Do not send money or cryptocurrency until you have independently verified the legal entity, authorization, exact service, payment destination and risk disclosures. Russian-language marketing proves only the language being used; it does not establish Russian jurisdiction, a valid license or an honest offer. The safest approach is to treat every promotion as an unverified claim and work through a documented check before you fund an account, follow a signal or pay an adviser.
Why language and polished presentation prove nothing
A crypto offer can be written in Russian while the company is incorporated elsewhere, unauthorized in every relevant jurisdiction or impersonating a real firm. A professional website, Telegram channel, copied regulator logo, celebrity photograph, “auditor” badge or stream of positive reviews can all be fabricated. The Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) warns that scammers use celebrity images and professional-looking sites, and that prices and returns may be manipulated.

The Bank of Russia reported about 9,000 fraudulent projects and organizations in 2024. Growth was concentrated in online and Telegram schemes that offered illegal investments and accepted cryptocurrency payments. That figure is a warning about the scale of the problem, not proof that every Russian-language service is fraudulent. Your decision must rest on independently checkable facts about the particular provider.
What to capture before you investigate
Save the offer exactly as you received it. Pages can change and social-media posts can disappear, so preserve evidence before asking the promoter questions.

- Genuine Check: confirm your signer is authentic during setup with the Ledger Wallet app.
- Protect your signer: keep it in mint condition at all times with a bespoke Pod or Case to avoid scratches and everyday wear and tear.
- The promoter’s exact public name, spelling and any transliteration.
- The registered legal entity, registration number, country and address claimed in the documents.
- The domain name, every relevant subdomain, social-media handle and adviser’s name.
- The precise product: personal advice, managed investment, trading signals, brokerage, exchange, custody, a token sale, lending or something else.
- The wallet address, bank details, payment processor and name of the recipient shown at checkout.
- Every promise about returns, guarantees, time periods, liquidity, insurance and risks.
- Contracts, fee schedules, privacy terms, withdrawal rules, screenshots, chat exports, recordings and account statements.
Keep the original files and note when and where you obtained them. A changed domain or a payment account that does not match the legal entity can become important evidence.
Step-by-step verification workflow
1. Identify the legal entity, not just the brand
Write down the full legal name exactly as it appears in the contract, invoice or regulatory record. A trading name, Telegram username or app name is not a legal identity. Match the registration number, registered address, telephone number and domain across independent records. Look for inconsistencies in spelling, company suffixes, country and ownership.
If the promoter refuses to provide a legal entity or says that a “decentralized team” does not need one while taking investment funds, stop. You cannot meaningfully check authorization, complaints or recovery options without an identifiable counterparty.

Use the Bank of Russia Financial Organizations Directory and search by the exact legal name and domain. Also search its warning list. The regulator says that most financial services require a Bank of Russia license or inclusion in a relevant register; an absent authorization generally means the provider is operating illegally.
Use the regulator’s own site rather than a link supplied by the promoter. Type the address yourself, because a copied logo or a look-alike page can lead to a false result. Save the search result and the date you checked it.
3. Confirm that the authorization covers the service being sold
A genuine registration is not a universal approval. A company authorized for one activity is not automatically permitted to provide crypto investment management, individualized advice, trading signals, brokerage, exchange or custody. Read the record’s permitted activity and compare it with the actual pitch.

For example, a registration that covers payments does not by itself authorize discretionary portfolio management. An exchange authorization does not prove that a person selling “guaranteed” returns is licensed to advise you. If the service description is vague, ask the provider to identify the exact legal basis and authorization for that activity; verify the answer independently.

If the provider says it is regulated abroad, identify the named legal entity and jurisdiction, then enter the foreign regulator’s address manually. Search both the regulator’s register and its warning list. The FCA specifically recommends checking overseas regulators when dealing with overseas firms.
Compare the register entry with the offer’s legal name, domain, phone number, address and permitted services. A small spelling difference, an extra word in the domain or a different company number can indicate impersonation. Registration alone is not a guarantee: the Commodity Futures Trading Commission and Securities and Exchange Commission warn that relying on registration alone will not protect you from fraud, although most scams involve unregistered entities, people or products.
5. Test the economics before discussing technology
Put every return claim into numbers. Ask what asset produces the return, over what period, with what fees, leverage, drawdown and liquidity limits. Compare the claim with market conditions without accepting a promoter’s chart as evidence.
Guaranteed or unusually high returns, “no risk” language and returns several times above market levels are stop signals. The Bank of Russia identifies high or guaranteed returns, aggressive online advertising, unclear activity and absence from its registers as common pyramid indicators. No legitimate explanation of volatility should be replaced by a promise that losses are impossible.

Urgency is another economic warning. “Today only,” a countdown timer, a limited allocation or a demand that you borrow and add funds prevents a rational assessment. Stop when the promoter tells you to increase a deposit, borrow, pay to recover losses or recruit others to maintain your payout.

6. Follow the money and the custody arrangement
Inspect where funds are supposed to go and who controls the assets afterward. A payment to a personal bank card, personal wallet or an account unrelated to the registered entity is a major warning. The Bank of Russia cautions about direct payments to individuals and unverifiable projects.
Ask for a plain-language explanation of custody:
- Who holds the private keys or controls the exchange account?
- Can you withdraw directly, or must every withdrawal be approved by an intermediary?
- Are client assets segregated from the company’s operating funds?
- What network and address will receive a withdrawal, and how are address changes authenticated?
- Which fees apply, and are they disclosed before you deposit?
Never treat an advance “tax,” “unlock,” “verification,” “insurance” or “withdrawal” fee as normal. The CFTC and SEC identify advance-fee fraud in which a victim must pay more before supposed profits or funds are released. A demand for another payment after you ask to withdraw is a reason to stop, not a reason to send a smaller amount.
7. Verify evidence rather than testimonials
Screenshots of profitable trades, Telegram success stories and review pages do not establish that a service is authorized or profitable. Images can be edited, accounts can be simulated and testimonials can be purchased. Celebrity endorsements are especially weak evidence; the FCA notes that scammers use celebrity imagery to create trust.
Ask for independently auditable information: a legal entity that matches the register, a contract naming the counterparty, a complete fee schedule, a clear custody model and records that a qualified independent party can verify. A referral code, the promoter’s own “auditor” logo or a support contact supplied in the same chat is not independent verification.
8. Pause and obtain an independent review
Do not let the promoter set your deadline. Close the chat, save the evidence and review the offer with an independent adviser who is properly authorized for the relevant service. Do not use a person recommended by the promoter or anyone paid for bringing you into the scheme.
For a major decision, ask the independent adviser to check the legal entity, authorization scope, custody, withdrawal controls, conflicts, complaints process and compensation arrangements. If those checks cannot be completed, the rational decision is not to fund the offer.

9. Preserve evidence and report suspected illegality
Keep chats, voice recordings where lawful, URLs, wallet addresses, transaction IDs, receipts, bank confirmations, contracts and account statements. Export conversations instead of relying on an online history that can be deleted. Do not edit screenshots; retain the original files and record dates and time zones.
Report suspected illegal activity to the Bank of Russia and law enforcement. Include the legal name used, domains and handles, payment instructions, wallet addresses, transaction identifiers, amounts, dates and copies of the communications. Prompt reporting may help connect your case to other complaints even when recovery is uncertain.
Red flags that should end the conversation
- “Guaranteed” yield or returns several times above market levels.
- Claims that there is little or no risk.
- Unsolicited contact, countdowns or pressure to act immediately.
- Requests to borrow, increase the deposit or pay to recover losses.
- No clear legal entity, financial statements, custody explanation or verifiable business activity.
- Payment to a personal card, personal wallet or an account unrelated to the registered entity.
- An advance fee before a withdrawal or release of supposed profits.
- Fake reviews, celebrity imagery, copied regulator logos or a domain that differs from the registered entity.
One red flag may be explainable; several together are not a puzzle you need to solve. Stop communicating and preserve the evidence.
How to compare two apparently legitimate services
If two providers survive the basic checks, compare them on the same facts rather than on marketing language.
| Comparison point | What to verify |
|---|---|
| Regulator and jurisdiction | The regulator, country and register entry for the exact legal entity and domain. |
| Legal identity | Registration number, address, telephone number and ownership details that match across records. |
| Permitted service | Whether the authorization covers advice, brokerage, custody, exchange or the specific activity advertised. |
| Custody and withdrawals | Who controls assets, whether client funds are segregated, withdrawal approvals and address-change controls. |
| Fees and conflicts | All commissions, spreads, performance fees, referral payments and conflicts disclosed before funding. |
| Complaints and compensation | The formal complaints route and any compensation or investor-protection arrangement that actually applies. |
| Security | Account authentication, transaction confirmations, access controls and incident procedures. |
| Evidence for claims | Independently auditable records rather than screenshots, testimonials or unverifiable charts. |
A provider that cannot answer one of these questions clearly should not receive your funds, even if its website and social channels look credible.

Language is not jurisdiction
Russian text can target readers in many countries. The applicable rules depend on the provider’s legal entity, where it operates, what service it supplies and where the customer is located. Do not infer Russian authorization from language, a Russian-speaking adviser or a ruble payment option.

A token or wallet address is not a business identity
Blockchain transfers can show where assets went, but a wallet address does not prove who controls it, whether the recipient is licensed or whether the promised service exists. Record the address and transaction ID for verification and reporting; do not treat on-chain visibility as due diligence.
An audit label is not investment approval
An audit logo may refer only to code, reserves at one moment or an unrelated company. Determine who performed the work, what was tested, the date, the scope and whether the legal entity and service you are considering are covered. None of that replaces regulator and contract checks.
If you already sent money or cryptocurrency
- Stop sending additional funds, including any fee described as tax, insurance, unlocking or recovery.
- Save chats, emails, websites, wallet addresses, transaction IDs, receipts and account statements immediately.
- Contact your bank, card issuer or exchange through its official support channel and ask what recall, freeze or fraud-reporting options remain.
- Secure accounts that may have been exposed: change passwords, revoke unfamiliar sessions and enable strong multi-factor authentication. Do not share seed phrases or remote-access codes with anyone claiming to help.
- Report the suspected operation to the Bank of Russia and law enforcement with a chronological evidence package.
- Be skeptical of “recovery” agents who contact you after the loss and demand an upfront payment. Advance-fee fraud often continues after the first transfer.
Do not delete the original conversation because it is embarrassing or appears useless. Details that seem minor, such as a changed domain or a second wallet, can connect the operation to other cases.

Proceed only when all five answers are independently documented: Who is the legal entity? Which regulator authorizes it? Does that authorization cover this exact service? Where will the money go and how can you withdraw? What evidence supports the return claim and risks? If any answer is missing, inconsistent or supplied only by the promoter, do not invest.
The FCA’s consumer warning is deliberately blunt: “You should be prepared to lose all the money you invest in crypto.” Treat that as a risk-management instruction, not as permission to skip verification. Verification cannot make a volatile asset safe, but it can prevent you from handing funds to an unidentified or unauthorized operator.
