How to verify an AI-discovered exoplanet candidate with NASA data

An AI flag is a lead, not a discovery. To verify it, start with the target identifier and the model’s reported mission, period, epoch, and transit duration; retrieve the matching NASA mission products and current disposition; inspect the individual and folded light curves; check pixels, centroids, and pipeline diagnostics for contamination or artifacts; and then look for independent follow-up evidence. Only after those checks can you describe the object accurately as a candidate, a false positive, a validated planet, or a confirmed planet.

What verification can—and cannot—establish

An exoplanet candidate is a signal that is consistent with a planet but has not yet been proven to exist. A transit-like dip in a light curve can be caused by a planet crossing its star, but it can also come from an eclipsing binary, a nearby contaminating star, or a telescope and data-processing artifact.

NASA’s confirmation guidance treats two independent detection techniques as the normal standard: finding the same candidate with two different methods is a strong sign that the planet exists. An AI classification and a transit-shaped light curve therefore support prioritization and investigation; they do not, by themselves, establish a planet.

The practical goal of an archival check is to answer three separate questions:

  • Is the AI result tied to the correct star and mission data?
  • Does the reported signal repeat in the underlying observations and survive checks for common false-positive explanations?
  • What does NASA’s current record say about the object, and is there independent evidence beyond the original transit search?

1. Preserve exactly what the AI system reported

Before opening an archive, make a copy of the complete AI result. A short label such as “high confidence” is not enough to reproduce the claim or interpret it correctly.

Record the target and observation details

  • Mission and survey, such as TESS or Kepler.
  • Target identifier, for example a TESS Input Catalog (TIC) identifier or a Kepler identifier.
  • Model name and exact version, including a dated release when one is supplied.
  • Input data product and processing version, such as a light curve, target-pixel data, or a full-frame image.
  • Reported orbital period, transit epoch, and transit duration, with units.
  • Every confidence value, score, threshold, and class label.
  • The sector, quarter, or observing interval used by the model, if reported.

Keep the original output unchanged and make a separate working copy for notes. A model score is not automatically a probability that the object is a planet. It has that interpretation only if the model documentation defines the score, describes its calibration, and shows that the calibration applies to the same kind of data and candidate population.

Interpret an AI flag as triage

AI systems are useful for reducing a large search space to a manageable list. NASA’s description of ExoMiner++ says that its initial TESS run identified 7,000 targets as exoplanet candidates. That figure refers to candidates requiring further work, not to 7,000 confirmed planets. The distinction matters whenever an automated catalog is summarized or compared with a confirmed-planet list.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

2. Resolve the target in NASA records

Use the identifier from the AI report to locate the corresponding mission record. For TESS, NASA’s Mikulski Archive for Space Telescopes (MAST) is the primary archive for processed mission products. NASA’s HEASARC documentation describes how the TESS Science Processing Operations Center (SPOC) pipeline sends threshold-crossing events, TESS Object of Interest (TOI) dispositions, and vetting information into the archive. TESS/ExoFOP records may provide complementary candidate notes and follow-up information where applicable.

Search by identifier before searching by coordinates

Identifiers are safer than a name or sky position copied from an AI interface. Confirm that the archive record has the same TIC or Kepler identifier, right ascension and declination, and host-star name, if one is listed. A coordinate search can return a nearby star, especially when an AI report rounded the position or used a catalog from a different release.

Resolve aliases and target changes

Write down every alias shown in the mission record. A single star can have a TIC identifier, a TOI number, a catalog name, and a later planet designation. If the AI system used a custom target ID, map it to the official identifier before downloading data. Do not merge two records merely because their names look similar; verify the coordinates and catalog metadata.

3. Retrieve the data and preserve provenance

Download the products that support the claim, not just a screenshot or a smoothed plot. Archive contents and processing products change, so record the access date and release information alongside each file.

Product or record What it can answer Important limitation
Pipeline light curve Whether brightness decreases recur at the reported period and epoch after standard processing. Detrending can alter the apparent depth or shape; inspect the individual events as well as the combined view.
Target-pixel data Whether the aperture contains nearby stars, scattered light, or a moving centroid during the event. Availability and cadence vary by target and mission release.
Full-frame images Whether nearby sources or field-level artifacts could contribute flux to the target. Pixel scale and signal-to-noise can make faint neighbors difficult to assess.
Pipeline data-validation products Automated diagnostics such as transit fits, odd/even tests, centroid tests, and comparisons among sectors. A passing pipeline test is evidence to review, not a substitute for examining the underlying data.
TOI or other candidate disposition record NASA’s current label and the reasons for a candidate, false-positive, validated, or confirmed status. Labels can change after new observations or a reanalysis.

For each file, note the mission, sector or observing interval, cadence, product type, archive release, file name, and download date. Do not assume that every target has target-pixel data, full-frame products, or the same cadence. Missing products are a property of the archive record, not evidence that the AI signal is genuine or false.

4. Test whether the transit repeats in the time series

Start with the uncompressed time series. A folded plot is useful for seeing a pattern, but it can hide a single bad event, a data gap, or a period that is half or twice the true orbital period.

Fold on the reported period

Use the AI-reported epoch as the reference and fold every available observation on the reported period. Conceptually, each timestamp is converted to its phase by taking the remainder of the time since the epoch after division by the period. Plot several cycles and mark the predicted transit center. The expected result is a dip at the same phase in multiple observing intervals.

Check whether the period is expressed in days and whether the epoch uses the same time standard as the archive. A mismatch in time units or an offset between barycentric and spacecraft time can move the predicted events enough to make a real signal appear absent.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Inspect each event separately

  • Count the individual dips that fall within the observing windows.
  • Check that their depths, durations, and ingress and egress shapes are broadly consistent.
  • Mark data gaps, scattered-light intervals, momentum-dump artifacts, and other quality flags.
  • Look for a single deep event that is carrying the entire folded detection.
  • Compare the signal in separate sectors or quarters instead of treating all points as one homogeneous series.

A plausible planetary transit is usually shallow relative to the star’s total brightness and repeats at predictable intervals, but there is no universal depth or signal-to-noise cutoff that can replace context. Stellar variability, detrending choices, cadence, and the number of observed events all affect the apparent quality of a detection.

Check period alternatives

Eclipsing binaries commonly produce two eclipses per orbital cycle. If the AI period places alternating deep and shallow events on top of one another, fold the data at twice that period and inspect the primary and secondary events separately. Conversely, a period that is twice the true value can make a genuine sequence appear to have missing transits. Record which period convention you used and whether an alternative produces a more coherent pattern.

5. Test the main false-positive explanations

Contamination from nearby stars

Open the target-pixel or full-frame view and outline the aperture used for the light curve. Identify cataloged stars inside or close to that aperture. A neighboring eclipsing binary can dilute its eclipse into a shallow, planet-like dip on the target’s light curve.

Compare the apparent source location in and out of transit. A centroid shift toward a nearby star, or a transit-shaped signal that is stronger when the aperture is moved, points to contamination rather than a planet orbiting the named target. Pipeline centroid diagnostics can help, but inspect the pixel-level context whenever it is available.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Eclipsing-binary signatures

  • Secondary eclipses at a distinct phase.
  • Different depths for odd- and even-numbered events.
  • V-shaped or unusually long events that are inconsistent with the fitted planetary geometry.
  • Large changes in depth when the aperture or detrending method changes.

None of these features is conclusive alone. Together they determine which astrophysical explanations still need follow-up.

Instrumental and processing artifacts

Check spacecraft quality flags and compare the candidate events with known systematics in the same observing interval. A dip that appears only during a data-quality problem, at the edge of a gap, or in one detector region deserves skepticism. Re-run the inspection with the least processed product available to you and compare it with the pipeline light curve. If the signal disappears when a reasonable detrending choice changes, report that sensitivity instead of presenting a single plot as definitive.

Use the false-positive rate in context

NASA’s 2022 report on the Planet Patrol citizen-science project said that volunteers classified 144 of the first 999 proposed TESS planets as false positives. That is a result for that examined batch, not a universal false-positive rate for TESS or for AI-selected targets. The same report quotes lead author Luca Cacciapuoti saying, "We expect to find five astrophysical false positive for every true planet candidate in TESS Full Frame images." The statement applies to the relevant TESS Full Frame Image context and should not be generalized to every mission, pipeline, or candidate list.

6. Read the official vetting and disposition record

After inspecting the data, read the current NASA and associated candidate records. A disposition is a status at a particular time, not a permanent property of the target.

Label or outcome Meaning for your article
Candidate or TOI The signal is promising enough for continued analysis or follow-up, but a planet has not been established.
False positive The available evidence favors an eclipsing binary, contaminating source, instrumental artifact, or another non-planet explanation.
Validated Statistical or population-level analysis has reduced the false-positive probability enough for the stated validation framework; read the record for its assumptions and scope.
Confirmed Independent evidence has established the planet according to the reporting team’s criteria, commonly including a second detection method.

Copy the date, source, and explanation attached to the status. If the archive and a third-party page disagree, report the discrepancy and prefer the most recent official record while explaining which version you used.

Kepler-1658b illustrates why this check matters: NASA has documented a status change after reanalysis. New measurements, improved understanding of the host star, or a revised interpretation of the signal can change how an object is classified.

7. Separate a credible signal from a confirmed planet

At this point, write two conclusions rather than one. The first should describe the archival signal: for example, that repeated dips at the reported period are present in the available light curve and that no obvious centroid shift was found. The second should state what remains unresolved: contamination, an eclipsing-binary interpretation, stellar parameters, or the lack of an independent detection.

Confirmation normally requires a second technique. Depending on the target and observing resources, that can include an independent transit data set, radial-velocity measurements, or another method that tests the planetary interpretation rather than repeating the same automated classification. Cite the actual follow-up record and its limitations. A high AI score, a clean folded plot, and a pipeline “pass” are still one line of evidence if they all derive from the same transit data.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

NASA’s ExoMiner++ coverage explicitly describes its flagged objects as candidates needing follow-up observations. That wording is the correct model for reporting an AI-discovered target until independent evidence and an official disposition support a stronger claim.

How to compare several AI-flagged candidates

When an AI system produces a list, compare candidates using aligned evidence rather than ranking raw scores from different models or releases.

Comparison axis Questions to ask
Data provenance Which mission, sectors or quarters, cadence, pipeline release, and archive products support the candidate?
Repeatability How many individual events are observed, and do their depths and durations agree?
Contamination risk Are nearby sources inside the aperture, and do centroids move during transit?
Binary diagnostics Are there secondary eclipses, odd/even differences, or a period that becomes more coherent when doubled?
Independent evidence Is there follow-up using a genuinely different technique, and what is its quality?
Official status What is the current candidate, false-positive, validated, or confirmed disposition, and when was it updated?
AI comparability Are model versions, input products, score definitions, and calibration data aligned?

A candidate with more observations is not automatically a planet. More data are valuable because they can distinguish competing explanations; state which false-positive hypothesis each additional observation addresses.

A reproducible verification record

Save a short report with enough detail for another reader to repeat the check:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Copy the target identifier, aliases, coordinates, mission, and the AI model and version.
  2. Transcribe the reported period, epoch, duration, score, and score definition or calibration reference.
  3. List every NASA archive product examined, including sector or quarter, cadence, release, file name, and access date.
  4. Describe the folding period and epoch, the number of usable events, data gaps, and any alternate period tested.
  5. Record pixel, aperture, centroid, odd/even, secondary-eclipse, and data-quality findings.
  6. Quote the current official disposition and the date of the record you consulted.
  7. List independent follow-up observations, or state explicitly that none was found.
  8. Give a conclusion with separate statements for signal credibility, remaining false-positive explanations, and confirmation status.

Attach the original AI output and the plots or tables used for the decision. If a product was unavailable, say so; do not infer a negative result from a missing file.

Common mistakes and how to correct them

Calling the AI score a planet probability

Why it fails: scores can be uncalibrated rankings or class margins.

Correction: report the score exactly as labeled and explain whether the model documentation supports a probability interpretation for this data set.

Checking only a folded, smoothed light curve

Why it fails: smoothing can hide a single artifact, a data gap, or inconsistent event shapes.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Correction: inspect rawer products and each event in time order before judging the folded pattern.

Ignoring the aperture and nearby stars

Why it fails: a neighboring eclipsing binary can mimic a transit after dilution.

Correction: inspect target pixels, full-frame context, and centroid behavior, then document which sources fall inside the aperture.

Treating a catalog label as permanent

Why it fails: dispositions change after reanalysis or new observations.

Free tools Windows power users keep installed

One-click scans. No signup required.

Correction: record the current status, date, and reason from the live archive record.

Counting two analyses of the same light curve as independent confirmation

Why it fails: two algorithms can share the same artifact and therefore are not independent tests.

Correction: identify the observing data and physical method behind every claimed follow-up result.

What a careful final statement looks like

A defensible write-up names the star, mission data, release, AI model and version, diagnostics, and current disposition. It might conclude that the archive contains a repeatable transit-like signal at the reported period, that no obvious contamination was found in the available pixel data, and that the object remains a candidate because independent confirmation is absent. If the record instead lists a false-positive disposition, report that outcome and the stated explanation even when the AI score was high.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

This wording keeps the useful part of an AI discovery—the ability to find and prioritize signals—while preserving the evidentiary boundary NASA applies between a candidate and a confirmed exoplanet.
