Assume a familiar voice is unverified. If a caller sounds exactly like a relative, friend, bank employee or official, pause the conversation, send no money or sensitive information, and call the person or organization back using a number you already trust or independently find. Caller ID, emotional urgency and even a convincing voice are not proof of identity.
Why a familiar voice is no longer proof of identity
Voice-cloning software can create a convincing imitation from a short recording. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) said in a March 20, 2023, consumer alert that a scammer needs only a short audio clip of a family member and a voice-cloning program to sound like that person. The FBI has likewise warned that criminals generate short clips of a loved one’s voice to demand immediate financial help or ransom, and can use AI audio to impersonate public figures or personal contacts.

That makes the voice an emotional cue rather than an authentication factor. You may recognize the accent, laugh, rhythm and familiar expressions and still be speaking with a criminal. A scammer may also combine the cloned audio with a spoofed phone number, details copied from social media or information stolen in an earlier breach.

The seven-step response to a suspicious call
Use this sequence whenever a caller who sounds familiar asks for money, account access, secrecy or an urgent action.
- Stop the transaction. Do not provide an account number, password, one-time code, gift-card number, cryptocurrency payment, wire transfer or payment-app transfer. Do not read a security code aloud, even if the caller claims to be helping you prevent fraud.
- Break the pressure. Urgency and secrecy are control tactics. Take a breath, put the phone on speaker if that helps you think, and tell the caller you will verify the request independently.
- End or pause the call. Say, “I’m going to call you back on the number I have saved.” Hang up before making the verification call. Never use a callback number, link or contact card supplied during the unexpected call.
- Call independently. Use a number already stored in your contacts, one printed on an official statement or payment card, or one you find independently on the organization’s genuine website or paperwork. The FBI recommends researching the person or organization and calling directly.
- Use a prearranged secret. Families can agree on a word or phrase to use when a call is unusual. Ask for it after you have paused the transaction. You can also ask an unexpected question only the real person would know, but a correct answer is supporting evidence, not sole proof.
- Add a second channel. Call another relative, a colleague, a bank branch or the organization’s published main line. A caller who insists that you keep the conversation secret is giving you a reason to involve someone else.
- Preserve evidence and report. Keep the number, voicemail, messages, timestamps, payment instructions, transaction records and account details. Report consumer fraud to the FTC and financial fraud to the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3). If you sent money or disclosed credentials, contact the relevant provider immediately.
How to make an independent callback safely
Choose a number the caller did not provide
For a family member, use the number in your contacts or a number you confirmed before the incident. For a bank, doctor, employer or government office, use the number on a statement, card, appointment letter or official agency site. Do not search for a number while following a link sent by the caller; open a trusted record or type the known web address yourself.
Call from a clean conversation
End the original call rather than placing the callback on hold. Some scams keep a line open or use a second voice to pretend that your call reached the correct office. Starting a new call through your own contacts or phone keypad removes that dependence.
Confirm the request, not just the voice
Ask the independently reached person whether they made the request, where they are and what they need. For an organization, call its published main line and ask for the department using ordinary procedures. A genuine contact should tolerate a callback and normal verification; the refusal itself is a warning sign.
Secret phrases and personal questions: useful, but limited
A secret phrase works because it is agreed before a crisis and is not supposed to be known by an impersonator. Set a phrase with family members and agree that an emergency never overrides the callback rule. Keep important contacts in your phone and on a separate written list so you can still verify if your device is lost or compromised.

Do not choose a phrase that appears in public profiles, old posts or commonly shared family stories. If you reveal the phrase during a suspicious call, replace it later. A caller who knows the phrase may have learned it from a compromised account or another family member, so use the phrase as one signal alongside an independent callback.
An unexpected knowledge question can expose a weak impersonation, but it is not an identity system. Answers may be discoverable online, guessed, obtained from another person or supplied by a co-conspirator. Never let a correct answer authorize a transfer by itself.

Requests that should end the call immediately
The request often reveals the fraud more clearly than the voice. Treat the following combinations as high risk:
- An emergency story that demands money before you can call back.
- Instructions to keep the call secret from relatives, a bank or the police.
- A request for a one-time passcode, password, remote-access installation or identity document.
- Payment by wire transfer, cryptocurrency, gift card or an unfamiliar payment app.
- A demand that you stay on the line while moving money or that you call a number dictated by the caller.
- Threats of arrest, account closure, deportation, ransom or harm unless you act immediately.
Legitimate organizations may contact you about a real problem, but you can still end an unexpected call and use their normal published contact route. A real emergency does not make independent verification unsafe.
What caller ID, voicemail and text messages can and cannot prove
Caller ID is a display feature, not an identity certificate. Criminals can spoof the number and name shown on your screen. A voicemail recorded in a familiar voice is still an audio file that could have been generated or edited. A text message that arrives immediately afterward can be part of the same impersonation attempt.

Use those details as clues about what to check, never as permission to pay. If the caller claims to be a bank, compare the request with the account’s normal alerts after signing in through your usual app or website—not through a link sent in the call or message.

Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Can an AI detector prove that a call is real?
No. Detection tools may identify characteristics associated with synthetic audio, but a result that says “human” does not authenticate the person, and a result that says “synthetic” can be affected by compression, background noise, accents or a short recording. The FTC’s April 8, 2024, analysis of approaches to AI-enabled voice cloning describes three possible intervention points: upstream authentication, real-time detection and post-use evaluation. It warns that watermarks can be removed or distorted, detection effectiveness varies, and there is no single solution.
Carrier analytics, warning labels, watermark checks and detection apps can therefore be supporting signals. They should never replace a callback through an independently sourced number, and they should never be the reason you send money.
| Safeguard | What it checks | What it cannot establish | Best use |
|---|---|---|---|
| Independent callback | Whether the real person or organization confirms the request through a separate route | It cannot help if you call a number controlled by the scammer | Primary consumer control before any payment or disclosure |
| Family secret phrase | Whether the caller knows a prearranged private detail | It does not prove identity if the phrase has leaked | Supporting check for unusual family calls |
| Unexpected knowledge question | Whether the caller answers a question not expected in the conversation | Answers can be guessed, found or obtained from another person | Additional clue, never sole authorization |
| Caller ID | The number and name presented by the network or handset | It does not defeat spoofing | Record the details for reporting, not authentication |
| AI-audio detector | Signals associated with generated or manipulated sound | It does not identify the human speaker and can produce uncertain results | Optional warning signal while you follow the callback rule |
| Watermark or carrier warning | Metadata or network-level indicators, when available | Watermarks may be removed or distorted; coverage and accuracy vary | Extra context, never permission to transact |
When comparing any safeguard, ask seven questions: Is the verification channel independent? Can the caller spoof or control it? Does it authenticate a person or merely detect audio? Can you use it under stress? What data does it retain? Is it accessible to everyone involved? What is your fallback if the trusted contact cannot be reached?
What to do in common situations
A relative says they are stranded or arrested
Do not announce the secret phrase or negotiate while frightened. End the call, use your saved number to reach the relative, and contact another family member or a relevant local authority through an independently found number. If the person cannot be reached, verify the story through more than one trusted contact before considering any payment.

A bank or payment provider calls about fraud
Do not provide a code or move money to a so-called safe account. Hang up and call the number printed on your card or statement. Sign in through your normal app separately to review alerts. The bank’s legitimate security process can continue after you have verified the contact.
An employer, school, doctor or government office calls
Write down the caller’s name, department and claimed reason without agreeing to anything. End the call and use the organization’s published main number or a number on an existing document. Unexpected demands for gift cards, cryptocurrency, wire transfers or secrecy are especially strong warning signs.
The caller leaves a voicemail or sends a follow-up message
Do not call the number in the message. Save the voicemail and message as evidence, then use your independent contact route. A follow-up message does not make the original voice more trustworthy.
You cannot reach the person you are trying to verify
Inaccessibility is not confirmation. Try another known channel, contact a second trusted person and wait for ordinary confirmation. If the situation involves an immediate physical danger, contact emergency services using the locally published emergency number rather than sending money to the caller.

- Agree on a family secret phrase and a callback rule while everyone is calm.
- Store important phone numbers in your contacts and keep a separate written copy.
- Tell relatives that a genuine emergency does not cancel the callback rule.
- Reduce public exposure of voice recordings and make social accounts private where practical.
- For banks, doctors, employers and government agencies, know where their official phone numbers appear on statements, cards and websites.
- Discuss which second person should be called if the primary contact cannot be reached.
These preparations reduce the chance that a convincing voice will force you to improvise under pressure.
Best Value
If you already sent money or disclosed information
Act immediately; do not wait for the caller to respond. Contact the bank, card issuer, wire-transfer service, gift-card company or payment app using its official contact route and explain that the transaction was fraudulent. Ask what cancellation, recall, account lock or investigation options are available. If cryptocurrency was involved, contact the exchange or service used for the transfer at once.
Change any password or security answer you disclosed, beginning with email because it can be used to reset other accounts. Tell the legitimate person or organization whose identity was impersonated so they can warn others. Preserve screenshots, call logs, recordings, receipts, wallet addresses, phone numbers and messages. Report consumer fraud to the FTC and financial fraud to IC3, including the timing and payment details.
What official guidance says
The FTC’s consumer alert from March 20, 2023, gives the central instruction: “Don’t trust the voice. Call the person who supposedly contacted you and verify the story. Use a phone number you know is theirs.”
In its December 3, 2024, Internet Crime Complaint Center public service announcement, the FBI advises: “Create a secret word or phrase with your family to verify their identity.” It also says to verify a caller by hanging up, researching the contact information for the purported bank or organization, and calling the phone number directly.
The FTC’s April 8, 2024, policy analysis summarizes the technology challenge plainly: “There is no single solution.” For consumers, that means a layered habit—stop, hang up, independently call back and involve a second trusted channel—is more dependable than any single detector or label.
The decision rule to remember
If a familiar voice asks for money, credentials, codes or secrecy, treat the request as unverified until the real person or organization confirms it through a contact route you chose yourself. A convincing voice can start a verification process; it can never finish one.
