Verify a high-value video game collectible by checking five different things: the exact release and its components, any claimed original seal, the grading record and holder, the item’s ownership documents, and the seller’s transaction terms. These checks answer different questions; a certification lookup, for example, is not a history of ownership. For a costly purchase, compare the exact item with appropriate references and known examples, preserve the records, and get a qualified in-person inspection if uncertainty remains.
1. Identify the exact release before judging the item
Start by recording the platform, title, region, publisher, edition or printing, and any claimed variant. Packaging and included materials can differ between regions and printings, so a visually similar copy is not necessarily the right reference.

Use specialist references for the specific release. CGC’s video game reference guides describe variant types, regional differences, and key titles. Its complete-in-box guide maps expected boxes, cartridges, manuals, and game-specific inserts. Match the copy against the relevant edition rather than a generic checklist.
2. Check components, condition, and signs of alteration
For a complete-in-box game, compare every component with the edition-specific reference. Record anything missing, substituted, inconsistent in print or material, or showing signs of handling or repair. A matching set of components helps identify what the item is; it does not establish who owned it or when.

Inspect packaging carefully and document what you see with clear photographs. A 10x jeweler’s loupe can help examine small details, but it cannot authenticate a game by itself. If an observation is uncertain, describe it as such rather than treating it as proof of tampering.
3. Treat a claimed factory seal as a separate question
Plastic and seal styles vary by console and publisher. Compare a claimed original seal with known copies of the same game and release, not merely with a general idea of what shrink wrap should look like. CGC’s reseal guidance emphasizes that comparison because repackaging can use authentic or non-authentic plastic after a game has been opened. A “sealed” label or attractive wrap alone is not conclusive.

CGC Video Games Senior Grading Finalizer Matt McClellan said, “Collectors, especially those new to the space, often don’t realize how frequently games are manipulated or altered to create a more appealing package.” This is CGC’s characterization, not a measured prevalence statistic.

Check the certification number against the physical item
For a CGC-certified game, enter the certification number in CGC’s official verification lookup. Compare the database description and grade with the game and holder in front of you. CGC says the lookup can help confirm that a holder is genuine and has not been tampered with. A matching record is useful, but it is not a complete provenance record.

Read the guarantee, not just the label
CGC says video games are inspected by at least two professionals and are guaranteed authentic unless the label says otherwise. Its guarantee specifically excludes video-game designations such as Sealed, New, and Complete/Complete-in-Box; it also excludes playability and internal contents. The published compensation limit is $10,000 per video-game collectible, subject to the full terms. That figure is a limit in CGC’s guarantee, not a valuation or an industry-wide standard. A grade or designation should not be mistaken for a documented, unbroken chain of ownership. Grading, seal assessment, component identification, and provenance research are distinct checks.

5. Build a provenance file and test its consistency
Ask the seller for the records available for the exact item, then retain copies. Useful documents include:

- Certification details, serial information, and edition descriptions tied to the item.
Compare dates, descriptions, serial or certification details, and edition claims across records. Gaps do not automatically prove a problem, but they limit what can be established. This is a practical checklist, not a universally prescribed video-game provenance standard.

6. Read the transaction terms before paying or bidding
Check the live terms for the specific seller or auction, as well as any conditions attached to the individual lot. Heritage’s published terms state that bidders are responsible for reaching their own conclusion about provenance and authenticity before bidding. For the covered video-game auction terms, a challenge must be made in writing within 30 days of the auction close; remedies are limited. The terms were revised August 1, 2024, and may change, so confirm the current buying terms and the lot conditions before committing funds.
Save the listing, terms, correspondence, payment record, and item photographs. If a concern emerges later, those materials can help establish what was represented and when.
7. Escalate when the value or uncertainty warrants it
For a high-value purchase, consider an independent specialist with experience in the relevant console, release, and packaging. Ask what the inspection covers: the game, components, seal, holder, ownership documents, or some combination. Also ask whether the item will be examined in person or from photographs, what written conclusion or guarantee is provided, and what it costs, how long it takes, and what shipping risks apply.
