If a caller says a loved one has been kidnapped, stay calm, do not rush to pay, and verify through a separate channel. Ask to speak with the person, then call them yourself or contact someone who may know where they are. If you cannot quickly confirm their safety—or the threat may be real—contact emergency services or local police immediately. In the United States, FBI guidance says to call 911 if there is any doubt.
What to do first
- Slow the call down. Keep your voice steady. Do not confirm the loved one’s name, share family or financial details, agree to a rushed payment, or arrange an in-person meeting.
- Ask to speak directly with the person. You can ask, “How do I know my loved one is okay?” A caller’s answer, a scream, or an emotional voice is not conclusive proof.
- Verify independently. Use another phone or communication channel to call or message your loved one. Ask them to call back from their own phone. Contact trusted people who may know their whereabouts. Do not let the caller’s demand that you stay on the line prevent you from checking.
- Escalate if safety remains uncertain. Contact local emergency services or police promptly; do not delay while trying a long series of checks. In the United States, the FBI advises calling 911 if you think a kidnapping may be real or cannot resolve the uncertainty.
- Preserve information if safe. Keep the caller’s number, messages, payment instructions, and any images or videos for authorities and reporting. Do not put yourself at risk to collect evidence.
The FBI describes “virtual kidnapping” as an extortion scheme in which criminals use threats and urgency to make someone believe a loved one is in danger and to pressure them into paying. The pattern can help explain the call, but it cannot establish that a particular person is safe.

How to check whether the person is safe
Call or message through a separate channel
Use a number or account you already know, not contact details supplied by the caller. If the person does not answer, try a known messaging or social account and ask for a callback from their own phone. Contact people who may be with them or otherwise know where they are. These checks are useful only if they do not postpone contacting authorities when the threat may be real.

If you reach the alleged victim, ask a question only they would know. A private family emergency code word agreed in advance can provide useful context. Do not give the caller names, family details, or possible answers that could help them imitate the person. A code word is not a substitute for independent contact or police involvement when safety is uncertain.

Treat photos, videos, and sounds cautiously
A photo or video is not proof of life on its own. In a December 5, 2025 public service announcement, the FBI warned that criminals may alter publicly available photos or videos and send them as fake proof of life. If you receive media, save it if safe and compare it with confirmed images, but still try to contact the loved one independently. The FBI also warns that recordings may be used to simulate screams; an emotional voice or sound alone does not verify who is speaking or whether they are safe.
Warning signs that call for verification—not assumptions
- The caller tries to keep you on the line or prevents you from contacting the loved one.
- The call does not come from the loved one’s phone.
- The caller demands an immediate ransom or insists on a rushed meeting.
- The caller requests wire transfers, cryptocurrency, or peer-to-peer payments.
- The caller uses a scream, emotional voice, photo, or video as supposed proof without allowing independent contact.
These are warning signs identified in FBI advisories, not a test that proves a kidnapping is fake. If you cannot establish the person’s safety, contact authorities rather than deciding based on the caller’s behavior alone.

Reporting and preparing ahead
If you suspect a virtual-kidnapping scam, preserve the interaction details and report it to law enforcement. The FBI’s 2025 alert directs victims in the United States to report suspected incidents to the Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3). If a real kidnapping is possible or the claim remains uncertain, contact local emergency services or police immediately; do not wait to complete an online report. Outside the United States, use your local emergency number and police service.
Before a crisis, agree on a private family emergency password and keep it out of public posts. Be cautious about sharing travel dates and locations publicly. The FBI Phoenix advisory says the bureau does not keep national statistics on virtual kidnapping for ransom, so local or historical figures should not be mistaken for a current national rate.
