How to Verify and Restore Total War: WARHAMMER III Files After a Corrupted Mod

To verify and restore Total War: WARHAMMER III files after a corrupted mod, first disable or remove the suspected mod, then use Steam’s built-in file check: Library → right-click Total War: WARHAMMER III → Properties → Installed Files → Verify integrity of game files. These steps apply to the Steam version; other PC storefronts use different support guidance.

Before you remove the mod

Check whether your current campaign depends on the mod. SEGA warns that a save made with a mod may not continue normally after that mod is removed, and you may need to start a new campaign. Back up important saves before changing mods or game data. The recovery steps below are for a Steam installation.

Disable or remove the suspect mod

Steam Workshop mod

Disable the mod in the game’s mod controls or unsubscribe from it through Steam. If you are troubleshooting several mods, start with the one most likely to be involved rather than removing everything at once.

Manually installed mod

SEGA says manually installed mod files may be in the game installation’s data or mods folder. Move the suspected files somewhere outside the game folder or remove them only when you can identify them confidently. Do not delete files whose purpose is unclear. See SEGA’s Total War: WARHAMMER III troubleshooting guide.

  • From the icy peaks of Naggaroth to the arid reaches of the Southlands, each race struggles for dominion. As their conquests grow, the land turns crimson, and rivers run red with the blood of the slain!

Verify the Steam installation

  1. Open the Steam Library.
  2. Right-click Total War: WARHAMMER III and select Properties.
  3. Open Installed Files.
  4. Select Verify integrity of game files and let the scan finish.

Steam says verification may take several minutes; that is an estimate, not a guaranteed duration. Avoid running multiple verifications at once or performing other intensive system tasks during the scan. Steam’s instructions are at Verify Integrity of Game Files.

Read the verification result correctly

A notice that one or more files failed to verify does not necessarily mean the main installation is still damaged. Steam says: “This is normal for most Steam games. The files that fail to verify are local configuration files that should not be replaced as part of this process.” If Steam replaces damaged or missing game files, let it complete the repair before testing the game.

Test the game and isolate a mod conflict

Launch the game with the suspect mod disabled. If it works, re-enable only mods compatible with the current game version, one at a time, testing after each change. A mod author may not have updated a mod for a newer game version, so a game update can expose an incompatibility even if the mod previously worked.

If the problem continues after verification

Back up and isolate Creative Assembly data

SEGA recommends backing up the folder at C:UsersYOURUSERNAMEAppDataRoamingThe Creative Assembly, moving it aside, and testing the game. Preserve the original folder rather than deleting it. If the test resolves the issue, SEGA says you can copy the save folder back. Keep a separate backup of saves, especially if the campaign uses the removed mod.

Consider antivirus interference

Steam notes that verification can restore installation files deleted or corrupted by antivirus software. If your antivirus flagged a file, treat that detection seriously and consult the antivirus provider before changing protection settings or creating exclusions. Do not automatically restore or allow a file you cannot verify.

Contact support with diagnostic details

If the game still fails after a clean verification and mod isolation, note the exact error, what you did immediately before it appeared, the mods installed, and the troubleshooting steps already tried. Include relevant diagnostic files when contacting SEGA support. The Steam file-verification steps here should not be assumed to apply to Epic Games Store or Microsoft Store/Xbox app; use the instructions for your storefront.
