How to Verify an ICE Officer’s Identity and Check an Immigration Warrant

Ask the officers for their names, identification numbers, and agency, then ask to see their official identification and the document authorizing the action they say they can take. Check who issued and signed the document, whom it names, and whether it authorizes arrest, removal, search, or entry. An ICE administrative warrant is not the same as a court-issued judicial warrant—and current guidance about whether an administrative warrant can authorize home entry is contested.

What to ask an officer at the door

Where it is safe to do so, ask each officer to state their name, identification number, and agency affiliation. Request to inspect official identification and ask whether they have a judicial warrant or court order. Massachusetts Attorney General service-provider guidance dated February 7, 2025, recommends asking for those identifying details and asking whether officers have a judicial warrant or court order; it is state guidance, not a universal ICE authentication procedure.

Ask to see and read the document before deciding how to respond. You can request that officers show it without opening the door or granting entry just so you can inspect it. Do not rely on a badge, uniform, seal, or document title alone to establish what the officers are authorized to do. If you cannot safely assess the situation, prioritize immediate safety and contact a qualified immigration lawyer or legal-aid organization as soon as possible.

How to check what kind of warrant it is

Start with the heading, issuer, signature, named person, and stated action. ICE’s sample Form I-200, revised September 2016, is titled “Warrant for Arrest of Alien.” It names a person, states a probable-cause determination, directs an immigration officer to arrest and take that person into custody for removal proceedings, and provides signature fields for an authorized immigration officer. It is an administrative ICE warrant, not a court-issued warrant.

What to check ICE administrative warrant Judicial warrant or court order
Issuer and signature Issued and signed by an authorized immigration officer. ICE’s sample Form I-200 shows officer signature fields. Issued by a court and signed by a judge or other authorized judicial officer. Check the issuing court and signature on the actual document.
Examples and stated purpose Forms I-200 and I-205 are administrative immigration forms. The I-200 sample directs an officer to arrest a named person for removal proceedings. Read the order’s stated authority and purpose; do not assume it authorizes every kind of search, arrest, or entry.
Person and scope Check the named person and the action the form directs. Do not assume it covers other people or locations. Check the person, address or other location, date, and scope stated in the document.
What it establishes about home entry Massachusetts Attorney General guidance dated May 29, 2025, says Forms I-200 and I-205 do not authorize entry into a home or private space without consent. A reported ICE policy position creates a significant current conflict; see the next section. A court document is not automatically authority for any action officers choose. Read what it specifically authorizes and seek legal advice if the scope is unclear.

ICE describes Forms I-200 and I-205 as administrative warrants. The document’s actual wording matters: identify whether it directs an arrest, concerns removal, or authorizes a particular search or entry. A document’s official appearance does not answer those questions.

Why the rules on ICE administrative warrants and home entry are contested

Massachusetts Attorney General guidance dated May 29, 2025, states that ICE administrative warrants, including Forms I-200 and I-205, are not judicial warrants and do not authorize entry into a home or private space without consent. That longstanding guidance is not the whole current picture: an Associated Press report published January 21, 2026, said an internal ICE memorandum dated May 12, 2025, asserted that officers could forcibly enter the home of a person with a final removal order using an I-205.

The AP report describes an internal agency memorandum, not a public regulation or court ruling. The memorandum itself was not available as a primary source here, and the report does not establish that a court has upheld the asserted policy or settle its scope. This means you should not treat the reported ICE position as a judicial decision, nor assume the older guidance is uncontested current practice. If officers say an I-205 authorizes entry into your home, seek prompt advice from a qualified immigration lawyer; do not try to resolve the legal conflict at the threshold.

What to do if the document or officer’s identity is unclear

  1. Ask for identifying details. Record names, identification numbers, and agency affiliations if safe, and request to inspect the identification and document.
  2. Check the document itself. Note its heading, issuer, signature, named person, location or scope, date, and stated action. If it is not clear whether it is a court order or an ICE administrative form, do not guess.
  3. Contact qualified legal help. If the situation is unfolding, contact an immigration lawyer or legal-aid organization promptly. Avoid relying on a document’s appearance or an officer’s verbal description alone to determine its legal scope.
  4. Use official ICE channels for case-related follow-up. ICE directs legal representatives who do not know a client’s deportation officer to contact the relevant field office or facility. ICE requires a Form G-28 on file to disclose protected case information to a representative. ICE also publishes a field-office directory.

How to locate someone who may be in immigration custody

ICE’s Online Detainee Locator System can search for people currently in ICE custody and people held by Customs and Border Protection for more than 48 hours. A name search requires the person’s exact first and last name. An A-number search requires nine digits; add leading zeros if the number has fewer than nine digits, and enter the correct country of birth. The locator is a custody lookup, not a way to authenticate an officer or determine whether a warrant is valid.

ICE’s detainer page gives 877-246-8253 as the Joint Intake Center number for complaints about detainers or civil-rights or civil-liberties violations connected to DHS activity. ICE describes a detainer as a request to a custodial agency, not a court warrant. That complaint number is not presented as a real-time officer-verification service.
