | Fields may be missing, altered or stripped; a screenshot is not the original. |
| C2PA Content Credentials | Signed origin and edit-history assertions for compatible files and tools. | Adoption and compatibility are incomplete; credentials do not establish truth or context. |
| Embedded watermark verification | Presence of a supported provider or model signal that may survive some transformations. | Each checker covers specific signals; a negative result cannot exclude other systems or lost signals. |
| Independent corroboration | Whether the caption’s time, place and event are supported by other evidence. | Requires judgment and several reliable sources; it is not supplied by a file credential alone. |
How to interpret common outcomes
Earlier image found with a different event
This is strong evidence of miscaptioning or recycling. Preserve the earlier page, compare distinctive details pixel by pixel and report both dates and captions. Do not assume the earlier page is automatically the first-ever publication; describe it as the earliest accessible source you verified.
Original metadata is present but the caption conflicts with it
A capture date or GPS field can expose a contradiction, but metadata itself may be wrong or edited. Seek independent confirmation and explain the conflict instead of declaring the file fake solely on that basis.

Validated credentials show an AI edit
The credential supports the recorded claim that a compatible tool generated or edited part of the file. It does not tell you whether the resulting scene is being presented honestly. Identify which operation is recorded—generation, object removal, compositing or a routine export—and compare that history with the caption.
No credentials or watermark are found
Report the result narrowly: no supported signal was detected in the copy tested. Sharing, screenshots, conversion and unsupported tools can remove or bypass signals, so absence is inconclusive.
The viewer reports an error
“Incorrectly modified” indicates a broken recorded chain. “Unsupported” or “unrecognized” can indicate a format, signer or compatibility problem. Retest with the original download, a current compatible viewer and a copy that has not been recompressed. Do not convert an error into a blanket authenticity verdict.

Google Photos and Gemini features
Google’s help materials suggest asking Search questions such as “Is this made with AI?” or “Is this AI generated?” Those prompts can help investigate an image’s origin, but “AI-generated?” and “authentic?” are different questions. A generated image can depict a real place inaccurately, while a camera photo can be misleadingly captioned.
The “How this was made” panel appears on supported Android and iOS versions when compatible credentials exist. Google says the panel is not available for every item and is not available in Google Photos on the web. Feature availability and supported formats can change, so check the current help documentation for the device and application version you are using.
Social platforms and messaging apps
Many services resize, transcode or strip metadata. A video downloaded from a post may therefore have no relationship to the original encoding, even when its visible frames are unchanged. Platform timestamps can also represent repost time, not capture time. Preserve the displayed post information separately from file metadata.
Best Value
Video-specific handling
Choose frames that contain stable, distinctive details and search several points in the timeline. A single opening frame may be an inserted stock image or an unrelated thumbnail. Compare cuts, overlays, subtitles and audio separately; a genuine clip can be paired with false text or a replacement soundtrack.
Practical checks for difficult cases
When a clip is cropped or low resolution
- Search multiple crops and frames rather than enlarging one blurry still and treating generated detail as evidence.
- Look for logos, road layouts, distinctive buildings, uniforms and language that survive compression.
- Compare motion and lighting across adjacent frames; discontinuities can indicate an edit, but normal cuts can produce the same appearance.
When dates disagree
- Separate capture date, file-creation date, upload date, repost date and the date displayed by a search result.
- Check time zones and device-clock settings before concluding that a timeline is impossible.
- Use independent event records to decide which date is relevant to the claim.
When a source is anonymous
An anonymous uploader is not automatically deceptive, and a named account is not automatically reliable. Evaluate the account’s previous posts, corrections, access to the scene and consistency with independent evidence. Attribute the media precisely and avoid upgrading an unverified account into an eyewitness source.
When privacy or safety is at risk
Do not publish original files containing faces, location coordinates, private messages or identifying metadata unless disclosure is justified and lawful. Create a redacted working copy, retain the original securely and document who had access. Provenance analysis should not expose a vulnerable person merely to establish a point that can be shown another way.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsA concise decision framework
Use the following labels in your notes and final explanation:
- Documented file history: State whether an earlier source, metadata record or validated credential was found, and identify its scope.
- Generation or editing signal: State whether a supported watermark or credential indicates a tool or model, naming the provider and signal type.
- Context supported, contradicted or unresolved: State what independent evidence says about the event, place, time and caption.
- Confidence and limits: List missing originals, unavailable records, incompatible formats and other reasons the result could change.
This wording is more accurate than a single “real” or “fake” label. For example: “The earliest accessible copy predates the post by two years and shows a different caption. No supported credential was available in the downloaded file. The current claim is therefore contradicted by the source history, while the original capture method remains unverified.”
Verification checklist
- Did you save the best available original and record where you found it?
- Did you preserve the exact caption, account and displayed publication date?
- Did you search the full image, distinctive crops and several video frames?
- Did you verify dates and captions on the underlying pages rather than relying on search ranking?
- Did you inspect metadata only from the original file and treat it as a clue?
- Did you check a compatible C2PA viewer and read the validation status?
- Did you run any provider-specific watermark check separately from the credential check?
- Did you test the claimed time, place and event against independent evidence?
- Did you distinguish file history, generation or editing, and factual context in your conclusion?
- Did you record what could not be checked because of missing files, compatibility or privacy limits?
What a provenance result should look like in a report
A useful report names the tested file, source and date; describes each method used; records positive and negative findings with their scope; and ends with a qualified conclusion. Avoid phrases such as “the internet proved it fake” or “no watermark means human-made.” Instead, explain exactly what the evidence supports.
Google Photos Help summarizes the limitation this way: “Content Credentials don’t tell you if a photo or video is real or fake, but you can use the information with the photo or video’s content to make informed decisions.” OpenAI’s Help Center makes a similar point about a detected signal: “The tool does not confirm that the content is accurate, unedited, legally owned, or presented in the correct context.” Those statements describe why provenance is one layer of verification rather than a final verdict.
Recommended Free Tools
Bottom line: combine history, signals and context
The most defensible verification combines an earlier-source search, original-file inspection, signed credentials or supported watermark checks, and independent corroboration. A positive technical signal is meaningful only within the system that issued it; a missing signal is inconclusive. Keep the three judgments separate—what happened to the file, whether a supported system generated or edited it, and whether the caption is true—and report the limits alongside the result.
