Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsBefore you share a political ad, separate three questions: who produced or paid for it, whether its disclosure follows the applicable rules, and whether its factual claims are supported. A sponsor label answers only the first question. Verify the ad by preserving the original, isolating one checkable claim, tracing it to primary evidence, checking dates and definitions, and then reading any serious fact-check in full. If important context is missing or the evidence remains uncertain, pause instead of reposting the claim as established fact.
A practical verification workflow
You do not need specialist equipment or a paid service. A careful browser-based check is usually enough, provided you keep the original wording and do not treat a familiar logo, disclaimer, or confident narrator as evidence.
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- Save the original ad and record its source, date, platform, sponsor and authorization statement.
- Transcribe or quote one factual assertion exactly.
- Find the government, court, legislative, statistical or other primary record behind that assertion.
- Check the claim’s period, population, units, definitions, baseline and omitted context.
- Search the exact wording with the candidate or organization name for independent fact-checks.
- Classify what the evidence supports and decide whether sharing would mislead without explanation.
Work claim by claim. An ad can contain an accurate number, a misleading comparison and an unsupported prediction in the same thirty seconds.

Why a repost is not enough
A screenshot or forwarded clip may remove the payer disclaimer, end card, date, caption, correction or preceding sentence. The person who sent it to you may not be the publisher. The Electoral Commission advises checking where campaign material originated rather than relying on the identity of the person who shared it.

What to record
- The candidate, party, committee, advocacy group or other named sponsor.
- The platform and account that posted it.
- The publication date and, if visible, the ad-library or campaign reference.
- The exact “paid for by” or authorization wording.
- The full URL or a saved copy, plus a transcript of spoken words and on-screen text.
If the original has been deleted, keep the repost but mark it as a copy and look for an archived campaign page, an official transcript or a contemporaneous report. Do not silently reconstruct a missing sentence from memory.
2. Isolate one checkable claim
Copy the words, not your interpretation
Write the precise sentence, number, quotation or event described in the ad. Include qualifiers such as “since 2020,” “in this state,” “the largest,” or “voted to.” A paraphrase can accidentally turn a limited claim into a broader one.
Separate facts from persuasion
- Usually checkable: a vote, date, budget amount, employment figure, tax rate, court ruling, quotation or recorded event.
- Not a present-tense fact: “will fix,” “puts families first,” “the only candidate,” or a prediction about future prices.
- Mixed claims: “This plan will save $4 billion” combines a proposed policy with a forecast; check the estimate’s assumptions rather than treating the promise as an accomplished result.
List separate assertions separately. “Candidate A cut taxes and unemployment fell” contains at least two factual claims and a possible causal inference. Each needs different evidence.

3. Trace the claim to primary evidence
Start with the record closest to the event
For a legislative claim, look for the bill text, roll-call record, official minutes or a nonpartisan legislative database. For a government statistic, use the agency’s release and underlying table. For a court claim, read the opinion or docket entry. For a spending allegation, examine the relevant budget, filing or audit.
FactCheck.org describes its method this way: “We rely on primary sources of information.” That is a useful standard for your own search. A news story can point you toward a record, but the record is what lets you check whether the story or ad accurately characterized it.

Follow citations and datasets
Ads sometimes display a tiny source line. Search the report title, table number or dataset name and open the publisher’s version. Confirm that the version covers the same geography and period. A chart copied from an old report may look official while no longer describing the current series.
Use experts for technical interpretation
Primary records do not always explain medical, economic, scientific or engineering implications. In those cases, consult a relevant subject-matter expert or nonpartisan public analysis. Check the author’s credentials, methods, assumptions, uncertainty and access to underlying data. An expert commentary should clarify what a record means, not replace the record when the record is available.
4. Check numbers, definitions and context
The minimum questions for any statistic
- Period: Which months, year, administration or before-and-after dates?
- Population: Which people, businesses, voters, jurisdictions or survey respondents?
- Units: Dollars or percentages? Nominal or inflation-adjusted? Per person or total?
- Definition: How are “jobs,” “violent crime,” “uninsured,” “families” or “income” defined?
- Baseline: Compared with what counterfactual, prior year, neighboring state or forecast?
- Uncertainty: Is there a margin of error, revision, confidence interval or model range?
UK official guidance on campaign statistics emphasizes clear definitions, equal access to underlying data, acknowledgment of uncertainty and the interpretive context around a number. Those principles apply wherever you are checking an ad.
Look for apples-to-oranges comparisons
An ad may compare a monthly figure with an annual figure, a percentage change with a percentage-point change, or one jurisdiction’s unadjusted total with another’s per-capita rate. Recalculate only after matching units and periods. If the source revised its historical series, use the current series consistently and note the revision.
Accurate can still be misleading
A technically correct number can create a false impression when the ad selects a favorable starting date, omits a larger comparison group or presents a short-term fluctuation as a trend. Describe the omission precisely: “The figure is correct for the stated quarter, but the ad leaves out the preceding decline,” rather than calling the number false.

5. Check quotations, votes and events in full
Quotations
Find the full speech, interview, transcript or video. Check who was being addressed, the sentence before and after the excerpt, and whether the speaker was quoting someone else or describing a hypothetical. A clipped phrase can preserve the speaker’s words while reversing the meaning.
Recommended Free Tools
Votes and legislative records
Verify the date, motion and final outcome. “Voted for” may refer to a procedural motion, an amendment or a failed bill rather than the enacted policy. Check whether the person was in office, present or recorded as absent at the relevant vote.
Events and images
Use contemporaneous official records, dated photographs, meeting minutes or reputable wire reporting. Reverse-image search results can reveal an older image, but they do not by themselves prove what happened in the new caption. Preserve the original file and metadata when available, while remembering that metadata can be stripped or edited.
6. Search independent fact-checks without outsourcing judgment
Search the distinctive wording
Put an unusual phrase in quotation marks and add the candidate, group or policy name. Try spelling variations and search the spoken wording separately from the on-screen caption. The Electoral Commission notes that fact-checkers may already have examined prominent public claims or authenticity questions.
Read the reasoning
Do not stop at a color rating or headline. Confirm that the fact-check addresses the same version of the ad, quotes the same words and links to evidence. Read its methodology and corrections policy. Fact-checkers can synthesize complex records, but their conclusion is only as strong as the evidence and definitions they cite.

Understand verdict language
- False: Reliable evidence contradicts the claim as stated.
- Unsupported: The available evidence does not establish it.
- Missing context: The core fact may be real, but material information changes the impression.
- Outdated: It was once accurate but no longer describes the relevant period.
- Not verifiable: The necessary records, data or identifiable wording are unavailable.
Use the narrowest conclusion justified by the sources. “I could not verify this” is not the same as “it is false.”
Which verification route answers which question?
| Route | Best for | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Government, court, legislative or statistical record | Dates, votes, official figures, rules and documented events | Exact period, definitions, version and whether the record supports the ad’s wording |
| Subject-matter expert or nonpartisan public analysis | Technical, economic, health and policy interpretation | Expertise, methods, assumptions, uncertainty and underlying data |
| Established fact-checking organization | Claims already prominent in public debate | Exact claim checked, source links, context and disclosed methodology |
| Election authority or platform policy page | Voting-process claims, sponsor labels and platform-rule questions | Jurisdiction, platform, ad format, date and scope of authority |
These routes are complementary, not interchangeable. A platform policy page can explain a disclosure requirement; an official record can establish what a public body recorded; a fact-check can synthesize evidence. None proves more than its evidence shows.

What a payer disclaimer tells you
A “paid for by” or authorization statement identifies a sponsor or indicates who approved a communication. Treat that name as a lead: it may help you find the campaign’s filings, source reports or full ad archive.
What it does not tell you
The disclaimer is not a fact-check and does not certify accuracy. The U.S. Federal Election Commission describes payer and authorization disclaimers for covered communications and medium-specific requirements; those disclosures identify the payor or authorization status, not whether a statement is true. The FEC page also cautions that it does not reflect a June 30, 2026 Supreme Court decision and will be revised after the Commission regains a quorum. Recheck the current rule before relying on it for present U.S. legal advice.
Platform labels and synthetic media
Google describes payer disclosures in regions where election-ad verification is required and additional labels for specified synthetic or digitally altered content. Such requirements vary by region, format and policy date. A label’s presence or absence is not a shortcut to truth. If an ad uses a realistic altered image, audio or video, verify the original media and consult the platform’s current policy; a policy violation does not, by itself, settle a separate numerical or policy claim.

What regulators can and cannot do
United Kingdom example
The Electoral Commission states: “We do not regulate the content of campaign material, and we do not have powers to verify or correct the information included in campaign material.” That is a statement about the commission’s own UK remit, not a universal rule for every country.
The commission describes a specific legal restriction and police route for false statements of fact about a candidate’s personal character or conduct. It notes that false policy statements are not covered by that law. UK guidance also distinguishes election advertisements from other political-issue advertising and describes separate remits for the Advertising Standards Authority and Ofcom. It points readers concerned about misuse of official statistics toward the UK Statistics Authority and Office for Statistics Regulation.
Other countries
Election laws, regulator powers and complaint routes differ. Before alleging an offence, identify the country, election, ad format and relevant statute. Check the election authority and applicable regulator directly. Do not assume that a false campaign statement is illegal or that an election commission verifies every claim.

Check provenance before interpretation
Find the earliest identifiable upload, compare frames or audio with an official recording and look for independent reporting of the event. Watch for abrupt cuts, mismatched lip movement, unnatural reflections, inconsistent shadows or a voice that appears only in a compressed repost. These clues justify further checking; they are not conclusive proof of synthetic generation.
Separate authenticity from the claim
An authentic video can carry a false caption, and a digitally altered clip can still quote a real policy document elsewhere in the ad. Verify the media’s origin and the accompanying factual claim as two separate tasks.
Decide whether and how to share
Use a simple evidence decision
- Supported: Primary evidence matches the precise claim and the context is not materially omitted. Link the record when sharing.
- Supported with context: The central figure or event is real, but the ad’s framing leaves out a comparison, definition or uncertainty. State the missing context next to the link.
- Unresolved: Sources conflict, the data are incomplete or the wording is too vague. Do not repeat it as settled fact; describe the uncertainty.
- Contradicted: Reliable primary evidence conflicts with the claim. If correcting it, quote the original claim, link the record and explain the contradiction without amplifying unnecessary sensational language.
Pause when the cost of error is high
Claims about voting dates, eligibility, polling locations, emergencies, public health or imminent violence can cause immediate harm. Verify through the responsible election authority or agency before sharing, even if the post appears to come from a familiar campaign.
A reusable pre-share checklist
- Did I locate the original ad rather than a repost?
- Did I save the exact wording, audio and on-screen text?
- Did I identify the sponsor and authorization statement?
- Did I split the message into individual factual claims?
- Did I find the closest primary record?
- Do the date, population, units, baseline and definition match?
- Did I read the full quotation or legislative record?
- Did I search for an independent fact-check and inspect its citations?
- Have I distinguished false, unsupported, outdated and missing-context conclusions?
- Would my caption make an uncertain claim sound settled?
If any answer is no, keep the link private until you can resolve the gap or explain it honestly.
