Before entering card details, verify the exact domain, the business behind it, its policies, reputation, offer, and payment protections. HTTPS only encrypts the connection; it does not prove that a retailer is legitimate. If the site uses a lookalike address, creates urgency, asks for irrelevant personal data, offers an implausibly low price, or demands a hard-to-recover payment, stop and investigate instead of checking out.
Start with a stop-or-proceed decision
Online shopping risk is easiest to manage before money or sensitive information leaves your control. Use the checks below in order, and treat any unresolved high-risk signal as a reason not to buy.
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
| Warning sign | Why it matters | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Misspelled or lookalike domain | You may be on an imitation site rather than the retailer you intended to visit. | Close the tab, type the known address yourself, and search the seller name with “scam” or “reviews.” |
| Urgency, countdowns, or pressure to pay immediately | Pressure discourages the checks that expose fraud, counterfeit goods, or poor fulfilment. | Pause. Compare the same item and seller elsewhere before deciding. |
| Price far below normal market levels | The seller may not possess the item, or it may be counterfeit or materially different from the listing. | Compare specifications, photos, shipping, taxes, and the seller identity—not just the headline price. |
| Request for data unrelated to the purchase | Extra information increases privacy and identity-theft exposure without helping fulfil the order. | Ask why it is needed. Do not continue if the explanation is absent or unreasonable. |
| Gift card, wire, cryptocurrency, or off-platform payment demand | These methods can leave little practical dispute or recovery path. | Decline and leave. A seller that insists on one of these methods is not worth the risk. |
The Better Business Bureau advises closing the tab when the domain spelling is wrong and investigating the name with terms such as “scam” or “reviews” (BBB fake-website guidance).

Read every part of the domain
Look at the address bar rather than a logo, search-result snippet, advertisement, or email link. Check the spelling of the registrable domain, added words, swapped letters, unusual hyphens, and misleading subdomains. A familiar brand name appearing before an unfamiliar domain does not make the site official; the controlling domain is the part immediately before the top-level domain.

If you reached the store from an email, social post, text message, or advertisement, open a new tab and enter the retailer’s known address manually or use a reputable search result. Do not assume that a padlock, polished design, copied product photos, or a high search ranking establishes authenticity.
Separate a marketplace from an individual seller
On a marketplace, identify two parties: the platform operator and the independent seller. The platform may process the page or payment while the individual seller controls inventory, dispatch, and product descriptions. The Federal Trade Commission recommends checking who is actually selling the item and keeping important answers in writing (FTC guidance on buying through online marketplaces).
2. Treat HTTPS as encryption, not a trust seal
HTTPS protects data while it travels between your browser and the website. It does not verify the owner, the goods, the company’s honesty, or what happens to information after submission. The FTC states: “The ‘s’ after http means the site is encrypted — but it doesn’t mean it’s a legitimate site” (FTC online-shopping guidance).
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsConfirm that the checkout page remains on the expected domain and that your browser does not show a certificate warning. Encryption is a necessary baseline for payment, not a reason to skip identity, policy, reputation, and payment-recourse checks. Never enter card data through a page that displays a security warning, redirects repeatedly, or changes domains without a clear, expected explanation.
3. Confirm who operates the store
Find usable contact details
Look for a physical street address, a working email address, and a telephone number. Test the contact route before buying: send a specific question about stock, delivery, warranty, or returns and note whether the reply is coherent, timely, and tied to the listed business. A contact form alone is not equivalent to a verifiable way to reach the operator.

Search the address and phone number independently. A vacant lot, unrelated business, disposable mailbox, or number that never answers does not automatically prove fraud, but it weakens the case for sending money. Keep the question and response in writing so you can show what the seller promised.
Match the identity across pages
The legal or trading name should be consistent across the checkout page, terms, privacy notice, order confirmation, payment descriptor, and marketplace profile. Treat unexplained changes in company name, country, currency, or return destination as a reason to pause. A site that hides the operator until after payment has failed a basic transparency check.
4. Read every policy that affects your money or data
Open the shipping, returns, refunds, privacy, and terms pages before adding an item to the cart. Do not rely on a generic “easy returns” badge or a short summary beside the product.
- Delivery: Check the dispatch location, estimated delivery window, carriers, tracking, customs responsibility, and what happens when a parcel is late or lost.
- Returns: Confirm the return window, eligible conditions, exclusions, restocking fees, original packaging rules, and who pays return shipping.
- Refunds: Determine whether the refund goes to the original payment method, when processing starts, and whether shipping charges are excluded.
- Privacy: Identify what information is collected, why it is collected, how long it is retained, and whether it is shared with other companies.
- Terms: Look for the governing country, dispute process, warranty limits, seller identity, and any requirement to resolve claims through a platform procedure.
- Marketplace guarantee: If a platform offers purchase protection, read its eligibility rules, claim deadline, exclusions, and evidence requirements; a guarantee is not automatic for every listing.
Policies that are missing, copied, contradictory, written for a different country, or impossible to understand are practical risk signals. The FTC and BBB both identify clear shipping, refund, return, privacy, and terms information as a basic online-shopping check (FTC online-shopping guidance; BBB online-shopping checklist).
5. Research reputation across independent sources
Search beyond the store’s own testimonials
Search the exact seller name and domain with “review,” “complaint,” and “scam.” Use several independent sources and look for a pattern over time: undelivered orders, counterfeit products, unexplained charges, refusal to refund, or customer-service failures are more informative than a single enthusiastic comment.

Evaluate how reviews were produced
Read the text, dates, product details, and responses rather than relying on a star average. Consider whether reviewers appear to have made a verified purchase, whether many posts use identical language, and whether praise is concentrated in a short period. Reviews can be fake or incentivized, so treat them as evidence to compare, not proof. The FTC specifically recommends considering who wrote each review and checking more than one review or retailer site (FTC online-shopping guidance).
Check complaints without overreading silence
A new or small legitimate business may have little online history, while a fraudulent site can have fabricated praise. Lack of complaints is therefore not a clean bill of health. Combine the reputation result with a verifiable operator, consistent policies, a realistic offer, and a payment method that gives you recourse.
6. Test whether the offer makes sense
Compare the complete transaction, not just the advertised item price. Check the model number, dimensions, condition, included accessories, warranty, seller name, dispatch country, shipping charge, taxes, and estimated delivery. Compare the product specifications and photographs with the manufacturer’s description or other established listings. Stock-only imagery, vague specifications, and a price dramatically below comparable offers can indicate counterfeit goods or that the seller does not have the item.
Calculate the total landed cost before payment. A low headline price can disappear after shipping, customs, insurance, mandatory add-ons, or a restocking charge. Save a copy of the listing because price, stock status, and delivery promises can change after an order is placed. The FTC flags unusually low prices and stock-only imagery as reasons to investigate a marketplace seller more carefully (FTC marketplace-buying guidance).
7. Verify marketplace protections and communication
Read the platform’s buyer-protection page from the listing or help center, not from a seller-supplied screenshot. Confirm that the transaction, messages, tracking, and payment all remain within the protected workflow. Ask questions through the platform and keep the replies there. Moving a conversation to a private email, messaging app, or payment link can remove the platform’s evidence trail and guarantee eligibility.

Check the deadline for reporting non-delivery, a wrong or defective item, or an unauthorized charge. Note which documents are required and whether opening a card dispute first affects the platform claim. If the marketplace operator and seller give conflicting answers, retain both and resolve the conflict before paying.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.8. Choose a payment method with a recovery path
For ordinary online purchases in the United States, the FTC recommends a credit card because it generally lets you dispute charges when goods are missing, wrong, defective, or billed improperly (FTC online-shopping guidance). “Generally” matters: card-network rules, issuer procedures, country, transaction type, and reporting deadlines differ. Read your issuer’s dispute instructions and act promptly if something goes wrong.
| Payment route | What to verify before using it | Practical risk control |
|---|---|---|
| Credit card | Issuer dispute process, notification deadline, and any transaction exclusions. | Pay only on the verified checkout domain and retain the confirmation and statement. |
| Debit card | Your bank’s unauthorized-transaction and merchandise-dispute rules. | Use only when you understand the shorter or different protections that may apply in your jurisdiction. |
| Marketplace payment system | Eligibility, claim deadline, exclusions, and whether off-platform communication voids protection. | Keep the complete transaction inside the marketplace. |
| Gift card, wire transfer, cryptocurrency, or seller-directed payment app | Whether any meaningful reversal or dispute mechanism exists. | Do not proceed when the seller insists on one of these methods. |
The FTC says: “Never buy anything from online sellers that insist you can only pay with gift cards, by wire transfers through companies like Western Union or MoneyGram, with a payment app, or with cryptocurrency” (FTC online-shopping guidance). Do not let a discount or shipping deadline override that rule.
9. Minimize the information you disclose at checkout
Provide only information needed to authorize payment and deliver the order. A retailer normally needs a billing or delivery address, contact details for fulfilment, and payment credentials through its processor; requests for unrelated identity documents, account passwords, contacts, or extensive profiling deserve an explanation.

Use a unique password for the store account, enable multifactor authentication when offered, and avoid saving card details on a site you may never use again. Review the order total, currency, recurring-charge language, shipping address, and merchant name immediately before selecting the final purchase button. A small authorization charge or a subscription hidden in terms can become an expensive surprise if you do not inspect the final screen.

10. Preserve evidence before and after payment
Save the exact URL, seller name, product listing, model and condition, displayed price, shipping promise, policy pages, messages, order confirmation, tracking number, and payment statement. Screenshots or downloaded PDFs preserve details that may later change. Record the date and time, especially when a return or marketplace-claim deadline is short.
If the order fails
- Contact the seller through the documented channel and state the problem, the order number, the remedy you want, and a reasonable response date.
- Use the marketplace’s claim process before its deadline when the purchase occurred on a marketplace.
- Contact your card issuer or other payment provider promptly using its official number or app. Explain whether the issue is non-delivery, a materially different item, a defective item, an unauthorized charge, or a duplicate charge.
- Report suspected fraud to the Federal Trade Commission through its online-shopping guidance and seek help from your state consumer-protection office. USAGov lists complaint routes at USA.gov’s online-purchase complaints page.
Do not send additional money to “release” a refund, remove a customs hold, or unlock a package. A demand for a second payment after a failed transaction is a fresh warning, not evidence that the first payment is about to be recovered.
Compare retailers on the factors that determine risk
When two stores sell the same item, compare the dimensions that affect your ability to receive the product and recover money if the transaction fails.

A practical pre-check you can complete before checkout
- Open the address bar and verify the domain character by character.
- Confirm that the connection uses HTTPS without treating it as proof of legitimacy.
- Identify the legal or trading name, physical address, email, and phone number.
- Read shipping, return, refund, privacy, terms, and marketplace-guarantee pages.
- Search the exact seller and domain with “review,” “complaint,” and “scam” across multiple sources.
- Compare specifications, photos, seller identity, delivery, and total cost with other offers.
- Choose a payment method whose dispute and recovery rules you understand.
- Keep the transaction and messages inside the marketplace when a marketplace is involved.
- Save the listing, policies, confirmation, and payment evidence.
- Stop if any major question remains unanswered or the seller demands an unrecoverable payment.
Geography and protection limits
The FTC and USAGov guidance cited here is written for consumers in the United States. Credit-card rights, marketplace guarantees, privacy obligations, cooling-off periods, and complaint agencies vary by country and sometimes by state. If you are elsewhere, identify your card issuer’s dispute rules and your national or regional consumer-protection authority before paying. The verification method remains useful internationally, but do not assume a U.S. remedy, deadline, or agency applies to your purchase.
