Before paying for a used iPhone, check the seller’s return terms, confirm the phone is no longer tied to its previous owner, inspect its repair and battery records, and look up Apple’s coverage using the serial number. These checks provide useful evidence, but no single Apple lookup certifies that a phone is genuine in every respect or reveals its complete history.
1. Check the seller and return terms first
For an online purchase, read the return window, eligible return reasons, and return process before ordering. Ask whether the phone is certified pre-owned and what that certification actually checks. Request clear answers about physical damage, battery health, repair history, and what happens if the phone arrives locked or differs from its description. Apple recommends checking both the seller’s reliability and return policy when buying a pre-owned iPhone: Apple’s guide to buying a pre-owned iPhone.

If the seller will not allow a reasonable way to verify the phone or explain its condition, treat that as a buying risk rather than relying on a serial-number result alone.

2. Match the serial number and check Apple coverage
Ask the seller to show the serial number in Settings > General > About. Compare it with the number on the phone or original documentation when available. Avoid posting or sharing the serial number publicly.
#1 Best Overall
- This phone is unlocked and compatible with any carrier of choice on GSM and CDMA networks (e.g. AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, Verizon, US Cellular, Cricket, Metro, Tracfone, Mint Mobile, etc.).
- Please check with your carrier to verify compatibility.
- The device does not come with headphones or a SIM card. It does include a generic (Mfi certified) charging cable.
- Tested for battery health and guaranteed to have a minimum battery capacity of 80%.
Enter the serial number in Apple’s coverage lookup and compare the displayed coverage status and estimated purchase date with the seller’s claims. A serial-number lookup is a coverage-record check; it does not by itself prove the phone is genuine, undamaged, or free of fraud.
Apple says its estimated purchase date can be wrong. It may require the original sales receipt to correct the date, and recently submitted information or repair-service coverage may not yet appear. If the coverage record conflicts with what the seller says, ask for the original proof of purchase and resolve the discrepancy before paying. Apple explains the limits of the coverage record in its warranty coverage information.

3. Make sure Activation Lock is off
The phone should be erased and ready to set up. Apple’s advice is direct: “Don’t buy an iPhone if Activation Lock is enabled.” If the screen says “iPhone Locked to Owner,” or setup asks for the previous owner’s Apple Account credentials, do not complete the purchase until the seller removes the device from their account.
Ask the seller to erase the iPhone and remove it from their account. Apple identifies the Hello setup screen as an indication that the iPhone is ready for a new owner. If you are checking in person, go through setup far enough to confirm it does not request the prior owner’s credentials; do not accept a promise to remove the lock later. See Apple’s instructions for removing Activation Lock.

4. Review Parts and Service History
Once the iPhone is set up, open Settings > General > About and look for Parts and Service History. Apple documents these labels for supported repairs:
- Genuine: The repair used genuine Apple parts and processes.
- Unknown: The part may be non-genuine or may not be functioning as expected.
- Unverified: The logic board was previously replaced; Apple says this can affect features such as Apple Pay.
- Used: The part was previously used or installed in another iPhone.
The section’s availability and the parts it covers depend on the iPhone model and software. Apple says iOS 15.2 or later can show recorded supported repairs; older software provides more limited identification. If a part has been serviced more than once, only the most recent service may appear. An absent history entry is therefore not proof that the phone has never been repaired. Apple’s Parts and Service History guide explains the labels and limitations.

5. Check battery condition and test the phone
Apple’s pre-owned buying guide points buyers to battery health. On iPhone 6 and later running iOS 11.3 or later, the phone can show battery health and may recommend replacement. On newer software, check Settings > Battery > Battery Health & Charging. Review maximum capacity and any service or replacement messages.

Apple does not set a single maximum-capacity percentage that every buyer should accept. Weigh the reading against the asking price, how you expect to use the phone, and the possibility of battery replacement. When possible, test the phone in person and check its basic functions and physical condition. Apple’s pre-owned iPhone guidance covers these inspection points.

6. Compare listings using the evidence, not one green check
For two or more candidates, compare the details that affect both risk and cost:
| What to compare | What to look for |
|---|---|
| Seller and return terms | Clear return window, acceptable reasons, and a documented inspection process. |
| Coverage record | Apple’s displayed coverage and estimated purchase date, supported by an original receipt if the record conflicts with the seller’s statement. |
| Ownership status | Erased, ready-to-set-up phone with no Activation Lock or previous-owner credential request. |
| Repairs | Parts and Service History labels, interpreted in light of model, iOS version, and the history’s limits. |
| Battery and condition | Battery health messages, maximum capacity, physical condition, and successful basic-function checks. |
| Price | Asking price weighed against any repair or battery replacement you may need. |
What Apple’s warranty check does—and does not—tell you
Apple describes its coverage system as a way to help customers determine whether service is covered under an Apple limited warranty or AppleCare plan. Its displayed information may not include every right under consumer-protection laws or additional programs that could extend coverage. Those rights depend on where and how you buy the phone, so check the rules that apply to your purchase location rather than treating the lookup as a complete statement of your legal rights.
