Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteTo verify how your site performs in Google Search, open the correct property in Google Search Console and go to Performance > Search results. Confirm the search type and date range, then read clicks, impressions, click-through rate (CTR), and average position. Use the Queries and Pages tabs—and filters for country, device, date, and search appearance—to find what caused a change. Treat averages as grouped signals, not promises about an individual searcher’s result.
Start in the right Search Console report
Search Console has several reports, but the detailed report for Google Search traffic is Search results inside the Performance section. It shows clicks, impressions, CTR, and average position for the property and search type you select.

Choose the property before reading totals
- Sign in to Google Search Console.
- Use the property selector to choose the exact site, URL-prefix property, or domain property you want to inspect.
- Open Performance, then select Search results.
- Check the search type. Web is the standard default, but the report can also represent Image, Video, or News search. Do not compare totals from different search types as if they were one dataset.
A domain property can combine multiple protocols, subdomains, and paths, while a narrower property covers only its configured URL scope. If you switch properties, the totals may change even when the date range and filters look identical.

| Metric | What it measures | How to interpret it safely |
|---|---|---|
| Total clicks | Clicks from Google services to the selected property or page grouping. | A click indicates a visit initiated from a Google result, not that the visitor read the page or completed an action. |
| Total impressions | Times a link to the site was shown or was potentially shown under the rules for that result type. | An impression does not always mean the person visibly read the listing. Some result experiences count an item when it is in the current result set; independently scrolling or expandable elements can require scrolling into view or expansion. |
| Average CTR | Clicks divided by impressions. | CTR is an aggregate for the selected scope. A high or low value does not identify which query, page, device, or country caused it until you break the data down. |
| Average position | The average reported position of the site’s result, where position 1 is the topmost position. | It is a summary across impressions, queries, URLs, devices, locations, and dates. It is not a guaranteed rank for every searcher. |
CTR can be expressed as clicks ÷ impressions. Because both counts are rounded in the interface and filtered data may be privacy-limited, a hand calculation from displayed rows may not reproduce the headline percentage exactly.
Why an impression is not always a visible view
Google applies different impression rules to different result layouts. On a conventional results page, a listing can count when it appears in the current set of results without a click to reveal it. In a widget that scrolls independently or expands, the listing may need to enter the user’s view or be expanded. Use impressions as exposure under Google’s counting rules, rather than as a confirmed human glance.
Find the searches and landing URLs behind a change
Use Queries to identify search demand
Select the Queries tab below the chart. It lists searches for which Google showed a result from the selected property. Sort by clicks to see traffic drivers, by impressions to find broad exposure, or by CTR and position to locate queries that need investigation. A query row describes Google’s recorded search wording; it does not reveal every search because privacy protections can omit or group some queries.
Use Pages to locate the URL receiving the result
Select Pages to see the landing URLs associated with the selected scope. A page can perform well for many queries, while one query can lead to several URLs. Filter to a page first when a known article, product page, or section has changed; then inspect its Queries rows to see whether the change is broad or limited to particular searches.
Apply filters before attributing a cause

- Query: an exact phrase or a query containing a term.
- Page: a specific URL or URL pattern.
- Country: the searcher’s country as reported by Google.
- Device: desktop, mobile, or tablet.
- Search appearance: a qualifying result feature, when available for the property.
- Date: a specific day or date interval.
Filter first, then compare the resulting rows. For example, a sitewide drop may actually be a mobile-only decline on one page, or a stable page may hide a loss on one high-impression query.
Set dates and compare periods without creating false trends
Choose a date range that matches the question
Open the date selector and choose a preset or custom range. A short range is useful for checking a launch or outage; a longer range is better for seasonal patterns. Check the report’s last-updated date before treating the newest days as final.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Compare equivalent periods
- Open the date selector and choose Compare.
- Select the comparison type, such as the previous period or a custom period.
- Keep the search type, property, page/query filters, country, device, and search appearance unchanged in both periods.
- Apply the comparison and inspect the chart plus the table’s Difference column.
A period comparison is meaningful only when the periods represent comparable amounts of time and the same filters. Comparing a full month with a partial month can make a normal calendar difference look like a performance change.
Reduce day-of-week noise
For a longer-term trend, change the chart aggregation to weekly or monthly where the interface offers that option. Weekly or monthly grouping reduces weekday-versus-weekend effects that can dominate a daily chart. Daily data remains useful for pinpointing a specific event after the broader trend is understood.
Understand property and page aggregation
Search Console can group results at the property level or at the individual page level. The grouping basis changes how duplicate URLs and positions are counted, so the same date range can produce different totals, CTR, and average position.

| View | How results are grouped | Why the numbers can differ |
|---|---|---|
| Property aggregation | Results to the same property are combined, and the topmost property position is reported. | Multiple URLs or versions of a result can be combined into one property-level impression and position context. |
| Page aggregation | Each unique result URL is treated separately. | One search can contribute separate rows for different URLs, changing the distribution used for CTR and average position. |
When publishing an internal report or comparing two exports, label the grouping basis explicitly. A property-level CTR should not be presented as though it were the CTR for one page.

Interpret average position as a distribution, not a rank promise
Average position is calculated across the impressions included in your selected scope. It blends different queries, locations, devices, result layouts, and URLs. Personalization, language, competition, and the searcher’s context can all make an individual result look different from the average.
Use position to answer questions such as “Did this filtered group move generally higher or lower?” Do not use it to claim that every visitor saw the page at that exact rank. A page with a position of 4.0 may have many impressions near the top and others much lower; the average does not show that distribution by itself.
Diagnose a traffic change in a repeatable order
1. Confirm the scope and data status
- Verify the property and search type.
- Check the date range, comparison period, and aggregation level.
- Read the report’s last-updated date.
- Look for a dotted line or other indication that the newest data is preliminary. Google marks preliminary data with a dotted line when selected; complete days are the default.
Recent values can change as Google completes processing. Avoid calling a one-day, preliminary movement a confirmed trend.
2. Separate exposure from response
Compare impressions and clicks together. If impressions fall, the site may be appearing less often or for fewer searches. If impressions are stable but clicks fall, CTR has changed. If clicks and impressions both rise, the site may simply be reaching more searches even if CTR is unchanged.

3. Break down by query and page
Start with Queries and Pages. Find whether a small number of rows account for most of the difference. Then filter to those rows to test whether the change is concentrated on one URL, one search theme, or many pages at once.
4. Check country and device
If query and page rows do not explain the movement, add country and device breakdowns. A mobile-only or country-specific change can be hidden by a stable sitewide average.
5. Treat CTR as a diagnostic clue
A high-impression query with low CTR may justify checking whether the page title and snippet accurately answer that search. This is a reason to investigate, not a guarantee that one edit will restore clicks. Google uses many factors when determining which result users choose.

Search Console and analytics platforms measure different stages of a visit and process data differently. Google’s Search Console Help states: “The data displayed in Search Console may differ from the data displayed in other tools, such as Google Analytics.”
Before calling two systems inconsistent, align these factors:
Best Value
- URL coverage: confirm that both systems include the same protocols, subdomains, redirects, and URL variants.
- Processing: analytics tools may apply duplicate or bot filtering differently from Search Console.
- Tracking dependence: many analytics systems require JavaScript to run, while Search Console records Google Search performance before that page-level tracking occurs.
- Privacy filtering: either system can suppress or model data to protect users.
- Date conventions: Search Console performance dates use California local time. A report run in another time zone can place late-night activity on different calendar days.
- Event definition: a Search Console click is a click from a Google service; an analytics session or pageview follows its own attribution and collection rules.
Use Search Console to verify search exposure and clicks, then use analytics to study what visitors did after arriving. Do not force the two totals to match.
Use exports when you need reproducible calculations
The interface is sufficient for routine checks, but exports help when you need to preserve a snapshot, join data to another system, or calculate a custom report. Google documents a zero-based sum_position value for a URL row in bulk exports. The documented average-position calculation is:
SUM(sum_position) / SUM(impressions) + 1
The final + 1 converts the zero-based export value to the one-based position shown to readers. Exported tables can contain repeated keys because data accumulates incrementally; aggregate the rows according to the export documentation before calculating totals. Record the property, search type, dimensions, filters, date range, and grouping basis alongside the file so another person can reproduce the result.

Search results Performance report
Use the detailed report when you need exact filters, query and page tables, period comparisons, search appearance, or a defensible explanation for a change.
Search Console Insights
Insights is a simplified overview of clicks, impressions, content, queries, and countries, with a date selector and links into the detailed Performance report. Google says this report is being introduced gradually, so it may not be available to every user. Treat it as a starting dashboard, then open Search results for the underlying breakdown.
WordPress and hosting dashboards
Google’s measurement guidance says WordPress users can view statistics with the Google Site Kit plugin, and other hosting services may offer dashboards or plugins. These are convenience layers, not replacements for checking the property and filters directly in Search Console. Use the Search results report when you need to verify the scope or explain a discrepancy.
A practical verification checklist
- Property selected: the intended domain or URL-prefix scope.
- Search type confirmed: Web, Image, Video, or News.
- Date range recorded, including the comparison range if used.
- Last-updated date checked; preliminary newest data identified.
- Clicks, impressions, CTR, and average position read together.
- Queries and Pages inspected before drawing a sitewide conclusion.
- Country, device, and search appearance checked when the change is concentrated.
- Property or page aggregation labeled in notes and exports.
- Weekly or monthly grouping used for long-term trends when daily noise obscures the pattern.
- Search Console dates aligned with California local time when comparing another system.
What a defensible conclusion looks like
A strong conclusion names the scope and evidence: for example, “In the selected Web-search property, mobile impressions for the filtered page group were lower in the compared period, while desktop impressions were stable.” That statement can be checked in the report. Avoid broader claims such as “the site ranks fourth” or “the title change caused the recovery” unless the data and an appropriately controlled analysis establish them.
Search Console verifies how Google Search exposed and delivered clicks to your property. It cannot, by itself, prove why a person clicked, whether a page satisfied the visitor, or that a single optimization caused a later change. Use the report’s dimensions, consistent comparisons, and explicit aggregation labels to keep the conclusion proportional to what the data actually shows.
