Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →The safest way to check a Samsung Galaxy is to perform two separate investigations: verify that the hardware, model and software are really the Samsung product advertised, then check every relevant IMEI with a carrier or official lost-and-stolen database for the country where you will use it. A clean blacklist result does not prove that the phone is genuine, and an IMEI match on a box does not prove that the box belongs to that handset.
Start with the identifiers shown by the running phone, compare them with the handset and purchase records, inspect the model and software, and ask the intended carrier to screen the exact device before you pay. If anything conflicts, stop the transaction and use a Samsung authorized service center for a complete inspection.

What you are trying to prove
“Genuine” and “not blacklisted” describe different properties. Treating them as one test is the most common mistake when buying a used Galaxy.

Authenticity asks whether the physical handset is an actual Samsung Galaxy of the represented model and market variant. Evidence includes the IMEI and model reported by the operating system, the phone’s physical design, Samsung software, components, and consistent purchase records. Each item is corroboration, not a conclusive consumer proof. A counterfeit can copy the appearance of a Galaxy, and a copied genuine IMEI can be programmed into non-Samsung hardware.

Blacklist status
Blacklist status asks whether a mobile network may deny service to an identifier because the device was reported lost, stolen, faulty, or otherwise unsuitable for network service. GSMA describes a shared block-list system used by participating operators. A carrier’s “clean” response means that the service found no applicable report in its available data at that moment; it does not guarantee future service, universal carrier coverage, or genuine hardware.
Step 1: Read the identifiers from the phone itself
Use information displayed by the handset before relying on a seller’s photograph, a box sticker or an online listing.
- Open the settings page. On Samsung’s U.S. support path, go to Settings > About phone. The page normally shows the model name or model number, serial number and one or more IMEIs.
- Try the dialer code. Dial
*#06#when the model and network support it. The resulting screen can display the IMEI without requiring a SIM card. - Check Samsung Members if available. Samsung’s support material identifies Samsung Members as another place the identifiers may appear.
- Record both the screen and the numbers. Photograph or write down the values exactly, including leading zeros. Do not publish an IMEI publicly; it is a device identifier and can be abused for fraudulent reporting or cloning.
Samsung India notes that menus and available methods vary by provider, software version and model. A missing dialer response or a different menu label is not, by itself, evidence of a counterfeit. Use the About phone page and the carrier or purchase records as your primary comparison points.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteWhere else an IMEI may be printed
Depending on the model and market, an IMEI may also be printed on the handset, SIM tray, original box, carrier account information, invoice or other purchase record. These external records are useful for comparison, but the running phone is the starting point because packaging can be swapped and a seller can show a different box.
Step 2: Compare the phone, box and records
Create a simple comparison before handing over money. Copy the identifiers from each source rather than relying on memory.
| Source | What to compare | How much it proves |
|---|---|---|
| Settings > About phone | IMEI(s), model number, serial number | Best evidence of what the running software reports; still not conclusive because identifiers can be altered. |
Dialer *#06# |
IMEI(s) | Independent on-device display when supported; compare it with About phone. |
| Box label | IMEI(s), model and regional variant | Useful corroboration only; a box may be mismatched or counterfeit. |
| Invoice or receipt | Seller, date, model and identifier | Supports provenance; a document can still describe a different handset. |
| Carrier account | Device identifier recorded for the line | Useful for ownership and activation history; carrier records differ by country. |
| Physical handset | Model markings, SIM tray and construction | Can expose inconsistencies; visual inspection alone cannot authenticate every component. |
All matching values are a positive sign, not a certificate. A cloned IMEI may match a legitimate number belonging to another phone, while a replacement mainboard may explain a legitimate difference between an old receipt and the current handset. Ask the seller to explain every discrepancy and document the explanation.

Step 3: Confirm the model identity
Read the model number from the phone and compare it with the physical device and the seller’s description. Do not stop at a family name such as “Galaxy S” or “Galaxy A.” The precise model and regional variant can affect supported bands, SIM configuration, warranty and software.

Check the physical design
- Compare the camera arrangement, flash position, button layout, port type, screen proportions and SIM-tray location with Samsung’s specifications for that exact model.
- Check that printed logos, regulatory markings and model labels are sharp and correctly placed. Poor printing is a warning, not a final verdict.
- Look for signs that the back cover, screen or frame has been replaced. Refurbishment is not automatically counterfeit, but a seller should disclose major replacement parts.
Check the installed software
A genuine Galaxy normally presents Samsung’s Android interface, Samsung settings categories and expected update mechanisms for its market. Compare the reported model with the software build, security-patch information, language options and available Samsung applications. Samsung Colombia’s guidance specifically recommends reviewing the IMEI, installed software and components while warning that no consumer self-check is 100% infallible.
Do not treat the presence of a Samsung logo or a familiar-looking launcher as proof. Counterfeit phones can imitate the interface, and a genuine phone may have been reset, modified or sold with a different regional firmware. The question is whether the complete combination of model, software and hardware makes sense for one device.
Step 4: Understand the IMEI before checking it
GSMA describes an IMEI as a 15-digit unique identifier. Its structure includes a Type Allocation Code (TAC), a serial number and a check digit.
What the TAC can tell you
The TAC allocation associates an identifier range with a manufacturer, model and selected device capabilities. It can therefore flag an obvious mismatch: for example, a TAC associated with a different model than the phone being sold. It is not a complete authenticity certificate. TAC information does not prove that the particular physical handset is genuine, that all components are original, or that the IMEI has not been copied.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Check the number carefully
- Count all 15 digits and preserve leading zeros.
- Compare each digit from the phone’s About phone page with the dialer result.
- For a used phone, ask the carrier to screen the exact IMEI rather than relying on a generic online “IMEI checker.”
- Keep a written record of the date, country, carrier and result because databases and ownership status can change.
An invalid format or an identifier that appears to belong to another model is a reason to pause. It is not a reason to “fix” the number yourself; altered identifiers can create legal and network-service problems.

Step 5: Check blacklist status through the right regional route
Use the network that you intend to use and a service appropriate to that country. Blacklist data is not one universal, permanent database visible in exactly the same way everywhere.
Ask the intended carrier first
Give the carrier the exact IMEI and ask whether it can be activated on your plan. Ask specifically whether the identifier is reported lost or stolen, barred for non-payment, incompatible with the network, or subject to another restriction. A carrier may know of an account or financing issue that a public checker does not show.
Understand the U.S. consumer checker
In the United States, CTIA announced a consumer Stolen Phone Checker that accepts an IMEI, MEID or ESN and reports lost-or-stolen status. CTIA says a red result means wireless service may be blocked. The public description dates from 2017, so confirm that the service is still operating, understand its current coverage and treat the intended carrier’s response as the final practical check.
Understand shared operator lists
GSMA says its Device Registry exchanges blocked IMEIs among participating network operators. Participation and data timing matter. A result from one checker may not include every carrier, country or newly reported device. A “not found” response is therefore limited to that service’s data at the time of the query.
Do not infer authenticity from a clean result
A counterfeit handset can carry a copied IMEI that has not yet been reported. Conversely, a genuine phone can be blocked after it is reported stolen or after an account problem. Always complete the authenticity checks separately.
Step 6: Check every IMEI on a dual-SIM Galaxy
Dual-SIM phones can expose more than one IMEI because each cellular slot may have its own identifier. Samsung guidance explains that the number of IMEIs depends on the number of SIM slots.

- Open About phone and record IMEI1 and IMEI2, if both are shown.
- Use
*#06#when supported and confirm that the same values appear. - Ask the carrier or regional checker which identifier it requires. A Samsung regional check page may request IMEI1 for that particular check, while a carrier may need both.
- Test each SIM slot or eSIM profile only after the carrier confirms that the device is eligible.
Do not assume that a clean IMEI1 automatically clears IMEI2. The identifiers can have different histories, and a regional service may screen only the number it requests.
Step 7: Inspect a used phone before you pay
Perform the checks while the seller is present and the handset is connected to a reliable network or Wi-Fi.
- Confirm the seller’s identity and return terms. Obtain a receipt naming the model and IMEI. Prefer a payment method with a dispute process.
- Restart the phone. Confirm that it boots into the expected Samsung software and is not locked to a previous owner’s Google or Samsung account.
- Open About phone. Record all IMEIs, the model number, serial number and software information.
- Compare records. Match the phone with the box, invoice and listing. Photograph discrepancies before discussing them.
- Inspect hardware. Check the frame, screen, cameras, buttons, charging port, SIM tray and regulatory markings for model-consistent construction.
- Check network eligibility. Ask the intended carrier to screen every required identifier before completing the sale.
- Test the basics. With the seller’s permission, place a call, connect to mobile data, test Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, insert or activate the intended SIM, and verify that cameras and biometric sensors work.
- Save evidence. Keep the receipt, listing, messages, photographs and carrier result until the return period has expired.
A seller who refuses to show the About phone page, will not provide an IMEI for carrier screening, or pressures you to pay before checks are complete is presenting a transaction risk regardless of how convincing the handset looks.

The phone and box have different IMEIs
Pause the purchase. The box may belong to another device, or the phone may have had a board replacement. Require documentation and a carrier check of the IMEI currently reported by the phone. Do not accept a promise that the box number is “the important one.”
The IMEI matches, but the model or software does not
Treat this as a high-risk mismatch. A copied genuine IMEI is consistent with counterfeit hardware, and modified software can conceal the actual model. Ask for an authorized service-center inspection rather than relying on another free checker.
The carrier says the device is blocked
Do not buy or activate it until the carrier explains the reason and confirms in writing that the block can be removed by the lawful owner. Preserve the seller’s listing and messages. If you already paid, use the documented return, payment-dispute or local consumer-protection process; do not attempt to bypass the block.

One checker is clean and another is blocked
Give priority to the carrier on whose network you will use the phone and ask why the records differ. Differences can result from country coverage, participating operators, reporting delays or a typo in the submitted identifier. Recheck every digit and every IMEI before drawing a conclusion.
The phone works today but later loses service
Service can be denied after a delayed loss or theft report, an account decision or a carrier database update. Keep your transaction evidence and contact the carrier. A previous clean result is not a lifetime guarantee.
When to use Samsung authorized service
Samsung states that there is no completely infallible consumer self-check. Samsung Colombia recommends a complete inspection by an authorized service center when authenticity is uncertain; that page is specifically written for products purchased in Colombia, so service arrangements and warranty checks may differ elsewhere.
Escalate when identifiers conflict, the model and software do not align, components look inconsistent, the seller cannot establish provenance, or a high-value purchase leaves you uncertain. Ask the center to inspect the hardware and software, not merely to read the IMEI. Bring the handset, purchase records and any carrier result. An authorized inspection is stronger evidence than a screenshot from an unverified checker, although no service can change a legitimate blacklist decision without the proper carrier or owner process.
Country, warranty and registration checks
Samsung warranty, registration and support pages are regional. A phone purchased in one country may show a different warranty result, firmware variant or service eligibility in another. Use the Samsung site and support channel for the market in which the device was sold, and ask whether the exact model is supported locally.
Registration is useful for ownership records and support, but successful registration does not independently prove that every component is original or that the IMEI is free of a network block. Likewise, an imported genuine Galaxy may have limited local warranty or band support without being counterfeit.
Quick Recap
A practical decision rule
| Finding | Recommended decision |
|---|---|
| Identifiers, model, software and physical hardware agree; carrier confirms all required IMEIs are eligible. | Proceed only with a written receipt, clear return terms and preserved evidence. |
| Identifiers agree, but the seller cannot provide provenance or the checker’s country coverage is unclear. | Delay the purchase until the intended carrier confirms eligibility and the seller supplies documentation. |
| Phone and box disagree, or model and software conflict. | Do not pay; request an authorized inspection or walk away. |
| Any required IMEI is blocked. | Do not buy or attempt to bypass the block; resolve it with the lawful owner, seller and carrier. |
| Only a public checker is clean, with no carrier confirmation. | Consider the status unverified, not guaranteed. |
Common mistakes to avoid
- Checking only the box. Packaging can be mismatched, reused or counterfeit.
- Checking only one IMEI on a dual-SIM phone. The other slot may have a different status.
- Equating a clean blacklist result with originality. Blacklist databases address network eligibility, not physical authenticity.
- Trusting a logo or launcher. Counterfeit devices can imitate Samsung’s appearance.
- Using a checker without confirming its country scope. A U.S. result may not represent a carrier in another market.
- Ignoring the date of the result. Reports and blocks can be added later.
- Trying to alter an IMEI. This can be unlawful and can make network and ownership problems worse.
- Paying before testing the phone. A return policy is much more useful when the transaction and identifier were documented.
Final checklist
- Read the IMEI(s), model and serial number from Settings > About phone.
- Use
*#06#when supported and compare the result. - Match the phone with the box, invoice, listing and carrier records.
- Compare the exact model with the physical design, installed software and components.
- Use a carrier or official regional lost-and-stolen route to check every required IMEI.
- Record the checker, country, date and result.
- Stop if any identifier, model, software or component conflicts.
- Use a Samsung authorized service center when uncertainty remains.
