How to Verify Someone’s Identity Before Meeting or Sending Money Online

You cannot conclusively verify an online contact’s identity with a profile, photo search, video call, or platform badge. You can, however, slow the situation down, check claims independently, identify contradictions, involve someone you trust, and avoid an unsafe meeting or irreversible payment. Never send money to a person you know only online or by phone.

What “verification” can—and cannot—prove

A convincing profile is not proof that the person behind it is genuine. The FBI defines a romance scam as one in which “a criminal uses a fake online identity to gain a victim’s affection and trust.” The same pattern can occur outside dating: a new contact may build rapport, claim an urgent problem, and then ask for money, account access, or sensitive information.

Consumer checks are best treated as warning-sign searches, not authentication. A reverse image search may show that a photograph appears under another name. Searching a person’s story may reveal contradictions or reports from other victims. A video call can show that someone can appear on camera, but it does not establish the person’s legal identity, location, or intentions. Even a badge supplied by an app is not a guarantee that every claim is true.

Use this decision rule:

  • No independent confirmation: keep the relationship online and do not send money or sensitive information.
  • Contradictions, pressure, isolation, or urgency: pause contact, consult someone you trust, and consider ending the interaction.
  • A request for money from someone known only online or by phone: do not pay.

The goal is not to “catch” a stranger in a test. It is to protect your money, accounts, personal information, and physical safety while you decide whether continued contact makes sense.

Checks to make before agreeing to meet

1. Search the profile photo

Use an image-search service to look for the same photograph elsewhere on the web. Compare names, locations, occupations, and dates attached to the image. A photograph reused with several identities is a strong warning sign. So is a profile whose biography changes from one page to another.

A clean search does not clear the person. An image may be private, too new to be indexed, or copied from a page that search engines cannot access. Record what you actually find rather than assuming that no result means the photo is original.

2. Search identifying details and claims

Search the person’s name, username, claimed city, employer, and distinctive phrases from their story. Search a claimed occupation or explanation together with the word scammer. This can surface warnings from people who encountered the same script or identity.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check whether basic details line up across independent pages. Look for a consistent timeline, location, work history, and method of contact. A mismatch is a reason to ask a calm follow-up question, not an invitation to investigate or confront the person aggressively.

3. Ask ordinary follow-up questions over time

Scammers often try to move quickly from an introduction to emotional dependence or a financial request. Take time to ask normal questions about the person’s day, work, family, and plans. Revisit details naturally on different days and compare the answers. Evasive replies, sudden changes, or a polished story that cannot withstand simple questions deserve caution.

Do not treat a fluent conversation, a convincing accent, a video call, or apparent knowledge of your interests as identity proof. Those features may be genuine, staged, or obtained from information you have already shared.

4. Watch how the person handles boundaries

Pay attention to behavior rather than promises. The FBI and Federal Trade Commission identify several patterns that should make you slow down:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • They push you to leave the dating or social platform immediately.
  • They repeatedly avoid an in-person meeting or offer changing explanations for why it cannot happen.
  • They pressure you to keep the relationship secret or discourage you from speaking with friends and family.
  • They ask for financial information, account credentials, copies of identity documents, or other sensitive personal data.
  • They create urgency and demand a decision before you can check the story.

A respectful person can accept “no,” give you time, and tolerate independent checks. Someone who reacts to a reasonable boundary with anger, guilt, threats, or claims that you do not trust them is showing you useful information.

5. Get an outside perspective

Tell a trusted friend or family member what is happening before you meet or pay. Share the profile link, the name being used, the main story, and any request for money. An outside person may notice that the timeline or explanation does not make sense, while isolation makes pressure harder to recognize.

Keep your adviser involved if the contact asks you to keep the relationship secret. Do not let an online acquaintance define which people you may consult.

How to plan a safer first meeting

Online checks cannot remove the risks of meeting a stranger. If you decide to meet, make a separate safety plan that does not depend on the person’s identity being verified.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Choose a public location. Meet during a time when other people and staff are present. Avoid a private home, hotel room, isolated trail, or a location selected solely by the other person.
  2. Tell someone the plan. Give a trusted person the name used by the contact, the meeting address, your expected arrival and return times, and how you will travel.
  3. Set a check-in. Agree when your contact will expect a message. Decide in advance what they should do if you miss it.
  4. Use your own transportation. Do not depend on the new contact for a ride or allow the first meeting to move spontaneously to a second, private location.
  5. Keep control of personal information. Do not hand over your home address, financial details, identity-document images, passwords, or access codes simply because you met in person.
  6. Leave when you want. You do not owe extra time, a second location, alcohol, sex, or an explanation. If the situation feels wrong, contact your trusted person and leave.

Tell your contact where you will be and when you expect to return. This basic step is recommended by the FBI and other safety guidance because it gives another person a way to notice that plans have changed.

Before sending money: use a hard stop

Do not send money to a romantic or personal contact you have communicated with only online or by phone. This remains the safest rule even when the story sounds plausible, the person has shared photos, or you have spoken repeatedly.

Be especially cautious about these requests:

Request or payment method Why to stop Safe response
Emergency, medical, travel, or legal bill Urgency is used to prevent independent checking. Do not pay. End the financial discussion and consult someone you trust.
Gift cards Codes can be transferred quickly and are difficult to recover. Never buy or disclose gift-card numbers or photographs of them.
Cryptocurrency Transfers are generally difficult to reverse and may be sent to an unknown wallet. Do not transfer digital currency at the contact’s direction.
Wire transfer or cash Funds may leave your control immediately. Do not send. A government agency will not tell you to wire money to resolve a problem.
Investment opportunity A romance scam may shift into an investment pitch after trust is established. Do not invest through the contact or use a link, wallet, or account they provide.
Use of your bank account Your account could be used to move stolen money or carry out fraud. Never receive, forward, or “temporarily hold” money for an online contact.

A February 2025 FTC alert described romance-scam requests connected to travel, emergencies, and investments. Treat a sudden request as a reason to pause, not as evidence that you are the person who can solve the problem.

Verify claimed organizations independently

If the person says they represent a government agency, bank, employer, charity, or another known organization, do not use the telephone number, email address, website, or payment instructions they supplied. Find the organization’s contact information through a source you already trust and contact it yourself. Ask whether the claim is real without disclosing more personal information than necessary.

The FTC says government agencies will not ask people to wire money. A caller who insists that you must pay immediately, keep the matter secret, or use a particular payment method is not giving you a safe verification route.

A practical evidence-and-risk framework

No single check establishes identity. Consider the independence and quality of each piece of information instead.

Observation What it can tell you What it cannot tell you
Reverse image search finds the same photo under another name The image may be reused or stolen; the profile needs further scrutiny. It does not identify the real person in the photograph.
Searches reveal matching warnings or contradictions The story may be part of a known pattern. A lack of search results does not prove honesty.
Answers remain consistent over time The account is less obviously contradictory. Consistency can be rehearsed and does not prove identity.
The person accepts your boundaries and outside advice There is less immediate evidence of coercive behavior. Polite behavior is not a guarantee of safety.
The person refuses to meet, creates urgency, isolates you, or asks for money These are significant warning signs. They do not require you to prove fraud before ending contact.

Think in terms of cumulative risk. Several modest concerns—an inconsistent job history, pressure to move off-platform, and an urgent request—matter more together than any single reassuring detail.

What not to do while checking

  • Do not send sensitive information as a “test.” Financial details, identity documents, passwords, one-time codes, and account-recovery information can be used against you.
  • Do not confront the person with your research. Confrontation may provoke further manipulation or erase evidence. You can stop replying without proving your case to the contact.
  • Do not click links or install software at the contact’s direction. A request to “verify” yourself through an unfamiliar page can be an attempt to steal credentials or payment data.
  • Do not let sunk costs decide. Time spent chatting, gifts already exchanged, or emotional attachment do not make a payment safer.
  • Do not recruit your bank account into the relationship. Receiving and forwarding funds can expose you to theft, account restrictions, or participation in fraud.

If you already sent money

Act quickly, but recognize that recovery is not guaranteed.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Stop communicating with the suspected scammer. Do not pay a second fee to “unlock” a refund or recover the first payment.
  2. Contact the bank, card issuer, wire service, gift-card company, or cryptocurrency service immediately. Explain that you believe the transaction was fraudulent and ask whether it can be stopped, reversed, or recovered. Provide transaction dates, amounts, recipient details, messages, and receipts.
  3. Secure related accounts. Change passwords from a trusted device, enable multifactor authentication where available, and contact your financial institution if you shared account credentials or one-time codes.
  4. Report the incident to the Federal Trade Commission and the platform where the contact began. Keep copies of the profile, messages, payment records, and any account identifiers. Do not delete evidence before saving it.
  5. Consider local reporting. U.S. readers can also contact local law enforcement. Readers elsewhere should use their national consumer-protection and law-enforcement reporting services.

The FTC cautions that money may already be gone, but contacting the payment provider promptly is still the correct step. Anyone who promises guaranteed recovery in exchange for an upfront fee may be running a second scam.

What the available statistics mean

FTC data discussed in a 2023 spotlight on reports from 2022 found that cryptocurrency and bank wires together accounted for more than 60% of reported losses to romance scams. In the same 2022 reports, 24% of people who said they lost money to a romance scam reported that gift cards were used.

These figures describe reported romance-scam losses for 2022; they are not a current estimate for every kind of online identity fraud and do not calculate your personal probability of being scammed. Many incidents are never reported, and payment methods change. The practical lesson is narrower: irreversible or hard-to-recover payment methods deserve a firm refusal when the recipient is known only online.

Questions to ask yourself before deciding

  • Can I independently check the person’s important claims without using contact details they supplied?
  • Have I told someone I trust, and have they seen the request or profile?
  • Has the person respected my pace and my “no,” or have they created urgency?
  • Am I being asked for money, account access, identity documents, or secrecy?
  • Would I make the same decision if I had never received the flattering messages or emotional promises?

If the answers leave you uncertain, choose the reversible option: do not meet privately, do not send money, and step back from the conversation. You do not need courtroom-level proof to protect yourself.

Geographic and source limits

The procedures and reporting references above are based primarily on U.S. guidance from the FBI and FTC, including the FTC’s February 2025 consumer alert and its 2023 spotlight on 2022 reports. Agency names, payment rules, and reporting channels differ elsewhere. Outside the United States, use your local bank or payment provider, consumer-protection authority, platform reporting tools, and police or cybercrime service.
