How to Verify an XRP Ledger Transaction and Troubleshoot Delays

Verify an XRP Ledger transaction by looking up its hash and checking for validated: true. A wallet’s immediate submission response—even tesSUCCESS—is provisional, not proof that the transaction is final. Once validated, read meta.TransactionResult: validated tesSUCCESS means success; other validated results reflect the final outcome under the protocol.

What counts as a confirmed XRP Ledger transaction?

The submit response and the final ledger result are different things. A submit response reports a server’s provisional view of receiving or applying a candidate transaction to an in-progress ledger. It can change before validation, so an immediate tesSUCCESS is not final confirmation. The XRP Ledger Reliable Transaction Submission guide explains that results become final after the transaction is included in a validated ledger.

For a final check, query the transaction by hash and inspect the response’s validated field. When it is true, read meta.TransactionResult and the ledger index. A validated tesSUCCESS is final success. Other validated result codes are also final; their effects depend on the result category.

How to check a transaction by hash

  1. Find the transaction hash. Get it from the wallet’s transaction details, signing output, or saved submission record. If you operate an application, XRPL recommends saving the hash, LastLedgerSequence, sender address and sequence number, and the latest validated ledger index at submission.
  2. Query the XRPL tx method. Use the hash with the API’s transaction lookup method, or a client-library wrapper that returns the same transaction record. The XRPL tx method reference describes the response fields.
  3. Check validation before interpreting the result. If validated is true, inspect meta.TransactionResult, the ledger index, and, if useful, the ledger close time. If it is not validated, the lookup does not yet establish a final outcome.
  4. Repeat an unvalidated lookup after another validated ledger. Most transactions are accepted into the next ledger, but connectivity or ledger load can extend the wait. Keep the transaction’s LastLedgerSequence in view while waiting.

How long does an XRP Ledger transaction take?

The XRP Ledger’s Send XRP tutorial says many transactions take about 4–7 seconds for a final result in typical conditions. This is approximate guidance, not a guaranteed maximum: network connectivity and ledger load can increase the wait. New ledger versions usually occur about every 3–5 seconds, according to the XRP Ledger consensus documentation, but ledger cadence alone does not guarantee when a particular transaction will validate.

What LastLedgerSequence tells you

LastLedgerSequence is the highest ledger index in which the transaction can be included. Once that limit has passed, the transaction cannot later be included under that same limit. XRPL’s Reliable Transaction Submission guidance recommends setting this field for every transaction; it says automated processes commonly set it four above the last validated ledger index. That is application guidance, not a promise about how a particular wallet chooses the value.

  • If the latest validated ledger is still below the transaction’s LastLedgerSequence, keep waiting and query again. Its absence so far is inconclusive.
  • If the latest validated ledger has passed the limit, do not infer expiration from a missing lookup until you know the queried server has continuous ledger history across the relevant range.
  • If complete history confirms no inclusion through the limit, the transaction is absent from that range and cannot be included later under that limit.

Diagnose a pending or missing transaction

The wallet says “pending,” but the hash lookup is not validated

Compare the latest validated ledger index with LastLedgerSequence. If the limit has not been reached, the transaction may still be included; wait for another validated ledger and query again. A generic “pending” label does not reveal whether the record is validated.

The limit passed, but the transaction still cannot be found

Check whether the server used for the lookup has continuous ledger history from the submission point through the LastLedgerSequence ledger. An endpoint with incomplete history may be unable to establish that a transaction was never included. If the history is complete and confirms absence, check the sender’s account sequence: an advanced sequence may indicate that another transaction used it. XRPL’s reliable-submission guide recommends manual intervention in this situation.

A submit response reports an error

Do not treat an immediate engine_result as a final ledger result. XRPL groups transaction codes into families that can help narrow down a problem, but the submit-time response is still provisional. The transaction result reference describes the categories:

  • TAMPER-EVIDENT SECURITY LAYERS - Each coin includes peel-to-reveal protection that helps provide a clear visual signal if the private key area has been accessed. Once opened to move funds out, the coin should not be reused for secure cold storage.
  • tec: the intended transaction effect did not occur, but the transaction cost was destroyed. This is final only when found in a validated ledger.
  • tef: the transaction cannot be applied to the server’s current or any later ledger, though prior application or ledger conditions can matter.
  • tel: a local server condition, such as high load, caused the error; another server or a later attempt may respond differently.
  • tem: the transaction is malformed or cannot be applied by any server under current protocol rules.

The result reference cautions that human-readable engine messages and numeric codes can change. Use the named result code and validated transaction metadata rather than relying on message text alone.

The ledger result is confirmed, but a service still shows a delay

A validated transaction result establishes its ledger outcome; it does not establish the status of a wallet provider’s display or an exchange’s internal processing. If the transaction is validated but a service has not updated, use the transaction hash and validated ledger details when contacting that service.

Compare status reports using the same evidence

When a wallet, explorer, and API appear to disagree, compare the underlying fields rather than relying on labels such as “pending” or “complete.”
