Verify the claim by checking an official item record where available, tracing the garment’s provenance, comparing its construction and distinctive features with dated game images, and getting specialist review when the stakes warrant it. If the evidence does not establish actual use, describe it as unverified—not game-worn.
First, establish exactly what the seller is claiming
“Game-worn” means the athlete wore that particular jersey in a game or competitive event. “Game-issued” means it was prepared or made available for the athlete, but actual use has not been established. Other descriptions—such as game-used, team-issued, player-issued, authentic, or licensed—also have specific meanings and should not be treated as interchangeable.

Correct tags, the right size, player customization, or team ownership can support a claim, but do not by themselves prove that the jersey was worn in a game. Programs also define and label their categories differently. The St. Louis Blues’ game-used program, for example, distinguishes authentic game-used equipment from locker-room-issued jerseys.
Check official identifiers against the issuer’s record
For MLB-authenticated items
- Find the MLB authentication hologram on the item and note its unique prefix and serial number.
- Enter those details in MLB’s official authentication database.
- Compare the database result with the physical jersey and the seller’s exact claim. Check that the item description and authentication category make sense for the garment being offered.
- If the hologram is missing from the database or the record appears incorrect, MLB says to contact its program with an image of the hologram and details about the item.
MLB distinguishes game-used authentication holograms from holograms on licensed products; the latter do not appear in the game-used authentication database. A missing result is not, by itself, proof of fraud. MLB’s lookup and rules apply to its own program, not universally to jerseys from other leagues or teams.

MLB says its program has authenticated more than six million items since it began in 2001. That is a cumulative figure reported on MLB’s current program page, not an annual rate. The program authenticates eligible items witnessed at the time of signing or use with a club or MLB licensee; MLB says it does not authenticate past items submitted independently.
Assess the certificate and the chain of ownership
A certificate of authenticity (COA) is useful only to the extent that its issuer and the item-specific record can be verified. Check who issued it, whether its description and identifier match the jersey, and whether the issuer offers a lookup or underlying documentation. A COA that cannot be tied to a verifiable issuer record is a claim to investigate, not conclusive proof.
MLB’s program records evidence and chain of custody for eligible items it witnesses. In a September 22, 2021 account of that process, MLB director of authentication Michael Posner said, “We’re here to record history.” The statement describes MLB’s program, not a universal standard for every sport. The Blues describe signed COAs and serial-number lookup for certain program categories; read the category and full item description rather than inferring game use from team ownership or a sale. The team also identifies some end-of-season or sale items as practice-only or remaining equipment, and says those items do not come with a COA.

Inspect the jersey’s construction and condition
Request clear photographs of the front and back, labels and tags, name and number application, patches, visible wear or damage, and every hologram or item number. Preserve the original listing and correspondence. Review the garment for consistency with the claimed player, team, and period:
- Manufacturer and team tags, size, and season-appropriate construction.
- Customization and the application and alignment of letters, numbers, logos, and patches.
- Alterations, repairs, wear, stains, discoloration, or damage that the seller attributes to use.
These are evidence inputs, not a checklist that independently proves game use. Tags can be correct on an issued but unworn jersey, while wear can arise outside a game. Reviewers such as Grey Flannel Auctions and PhotoMatchForensics describe provenance, construction, customization, and condition as relevant parts of an assessment; no single tag or wear mark settles the question.
Photo-match the specific jersey to dated game images
Compare the garment with dated photographs or video from the claimed game or period. The goal is not merely to find the same team style, but to connect distinctive, item-specific features to the jersey. Look for details such as:

A persuasive match shows several identifiable details in the same places on the garment and in the image. Similar colors, a familiar number, or a standard team patch are not distinctive matches on their own. The quality and angle of the available images also limit what can be compared.

When to seek specialist review
For a high-value purchase or a disputed claim, consider a specialist review or photo match rather than relying on visual inspection alone. PSA Photo Match describes examining unique attributes, searching visual libraries, and issuing a Photo Match Certificate with a verifiable certification number after a successful match. PSA also states that certification involves subjective professional judgment. Read the exact conclusion and scope of any report: a match is evidence for the features and images reviewed, not an infallible guarantee of every claim about the jersey.
Specialist services differ in scope, and a review cannot create an item-specific official record where none exists. Ask what materials the reviewer examined, what conclusion is being certified, and what limitations apply.
Compare two purported jerseys by the evidence, not the label
| Evidence to compare | What to look for |
|---|---|
| Provenance | Specific, documented ownership and transfer history that corresponds to the garment, rather than a general seller story. |
| Official identifier | Whether a league or team identifier resolves to an item-specific record, and whether that record supports the stated category. |
| Claim category | Whether the item is described as game-worn, game-used, team-issued, player-issued, locker-room-issued, or merely authentic/licensed merchandise. |
| Construction | Whether tags, customization, and construction fit the claimed team, player, and period. |
| Wear and images | Whether documented condition and dated photographs show distinctive features matching this specific garment. |
More paperwork is not automatically better: its value depends on whether it identifies the jersey being sold and supports the precise claim made for it.

A practical verification workflow
- Ask the seller to state the exact category claimed: game-worn, game-used, team-issued, player-issued, or authentic/licensed merchandise.
- Request full photographs of the garment, tags, customization, wear, damage, and all identifiers. Save the listing and seller correspondence.
- Look up any league or team code using the issuer’s official service, then compare the returned record with the jersey and sale description.
- Trace the ownership and sale history; assess construction and condition against reliable period examples.
- Compare distinctive details with dated game photographs or video. For a high-value or contested item, obtain specialist review and read its precise conclusion and limitations.
- If identifiers do not resolve, the categories conflict, or the seller will not provide enough detail, treat the game-worn claim as unverified.
