Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesVerify a ChatGPT answer as you would a research draft: separate it into checkable claims, open every cited source, confirm that each source exists and supports the exact wording, trace important quotations and figures to the original record, and compare consequential claims with independent evidence. A confident tone is not evidence.
What it means to verify a ChatGPT answer
Verification is not a quick search for a page that sounds similar to the answer. It is a claim-by-claim check of whether the evidence exists, whether it says what the answer attributes to it, and whether the evidence applies to the same people, dates, definitions and circumstances.

OpenAI’s Help Center describes ChatGPT as a starting point rather than an authority: “Use ChatGPT as a first draft, not a final source.” Its guidance also warns that “Search results and citations can be incomplete, outdated, or incorrect.” Those warnings apply even when an answer includes footnotes, links or a polished explanation. ChatGPT can produce incorrect facts and fabricated quotations, studies or citations.

A primary source is the original record closest to the event or evidence: a law or regulation, an official dataset, a court opinion, a company filing, a research paper reporting its own methods and results, an interview recording, or an organization’s original statement. A primary source is useful for checking what was actually recorded, but primary status does not automatically make a claim accurate or complete. You still need to examine method, scope, incentives and context.

Start by deciding which claims deserve checking first
Do not spend equal time on every sentence. Mark statements that could change a decision, create legal or financial risk, affect health or safety, or be repeated publicly. Also mark anything containing a date, number, definition, quotation, technical detail or assertion about an external document.
Use consequence to set the depth of review
| Claim type | Minimum check | Stronger check when stakes are high |
|---|---|---|
| Low-stakes background detail | Confirm the cited page exists and supports the sentence. | Check a second reputable source if the detail is disputed or unusually specific. |
| Current policy, product or event information | Read the publisher’s current page and its publication or update date. | Check the responsible agency, filing, release or other original record, then compare an independent report. |
| Statistic, quotation or study result | Locate the exact table, passage or result in the cited work. | Trace to the original dataset, document or recording and check population, time period, method and limitations. |
| Health, legal, financial or safety claim | Do not rely on the answer alone; identify authoritative primary material. | Use more than one independent reputable source and obtain qualified professional advice where appropriate. |
This prioritization follows OpenAI’s advice to check important information, quotes, data, technical information and external references. It also prevents a common mistake: spending ten minutes validating an incidental adjective while accepting an unsupported number that drives the conclusion.
Turn the answer into a claim ledger
Before opening links, rewrite the response as individual propositions. One sentence may contain several claims with different evidence requirements. For example, “The agency changed the rule in March, exempted small firms and cut reporting by 20 percent” contains at least three claims: the date, the exemption and the percentage.

Record the answer’s wording exactly enough to find it again, then identify what would count as proof.
| Column | What to record |
|---|---|
| Claim ID | A short label such as C-04. |
| Exact claim | The sentence or a precise paraphrase, including qualifiers and units. |
| Importance | Decision-changing, consequential, contextual or incidental. |
| ChatGPT citation | Title, author or organization, URL and any date shown. |
| Primary record sought | The law, filing, dataset, paper, transcript, release or other original document. |
| Passage or data checked | Page number, section, table, paragraph, timestamp or quoted text. |
| Result | Supported, partly supported, contradicted, not found or unresolved. |
| Notes | Scope, definitions, conflicts, missing context and the date you checked. |
Keeping the original wording matters. If you silently weaken “proves” to “suggests” during checking, you may miss that the answer overstated its evidence.

Open every citation and prove that it exists
- Open the link rather than trusting its appearance. Check that the destination loads, belongs to the named publisher and is the work described. A plausible title, journal name or DOI-like string can still be fabricated.
- Compare the bibliographic details. Match title, author, organization, publication date, edition, report number and document type. A real page with a similar title is not necessarily the cited source.
- Check the page’s status. Note whether it is current, archived, corrected, withdrawn, superseded or merely a search-result snippet. Save the page’s update date when one is provided.
- Read beyond the highlighted sentence. Search within the document for the key term, then read the surrounding paragraphs, definitions, footnotes and limitations.
If a link is dead, redirecting, paywalled or inaccessible, record that limitation. Do not treat a search snippet, an uncited summary or another page repeating the same wording as proof that the source said it.
Match the source to the exact claim
A source can be genuine yet fail to support the sentence attributed to it. Check four dimensions before marking a claim supported:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Subject: Is the source discussing the same person, product, institution, jurisdiction or event?
- Scope: Does it support the broad conclusion, or only a narrower example, subgroup or possibility?
- Time: Does the source cover the date in the answer? A current statement may be wrong if the evidence is old, and a historical statement may be distorted by a later revision.
- Strength: Does the source say “causes,” “is associated with,” “may,” “estimates” or “reported”? Preserve that level of certainty.
Penn State University Libraries advises checking that a source actually supports the claim attributed to it. Apply that test to every important sentence, not just to the answer’s final recommendation. A press release may establish what an organization announced; it may not establish that the policy worked, that users adopted it or that a promised result occurred.
Classify partial support precisely
| Finding | Use it when | How to report it |
|---|---|---|
| Supported | The source directly states or documents the claim with matching scope and date. | Keep the claim, retaining the source’s qualifications. |
| Partly supported | The source supports a narrower or less certain version. | Rewrite to the supported scope and identify what was not established. |
| Contradicted | The source says the opposite or reports materially different figures. | Remove or correct the claim and explain the conflict. |
| Not found | The cited work exists but the alleged passage, figure or result cannot be located. | Do not present the claim as verified. |
| Unresolved | Reliable sources disagree or the original record is unavailable. | Describe the disagreement and the reason it cannot yet be settled. |
Trace quotations, statistics and technical details to the original record
Quotations
Copy the quoted words into the original document’s search function. Confirm spelling, punctuation, speaker, date, audience and whether the words are continuous or assembled from separate passages. Read the sentences before and after the quote; a clipped phrase can reverse the speaker’s meaning. If the original is a video or audio recording, note the timestamp. If you cannot reach the original recording or transcript, label the quotation unverified rather than relying on a secondary quotation.
Statistics
Locate the table, chart or downloadable dataset behind the number. Check the unit, denominator, sample or population, geographic coverage, time period, weighting, rounding and whether the value is preliminary or revised. “A 20 percent increase” could mean a relative increase from 10 to 12 or a 20-percentage-point change; the source’s definition decides which wording is valid. Check whether ChatGPT turned a modeled estimate into a measured count or presented a one-time figure as a recurring rate.

Studies and technical claims
Read the abstract and methods, not only a headline or conclusion. Identify the design, comparison group, sample size, measured outcome and stated limitations. A laboratory result, simulation or small observational study may not justify a claim about every user or real-world performance. For software or technical specifications, use the maker’s documentation or release record for the version in question, then verify that the answer did not mix editions, regions or beta features.

Use more than the domain name. Campbell Brooks of the House of Commons Library summarizes common reliability criteria as “authority, motivation, accuracy and relevance.” Apply those criteria together with transparency:
- Authority and expertise: Who is responsible for the statement, and is that person or institution qualified for this subject?
- Accuracy: Does the source show evidence, calculations, references, corrections and a method that another reader can inspect?
- Relevance: Does it answer the same question, for the same population, jurisdiction and period?
- Transparency: Are data, assumptions, definitions, conflicts and limitations disclosed?
- Purpose and interests: Is the source informing, persuading, selling, lobbying, defending a position or reporting an independent finding? Funding or institutional interests do not automatically disqualify a source, but they affect how you interpret it.
- Currency: When was it published or updated, and does this claim change quickly?
A government page may be authoritative about its own rule or announcement but not independent evidence that the rule achieved its intended outcome. A company filing is a primary record of what the company reported, while its forecasts remain management’s claims. A peer-reviewed paper can provide transparent methods while still having a narrow sample or uncertainty. Record the distinction instead of assigning a source a simple “reliable” label.
Read laterally and corroborate important claims
Lateral reading means leaving the page to learn about its author, publisher, methods and reputation, rather than judging credibility from the page’s design. Penn State recommends this approach, and Purdue OWL’s research guidance emphasizes author expertise, purpose, evidence, cross-checking, timeliness and references.
- Identify the original publisher or institution.
- Look for independent descriptions of the author’s expertise, funding, corrections or role.
- Find another reputable source that addresses the same claim.
- Compare the two sources’ definitions, population, dates, methods and scope before treating agreement as corroboration.
Two articles that copy one press release are not independent confirmation. Conversely, two sources can appear to disagree while measuring different things. Corroboration is strongest when the sources are independent, use transparent methods and converge on the same proposition without sharing an obvious single origin.

Resolve disagreements instead of averaging them away
When sources conflict, first test whether the conflict is only apparent. Compare:
- publication and update dates, including revisions;
- definitions, units and thresholds;
- geographic area, industry, demographic group or other population;
- time window and whether the figure is a snapshot, average, forecast or cumulative total;
- method, sample selection, model assumptions and margin of uncertainty;
- the question each source was designed to answer.
If the records still conflict, preserve the disagreement. State which source reports which result, why one may be more relevant to the reader’s question, and what remains unknown. Do not choose the more convenient number or combine incompatible figures into an artificial average. For a consequential decision, ask a qualified professional or subject-matter specialist to interpret the conflict.
Keep an audit trail that someone else can reproduce
Save the claim ledger with the source title, publisher, exact URL or document identifier, publication or update date, passage or data checked and your conclusion. Include the date you accessed the material and note whether the page was archived, corrected or unavailable. For a dataset, record the file name, version, query or calculation; for audio or video, record the timestamp; for a long report, record the page and section.
An audit trail is not bureaucracy. It lets you update a time-sensitive answer without starting over, show a colleague why a sentence was changed and distinguish a verified fact from an unresolved lead. Keep the evidence attached to the claim it supports, not in a loose list of links at the end.
What to do when ChatGPT’s citation fails
The source cannot be found
Search the exact title in quotation marks, the author or institution and distinctive terms, but treat results as leads. Check the publisher’s own catalogue, repository or document index. If no authoritative record exists, mark the citation as unverified and remove any claim that depends on it.
Best Value
The source exists but says something else
Quote or summarize the passage accurately, then narrow or replace the answer’s sentence. Keep the source if it is useful for the narrower point; do not leave a citation attached to a broader claim it cannot support.
The link is old or the page changed
Look for a dated version, correction notice, archive or successor document. State which version you checked. For policies, prices, software features and other changing information, do not imply that an old page describes the current position.
The answer cites a secondary summary
Follow its references upstream. Use the original law, dataset, paper, filing, transcript or statement for the central fact, and use the secondary source only for interpretation or context that it genuinely adds.
You cannot access the primary record
Say so. A paywall, broken archive or missing transcript is an evidence limitation, not confirmation. Use an accessible reputable source only for the narrower claim it supports and label the primary record as unchecked.
A worked example of the verification method
Imagine an answer says: “A regulator adopted a rule in March 2025, reduced reporting costs by 20 percent and described the change as eliminating most small-business paperwork.” Break it into separate rows:
- Did the regulator adopt a rule?
- Was adoption in March 2025, or was that the proposal, publication or effective date?
- What does “20 percent” measure: an estimate, a surveyed average, a projected annual cost or an observed result?
- Did the regulator use the phrase “eliminating most small-business paperwork,” and what definition of small business did it use?
Open the final rule or official register entry to verify the action and dates. Read the cost-benefit analysis for the estimate and its assumptions. Search the document for the quoted phrase and check whether it is a prediction, a comment from an interested party or the regulator’s conclusion. Then compare an independent analysis that uses the same dates and population. Your revised answer might retain the adoption date, qualify the 20 percent figure as a projected estimate and remove the quotation if it cannot be located. That is a more useful result than calling the entire response simply “right” or “wrong.”
Final publication checklist
- Every decision-changing statement has its own claim row.
- Every citation resolves to the work named, not merely a similar page.
- The source passage, table or timestamp supports the exact scope and certainty of the sentence.
- Dates, versions, regions, populations, units and definitions match.
- Quotations are checked against the original wording and context.
- Statistics are checked against the original table, dataset or method.
- Primary records are distinguished from commentary, marketing and advocacy.
- Important claims have independent corroboration where access and stakes justify it.
- Conflicts, missing records and unresolved uncertainty remain visible.
- The audit trail records title, publisher, URL or identifier, date, passage and conclusion.
The practical standard is not certainty about every sentence. It is a transparent chain from claim to evidence, with the limits of that chain stated plainly. ChatGPT can accelerate drafting and help you find questions to investigate; the primary record and your documented checks determine what you can responsibly publish or rely on.
