How to verify npm package provenance before installing a dependency

To verify npm package provenance, install the dependency with npm 9.5.0 or later, run npm audit signatures, and then inspect the package’s provenance details on npmjs.com. Confirm that the repository, source commit, workflow, build file, publisher and transparency-log entry all describe the package you intended to install. A successful check shows how a package was signed and built; it does not prove that the code is harmless, so review the linked source and build instructions and run a separate vulnerability audit.

What npm provenance tells you

Npm provenance is supply-chain evidence that connects a published package with the source code and build instructions used to create it. The attestation is generated from the package’s build environment, while a publish attestation records publication to the registry by an authorized user. Together, these records help answer a question that package metadata alone cannot: where did this exact artifact come from, and how was it produced?

Npm describes provenance as “a verifiable link to the package’s source code and build instructions, which developers can then audit and determine whether to trust it or not.” That wording is important. Provenance gives you an auditable chain; it is not a safety certificate or a claim that the package contains no malicious code.

The practical verification has two parts:

  • Automated verification: the npm CLI checks registry signatures and available provenance attestations for packages you downloaded.
  • Human review: the npmjs.com package page exposes the build and source links so you can decide whether the publisher, repository, commit and workflow make sense.

Use both. A command can validate signatures without telling you whether a maintainer intentionally shipped dangerous behavior, and a web page can show a plausible repository without proving that the downloaded tarball is the one represented by that repository.

Prerequisites and the correct order

The provenance-verification documentation requires npm CLI 9.5.0 or later for npm audit signatures. Npm’s audit documentation also recommends using the latest CLI because attestation formats and verification support can evolve. Npm’s separate registry-signature documentation lists CLI 8.15.0 or later for signature verification, but the combined signature-and-provenance workflow has the newer 9.5.0 prerequisite.

Check the version before installing or auditing:

npm --version

If the result is older than 9.5.0, update npm using the supported method for your Node.js installation, then open a new shell and check again. The command’s result also depends on the registry from which packages are downloaded; the registry must expose signatures and attestations in a format the CLI understands.

For a project with a committed lockfile, use the reproducible install command:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
npm ci

Use npm install when you are intentionally resolving or changing dependencies. In either case, run the signature audit after the install has completed, because the audit examines packages that were actually downloaded.

Run the automated provenance check

Basic command

From the project directory, after installing dependencies, run:

npm audit signatures

A passing result means the CLI verified the registry signatures and provenance attestations available for the downloaded packages under the registry’s supported signature conventions. It does not mean every package has an attestation, that every source repository is safe, or that no vulnerability exists.

Capture machine-readable evidence

For CI logs, archival evidence or a policy check, request JSON output with the attestation material:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
npm audit signatures --json --include-attestations

The JSON form can include attestation bundles, verification material and transparency-log entries. Store the output with the build record if your organization needs to show what was verified at install time. Treat the output as build evidence rather than as a replacement for source review.

Read failures instead of suppressing them

A failure can indicate an invalid signature, an unavailable or unverifiable attestation, an unsupported registry response, or a package that lacks a required signature. Do not convert a nonzero exit status into success merely to keep a build moving. First determine whether the configured registry supports signatures. Npm’s signature-verification guidance says the CLI errors when packages lack signatures in a registry context where signatures are supported; the same missing-signature message has a different meaning when the registry does not provide that capability.

Record the package name, version, registry URL and complete error text. Then check whether the package was fetched from the registry you expected, whether a proxy rewrote the response, and whether your npm CLI is current. If the registry does not support the relevant signatures, document that limitation and perform the manual provenance review instead of claiming that verification succeeded.

Inspect provenance on npmjs.com

Automated verification is only the first gate. Open the package’s page on npmjs.com and select the version you installed. A green check mark beside the version indicates that provenance information is available. Open the provenance details and inspect every linked element rather than accepting the check mark at face value.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Build environment and workflow

Identify the build environment and the workflow run that produced the artifact. The workflow should belong to the expected project and use build instructions that match the repository. Look for an unexpected workflow, an unrelated organization or a build description that does not explain how the package is assembled.

  • [Dont Hesite to Order] 24 hours customer services and professional technology team are standing by

Source repository and commit

Follow the repository link and verify that it is the project you intended to use. Check the source commit recorded in the attestation, not merely the repository’s current default branch. The commit should be present in the expected repository and should contain the package version or release change you are evaluating.

Npm checks the linked repository and source commit when provenance details are opened. If it cannot establish that relationship—for example, because the repository was deleted or made private—it displays a warning. A warning is a reason to pause and investigate, not evidence that the package is malicious.

Build file

Review the build file or build configuration named by the attestation. Confirm that it invokes the expected package build and publish steps, uses the intended source directory, and does not introduce an unexplained download, generated artifact or alternate repository. Provenance tells you which instructions ran; you still have to judge those instructions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Transparency-log entry

Open the public transparency-log record linked from the details. Check that the package, version and attestation data correspond to the artifact you downloaded. A transparency-log entry provides publicly auditable verification material, but it does not independently certify the quality of the source.

Use a consistency checklist

Before adding an unfamiliar dependency to a production project, answer these questions:

  • Does the package name and version exactly match the dependency in your manifest and lockfile?
  • Is the repository controlled by the publisher or organization you expected?
  • Does the attested source commit exist in that repository and contain the relevant release?
  • Does the workflow run belong to that repository rather than an unrelated fork or account?
  • Does the build file explain how source becomes the published package?
  • Does the transparency-log record identify the same package and attestation?
  • Is the publisher authorized to release the package, and does the publication path fit the project’s normal practice?
  • Are warnings explained by a known repository or publishing change?

If any answer is unclear, defer installation in a sensitive environment. Download the package only in an isolated review environment, compare the source commit with the published contents, and ask the maintainer for clarification through a trusted project channel.

What a successful provenance result proves—and what it does not

What it establishes

  • The registry signatures and available attestations for the downloaded packages were cryptographically checked by the npm CLI.
  • The attestation can link the package to source code and build instructions from its build environment.
  • A publish attestation can show registry publication by an authorized user.
  • The provenance page can expose a workflow, source commit, build file and transparency-log record for human inspection.

What it cannot establish

  • It does not prove that the source code is benign or free of intentional malicious behavior.
  • It does not prove that the project’s dependencies, install scripts or build tooling are safe.
  • It does not replace review of the linked source and build instructions.
  • It does not show that a package has no known vulnerabilities.
  • It does not automatically make a package trustworthy when the repository, publisher or workflow is inconsistent with your expectations.

Npm explicitly cautions that established provenance does not guarantee the absence of malicious code. The final trust decision remains yours: inspect what was built, why it was built, and whether the publisher is one you are prepared to trust.

Provenance versus vulnerability auditing

These npm commands answer different questions and should be used together:

Check Question it answers Evidence examined Important limitation
npm audit signatures Were the downloaded packages’ registry signatures and available provenance attestations verified? Registry signatures, provenance attestations and, with JSON options, attestation and transparency-log material. Requires compatible CLI and registry support; does not establish that code is safe.
npm audit Does the dependency tree match publicly reported vulnerability information? Known vulnerability advisories for project dependencies. Does not establish where a package was built or who published it.
npmjs.com provenance details Do the package’s publisher, repository, commit, workflow and build instructions make sense? Human-readable build environment, workflow, source commit, build file and transparency-log links. Human review cannot prove that the source itself is harmless.

Run the vulnerability check separately:

npm audit

A clean vulnerability report is not provenance evidence. Conversely, successful signature verification is not a vulnerability-free certificate. Keep both results in the project’s security record.

How to interpret missing provenance

Not every package will have provenance. Npm provenance depends on supported publishing arrangements, including supported cloud CI/CD providers. A package without provenance may be older, published through an unsupported path, or maintained by a project that has not enabled attestations. Missing provenance is therefore a gap in evidence, not automatic proof of an attack.

Handle the gap proportionally:

  1. Confirm that you are using npm 9.5.0 or later and the intended registry.
  2. Check whether the registry supports signatures and attestations. Review the exact CLI error rather than treating an unsupported feature as a successful check.
  3. Open the package page and look for publisher, repository and release information that can be independently compared with the project’s official documentation.
  4. Review the package source, release history, install scripts and dependency changes in an isolated environment.
  5. For high-impact software, ask the maintainer whether provenance is unavailable because of a known publishing arrangement and record the explanation.

Npm’s trusted-publishing documentation describes publishing arrangements that can be used to establish stronger links between a project’s source-control workflow and registry publication: https://docs.npmjs.com/trusted-publishers/. The existence of such a workflow still does not remove the need to inspect the resulting source and build instructions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A practical review workflow for teams

At dependency introduction

  1. Record the exact package name and version proposed for adoption.
  2. Install with the project’s normal command, preferably npm ci when a lockfile is already reviewed.
  3. Run npm audit signatures and save the result.
  4. Open npmjs.com provenance details and complete the repository, commit, workflow, build-file and transparency-log checks.
  5. Run npm audit and review any known vulnerability findings separately.
  6. Approve the dependency only after documenting unresolved warnings, missing attestations or unusual publishing details.

At every update

Repeat the checks for the new version. Provenance is version-specific: a repository that was trustworthy for one release does not make a later artifact trustworthy automatically. Compare the new source commit and workflow with the previous release, and investigate a change in publisher or build process before merging the lockfile update.

In continuous integration

Use the JSON form to retain machine-readable evidence:

npm audit signatures --json --include-attestations

Fail the pipeline on verification errors when the registry is expected to support signatures. If your organization accepts packages from registries without signature support, make that exception explicit and route those packages to the manual review process instead of silently treating them as verified.

Troubleshooting common outcomes

“The command is unknown” or provenance options are rejected

Check npm --version. Upgrade to npm 9.5.0 or later, then rerun the command. An older CLI may support some registry-signature features but not the combined provenance audit.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The package has no green check mark

Do not infer an attack from the missing mark. Determine whether the package’s publishing method and registry support provenance. Then apply the manual source, publisher and release-history review, documenting that no attestation was available.

The page warns that the repository or commit cannot be established

Check whether the repository was deleted, transferred, renamed or made private. Compare the package’s publisher and release history with an official project channel. If the relationship cannot be explained, do not rely on the provenance claim for that version.

The signature audit fails for one package

Read the complete error and identify whether it concerns a missing signature, an invalid signature, an unsupported registry response or an unavailable attestation. Verify the registry configuration and package source before retrying. Never report the project as verified when one required package remains unresolved.

Signatures pass but the code looks suspicious

Stop. Cryptographic verification confirms the artifact’s signing and provenance relationships, not its intent. Review install scripts, build steps and the source commit; remove or isolate the dependency if the behavior cannot be justified.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How to make the final trust decision

Use a graduated decision rather than a single green or red indicator:

Evidence pattern Reasonable action
Signatures and provenance verify; publisher, repository, commit, workflow and build file are consistent; vulnerability review is acceptable. Proceed under your normal dependency-approval controls.
Signatures verify, but source or build instructions are unfamiliar or require unexplained network access. Perform deeper source review or seek maintainer clarification before production use.
Provenance is missing, while the registry and project publishing path do not support it. Use manual review, record the evidence gap and apply stricter isolation or approval requirements.
Signature verification fails where the registry supports signatures, or the publisher and repository relationship is inconsistent. Do not install into the target environment until the failure is explained.

The goal is not to find a magical “safe” label. It is to make the package’s origin, build path and publisher visible enough that your team can make a documented, repeatable decision.
