Before buying, identify the beneficiary by its exact legal name, confirm its IRS tax-exempt status and state solicitation registration, read the donation formula and limits, and check independent financial and accountability information. If the seller will not disclose the amount, cap, dates, destination program, or transfer timing, choose another product or donate directly through a charity website you have independently verified.
Why a pink ribbon does not establish a donation
“Breast-cancer awareness,” a ribbon graphic, and statements such as “supports families” describe a theme, not a documented transfer of money. A legitimate purchase-linked promotion should identify the benefiting organization and explain how the contribution is calculated. The promise may be a fixed amount per item, a percentage of a sale, a contribution after a minimum order, or a share of proceeds. Those formulas produce very different results, so the headline percentage alone is not enough.

The seller may also limit the offer by country, state, product line, sales channel, or campaign period. A promotion that appears on a social-media post can have different terms from the current product page. Save the exact offer you are considering rather than relying on a repost or a later summary.
Capture the offer before you pay
Preserve the terms while they are visible. Take screenshots or save a PDF of the product page, and keep the packaging, order confirmation, receipt, and any linked terms. Record the following details in one place:

- The seller’s legal or business name and the exact product or SKU.
- The beneficiary’s complete legal name, not merely a cause description.
- The donation amount or calculation, including whether it is per item, per order, or a share of proceeds.
- The campaign start and end dates, geographic limits, and eligible sales channels.
- Any maximum contribution, minimum purchase, exclusions, or one-time allowance.
- Whether the seller says when money will be transferred and which program will receive it.
Terms that are missing from the page are not a harmless detail. They prevent you from calculating the likely contribution and make it difficult to challenge a misleading claim later.
Identify the beneficiary independently
Find the exact legal name
Do not treat “breast-cancer research,” “helping survivors,” or a familiar acronym as an organization. Look for the charity’s legal name in the promotion’s terms, then type that name into a new browser window and open the organization’s own website. Avoid assuming that a logo, social-media account, or look-alike domain belongs to the real charity.
Federal Trade Commission consumer guidance advises confirming the exact charity name and researching it before giving. A seller that names only a broad cause has not given you enough information to verify where the money goes.

Search the organization in the IRS Tax Exempt Organization Search. Confirm that the legal name and location match the beneficiary named in the promotion and that the organization is recognized as tax-exempt. A name that cannot be matched may indicate a typo, an intermediary, a newly formed organization not yet listed, or a false claim. Ask the organization to explain the discrepancy before purchasing; do not infer legitimacy from a similar name.
Check state solicitation registration
Use the charity regulator in the state where the solicitation is directed. FTC business guidance says fundraisers should verify that a charity “has 501(c)(3) status with the IRS” and “is registered to solicit donations in your state.” Registration rules and exemptions differ by state, so an organization may be registered in one jurisdiction and not another. A missing record deserves an explanation tied to your location and the campaign’s sales channel.
Review independent accountability information
Legal status establishes identity and eligibility; it does not tell you whether a campaign is well governed or effective. Check the beneficiary in more than one independent source when available:

- CharityWatch: Look for published analysis of fundraising efficiency, program spending, and accountability.
- Charity Navigator: Review available scores and the underlying information about finance, leadership, and accountability rather than relying only on a headline rating.
- Candid: Compare the organization’s profile, mission, filings, leadership, and program descriptions with the promotion’s claims.
Read the most recent Form 990 filings and audited financial statements when they are available. Look for a clear description of breast-cancer programs, related spending, restricted funds, and any enforcement or complaint history. A charity can be legally recognized while a particular product campaign is poorly documented, so connect the independent information to the specific offer.
Translate the marketing claim into a measurable amount
Ask how much a single qualifying purchase contributes, what limits apply, and when the transfer occurs. A percentage can sound generous while producing a small amount if it applies only to a narrow definition of “net proceeds.” Conversely, a modest fixed amount may be easier to verify.

Request the formula in writing. Useful questions include: “What exact amount is donated per purchase?” “Is there a maximum?” “When is it sent?” and “Which program receives it?” The FTC advises asking how much reaches the programs you care about and reviewing the charity’s financial information.
Check the destination program, not just the organization
Large charities may operate research grants, patient assistance, screening, education, advocacy, or general operating programs. “To the charity” does not necessarily mean “to screenings” or “to research.” Ask whether the contribution is unrestricted or restricted to a named program, and whether the seller has promised a particular use.
Compare the answer with the beneficiary’s program descriptions and filings. If the promotion promises a specific service but the charity cannot confirm that restriction, treat the claim as unresolved. The seller should also explain whether it sends the money directly, uses a commercial co-venturer, or passes it through another organization.
Verify that the promotion follows cause-marketing basics
Purchase or proof-of-purchase promotions are cause-marketing claims. BBB Wise Giving Alliance guidance treats them as claims that should identify the benefiting charity and explain the donation calculation. The offer should therefore make the following visible without requiring guesswork:

- The charity’s legal identity and a way to contact it independently.
- The dollar amount or percentage and the base to which it applies.
- The campaign dates, geographic scope, qualifying products, and any cap.
- How and when the seller will report or transfer the contribution.
Ask the charity whether it authorized the promotion and whether the seller is using its name and marks. An organization that has never heard of the campaign cannot validate the seller’s representation.
Use a payment method that leaves a record
Pay by credit card or check when you decide to proceed. These methods create documentation linking the purchase to the advertised terms and may provide dispute or fraud protections. Keep the receipt and the saved promotion together.
The FTC warns that when someone says the only way to pay is with cryptocurrency, a payment app, a gift card, or a wire transfer, “it’s likely a scam, not a real charity.” A legitimate product campaign should not force an irreversible payment channel as the sole option. A payment app can be acceptable in some ordinary retail transactions, but an insistence that it is the only method is a warning sign, especially when combined with urgency or an unfamiliar beneficiary.

Red flags that justify walking away
The beneficiary is unnamed or unverifiable
A ribbon, “awareness” slogan, or “helping families” language without a legal charity name prevents basic due diligence. The same is true when the named organization cannot be found in IRS or state records and the seller cannot explain why.
The money claim is vague
Refusal to state a dollar amount, percentage, cap, dates, calculation base, transfer timing, or destination program means you cannot know what your purchase supports. “A portion of proceeds” without a definition is not a measurable promise.
The link or account looks copied
Check the domain character by character and reach the charity through a separately typed address. A look-alike domain, a social-media repost, or a shortened link should not be your only evidence of authorization.

Pressure replaces information
Countdowns, claims that stock is disappearing, emotional images, and demands for an immediate decision are not substitutes for terms. FTC consumer guidance identifies pressure and vague appeals as warning signs.

Payment is irreversible or unusual
Cryptocurrency, gift cards, wires, or an app-only demand is particularly risky when the seller will not accept a card or check and cannot provide verifiable business and charity details.

- Save the offer. Capture the product page, packaging, receipt, fine print, seller, beneficiary, formula, dates, geography, and cap.
- Identify the organization. Find its exact legal name and independently open its official website.
- Check legal records. Search the IRS Tax Exempt Organization Search and the relevant state charity regulator; reconcile names and addresses.
- Review accountability. Check BBB Wise Giving Alliance, CharityWatch, Charity Navigator, or Candid, then read available Form 990 filings and financial statements.
- Test the claim. Ask for the amount per purchase, calculation base, maximum, dates, transfer timing, and receiving program.
- Confirm authorization. Contact the charity using contact information obtained independently and ask whether it approved the campaign.
- Choose a traceable payment. Use a credit card or check and retain all records.
- Stop if evidence is missing. Select another product or donate directly through the independently verified charity website.
How to compare two competing campaigns
Compare campaigns on evidence, not the largest advertised percentage. Use this checklist before choosing:

If one campaign advertises a larger percentage but cannot define the base or beneficiary, the smaller, fully documented contribution is the more defensible choice. If neither campaign answers basic questions, donate directly instead.
What an enforcement case demonstrates
Marketing language can diverge sharply from program impact. In 2025 reporting, the Federal Trade Commission said Kars raised $45.5 million for United Breast Cancer Foundation between 2017 and 2022. The same FTC report said the foundation spent less than 1% of that money on breast-cancer screenings. These figures do not establish that every product promotion is improper, nor do they determine the current status of any particular campaign. They show why a familiar cause label should be checked against the beneficiary’s filings, program spending, and enforcement history.
Use the case as a reason to ask where funds actually went, not as proof that a specific seller or charity is fraudulent. The relevant evidence is the exact campaign terms and the beneficiary’s current records.
What to do after buying
Keep a complete record
Store the receipt, order number, screenshots, packaging, and correspondence. Note the campaign’s promised transfer date and any reporting deadline.
Look for post-campaign disclosure
Check whether the seller or charity publishes the amount raised, the date transferred, and the program that received it. If the promotion promised a cap or a per-item amount, the final report should make the calculation understandable.
Ask for clarification or report concerns
Contact the seller and beneficiary in writing when the promised information is absent. Preserve their replies. If you suspect deception, report it to the appropriate state charity regulator and the Federal Trade Commission, and contact your card issuer promptly if the transaction itself appears fraudulent.

A direct donation removes the uncertainty created by a retail intermediary. Use the charity’s independently verified website, confirm that the payment page belongs to the organization, and designate a program only when the charity explains how restricted gifts are handled. Direct giving does not eliminate the need to review legal status and financial information, but it makes the amount, recipient, and payment record clearer than an undefined “portion of proceeds” offer.
Questions to answer before checkout
- What is the beneficiary’s exact legal name?
- Can I match it to IRS and state records for my location?
- How many dollars from this purchase will be donated, and what is the calculation base?
- Is there a cap, a minimum purchase, an eligible-product list, or an end date?
- Which program receives the money, and is the gift restricted?
- When will the seller transfer the funds, and will either party publish a report?
- Has the charity independently confirmed that it authorized this promotion?
- Can I pay by credit card or check and retain a receipt?
A “no” or “not stated” answer does not prove fraud by itself, but several missing answers together mean the purchase cannot be responsibly verified.
