Verify a UFO video by separating three questions that are often conflated: where the file first appeared online, when the scene was actually recorded, and where the camera was located. Preserve the original claim, find earlier copies, inspect frame-level and file evidence, match multiple landmarks against imagery dated near the event, and report only what the evidence supports. A successful verification can establish provenance or expose a misleading caption; it cannot, by itself, prove that an object is extraterrestrial.
What “verified” means in a UFO video
A platform’s timestamp is a publication event. It tells you when that account uploaded or reposted a file, not necessarily when a camera captured the scene. A location tag is similarly an assertion until visible features match an independently dated map, satellite, or ground-level image. Treating upload time, capture time, and camera position as separate variables prevents the most common errors.

Use a claim ledger before opening investigative tools. Write down the exact wording—such as “recorded over Phoenix on 12 August 2024”—along with the account name, video URL, caption, displayed publication time, and any claim about the object. Preserve the surrounding post, replies, edits, and hashtags. If the platform later changes the caption or removes the account, your saved context shows what was actually asserted.

| Where did this copy come from? | Earlier posts, matching keyframes, upload histories, account archives, and unchanged captions. | That the earliest copy is the original recording; an earlier repost may already have been copied from an unavailable source. |
| When was the scene recorded? | Original file metadata, weather and lighting consistency, dated background events, and imagery showing when a feature existed. | Capture time from a repost timestamp or from metadata that has not been corroborated. |
| Where was the camera? | Several distinctive buildings, roads, terrain features, skyline shapes, signs, or utility structures matched to dated imagery. | The nature of the object or the truth of an extraordinary interpretation. |
| What is visible? | Frame-by-frame inspection, object motion, perspective, edits, reflections, and audio context. | Intent, identity, or extraterrestrial origin when the video is ambiguous. |
1. Preserve the claim and the best available file
Capture context before analyzing pixels
Save the post page as a PDF or screenshot and record the account handle exactly as displayed. Note the platform’s time zone if it shows one; otherwise record that the zone is unknown. Copy the caption verbatim, including punctuation, emojis, hashtags, and claims such as “live,” “just happened,” or “from 1997.” Save comments that identify a witness, aircraft route, weather event, or earlier source, but label them as unverified statements.

Download a lawful copy for analysis when the platform and rights holder permit it. Keep the original file untouched and create a working copy for frame extraction or transcoding. Record the filename, download date, file size, and the method used to obtain it. Re-encoding by a social platform can remove metadata and alter frame timing, so retain every version you can obtain rather than replacing one with another.
Build a version log
Give each copy an identifier such as V1_original-post, V2_earlier-account, or V3_downloaded-repost. For each version, record duration, dimensions, frame rate if reported, audio presence, visible watermarks, and any cuts. A simple hash of an unchanged file can show that two downloads are identical, while a different hash only proves that the bytes differ—it does not prove that the scene differs.
- Keep the URL and account for every version.
- Record whether the platform labels it as edited, stitched, or generated.
- Note visible cropping, mirroring, speed changes, subtitles, logos, and borders.
- Do not overwrite an original with a cleaned-up or stabilized export.
- Respect privacy, copyright, and platform terms when downloading or sharing files.
2. Find earlier appearances and duplicate footage
Extract useful keyframes
Choose several sharp frames rather than one thumbnail. Include a frame with the object, one with the widest background, and frames containing signs, logos, distinctive architecture, subtitles, or a transition. If the video changes scenes, extract frames on both sides of each cut. A frame showing only a bright dot is usually a poor search image; a frame that includes a roofline, tower, or unusual cloud pattern gives a matching system more context.
The InVID verification workflow combines keyframe extraction, duplicate searches, social searches, contextual checks, metadata inspection, location and time assessment, historical weather, and frame-level review. Its project documentation describes these functions, but browser support and access to individual platforms can change. Treat any result as a lead that must be checked against the actual files.
Search more than one way
- Run a reverse-image search on an uncropped frame.
- Repeat with a crop around the background feature and another around the object.
- Try a frame with subtitles or a watermark; text often leads to a different copy than the object itself.
- Search distinctive phrases from the caption in quotation marks, then search without the quoted wording to catch paraphrases.
- Look for the same sequence on video platforms, news pages, forums, and archived posts.
- Compare candidate copies side by side, checking the first frame, cut points, duration, audio, compression patterns, and watermarks.
Bellingcat’s Advanced Guide on Verifying Video Content (30 June 2017) warns that reverse-image search is imperfect. Mirroring, cropping, color adjustments, added text, and other transformations can prevent a match. A successful match is evidence that the frame appeared elsewhere; a failed search is not evidence that the current uploader filmed it.
Recognize what an earlier copy proves
An earlier timestamp narrows the latest possible date for that particular online appearance. It does not automatically establish the recording date. A video uploaded in 2018 could depict a 2012 event, and a post dated 2024 could be the first discoverable upload of an older file. The strongest provenance chain links a stable file or sequence of frames through multiple posts while explaining gaps and transformations.

| Finding | Reasonable interpretation | Overclaim to avoid |
|---|---|---|
| Identical frames under a different account, dated earlier | The current post is a repost or derives from an older online copy. | The earlier account is necessarily the camera operator. |
| Same scene, but mirrored or cropped | Likely related footage; compare details and sequence order. | Exact identity without checking frame content. |
| No reverse-search results | No match was found in the services and indexes tested. | The uploader is original or the event is unprecedented. |
| Only a screenshot or short excerpt matches | The current file may be edited from a longer source. | The screenshot proves the entire video is authentic. |
3. Inspect frames, edits, and surrounding context
Review the sequence, not just the object
Step through the video frame by frame around the first appearance, any apparent acceleration, and every cut. Mark moments where the camera pans, zooms, loses focus, or passes behind an obstruction. A jump in background position can indicate an edit rather than sudden object motion. Stabilization, rolling-shutter distortion, autofocus hunting, digital zoom, and low-light noise can make an ordinary distant object appear to move erratically.

Check whether the object remains in a fixed position relative to the camera’s optical artifacts. Lens flare, dust, insects, reflections, and internal sensor blooming often move differently from distant scenery. This observation does not identify an object by itself, but it can distinguish an image artifact from something outside the lens.
Use environmental clues
- Language: road signs, storefronts, subtitles, emergency announcements, and spoken accents can support or contradict a claimed country.
- Weather: cloud cover, precipitation, shadows, haze, and snow should be compatible with historical observations for the claimed time and place.
- Light: shadow direction and length can constrain the sun’s position; artificial lights can reveal whether the scene is day or night.
- Architecture and infrastructure: roof shapes, road markings, poles, bridges, antennas, and construction styles may narrow the region.
- Sound: sirens, announcements, traffic, and wind can provide context, but audio may be dubbed, delayed, or taken from another source.
- Editing: captions that appear only after a cut, mismatched audio, or a sudden change in compression can identify later additions.
Do not treat a familiar-looking landscape as a geolocation. Record the observation (“a four-lane road runs below the camera”) separately from the inference (“this is a particular city highway”). Keeping those statements distinct makes later corrections possible.
4. Assess the date without confusing upload and capture
Start with file metadata, but treat it as a clue
If you have the least-processed file, inspect its container and stream metadata: creation fields, time zone, encoder, frame rate, dimensions, and software tags. A phone may store a capture timestamp, while a screen recording or social download may show an export time or no date at all. Metadata can be rewritten, stripped, or inherited from an editing application. The InVID documentation describes metadata and rights-related tools, but metadata alone is not a standalone proof of capture date.
Compare metadata across versions. A date present only in a later transcode is more likely to describe the export than the camera event. A consistent set of camera-model and time fields in an untouched file is more useful, yet it still needs independent corroboration.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsCorroborate with dated events and conditions
- List every date implied by the claim, caption, comments, metadata, and earliest post.
- Check whether visible weather, shadows, moon phase, seasonal vegetation, or temporary construction fits each candidate date.
- Search for dated news, public events, aircraft activity, launches, fires, or outages visible or audible in the scene.
- Compare the scene with satellite or street-level imagery from before and after the claimed date. A newly built roof, demolished structure, or changed road layout can establish a time window.
- Record contradictions explicitly, such as a leafless landscape in a claimed midsummer recording or a building that did not yet exist.
Historical weather is a consistency check, not a timestamp. A clear day in the forecast does not prove the video was recorded then, and a weather mismatch may reflect a nearby station, a different hour, or a false location claim. State the narrowest defensible result—such as “no earlier than the earliest matching post” or “compatible with late winter, exact date undetermined”—instead of selecting a date merely because it appears in a caption.

5. Geolocate the camera using multiple features
Inventory features before opening a map
Freeze wide frames and make a list of visible, potentially stable features: building outlines, roof pitches, water towers, church spires, transmission pylons, road curves, intersections, rail lines, shorelines, hills, and skyline gaps. Note their relative positions and approximate distances. A single tree or advertising sign is weak evidence because it can move or change; a combination of a road bend, a distinctive roof, and a ridge line is stronger.
Search from broad to narrow
- Use language, road markings, terrain, and climate to narrow the country or region.
- Search maps for unusual combinations, such as a divided road beside a railroad and a sharply angled river.
- Inspect satellite imagery for the overall road and building pattern.
- Use ground-level imagery where available to check façades, signs, poles, and camera height.
- Align the video’s perspective with the candidate location. Compare feature order, spacing, horizon height, and camera orientation rather than relying on one resemblance.
- Check imagery dates. A satellite image taken years after the recording may show a replacement building; an image from before construction cannot disprove a feature visible later.
Bellingcat’s A Beginner’s Guide to Geolocating Videos (9 July 2014) emphasizes matching several scene details, while its Searching the Earth: Essential Geolocation Tools for Verification (25 July 2015) highlights the importance of map coverage and imagery dates. Use those principles even when the available imagery is incomplete or captured from a different angle.
Document a reproducible match
For each proposed location, save the map or imagery date, coordinates or a precise description, viewing direction, and screenshots showing the matched features. Draw or describe the correspondence: “the triangular roof is left of the tower in both views, and the road bends behind it.” Include disconfirming details, such as a missing chimney or an incompatible skyline. A location is persuasive when another investigator can repeat the comparison and reach the same result.
Recommended Free Tools
| Strength of location evidence | Typical basis | Appropriate wording |
|---|---|---|
| Strong | Three or more distinctive, stable features align in perspective with imagery whose date covers the claimed event. | “The camera position is consistent with this area,” with the matching features listed. |
| Moderate | One distinctive feature and several broad environmental clues match, but imagery angle or date is limited. | “This is a plausible location; confirmation is incomplete.” |
| Weak | General terrain, architecture, or skyline resemblance without unique anchors. | “The scene is not uniquely geolocated.” |
| Contradictory | A stable feature, road layout, or terrain relationship cannot exist at the claimed place. | “The stated location is inconsistent with the visible scene.” |
6. Compare tools by what they actually test
No single service verifies a video. Choose tools according to the claim you are testing and preserve results so they can be independently checked.
| Method or tool category | Searches or exposes | Best use | Limitations |
|---|---|---|---|
| Reverse-image search | Still images and indexed pages. | Finding earlier thumbnails, screenshots, or visually similar frames. | Mirroring, cropping, color changes, and unindexed posts can defeat matching; visual similarity is not identity. |
| Video keyframe and duplicate analysis | Selected frames and repeated sequences. | Locating near-duplicate videos and identifying edits or reused footage. | Short, low-resolution, private, or heavily transformed videos may produce no result. |
| Social and text search | Captions, phrases, usernames, hashtags, and repost trails. | Finding chronology and eyewitness context. | Deleted posts, changed handles, search ranking, and copied captions can obscure the earliest appearance. |
| Metadata inspection | Container fields, encoder details, dimensions, and time fields when retained. | Understanding how a file was created or exported. | Fields may be missing, rewritten, or unrelated to capture; never use it as sole proof. |
| Map, satellite, and street-level imagery | Roads, structures, terrain, and skyline relationships. | Testing a claimed camera location. | Coverage, viewpoint, season, and imagery date may not match the event. |
| Historical weather and event records | Conditions and dated happenings. | Checking whether a claimed time and place are plausible. | Nearby-station data and broad forecasts cannot timestamp a file by themselves. |
Availability and platform access change. Record the service name, date checked, query or frame used, and result URL or screenshot where permitted. A result another person cannot inspect is weaker than one that can be reproduced.

8. Worked example: the “Middle East Object” case
Bellingcat’s article Isn’t That A Balloon? Deflating a DoD UFO Video (24 October 2023) illustrates the method without turning one case into a universal explanation. Investigators geolocated the U.S. Department of Defense video titled “Middle East Object” to an area northeast of Deir ez-Zor by comparing visible features with satellite imagery. They then considered whether a balloon offered a mundane explanation for the apparent object.

One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchThe lesson is methodological: location and surrounding context can change how motion, scale, and identity are interpreted. Geolocation did not by itself prove the object was a balloon, nor does that case determine what appears in unrelated videos. Apply the same separation of observations, location evidence, and interpretation to each file.
9. Common failure modes and how to correct them
“The upload says it happened today”
Correct it by recording the upload as a publication date and searching for older copies. If no earlier copy appears, report only that the video was first found at that time in the sources checked.
“Reverse search found nothing, so it is original”
Correct it by trying multiple frames, crops, mirrored versions, text searches, and platforms. State that no indexed match was found; do not infer authorship.
“The metadata proves the date”
Correct it by identifying whether the file is an original camera output, a screen recording, or a social download. Compare fields across versions and seek independent weather, event, or imagery evidence.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →“One landmark proves the city”
Correct it by requiring several stable features and checking their perspective and imagery dates. A similar tower or roof exists in many places.
Best Value
“A clear video must show a clear object”
Correct it by separating image quality from object identification. Compression, digital zoom, atmospheric haze, and focus can leave a sharp-looking clip with insufficient detail.
“A plausible explanation is a confirmed explanation”
Correct it by labeling alternatives as hypotheses. A balloon, aircraft, drone, planet, lens flare, or edited element may fit some observations without being proven by the available evidence.
10. How to write the final finding
Use a compact evidence matrix so readers can see the boundary between fact and inference.
| Claim component | Observed evidence | Assessment | Remaining uncertainty |
|---|---|---|---|
| Source | Earliest matching post and chain of reposts. | Original uploader identified, or repost status established. | Offline copies and deleted posts may be unknowable. |
| Date | Metadata, earliest appearance, weather, events, and imagery changes. | Exact date, bounded window, or undetermined. | Metadata manipulation and missing historical records. |
| Location | Feature matches, coordinates or area, and imagery dates. | Confirmed, plausible, inconsistent, or unresolved. | Limited coverage, changed structures, or insufficient landmarks. |
| Object interpretation | Motion, shape, lighting, and contextual clues. | Possible explanation(s), not an identity claim unless independently established. | Scale, distance, camera artifacts, and unseen portions of the scene. |
Use calibrated language: “shows,” “is consistent with,” “supports,” “weakens,” “cannot establish,” and “remains unknown.” Explain the strongest corroborating clue and the strongest contradiction. If the evidence only establishes that authentic footage was reused with a false caption, say exactly that; authentic pixels do not guarantee an authentic story.
11. Ethical and legal boundaries
Public availability does not erase privacy or copyright. Avoid publishing identifiable faces, private addresses, vehicle plates, or precise coordinates that could expose a vulnerable person unless there is a compelling public-interest reason and lawful basis. Do not impersonate witnesses, access private accounts, bypass platform controls, or distribute copyrighted footage beyond what is permitted. When contacting an uploader, ask for the original file and recording context without revealing sensitive investigative details that could encourage staged evidence.
Preserve uncertainty in screenshots and reports. Do not remove a watermark, crop out a contradiction, or enhance a frame without keeping the unaltered version alongside the processed one. Label every enhancement as a transformation, because sharpening or frame interpolation can create details that were not recorded.
What this process can—and cannot—establish
Careful provenance, date assessment, and geolocation can show that a clip predates a recent claim, identify a likely camera area, expose a recycled video, or demonstrate that a stated location is impossible. They can also reveal that the footage is genuine but the caption is false or the interpretation is exaggerated.
Those findings do not establish extraterrestrial origin. Even a verified original recording at a verified place and time may leave the object’s identity unresolved. The defensible endpoint is an evidence-bounded statement: what the file is, where and when it can be placed, which explanations fit, which claims fail, and what additional evidence would be needed to decide between the remaining possibilities.
