How to Verify a Surgeon’s Credentials and Disciplinary History in the U.S.

Start with the official medical board for the state where the surgeon practices. Confirm the doctor’s identity, current license status, restrictions and any final disciplinary orders. Then cross-check the record through the Federation of State Medical Boards (FSMB), verify specialty certification with the relevant certifying organization, and ask about training and privileges for the specific operation. These checks help you verify credentials; they do not, by themselves, tell you which surgeon is right for you.

What to check, and in what order

  1. Identify the right doctor. Collect the surgeon’s full name, degree (MD or DO), practice location, specialty and, if available, license number. Match the profile to the person and location; do not attribute a record to someone based on a name alone.
  2. Check the state medical board. Use the official board or licensing-agency site for the state where the surgeon practices. Confirm license type and status, look for restrictions, and review any final disciplinary orders. FSMB recommends checking credentials and training through the relevant state board as an early step. FSMB consumer guidance
  3. Cross-check with DocInfo. Search the surgeon in FSMB’s free public DocInfo lookup for consolidated licensure and disciplinary information, license history, medical school, degree and specialty information. Use other-state entries as leads, then confirm important details with the board that issued the license. FSMB consumer guidance
  4. Verify the exact specialty certification. Search the surgeon and relevant specialty in the certifying organization’s lookup. ABMS offers the patient-facing Certification Matters doctor lookup for ABMS board certification. A medical license and a specialty certification are different credentials.
  5. Ask about the operation and facility. Ask what training prepares the surgeon for this specific procedure, how often they perform it, which facility will be used, whether they have privileges there for the procedure, and who will provide follow-up care. FSMB notes that consumers can ask about qualifications for particular procedures and that hospitals often require specialty certification for privileges. FSMB consumer guidance

How to read a board record

License status and restrictions

A state board profile reports the licensing status shown by that authority when you check it. Read any restrictions or conditions alongside the status; a current license alone does not establish procedure-specific expertise or guarantee quality.

Final disciplinary action versus an allegation

Do not treat a complaint or pending allegation as a proven violation. FSMB describes a process that can include jurisdictional review, investigation and adjudication before a proven violation results in public notice of disciplinary action. Terminology and disclosure rules vary by state. If an entry links to an order, read the document and note the jurisdiction, date, stated basis and any current conditions. Possible actions such as reprimand, restriction, suspension or revocation do not have a universal severity scale across jurisdictions. FSMB consumer guidance

Malpractice information

Do not infer a surgeon’s competence from a count without context. FSMB’s consumer guidance notes that practice duration, specialty, patient mix and geography can affect malpractice judgment or settlement counts. FSMB also says its Physician Data Center profiles do not contain malpractice information. FSMB consumer guidance FSMB Physician Data Center FAQ

What a missing or unclear result means

No result is not proof that no record exists. Check the spelling, state and identifying details, then contact the board that issued the license if the profile is silent, ambiguous or appears outdated. State disclosure practices differ, and FSMB says state license information reaches its Physician Data Center at varying intervals—daily, weekly, monthly or quarterly. The Center’s profiles omit malpractice information. FSMB’s state-board guide says its underlying board information was supplied during 2020, so use the current state board for up-to-date, state-specific details.
