Match the recipient committee, date, amount, location, and employer or occupation, then open the underlying filing and check for amendments, corrections, or refunds.
An FEC entry shows what a federally registered committee reported. It is not, by itself, independent proof of the donor’s identity, political motive, or the amount the committee ultimately kept. Recent filings can also appear after a delay, and state or local donations may be outside the FEC system.

What an FEC record proves—and what it does not
The Federal Election Commission (FEC) publishes itemized contributions that federally registered political committees report. The commission describes its Individual Contributions resource this way: “The Commission maintains a database of individuals who have made contributions to federally registered political committees.” That makes the database a strong starting point for checking whether a disclosure exists, but it does not turn every database match into independently verified fact.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
| What the record can establish | What it cannot establish on its own |
|---|---|
| A committee reported receiving a contribution associated with a named individual. | That the person with the matching name is the person in the online claim. |
| The reported recipient committee, transaction date, amount, and available identifying fields. | The donor’s motive, political beliefs, or reason for giving. |
| Whether the committee later filed an amendment, correction, or refund entry. | That the committee ultimately retained the original amount without reviewing later filings. |
| That a disclosure falls within the federal campaign-finance system. | That a state or local campaign, ballot committee, or municipal race was reported to the FEC. |
Use careful wording. “The committee reported a contribution from a person with this name” accurately describes a database result. “This person donated this amount” is stronger and requires enough matching context to rule out plausible namesakes, plus a review of later records.

Define the claim before opening the database
Write down the allegation exactly as it appears online. Separate facts stated by the post from details you still need to test. This prevents the search from quietly assuming that the claim is correct.
- Record the complete name. Preserve middle initials, suffixes, alternate spellings, accents, and hyphenation. Note whether the post uses a legal name, professional name, or nickname.
- Identify the alleged recipient. Determine whether the claim concerns a candidate committee, a political party, a political action committee (PAC), or another federally registered committee. “Donated to a candidate” is not interchangeable with a contribution to the candidate’s party or to a PAC.
- Capture the date and amount. An approximate month, election cycle, or report period is still useful. Treat the date and amount as search clues, not as verified facts.
- Clarify the geographic and legal scope. Decide whether the claim concerns a federal office or a state, county, municipal, or local race. Only the federal portion belongs in an FEC search.
- Collect corroborating details from the claim. City, state, employer, occupation, business affiliation, or a public biography can help distinguish people with common names. Keep these as comparison points, not proof.
Search the FEC individual-contribution records
Open the individual-contribution search
Use the FEC’s Individual Contributions search and begin with the contributor’s name. Add the recipient committee when the claim identifies one. Then narrow the results with the fields the FEC makes available, such as city, state, transaction date, amount, occupation, employer, and committee.
Search broadly first if the name is uncommon. For a common name, add one discriminator at a time so you can see which filter removes or preserves plausible matches. A search that returns no result is not conclusive if the filing is recent, the name was entered differently, or the activity was reported to a state rather than federal authority.
Understand the searchable fields
| Field | How to use it | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Contributor name | Try the exact spelling, then reasonable variants such as a missing middle initial or a reversed surname. | A name-only result can represent a different person. |
| Recipient committee | Confirm whether the committee is the candidate, party, PAC, or another entity named in the claim. | Similar committee names can belong to different organizations or election cycles. |
| Transaction date | Compare the reported date with the alleged date and the surrounding report period. | A post may use a public event date rather than the filing’s transaction date. |
| Amount | Check the exact reported amount and whether multiple entries could add up to the figure in the claim. | A summary total is not evidence of one specific transaction. |
| City and state | Compare the contributor’s listed location with the person described in the claim. | Addresses can change, be incomplete, or be entered inconsistently. |
| Occupation or employer | Use the field as a second or third identity check, especially for common names. | For reports filed before 2003, the FEC notes that occupation searches use the employer field. Do not assume older labels have the same meaning as newer records. |
Save the search parameters and the result details as you work. A later amendment can change what appears in a current view, and recording the original query makes your verification reproducible.

Decide whether a matching result is really the person named
Do not collapse several similar-name records into one identity. Compare independent details and describe unresolved conflicts.
Use a multiple-field match
A strong match usually aligns on the recipient committee, transaction date, amount, city or state, and employer or occupation. You do not need every field to agree, but you should explain any mismatch. For example, a different city may be expected after a move, while a different occupation and state may indicate a namesake.
| Comparison | What alignment suggests | What a mismatch requires |
|---|---|---|
| Recipient committee | The filing concerns the same candidate or organization described in the claim. | Check whether the claim actually referred to a party, PAC, or similarly named committee. |
| Transaction date and report period | The timing is consistent with the alleged donation. | Explain whether the post used an event date, a contribution date, or a filing date. |
| Reported amount | The number in the claim corresponds to one entry or a clearly documented set of entries. | Do not add unrelated contributions merely to reach the claimed total. |
| City and state | The contributor’s listed location supports the identification. | Look for another person with the same name in the claimed location. |
| Employer or occupation | The record is consistent with biographical information in the claim. | Mark the identity as uncertain when the field conflicts or is blank. |
Use confidence language that matches the evidence
- Confirmed as a reported match: Several identifying fields align, the recipient is correct, and the underlying filing supports the entry.
- Possible match: The name and one or two details align, but another person could plausibly fit.
- Not substantiated in the FEC data: No matching federal record appears after reasonable searches, or the available record points to a different recipient or person.
- Outside FEC scope: The claim concerns a state or local committee, or another activity that is not a federal filing.
These labels describe the record search, not a legal finding about whether a person did or did not give money.

- Identify the report. Note the committee, report type, coverage dates, filing date, and the page or schedule where the contribution appears.
- Check whether it is original or amended. An amended filing can replace or correct information from an original submission. Use the latest relevant filing when describing the committee’s current disclosure, while preserving the original if the change itself matters.
- Distinguish processed data from the document. The FEC explains that its data undergoes categorization and coding. A processed database row is useful for searching, but the filed document is the source for the committee’s reported entry and surrounding context.
- Review later filings. Search subsequent reports for a correction, redesignation, reattribution, or refund connected with the contribution.
- Check broader committee records when relevant. FEC research checklists include filed documents, itemized individual contributions, summary figures, audits, enforcement actions, litigation, and advisory opinions. These records can reveal why a committee’s disclosure changed or whether a broader compliance issue affects interpretation.
When publishing, retain the committee name and report period with the transaction. A bare screenshot or isolated database row is harder for readers to audit than a report identified by committee and filing.
Separate the reported receipt from the final amount
A contribution entry can be followed by a refund or correction. The original receipt and the amount ultimately retained are different questions.
| Record event | What you may say | What you should not assume |
|---|---|---|
| Original contribution entry | The committee reported receiving the stated amount on the stated date. | That the committee kept the entire amount permanently. |
| Amended contribution entry | The committee later changed or corrected the disclosure. | That the first version remains the current account of the transaction. |
| Refund entry | The records show a refund, and you can report its amount and date separately. | That the original contribution should still be described as a net receipt. |
| Adjusted-receipts summary | The FEC’s methodology subtracts contribution refunds and other categories from total receipts. | That a summary figure proves the status of one donor’s transaction. |
If a claim says someone “gave” a specific amount, report the original contribution and then state any documented refund or correction. Do not convert a committee-wide adjusted-receipts number into a donor-level conclusion.
Account for filing and processing delays
Recent activity may not be visible immediately. The FEC’s public-record guidance says required filings are available for public inspection within 48 hours of receipt, or within 24 hours for electronically filed material. Those are agency-described availability periods, not guarantees that every search field is already complete.

The filing search also explains that categorization and coding can take days for electronic filings and weeks for paper filings. A contribution may therefore appear in a filed document before all searchable fields are fully processed.
- Record the date and time of your first search.
- Check whether the committee files electronically or on paper when that information is available.
- If the alleged transaction is recent, save the current result and repeat the search after additional processing time.
- State the search date in your notes or article so readers understand that a later filing could change the result.
Do not present an absence from a very recent search as proof that no contribution occurred.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Know when the FEC is the wrong database
FEC records cover federally registered committees and federal campaign-finance activity. A donation to a state legislative candidate, governor, mayor, county committee, or state ballot organization may be disclosed under that jurisdiction’s rules instead.

When the claim is state or local, identify the relevant state election office or local disclosure system and search there. The FEC’s public-record guidance directs users to state offices for records that are not filed federally.
Best Value
Online historical coverage also varies by filer type. The FEC’s public-record guide lists different online start dates and directs people seeking older material to the Public Records Office. If a claim concerns an early election cycle, do not infer that a missing online result means no filing ever existed.
Illustrative verification example
Imagine a post stating that “Jordan Lee donated $2,500 to Candidate A in June.” The name is common, and the post does not identify a city or committee.
- Write the allegation as “possible $2,500 federal contribution, June, Candidate A,” without treating any part as established.
- Search the individual-contribution database for Jordan Lee and Candidate A. If multiple committees use similar names, identify the exact recipient committee.
- Compare every returned entry’s amount, transaction date, city, state, and employer or occupation. Suppose one result is $2,500 in June but lists a different state and employer from the person in the post. That is a possible match, not a confirmed identity.
- Open the committee filing that contains the entry. Check whether the report is original or amended and whether a later report records a refund or correction.
- Write the outcome narrowly: “A federally registered committee reported a $2,500 contribution from a Jordan Lee in June. The public record lists [the available location and occupation details], which do not establish that this is the Jordan Lee named in the post,” if the identity remains unresolved.
This example is a method, not a claim about a real donor. The point is to keep the committee’s disclosure separate from an unsupported conclusion about identity.
Common mistakes and how to correct them
- Searching only the name: Add recipient, date, location, and employer or occupation. If those fields are unavailable, label the match as uncertain.
- Treating a candidate, party, and PAC as the same recipient: Verify the committee’s legal identity and type in the filing.
- Using the post’s date as the filing date: Compare transaction date, report period, and filing date separately.
- Stopping at the first result: Review all plausible same-name records before selecting one.
- Ignoring amendments: Check original and amended filings and use the current relevant version.
- Calling the receipt final: Search later reports for refunds, corrections, redesignations, or reattributions.
- Using summary totals as donor evidence: Return to the itemized transaction and the adjusted-receipts methodology.
- Declaring “no donation” immediately after a recent event: Allow for the FEC’s availability and processing periods, then recheck.
- Assuming all political donations are federal: Send state and local claims to the appropriate state or local election office.
- Publishing personal data beyond what is needed: Use only the identifying details necessary to explain the match and follow applicable law and FEC restrictions.
Use the FEC records responsibly
The FEC cautions that public-record material is not intended to replace or change the law. Treat the database as a disclosure source, not as a complete adjudication of a person’s conduct.
The FEC also describes statutory restrictions on selling contributor information or using it for commercial solicitation. A verification project should use the records to answer the specific public-interest claim, not to build a marketing list or republish unnecessary personal information.
Quick Recap
Final publication checklist
- Have you copied the person’s name exactly and tested reasonable spelling variants?
- Did you identify the exact recipient committee rather than relying on a candidate or party label?
- Did you compare transaction date, amount, city, state, and employer or occupation where available?
- Did you open the underlying filing and record its report period and filing status?
- Did you check amended filings and later refund or correction entries?
- Did you distinguish the reported receipt from any net or adjusted total?
- Did you account for the FEC’s 24-hour electronic and 48-hour general availability statements, plus longer processing times?
- Did you send state or local claims to the relevant state election office?
- Does your wording say exactly what the record establishes, without inferring identity or motive beyond the evidence?
- Have you noted the search date so a later filing can be evaluated?
