The reliable way to check an image is to look for a supported provenance signal, then verify the image’s source and context separately. C2PA Content Credentials can show a signed origin and edit history. Google’s SynthID can indicate that supported Google AI systems generated or edited media. A positive result is limited to what that signal identifies; a negative result only means that the selected tool found nothing it supports.
What provenance verification can—and cannot—tell you
Image verification tools answer a narrower question than “Is this picture real?” They can reveal whether a file carries a cryptographically signed provenance record, or whether a supported watermark is detectable. They do not independently prove that the depicted event happened, that the scene is accurately captioned, or that the image is being shown in the right context.

That distinction matters because an authentic camera photograph can be misleading, while an AI-generated illustration can accurately represent an idea. Treat provenance as one layer of evidence in a broader verification process.

A record may identify the creator or service, composition steps, edits and whether AI use was declared. C2PA can describe AI and non-AI media.
- SynthID is a watermark embedded in supported media by participating Google AI systems. A detected watermark indicates that some or all of the supported media was generated or edited by those systems.
- A negative check means only that the selected verifier did not detect a supported signal. The file may have lost metadata, the watermark may have been degraded, or the image may have been made by an unsupported generator.
Use precise language in a report: “The verifier found a Content Credential issued by …” or “Gemini detected a SynthID watermark.” Avoid claims such as “This image is true,” “This is definitely human-made,” or “This is fake” unless independent evidence supports them.

Start with the best copy of the image
Preserve the original file before checking it. Download the file from the creator or publisher when possible instead of saving a screenshot from a social network. Keep an untouched copy and record where and when you obtained it.
Editing, conversion, cropping and ordinary platform processing can remove metadata or alter the file in ways that affect verification. C2PA credentials are attached to a file and are not guaranteed to survive metadata-stripping workflows. SynthID is embedded in the media itself and is designed to survive common transformations, but Google says many alterations can still prevent detection.
- Do not open and re-save the only copy in an editor before checking it.
- Keep the original extension and file bytes when you can.
- Save the page URL, account name, caption, publication date and any accompanying claim separately from the image.
- If you only have a screenshot, retain it, but label it as a transformed copy in your notes.

- Open the public image-verification page. Use the current upload control shown there.
- Submit one file. OpenAI recommends checking one image at a time.
- Use the original file. Do not crop or convert it before submission if the original is available. A screenshot or re-encoded copy may no longer carry the relevant information.
- Read the result literally. The page may identify a Content Credential, a supported watermark signal, or no supported signal. Record the exact wording and any issuer or tool information shown.
- Preserve the result with your verification notes. Save the file hash or an untouched copy, the date of the check and the claim you were testing.
OpenAI’s stated limitation is explicit: a detected signal indicates that content originated from OpenAI tools, but it does not determine whether the content is accurate or presented in the correct context. A “not detected” result does not rule out another provider, a transformed file or a watermark that the service cannot currently recognize.
How to check an image with Gemini
Gemini can check for Google’s SynthID and can display compatible Content Credentials. Its help documentation gives separate handling advice for original files and screenshots.
Recommended Free Tools
- Open Gemini’s image-verification function. Follow the current upload and account prompts.
- Submit one file per check. Gemini’s documented file and account limits apply, so a large batch may need to be processed as individual checks over several sessions.
- Prefer the original image. If the only available copy is a screenshot, crop tightly around the image as Google recommends. Keep the uncropped screenshot as evidence too.
- Inspect both result types. Gemini may report a SynthID match, show compatible Content Credentials, or report that it found no supported signal.
- Note compatibility warnings. A credential created by an unsupported product or an incompatible credential version may not be considered valid or trusted by Gemini.
A SynthID match means that the checked media contains a watermark associated with supported Google AI models. It does not identify every possible generator, establish that the entire file was generated, or prove that the accompanying caption is true.
How to interpret Content Credentials
What the record contains
C2PA is an open standard for recording the origin and history of digital content. A credential can identify the organization that supplied and cryptographically signed the record, describe how media was composed, list subsequent edits and indicate AI use when that information was included by the participating tool.
The signature helps reveal unauthorized changes to the credentialed history. If the record is altered without an appropriate update, verification can fail or show that the chain is no longer intact.

What the record does not contain
A credential is not a truth certificate. It does not independently confirm that a signer’s description is honest, that a photographed event occurred, or that the file’s caption and location are correct. It is evidence about the recorded production chain, not an eyewitness account.

Why a credential may be missing
Creation tools must emit provenance information, later editors must preserve it and receiving platforms must keep and interpret it. Any break in that chain can remove the visible record. Metadata stripping is a documented failure mode, so the absence of a credential should never be treated as evidence that a human camera created the image.
How SynthID differs from file metadata
SynthID is embedded in supported media rather than simply appended as ordinary file metadata. Google says the watermark generally remains after common transformations, which gives it a different failure pattern from a credential stored in metadata. However, many alterations can prevent detection, and verification normally depends on the provider’s systems.
The scope is also provider-specific. Detecting SynthID supports a conclusion about generation or editing by participating Google AI systems; it does not identify images made by unrelated services. Conversely, failing to detect SynthID does not rule out another watermark, a C2PA record or an unsupported AI generator.
Google reported that more than 20 billion pieces of AI-generated content had been watermarked with SynthID as of its November 20, 2025 announcement. That is Google’s reported figure, not an independently audited count, and it does not mean every AI-generated image carries the watermark.

What a positive, negative or inconclusive result means
Positive C2PA result
State the issuer, the recorded actions and the fact that the credential was valid or invalid as displayed. For example: “The file contains a signed Content Credential identifying the issuing service and listing an AI-assisted edit.” Do not extend that statement into a claim about the scene’s factual accuracy.
Positive SynthID result
State that the verifier detected a watermark associated with supported Google AI generation or editing. The result is bounded to the media and systems covered by that check; it is not a universal label for all synthetic media.
No supported signal
Use wording such as “This verifier did not detect a supported signal.” The result may reflect stripped metadata, a degraded watermark, an older file, an unsupported provider or a format the service cannot interpret. It is inconclusive about whether a person or an AI system made the image.
Credential warning or failed signature
Treat a warning as a reason to investigate the file’s chain, not as proof of manipulation. Compare the original download with the copy you checked, look for later edits and ask the publisher for the source file.

Corroborate the image and its context
Provenance answers “where did this file’s recorded history come from?” Contextual verification answers “what does this scene show, when and where did it happen, and is the claim accurate?” You need both for journalism, research and high-impact decisions.
Best Value
- Trace the earliest publication. Identify the first account, newsroom or organization to post the image and compare its caption with later reposts.
- Check dates and locations. Compare the claimed event with public schedules, weather, landmarks, maps and independent reporting.
- Run a reverse-image search. Look for older appearances, altered captions, stock images or unrelated events using the same photograph.
- Inspect the image visually. Look for inconsistent reflections, repeated textures, impossible text, mismatched shadows or anatomy that warrants further checking. None of these clues is conclusive alone.
- Analyze available metadata. Record camera, software, creation and modification fields when present, but remember that metadata can be removed or rewritten.
- Contact the source. Request the original file, the creation workflow and any earlier versions when the stakes justify it.
Using the OpenAI Content Provenance API
Developers and organizations can use OpenAI’s Content Provenance API where an automated workflow is appropriate. The same interpretive limits apply: the API can report supported provenance signals, but it is not a universal detector and does not establish the truth of the depicted scene.
Build an audit trail around the API response. Store the original file, submission time, tool version or endpoint information shown by the service, returned signal details and the human decision that followed. Restrict automated labels to the result’s actual scope—for example, “supported OpenAI provenance detected”—rather than a broad “AI image” category.
A repeatable verification checklist
- Obtain and preserve the highest-quality original file available.
- Record the source account, page, caption, date and claim.
- Choose a verifier whose signal matches the suspected provider: C2PA, OpenAI-supported signals or Google SynthID.
- Submit one file without unnecessary cropping, conversion or re-saving.
- Write down exactly what the verifier found, including issuer and warnings.
- Check the same original with another compatible route when the decision is consequential.
- Trace the earliest publication and perform reverse-image, metadata and visual checks.
- Publish a narrow conclusion that distinguishes provenance from truth and a negative result from proof of human authorship.
Common situations and the safest response
A social post contains only a screenshot
Check the screenshot if that is all you have, but expect some provenance information to be missing. Crop tightly around the image for Gemini as recommended, retain the full screenshot and seek the original upload before drawing a conclusion.
The image has a Content Credential but shows an implausible event
Report the credential as evidence of the file’s recorded production history, then investigate the event independently. A signed chain cannot make an inaccurate caption true.
Neither tool detects anything
Report “no supported signal detected” and continue with source tracing, reverse-image search, metadata review and corroborating reports. Do not label the image human-made solely on that basis.
The two tools disagree
Check whether you submitted identical files, whether one service supports the issuer or credential version and whether the file was transformed between checks. Preserve both outputs and describe each tool’s scope rather than forcing a single universal verdict.
Quick Recap
Key takeaways for publication and review
- C2PA records signed origin and edit information for AI and non-AI media.
- SynthID is a provider-specific watermark for supported Google AI generation or editing.
- Original files offer the best chance of retaining credentials and detectable signals.
- Positive results establish a limited provenance fact, not the truth of the scene.
- Negative results mean only that the chosen verifier found no signal it supports.
- Contextual checks remain necessary before publishing, removing content or making a high-impact decision.
