Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteTo verify that Cisco Smart Software Manager On-Prem is patched, identify the exact release running on the server, then compare that release with both Cisco security advisories published on October 7, 2026. For the October 2026 Security Hardening advisory, Cisco’s fixed 10-series release is 10-202609; the separate Cisco License (Smart Software Manager) On-Prem Vulnerabilities advisory lists 10-202608 as its first fixed 10-series release. A 10-202608 installation therefore meets the second advisory’s threshold but does not satisfy the hardening advisory’s 10-202609 requirement.
Also verify that the upgrade process completed, the system synchronized afterward, and your change record identifies the observed server release and the advisory threshold checked. A connected router, switch, or other Cisco product’s show version or licensing output cannot prove the SSM On-Prem server’s patch level.

What Cisco calls the product now
Cisco Smart Software Manager On-Prem is now called Cisco License On-Prem. Cisco’s October 2026 advisories use both names so that administrators can match the current product name with older deployment records, release notes, and operational procedures.

The check concerns the release installed on the License On-Prem (formerly SSM On-Prem) server. It is not a check of whether a connected network device is licensed, whether that device can reach the licensing service, or whether a product instance reports a current software image.

The fixed-release thresholds you must check
Cisco published two relevant advisories on October 7, 2026. Their first-fixed-release thresholds are different, so checking only one table can produce a misleading “patched” result.
| Advisory | Releases Cisco identifies as affected | First fixed 10-series release | Status of 10-202609 | Guidance for 9-202601 and earlier |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Cisco License (Smart Software Manager) On-Prem Security Hardening Release: October 2026 | 10-202608 and earlier | 10-202609 | Cisco lists it as not vulnerable | Migrate to a fixed release |
| Cisco License (Smart Software Manager) On-Prem Vulnerabilities | Earlier than 10-202608 | 10-202608 | Cisco lists it as not vulnerable | Migrate to a fixed release |
The practical rule is to follow the most current fixed-release direction applicable to your deployment. If the server runs a 10-series release, use 10-202609 as the October 2026 hardening target. Do not report 10-202608 as satisfying that hardening advisory merely because it is the first fixed release in the separate vulnerabilities advisory.
Cisco says the hardening advisory has no workaround that addresses the vulnerabilities and strongly recommends upgrading to the fixed software specified in the advisory. Cisco’s stated CVSS base score for the highest-impact vulnerability grouping in that hardening advisory is 10.0. The separate vulnerabilities advisory carries a Cisco CVSS base score of 9.1.
Step 1: Identify the exact server release
Start with the deployed License On-Prem server, not a device that consumes licenses from it. Record the complete release string exactly as displayed in your authorized administration interface, deployment documentation, or upgrade records. Preserve the year-and-month style identifier, including the hyphen, such as 10-202609 or 9-202504.
Cisco’s reviewed upgrade article explains how to apply an upgrade but does not establish a universal command or a specific GUI location for displaying the SSM On-Prem server release. Do not invent a command, infer a version from a browser title, or substitute a connected product’s version. If the deployment’s administration interface and records do not let you confirm the server release, open a Cisco Support Case Manager request and ask Cisco Support to validate the installed release.

What to capture
- The product name used in your record: Cisco License On-Prem or Cisco Smart Software Manager On-Prem.
- The complete running server release string.
- The server or virtual-machine identifier that produced the value.
- The date and time of the observation, including the time zone used by your change process.
- The administrator or service account that performed the check.
Do not shorten a value to “version 10” or “the September build.” The advisory comparison depends on the full release identifier.
Step 2: Compare the release with both advisories
Perform two separate comparisons and record the result of each. The tables are advisory-specific; a release can clear one table’s first-fixed threshold while failing the other.
10-series releases
- 10-202609: Cisco identifies this release as not vulnerable in both October 2026 advisories and as the fixed 10-series release for the hardening advisory.
- 10-202608: Cisco identifies this as the first fixed release in the separate vulnerabilities advisory, but the hardening advisory includes 10-202608 and earlier as affected. Treat 10-202608 as below the October 2026 hardening target.
- Earlier than 10-202608: The release is affected under the separate vulnerabilities advisory and is also below the hardening advisory’s fixed release.
Version 9 releases
Cisco’s October 2026 tables state that releases 9-202601 and earlier must migrate to a fixed release. The advisories do not turn that statement into a claim that any particular version 9 build is acceptable for the current hardening requirement. Record the release and follow Cisco’s migration direction rather than declaring it patched from a version 9 label alone.
How to write the result
A defensible record names the observed release and the exact table used. For example: “Cisco License On-Prem server observed at 10-202609 on October 17, 2026; meets the October 2026 Security Hardening advisory’s fixed-release threshold and the separate vulnerabilities advisory’s threshold.” If the server is 10-202608, state instead that it meets the separate vulnerabilities advisory’s first-fixed threshold but remains below the hardening advisory’s 10-202609 requirement.
Step 3: Confirm that an upgrade really completed
A release value in a planned change does not prove that the upgrade finished. Cisco’s advisory tables describe fixed software, while the upgrade article describes the mechanics needed to apply it. Verify the post-change state independently.

- Confirm that the administrator selected the intended SSM On-Prem (now Cisco License On-Prem) release upgrade for the correct deployment.
- Confirm that the upgrade package was transferred to the server.
- Confirm that the package’s corresponding signature file was transferred as well. Cisco says an existing corresponding signature file is required for the upgrade.
- Confirm that the upgrade command was issued and that the operation completed without an error reported by the deployment.
- After the upgrade, identify the running server release again and compare that observed value with both advisory tables.
- Synchronize the system after the upgrade, as Cisco instructs.
- Record the synchronization result, time, and any error message in the change record.
Do not mark the server patched solely because an upload succeeded or because an upgrade job was started. The evidence should show the release that is running after the operation and the required synchronization step.
Virtual-machine precautions and stale browser data
Back up before upgrading a VM deployment
For virtual-machine deployments, Cisco highly recommends backing up the database before an upgrade. Treat that backup as a recovery control: record when it was taken, where it is stored, and how its success was verified under your organization’s backup procedure.
Clear the browser cache if pages look unchanged
Cisco notes that browser pages may not immediately reflect the latest changes after an upgrade. If the interface appears to show old information, clear the browser cache, start a fresh authenticated session, and check the release and synchronization state again. A stale page is not evidence that the server failed to upgrade, but it is also not evidence that the upgrade succeeded; verify the server state after refreshing the session.
Version 9-202504 has an additional release-specific requirement
Cisco’s version 9 release notes say: “Applying the Supplementary Patch is required for all upgrades to, or fresh installations of, version 9-202504 regardless of whether the upgrade or installation completes successfully.” The same notes require a full synchronization of all SSM On-Prem accounts after a successful upgrade.
Apply that instruction only when the deployment and procedure concern version 9-202504. It is a release-note requirement for that release, not a universal rule that can be applied to every current Cisco License On-Prem version. If you are migrating from 9-202601 or earlier under the October 2026 advisories, use the current Cisco fixed-release and migration instructions for the target release as well as any applicable release notes.

Do not confuse server patching with device licensing
Connected Cisco products have their own software and licensing diagnostics. A device’s show version output identifies that device’s image; a command such as show license status reports licensing information for that product instance. Those outputs can help troubleshoot the device’s licensing relationship, but they do not establish which Cisco License On-Prem server release is installed.
Keep the two checks separate:
- Server patch check: identify the License On-Prem server release and compare it with each applicable Cisco advisory.
- Device licensing check: inspect the product instance’s software, licensing state, registration, or connectivity using the commands documented for that product family.
A device can report a healthy licensing state while the server is below an advisory’s fixed release. Conversely, a patched server does not by itself prove that every connected device is registered or synchronized correctly.
Build an auditable verification record
Use one change or security record for each verification event. Include enough detail for another administrator or an auditor to reproduce the conclusion without guessing which threshold you used.
- Product identity: Cisco License On-Prem, with “formerly Cisco SSM On-Prem” where older records use that name.
- Observed release: the complete server release string, exactly as displayed or confirmed by support.
- Advisories checked: the October 7, 2026 Security Hardening Release advisory and the October 7, 2026 Vulnerabilities advisory, or a later Cisco revision that supersedes them.
- Comparison: whether the observed release meets each advisory’s stated threshold.
- Upgrade evidence: package transfer, corresponding signature-file availability, command completion, and resulting release.
- Synchronization evidence: when synchronization ran and whether it completed successfully.
- VM backup evidence: for a virtual deployment, the pre-upgrade database backup and its verification.
- Exceptions: cache clearing, support involvement, failed attempts, rollback, or any unresolved discrepancy.
When reporting “patched,” name the advisory and threshold in the same sentence. “Patched” without that context is ambiguous because Cisco’s two October 2026 advisories use different first-fixed releases.
Troubleshooting an inconclusive check
The release cannot be found
Do not infer the server version from a connected device, an old installation filename, or a planned upgrade ticket. Check the authorized administration interface and retained upgrade records. If those sources disagree or do not show a complete release string, preserve the conflicting evidence and contact Cisco Support for confirmation.

The server shows 10-202608
Recheck both advisory tables. Cisco lists 10-202608 as the first fixed release in the separate vulnerabilities advisory, but the October 2026 hardening advisory treats 10-202608 and earlier as affected. Plan or perform the upgrade to 10-202609, then verify the running release and synchronization again.
The upgrade package was accepted but the old release remains
Confirm that the corresponding signature file was present, that the upgrade command completed, and that you are checking the server rather than a cached browser page. For a VM, verify the database backup and review the deployment’s upgrade result. If the release still does not change, stop treating the system as patched and escalate with the deployment identifiers, observed messages, package details, and change record.
The page still displays old information
Clear the browser cache and establish a new session, following Cisco’s note about stale pages after upgrades. Then repeat the release and synchronization checks. Record the cache-clearing action so the verification timeline is clear.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesSynchronization did not complete
Do not close the change as successful solely because the release changed. Cisco instructs administrators to synchronize after an upgrade. Record the synchronization error, preserve logs required by your support process, and contact Cisco Support if the operation cannot be completed. The server’s fixed-release status and the health of account synchronization are related but distinct controls.
When to involve Cisco Support
Use Cisco Support Case Manager when you cannot establish the exact server release, when release records conflict, when the signature-file or upgrade operation fails, or when synchronization cannot be completed. Provide the full release value you observed, the advisory thresholds you checked, the deployment type, the upgrade package and signature-file status, relevant error text, and the times of each attempt. This gives support enough context to distinguish a version-identification problem from an upgrade or synchronization problem.
A concise verification checklist
- Identify the running Cisco License On-Prem server release, preserving the complete string.
- Check the October 2026 Security Hardening advisory. For the affected 10-series releases, the target is 10-202609; 9-202601 and earlier require migration to a fixed release.
- Check the separate October 2026 Vulnerabilities advisory. Its first fixed 10-series release is 10-202608, while 9-202601 and earlier still require migration.
- If the server is 10-202608, do not call it compliant with the hardening advisory.
- Verify the upgrade package, corresponding signature file, command completion, and resulting release.
- Synchronize after the upgrade and record the outcome.
- For a VM, verify the recommended database backup; if pages appear stale, clear the browser cache and recheck.
- Document the exact release, advisories, thresholds, evidence, and any support case.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Cisco SSM On-Prem the same product as Cisco License On-Prem?
Yes. Cisco’s current advisories call the product Cisco License On-Prem and identify it as formerly Cisco Smart Software Manager On-Prem (SSM On-Prem).
Does release 10-202608 count as patched?
It meets the first-fixed threshold in Cisco’s separate October 2026 vulnerabilities advisory, but it does not meet the October 2026 Security Hardening advisory, which treats 10-202608 and earlier as affected and specifies 10-202609 for the 10-series.
Can a connected router’s show version prove the server is patched?
No. Device commands report the connected product instance. Patch verification requires the exact release running on the Cisco License On-Prem server.
