Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteUse several modest checks together rather than looking for a single “proof” of identity. Compare the person’s story and photos across public sources, ask ordinary follow-up questions over time, consider a live video conversation, and watch how they respond to reasonable boundaries. These steps can reveal inconsistencies, but none proves who someone is or guarantees a safe meeting.
Keep control of your information and timing. Do not send money, gifts, financial details, intimate images, or investment funds to someone you have only met online. If you decide to meet, make the first meeting a separate safety decision: tell someone you trust, choose a busy public place, use your own transportation, and keep an exit plan.

What “verification” can—and cannot—establish
Online verification is a process of checking whether a person’s identity claims, images, timeline, and behavior fit together. It is not a background check, a legal identity confirmation, or a guarantee that the person is safe. Stolen photographs, fabricated biographies, hacked accounts, and people who are truthful about their name but unsafe in person can all defeat a simple search.
Think in terms of confidence and risk management. A consistent profile, calm answers, and a respectful video call are reassuring evidence. They are not conclusive evidence. Conversely, one awkward answer may have an innocent explanation, while a pattern of contradictions, pressure, isolation, or financial requests is a reason to slow down or stop.

The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) and Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) recommend researching profile details and photos, including reverse-image searches. The Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) warns that a person may communicate for a long time without appearing in person or on video. Treat every check as one input into your decision, not as a pass/fail identity certificate.
Start with a controlled conversation
Keep early messages on the platform
Dating and social platforms generally provide blocking, reporting, and account records. Keeping initial communication there gives you those tools and lets you observe whether the person is eager to bypass basic safeguards. You can move to another service later if you choose, but do not let urgency make that decision for you.
Do not share your home address, daily route, workplace access details, financial information, copies of identification, account passwords, or other sensitive data while you are still establishing basic trust. A person does not need those details to have a normal first conversation.
Set a pace you can maintain
Tell the person what pace feels comfortable: for example, messaging for a while, then a short call, then a public meeting if you remain comfortable. You do not owe an immediate date because someone has been attentive, says there is an emergency, or claims that a delay proves you are not interested.
Pay attention to the response rather than trying to diagnose motives. Respect for a reasonable boundary is useful evidence. Anger, guilt-tripping, threats to disappear, or repeated attempts to wear you down are risk signals even if the profile itself looks polished.
Check whether the profile is internally consistent
Build a simple timeline
Read the profile and your conversations as a timeline. Note the stated name, general location, occupation, education, relationship status, hobbies, and the dates or circumstances attached to major stories. You are looking for a coherent account, not a perfect life.
- Does the claimed location fit the person’s time zone, work schedule, and ordinary availability?
- Do age, education, employment, and relationship details remain stable from one conversation to the next?
- Do the photos appear to come from a similar period, or do they show unexplained changes in age, setting, or appearance?
- Does the person explain ordinary gaps in communication without inventing a new crisis each time?
Write down questions privately if that helps you remember. Do not turn the interaction into an interrogation or announce every check you are performing. The aim is to notice whether information stays plausible over time.

Search public information cautiously
Search the person’s name, username, occupation, and non-sensitive profile claims in a regular search engine. Add a broad location or a distinctive, non-private detail when appropriate. Compare dates, photographs, and descriptions across results.
A result under a different name, a biography that belongs to someone else, or a timeline that cannot fit the person’s stated location is a warning sign. So is a profile that appears newly created, contains only copied text, or has no independent trace when the person claims a highly public professional role. However, a sparse search result does not prove deception: many legitimate people maintain little public presence, use a nickname, or have privacy settings enabled.
Do not use search results to collect sensitive information or to expose someone’s address, relatives, or workplace. You are checking consistency, not collecting sensitive information about a stranger.
Reverse-search profile photos
How to perform the check
- Save or copy the public profile image, or take a screenshot that includes the image without private messages.
- Use a reputable reverse-image-search feature and upload the image or paste its image URL.
- Repeat with another photo, including one that appears less professionally staged.
- Inspect matches for dates, names, locations, and captions. Open the surrounding page rather than relying on a thumbnail.
The FTC and FBI specifically recommend this technique. A photograph found under another person’s name, on a stock-photo library, or in an unrelated news or social account conflicts with the claimed identity. Cropping, mirroring, filters, and low resolution can prevent a match, so a clean result is not proof that the image is original.

One photo may legitimately appear on several accounts if the person cross-posted it or if friends tagged them. Ask for context in a neutral way: “I found this image elsewhere and wanted to understand where it came from.” A credible explanation should fit the rest of the timeline and be offered without pressure.
Do not demand an intimate photograph or a picture containing an identity document as a “test.” Such requests create privacy and exploitation risks and still would not establish that the person controls the account.
Ask ordinary questions over time
The FBI advises going slowly and asking lots of questions. Good questions are ordinary and open-ended, such as how the person spends a typical workday, what they like about their neighborhood, or how a hobby became important to them. Ask similar questions on different days and let the conversation develop naturally.

Look for stable, plausible answers and a willingness to discuss normal details. Evasive replies, sudden changes in biography, elaborate explanations for why every plan fails, or answers that sound copied from a profile deserve caution. Do not expect identical wording; people remember events differently. The concern is a pattern that never settles into a coherent story.

Never ask for security-question answers, account recovery codes, banking information, a full birth date, or scans of identity documents. Verification should not require you to become vulnerable to identity theft.
Use a live video conversation as one check
A short, live video conversation can help you see whether the person you have been messaging is present and whether their manner and story are broadly consistent. Arrange it at a time you choose, use a neutral background, and end the call if you feel uncomfortable.
Video is not authentication. Someone else may appear on camera, a recording may be used, or an online contact may still misrepresent their name, location, intentions, or relationship status. The CFTC describes romance scams in which people communicate for a long time without ever appearing in person or on video, so a successful call should not override contradictory evidence.
Repeated refusal to make any live contact, especially when paired with urgent excuses or a push for money, is a significant warning sign. A single request to postpone can have a legitimate explanation; evaluate the pattern and whether the person proposes a reasonable alternative.
Recognize pressure, evasion, and financial manipulation
Scammers often create urgency or emotional dependency before asking for a benefit. The following behaviors are especially concerning when they occur together:
- A fast push to leave the platform, switch to encrypted or disappearing messages, or keep the relationship secret.
- Repeated avoidance of a normal meeting, phone call, or video conversation while promising that it will happen soon.
- Contradictory names, locations, jobs, family stories, or photographs.
- Attempts to isolate you from friends, family, or anyone who asks reasonable questions.
- Requests for money, gift cards, cryptocurrency, wire transfers, account access, financial information, or help “investing.”
- Requests for intimate images, followed by threats, leverage, or a demand for payment.
- Anger, guilt, love-bombing, or an emergency story when you say no or ask for time.
A single clue can have an innocent explanation. Pressure plus contradictions is different from an isolated oddity. You do not need courtroom-level proof to pause, block, or cancel a meeting. Your discomfort is sufficient reason to stop.

Never send money or invest at an online contact’s request
The FTC’s February 2025 consumer alert states: “Never send money or gifts to a love interest you haven’t met in person.” The advice applies even when the person says the money is for travel, medical care, a family emergency, customs fees, a business opportunity, or a temporary loan. Do not trade or invest because someone known only online urges you to do so; the CFTC gives the same warning for financial solicitations.
Romance scams can produce substantial losses. An FTC publication reports $1.14 billion in reported romance-scam losses and median reported losses of $2,000 per person. The underlying reporting period is not confirmed in the available publication record, so these figures should not be read as a current-year estimate or as the total amount actually lost.
If money has already been sent, stop further payments and preserve messages, receipts, usernames, wallet addresses, telephone numbers, and transaction records. Contact the payment provider or bank immediately to ask whether a transfer can be reversed. Do not pay a supposed “recovery” service that promises to retrieve the funds for an upfront fee.

Limit identifying details
Use the platform’s messaging until you have a reason to move elsewhere. Review what your public profile reveals about your surname, employer, neighborhood, regular venues, family members, and travel plans. Avoid posting a real-time schedule or announcing that you will be away from home.
Keep separate passwords and enable multi-factor authentication on your email and social accounts. Never share a one-time login code, even if the person claims to be helping you verify an account. Consider whether photos show your street sign, house number, vehicle registration, work badge, or other location clues.
Keep a trusted person informed
Tell a friend or family member that you are getting to know someone online. Share enough context for an outside person to recognize a sudden change in behavior. A trusted person can notice contradictions that are easy to rationalize when you are emotionally invested.

Plan a safer first meeting
Choose the conditions yourself
- Meet only when you genuinely feel ready; pressure is a reason to postpone.
- Select a busy public place with staff and other people, such as a café, museum, or restaurant. Avoid either person’s home, a hotel room, or an isolated outdoor location for an early meeting.
- Arrange your own transportation in both directions. Do not depend on the new contact for a ride, and do not reveal your home address as a pickup point.
- Meet during a time when you can leave easily. Keep your phone charged and carry enough money or a working payment method for the trip home.
- Tell your trusted contact where you are, who you are meeting, and when you will check in. Use location sharing only if you understand who can access it and for how long.
- Set an exit plan before arriving. You can leave because the conversation feels wrong, the person ignores a boundary, or you simply changed your mind.
Do not let politeness trap you. If the person insists on changing the venue, isolates you from the public area, takes your phone, pressures you to drink or use drugs, or ignores a stated limit, leave and contact someone you trust or local emergency services if you are in immediate danger.
Understand what safety planning can do
Public meetings, independent transportation, check-ins, and exit plans reduce exposure to common risks; they cannot guarantee safety. Responsibility for harassment, assault, coercion, or fraud belongs to the person who commits it, not to you for agreeing to meet or for missing a precaution. RAINN’s safer-dating guidance emphasizes both practical planning and your right to set boundaries.
What to do when the evidence does not fit
Pause instead of debating
If photos, names, locations, or stories conflict, stop making plans while you assess. Ask one clear, non-accusatory question if you want an explanation, then observe whether the answer is specific, consistent, and free of pressure. You do not need to persuade the person to admit anything.
End contact when the pattern is unsafe
Block the account if the person pressures you, requests money, threatens you, repeatedly evades basic verification, or makes you feel unsafe. Save evidence before blocking if you may need to report it. Do not announce that you are reporting them or continue talking in hopes of obtaining a confession.
Report the account and suspected fraud
Use the platform’s reporting process for impersonation, harassment, extortion, solicitation, or suspected scams. The FTC accepts reports of suspected fraud. The FBI directs people to the Internet Crime Complaint Center for romance-scam reports. If intimate images are used to threaten you, contact local law enforcement and a support organization familiar with image-based abuse. If you face immediate physical danger, call your local emergency number.
A practical decision framework
Before agreeing to meet, review the following four dimensions. They are screening questions, not a numerical score or identity guarantee.
| Dimension | Reassuring evidence | Reasons to slow down or stop |
|---|---|---|
| Identity consistency | Name, location, photos, and biography remain coherent across time and sources. | Images or details appear under another identity, or major facts keep changing. |
| Communication | The person answers ordinary questions and accepts a reasonable pace. | They evade every normal question, become angry, or rush intimacy and secrecy. |
| Verification behavior | They can arrange ordinary voice or video contact without controlling the conditions. | They repeatedly avoid live contact or use each delay to demand trust or money. |
| Boundary response | They accept “no,” public plans, independent transportation, and a trusted-person check-in. | They isolate you, change plans without agreement, or punish you for setting limits. |
If any dimension raises a serious concern, postpone the meeting. Multiple concerns, a financial request, or coercive behavior justify ending contact rather than attempting another verification step.

Common mistakes to avoid
- Treating a clean reverse-image search as proof: images can be new, private, altered, or stolen without an indexed match.
- Assuming a video call authenticates a person: it shows only that someone appeared on camera at that moment.
- Sharing more information to “prove” trust: sensitive details increase your exposure and do not establish theirs.
- Letting sunk time override warning signs: a long conversation does not create an obligation to meet or send money.
- Meeting privately to avoid embarrassment: privacy removes the witnesses and easy exit that make an initial meeting safer.
- Confronting a suspected scammer for closure: continued contact gives them another chance to pressure or manipulate you.
Bottom line
Verify by accumulation: compare profile details and photos, search for contradictions, ask normal questions over time, and consider a live video call. Then judge the person’s response to boundaries and your own level of comfort. None of these checks proves identity. A first meeting should happen only on your terms, in public, with independent transportation and a trusted person informed. Never send money, gifts, financial information, or investments to someone you have only met online.
