Treat it as a list of claims, then check each important claim against the original paper. Verify that every cited work exists and has the right metadata; read the relevant methods, results, tables, figures, discussion and limitations; check that the paper’s population, measure, date and uncertainty match the wording; and qualify, correct or remove anything the source does not support.
The amount of checking should match the consequence of being wrong. A casual explanation may need a quick source and scope check. A clinical, legal, policy, academic or safety-critical answer needs a documented, claim-by-claim audit.

Why a plausible citation is not proof
An AI answer can name a real paper and still misrepresent it. A citation may point to a relevant topic while supporting a different population, outcome, time period or conclusion. Metadata can be incomplete, two references can be blended together, or a nonexistent work can be presented in convincing format. A real paper can also be obsolete, corrected, withdrawn or retracted.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFluent wording, confidence and repetition do not establish accuracy. The Technical University of Munich’s AI-literacy guidance puts the standard plainly: “Treat a generated answer as a set of claims to inspect, with each important claim checked against suitable evidence.” Grounding or retrieval only shows that material was supplied to a system; it does not prove that the material was retrieved or interpreted correctly.

Verification therefore has two separate questions:
- Does the source exist and match the citation?
- Does that source support this exact statement, with its stated scope and uncertainty?
1. Break the answer into checkable claims
Do not fact-check an entire paragraph as one unit. Copy the answer into a document and split it wherever a separate fact, inference or conclusion appears. Mark claims that contain numbers, quotations, dates, causal language, comparisons, assumptions or recommendations.
| Answer element | What to isolate | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Factual statement | Who or what was observed, and what happened | A broad sentence may hide a narrower study population or setting |
| Number or statistic | Value, denominator, units, population and time period | A result for the study sample can be mistaken for a population-wide rate |
| Quotation | Every quoted word, speaker or author, and surrounding passage | Small wording changes can reverse meaning or remove a qualification |
| Reference | Authors, title, venue, year, volume, issue and DOI or link | A complete-looking citation may still be fabricated or combined |
| Conclusion | What the study measured versus what the answer infers | Association can be incorrectly rewritten as causation |
| Recommendation | Advice, condition, exception and intended audience | A conditional finding can become an unsafe universal rule |
Prioritize by consequence
Check first what could change a decision or cause harm. A minor background detail can wait while you verify a dosage claim, eligibility rule, security instruction or statement used in a paper. The Technical University of Munich recommends matching the amount of checking to the consequence of error. Record that priority so a later reader understands why some claims received deeper review.
2. Find the original publication independently
Start from the paper, not from the AI’s summary. Follow a DOI or link supplied in the answer, then search the exact title and author combination in a library catalogue or bibliographic database. If the link fails, search by title, author and venue separately. Do not accept a search result merely because its wording resembles the citation.
- Copy the proposed title into a library catalogue or scholarly index.
- Compare the author list, title, journal or conference, publication year and DOI with the record you find.
- Open the publisher’s or repository’s record and confirm that it resolves to the same work.
- Save the stable record and the full paper you actually consulted.
Oxford’s Bodleian Libraries gives a useful rule: “You should not include anything in your references or bibliography that you have not actually consulted.” That means a reference suggested by an AI belongs in your working list only after you have opened and checked it yourself. A secondary summary, another chatbot response or a citation scraped from an unverified page is not a substitute for the original text.
3. Confirm bibliographic identity and publication status
Before interpreting a result, establish exactly which version you are reading. Compare the following fields against the original record:

- Every author name and the author order, where relevant.
- The exact title, including subtitle and study type.
- Journal, conference or repository name.
- Publication year, volume, issue and page or article number, when available.
- DOI or other persistent identifier.
- Version, update date or preprint status.
Then check whether the work has been corrected, superseded, withdrawn or retracted. A paper can remain easy to find after its status changes. Also check whether the AI has silently switched between a preprint and a peer-reviewed edition, or between an original study and a later correction.
Check fit before support
A paper may be genuine but unsuitable for the claim. Compare its population, jurisdiction, language, age range, setting, intervention or exposure, comparison group, outcome and time period with the answer. A result from one country, software version, laboratory condition or historical period cannot automatically answer a question about another.
4. Read the evidence in context
Reading only an abstract is often insufficient. Use the abstract to locate the relevant passage, then inspect the sections that establish how the result was produced and qualified.
- Methods: Identify the design, recruitment, sample size, inclusion criteria, intervention or exposure, comparison and measurement method. Note whether the design can establish causation or only an association.
- Results: Find the exact outcome in the text, table or figure. Check which analysis produced it and whether the reported estimate has uncertainty, missing data or subgroup restrictions.
- Discussion: Compare the authors’ interpretation with the AI’s wording. Authors may describe a result as preliminary, context-dependent or exploratory even when the generated answer sounds definitive.
- Limitations: Record constraints that change how far the finding can be generalized, such as a small or selected sample, short follow-up, measurement error, unblinded procedures or unresolved confounding.
Oxford advises reading beyond a summary and checking methods and limitations. This is where many overstatements become visible: the paper measured a proxy rather than the claimed outcome, found a correlation rather than an effect, or reported a result only under a specified condition.
5. Match the claim to the source precisely
Write the AI’s statement beside the passage, table or figure that is supposed to support it. Compare the parts that determine meaning rather than matching keywords.

| Dimension | Question to ask | Common distortion |
|---|---|---|
| Population | Who was actually studied? | A selected sample is presented as everyone |
| Intervention or exposure | What was done or observed, and under what conditions? | A laboratory or controlled condition is presented as ordinary use |
| Comparison | What was the result compared with? | No-treatment, baseline and alternative-treatment groups are treated as interchangeable |
| Outcome | What did the researchers measure? | A proxy, self-report or short-term marker is renamed as a broader outcome |
| Time | When was the result measured? | A temporary effect is stated as a lasting one |
| Uncertainty | What confidence interval, range, error or qualification accompanies it? | Uncertainty disappears from a single-point claim |
| Scope | Where and to whom does the conclusion apply? | A local or version-specific finding becomes a universal rule |
Separate association from causation
Words such as “causes,” “leads to,” “prevents” and “proves” require a design and analysis capable of supporting them. If the paper reports an association, preserve that wording. If the authors make a causal interpretation subject to assumptions, include those assumptions. Never upgrade a conditional or observational result merely because the AI used a stronger verb.

References and citations
Confirm existence, exact metadata, DOI or link resolution and the publication’s current status. Check that the cited work is the one actually consulted, not a similarly titled item. Oxford specifically warns against putting unconsulted works in a bibliography.
Direct quotations
Locate the quoted passage in the original paper and compare every word. Preserve the author or speaker attribution and enough surrounding context to show what the sentence qualifies or refers to. Do not rely on a quotation copied from another AI answer. If the wording cannot be located, remove quotation marks and treat the statement as unverified rather than guessing at the source.
Statistics and numerical findings
Trace each number to a results paragraph, table or figure. Check the denominator, units, population, missing observations, uncertainty and whether the value describes the study sample or a broader population. A percentage without its denominator can describe a very different result from the one implied by the answer.
Conclusions
Compare the conclusion with the methods and limitations. Ask what was measured, what was inferred and what alternative explanations remain. For consequential conclusions, look for corroborating or challenging evidence rather than treating one paper as the final word.

7. Look for omitted context and corroboration
Even a correctly cited paper can be a poor answer to the reader’s question. Check whether the AI omitted a limitation, counterevidence, subgroup difference, adverse result or newer applicable version. A summary can accurately repeat an obsolete passage while misleading readers about the current evidence.
Search for later corrections, follow-up studies, systematic reviews or authoritative guidance when the decision warrants it. The aim is not to collect an impressive bibliography; it is to determine whether the cited passage remains applicable and whether important contrary information changes the answer.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.8. Make a transparent keep, revise or reject decision
For every claim, choose one outcome:
- Keep: The original source directly supports the wording, scope and uncertainty.
- Revise: The source supports a narrower or more qualified statement. Rewrite it to match the evidence.
- Reject: The source does not support it, the citation cannot be verified, or the claim conflicts with the paper’s status or findings.
Maintain a compact audit trail with five fields: claim, source location, scope or date, decision and notes about the change. Cite the evidence you actually consulted. This record lets another person reproduce your check without trusting the AI’s confidence.
9. Scale the workflow to the risk
Low-consequence explanation
Verify that the paper exists, that its metadata matches and that the central sentence is supported by the abstract or relevant result. Add a qualification if the scope is narrower than the answer.
Important professional or educational work
Check methods, results, limitations, quotations and numbers individually. Confirm the source status and preserve an audit trail. Have a subject-matter reader review claims that depend on specialized interpretation.
Best Value
High-consequence decision
Read the complete relevant sections, consult current guidance and corroborating evidence, and obtain qualified human review. Do not let an AI summary substitute for the original paper or for professional judgment.
10. Understand the limits of AI-assisted checking
Using one AI system to verify another answer can reproduce the same mistake. A fluent explanation is not independent evidence, and repeated wording can reflect a systematic error rather than confirmation. Retrieval can improve access to a source while still failing to select the right passage or preserve its qualification.
Use AI to generate a list of claims, locate terms to search for or organize notes, but make the acceptance decision from the original evidence. When the source is unavailable, illegible or ambiguous, label the claim as unverified instead of filling the gap with a plausible inference.

11. Publication, authorship and disclosure responsibilities
For scientific work, the human author remains responsible for accuracy and integrity. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention states that AI tools cannot be authors or coauthors and should not be cited as authors or primary sources. It also notes that citation inaccuracies can constitute research misconduct. Follow the current requirements of the relevant institution, funder, journal or conference, because disclosure rules vary and can change.
European Commission guidance likewise warns that a paper can exist with correct metadata while an AI-generated summary of it is wrong. It recommends transparency for substantial AI use and attention to reproducibility, bias, privacy, confidentiality and intellectual property. Disclose meaningful assistance when the applicable policy requires it, and never claim to have consulted a source you did not open.
12. A worked claim-checking example
Suppose an AI writes: “The study proves that an intervention improves long-term outcomes for all adults.” Do not accept or reject that sentence as a block. Split it into testable parts:
- There is a study about the intervention.
- The study measured an outcome that matches “long-term outcomes.”
- The design supports the word “proves.”
- The population includes all adults.
- The result was favorable and applies beyond the study conditions.
Find the original paper, identify its design and follow-up period, then locate the outcome in the results. If it studied a selected group for a short period and reported an association, a defensible revision might describe that narrower population, time frame and relationship. If no matching paper exists or the result is absent, reject the sentence and record why. The example illustrates the method; it is not a claim about any particular study.

13. Printable verification checklist
- Have I split the answer into separate factual, numerical, quoted and inferential claims?
- Have I prioritized claims according to the harm or cost of being wrong?
- Did I find the original publication independently?
- Do the authors, title, venue, year, volume, issue and DOI match?
- Is the paper current, corrected, superseded, withdrawn or retracted?
- Does its population, setting, version and time period fit the claim?
- Did I read the relevant methods, results, tables, figures, discussion and limitations?
- Does the exact passage support the wording, including uncertainty and exceptions?
- Did I check quotations word for word and numbers against their denominator and units?
- Did I look for omitted context, newer evidence or credible counterevidence?
- Did I keep, revise or reject each claim and record the source location?
- Have I cited only sources I actually consulted and followed the applicable disclosure policy?
The standard to use
An AI-generated answer becomes usable only after its important claims survive comparison with the original evidence. Verify identity first, support second, and scope and uncertainty throughout. Where the paper does not justify the wording, narrow it, qualify it or remove it; confidence is never a replacement for evidence.
