How to Verify the Integrity and Creation Time of Archived Captures

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Short answer: identify the exact archived URL and capture, preserve its CDX index record, hash the retrievable payload, and compare that hash with the archive’s recorded digest. Treat the timestamp as the archive’s recorded capture time—not independent proof that the bytes were created then. If available, inspect the WARC record and record the Memento-Datetime header as additional, corroborating evidence.

What you can prove—and what you cannot

An archive verification usually establishes two separate facts:

  • Integrity relative to the archive: the bytes you retrieved match the digest recorded for that capture.
  • Archive-recorded time: the archive says it captured the resource at a particular timestamp.

Those facts do not, by themselves, prove when the original publisher created the content, that the archive clock was independently attested, or that the replay is byte-for-byte identical to the live response. Archive processing can rewrite URLs or migrate formats, and a replay body can therefore differ from the original HTTP entity.

Use precise wording in a report: “The archive index records a capture at YYYYMMDDhhmmss GMT, and the retrieved payload matches the listed digest.” Do not write “the creation date is proven” unless you also have a separately verifiable timestamp or provenance chain.

Seagate 2TB Portable Hard Drive | USB 3.0 (STGX2000400)
  • Easily store and access 2TB to content on the go with the Seagate Portable Drive, a USB external hard drive
  • Designed to work with Windows or Mac computers, this external hard drive makes backup a snap just drag and drop
  • To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition no software required
  • This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable
  • The available storage capacity may vary.

1. Pin down the exact capture

Start with the complete replay URL and the original URL. Record the archive institution, collection, and any identifier shown by the service. A calendar dot is not enough: Archive-It explains that its calendar can collapse captures taken within minutes, while the CDX index may contain several distinct records.

  • Original URL, including path and query string
  • Archive name and collection
  • Replay URL copied verbatim
  • Raw 14-digit capture timestamp
  • Status code and MIME type
  • Digest and digest algorithm, if shown
  • Payload length
  • WARC filename and byte offset, if supplied

Save the page or API response containing these fields as evidence. Do not silently normalize the URL, remove a query parameter, or substitute a nearby capture.

2. Read the CDX index record

CDX is the index format commonly used to describe web-archive captures. Archive-It documents fields including the original URL, timestamp, status, MIME type, digest, length, filename, and offset. The Library of Congress describes the CDX timestamp as the point at which the object was captured, measured in GMT.

Preserve both forms of the time:

  1. Keep the raw 14-digit value, such as 20260929143012.
  2. Render it for people as 2026-09-29 14:30:12 GMT.
  3. Label it explicitly as the archive’s recorded capture time.

Never convert the value to local time and discard GMT. A timezone mistake can make an otherwise accurate record appear to have been captured on a different date.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

3. Verify the payload digest

A CDX digest is a fingerprint of the indexed payload. Archive-It describes its value as a Base32-encoded SHA-1 checksum; the Library of Congress also describes the digest as a fingerprint. A match demonstrates consistency between the bytes you hashed and the archive’s recorded fingerprint.

Obtain the right bytes

Prefer an endpoint or download that returns the captured object rather than a replay wrapper containing archive banners, rewritten markup, or navigation chrome. If the service only exposes replay, document that limitation: transformations can change the bytes and make a direct digest comparison invalid.

Hash locally

For a file named capture.bin, calculate SHA-1 with a platform utility:

  • Designed to work with Windows or Mac computers, this external hard drive makes backup a snap just drag and drop

  • This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable

  • Linux: sha1sum capture.bin
  • macOS: shasum -a 1 capture.bin
  • Windows PowerShell: Get-FileHash .capture.bin -Algorithm SHA1

Compare the result using the archive’s representation. A hexadecimal SHA-1 string is not textually equal to a Base32 digest even when both represent the same 160-bit value, so decode or re-encode consistently before comparing. Record the exact file, retrieval URL, date of retrieval, algorithm, and representation used.

Interpret the result

  • Match: the retrieved bytes are consistent with the archive’s listed digest.
  • Mismatch: you may have received a replay wrapper, a transformed representation, the wrong capture, an incomplete download, or a changed archive object. Recheck the URL, timestamp, redirects, content encoding, and retrieval method.
  • No digest: report that the archive did not expose a digest; do not infer integrity from the timestamp alone.

4. Inspect WARC metadata when access is available

WARC files package captured web resources with metadata. Their records include fields such as date, type, and length. A CDX filename and offset can locate the corresponding record, allowing a second view of the target URL, timestamp, and payload.

WARC access is not always public. Archive-It says downloads of WARC storage and associated metadata are available to credentialed partners, so an ordinary visitor may be unable to obtain the record. If you can access it:

  1. Use the CDX filename and offset to locate the record.
  2. Confirm that the WARC target URL matches the original URL in the index.
  3. Compare the WARC date and record type with the CDX entry.
  4. Check the declared length against the bytes you retrieved.
  5. Preserve the record and its access conditions in your evidence package.

Agreement between CDX and WARC strengthens the claim that you identified the intended archive record. It remains evidence from the same archive, not an independent external timestamp authority.

5. Capture Memento protocol metadata

Memento is a standard method for negotiating prior states of a resource. When supported, record the Memento-Datetime response header and the original relation link. The header identifies the archival datetime associated with the Memento.

RFC 7089 is an informational RFC, not an Internet Standards Track specification. It also cautions that replay bytes can differ from the original entity because an archive may rewrite URIs or migrate formats. Use Memento-Datetime as protocol metadata that corroborates the archive’s date, not as proof that the replay is identical to the historical live response.

6. Build an evidence record another person can reproduce

A defensible verification packet should contain:

  • The complete original and replay URLs
  • Archive, collection, and access date
  • Raw timestamp and GMT rendering
  • Status code, MIME type, length, and digest
  • WARC filename and offset, when exposed
  • The exact retrieval endpoint and whether it returned raw data or replay HTML
  • Hash command, algorithm, encoding, and resulting value
  • Memento-Datetime and original link, when present
  • Any redirect, missing-resource, or replay warning

Then state the conclusion in two clauses: what the archive records, and what your byte-level check found. Keep those clauses separate from any claim about publication or creation by the original author.

Comparing several captures

When multiple records exist, compare them systematically rather than choosing the most convenient calendar entry.

Axis What to compare
Identity Exact original URL, redirect target, status code, and MIME type
Time evidence Raw archive timestamp, GMT basis, Memento-Datetime, and separate timestamp evidence
Integrity Digest algorithm, digest value, bytes hashed, and match result
Record access Whether WARC data and metadata are available for inspection
Completeness Whether required resources were captured and whether the archive reports replay limitations

A later capture may contain a newer page, while an earlier capture may lack images, scripts, or embedded media. Choose the record that answers your question and describe what is missing.

Common failure modes and fixes

The calendar shows one capture, but CDX shows more

Use the CDX record’s exact timestamp. Calendar interfaces can group captures taken within minutes.

The hash does not match

Check whether you hashed archive navigation HTML instead of the captured object. Verify redirects, compression, content encoding, and whether the service transformed the replay. Download again and document the representation.

The requested date is absent

Archives may display the closest available capture rather than an exact-date capture. Report the actual timestamp and say that the requested date was not available.

The page looks incomplete

Web archives cannot preserve every resource. The Library of Congress identifies limitations including streaming media, databases, deep-web content, and rich multimedia. Treat missing assets as a capture-completeness limitation, not evidence that the original page lacked them.

WARC data is unavailable

Do not imply that you inspected a WARC record. Cite the CDX fields and replay evidence you actually obtained, and state that WARC access was unavailable.

A timestamp appears in a page’s visible text

That is publisher content, not necessarily archive metadata. Keep it separate from the CDX timestamp and explain which clock each value represents.

FAQ

Does a matching SHA-1 prove who created a page?

No. It proves that the bytes you checked correspond to the archive’s listed fingerprint. Authorship and original publication time require separate evidence.

Should I convert every timestamp to my local timezone?

You may show a local rendering for convenience, but always preserve the raw timestamp and its documented GMT basis.

Is an archived replay a complete copy of the live website?

Not necessarily. Missing media, databases, deep-web content, scripts, or streaming resources can make a replay incomplete.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does a matching SHA-1 prove who created a page?

No. It verifies consistency with the archive’s recorded fingerprint, not authorship or original publication time.
