1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesYou cannot verify a private AI company’s revenue claim by repeating a press release or matching it to a database estimate. A defensible conclusion requires you to identify exactly what was measured, find primary financial evidence, read the accounting and audit disclosures, and test the figure against cash flow, receivables, contract terms and other context. If the company does not provide evidence appropriate to the claim, describe it as a management claim—not verified revenue.
The method below also answers a common source of confusion: ARR, bookings, billings, contract value and forecasts are not interchangeable with recognized revenue.

Define what “verified” means
Use verified only when the evidence supports the specific statement being made. An audited financial statement can support a conclusion about recognized revenue for the audited period and entities within the auditor’s scope. It does not automatically verify an executive’s forecast, a press-release total contract value, a customer-count claim or every transaction mentioned in an interview.

Step 1: Capture the claim before checking it
Save the original statement and record the details that determine what it means. Do this before opening spreadsheets or searching for corroboration, because later summaries often blur the wording.
- Speaker and role: identify the founder, chief financial officer, investor, customer or journalist making the statement.
- Exact wording: preserve qualifiers such as “over $10 million,” “crossed $100 million,” “on track for,” “annualized,” or “booked.”
- Publication date and as-of date: an interview date may differ from the period covered by the number.
- Measurement period: determine whether it is a month, quarter, fiscal year, trailing 12 months or a point-in-time balance.
- Entity and geography: note which legal entity, subsidiaries, products and regions are included.
- Metric label: write down whether the statement says recognized revenue, ARR, annualized run rate, bookings, billings, total contract value, usage, pipeline or forecast.
Do not silently convert a rounded statement into a precise number. “More than $50 million” supports a floor, not exactly $50 million; “approaching $100 million ARR” does not establish that the company recognized $100 million of revenue.
Step 2: Classify the metric
Ask the company for its written definition when a label is non-GAAP or company-specific. The following distinctions prevent most false equivalences.

| Metric | What it generally describes | What it does not establish by itself |
|---|---|---|
| Recognized revenue | Revenue recorded under the applicable accounting framework for goods or services transferred during a stated period. | That customers have paid in cash, that the amount will recur, or that every contract is profitable. |
| ARR | A company-defined annualized estimate of recurring subscription or contracted revenue at a particular date. | Historical GAAP revenue, cash collected, one-time services, usage outside the recurring definition, or future renewals. |
| Annualized run rate | A current period or monthly result multiplied to represent a 12-month pace. | That the same pace persisted for a full year or that the amount is contractually committed. |
| Bookings | Orders or signed commitments accepted during a period, subject to the company’s definition. | Revenue recognized in that period; implementation, cancellation and delivery conditions may delay or prevent recognition. |
| Billings | Amounts invoiced under contracts, often including amounts billed in advance. | Revenue for the period; advance billings can create deferred or unearned revenue. |
| Total contract value | The stated value of a contract over its full term, sometimes including options, usage or renewals. | Amounts enforceable, collectible or recognized as revenue in the announcement period. |
| Usage or consumption | Activity such as API calls, tokens, seats or data processed that may drive a charge. | Dollar revenue unless a price, invoice and recognition policy connect the activity to revenue. |
| Forecast or guidance | Management’s expectation about a future result. | Evidence that the result has occurred. |
Is ARR the same as revenue?
No. ARR is normally a point-in-time annualized measure, while revenue is recognized over the period in which promised goods or services are transferred under the company’s accounting policy. A business can have high ARR and lower current-period revenue if contracts start late, implementation is staged, usage is variable or billing is collected in advance. Conversely, a period can contain substantial one-time professional-services revenue without increasing ARR.
Before comparing two ARR figures, ask whether both include services, usage, pilots, discounts, multi-year commitments, customers that have not gone live and contracts subject to cancellation. Two numbers carrying the same label may still measure different populations.

Step 3: Find primary financial evidence
Search in this order:
- Audited financial statements and the auditor’s report. Confirm the legal entities, period, accounting framework and opinion.
- Regulator filings. A private company may have filings because of its jurisdiction, securities issuance, debt, a public subsidiary or another reporting obligation. Read the filing itself rather than a database summary.
- Company financial statements and notes. Request the complete statement package, including revenue, deferred revenue, receivables, cash-flow and commitments notes.
- Contracts, invoices and customer evidence. These may be available only under confidentiality, but ask what evidence supports contract existence, delivery, acceptance, pricing and collectability.
- Management announcements and interviews. Use these to identify the claim and its definition. Treat them as attributed statements unless primary financial evidence supports them.
If no filing, audited statement or other appropriate primary record is available, do not replace that gap with an estimate from a data vendor, a hiring page, web traffic or an unattributed article. State that the claim could not be independently verified from public evidence.
Step 4: Read the accounting policy and audit opinion
Confirm the scope
Check the auditor’s name, the period covered, the entities consolidated and the accounting standards used. Determine whether the opinion is unmodified or qualified and whether the report highlights substantial doubt, material uncertainty or other matters. An audit provides reasonable assurance about whether the financial statements are free of material misstatement within its scope; it is not a guarantee that every public statement is accurate.
The independent auditor’s report in Aware, Inc.’s 2025 Form 10-K says: “Those standards require that we plan and perform the audit to obtain reasonable assurance about whether the financial statements are free of material misstatement, whether due to error or fraud.” The same report states that the statements were audited under Public Company Accounting Oversight Board standards and that the auditor did not give an opinion on the effectiveness of internal control over financial reporting. This is an example of the scope language to inspect, not a conclusion about an unrelated private company.
Read the revenue note
Look for the policy describing when control of promised goods or services passes to the customer, how transaction price is determined, and how consideration is allocated among performance obligations. Aware’s 2025 revenue note explains recognition when customers obtain control of promised goods or services; it describes software-license allocations that are typically recognized at a point in time and maintenance and professional services recognized over time, subject to the stated criteria. AI contracts may use different combinations of licenses, hosted access, usage fees, implementation and support, so do not import Aware’s timing into another company’s accounts.
Do not confuse an audit with a review or compilation
Different accountant engagements provide different levels of assurance. In an FAQ for its IRC 41 and ASC 730 directive, the Internal Revenue Service says an audited financial statement is accompanied by an independent CPA report and states: “Any other statement or report, such as a review statement or a compilation report that is not subject to a full audit is not a certified audited statement.” That explanation is specific to the directive’s context; it should not be generalized into a rule for every jurisdiction or reporting purpose. Still, when a company calls accounts “audited,” verify that a full audit report actually accompanies them.

Step 5: Follow the evidence trail behind revenue
Revenue recognition depends on more than a signed headline deal. For each material category, identify the evidence that would normally support the accounting conclusion:
- Contract existence: an enforceable agreement, identified parties, rights, payment terms and termination provisions.
- Performance: delivery, customer acceptance, service periods, activation records or usage data, depending on the promise.
- Pricing: invoices, discounts, credits, rebates, refunds, variable consideration and usage calculations.
- Collectability: customer credit information, subsequent cash receipts, disputes, overdue balances and payment history.
- Cutoff: evidence that transactions recorded near period-end belong in that period.
- Completeness: reconciliations from contracts and billing systems to the general ledger and financial statements.
Datavault AI Inc.’s 2025 Form 10-K illustrates the type of audit trail worth examining: its auditor described evaluating evidence about enforceable contracts and collectability, including payment terms and customer-specific information, when assessing whether revenue complied with ASC 606. That description does not mean every reported transaction was individually confirmed, and the report also says the audit does not provide an opinion on internal-control effectiveness.
Public disclosures rarely show customer-level contracts or bank confirmations. Their absence is a limitation to report, not permission to infer fraud or validity.
Step 6: Test the number against financial context
Revenue should make sense alongside the rest of the statements. Build a period-by-period view and investigate sharp changes rather than treating growth as self-authenticating.
| Check | Questions to ask | What a mismatch may indicate |
|---|---|---|
| Cash flow | Did operating cash flow rise with revenue? Are large receivables or contract assets absorbing the growth? | Revenue may be invoiced but not collected, or terms may be unusually long. |
| Accounts receivable | How fast are receivables growing? Are balances concentrated in a few customers or past due? | Collectability risk, disputed invoices or aggressive estimates. |
| Deferred or unearned revenue | Were customers billed before service delivery? Is the balance rising or being released? | Billings are being mistaken for recognized revenue, or delivery timing changed. |
| Customer concentration | What share comes from the largest customer or related parties? | A single renewal, reseller or affiliated transaction may dominate the period. |
| Margins and losses | Do costs of service, sales commissions and research spending fit the claimed scale? | Low-quality, subsidized or uneconomic revenue; alternatively, a legitimate investment phase. |
| Going concern | Does the auditor discuss recurring losses, negative operating cash flow or funding dependence? | Revenue exists but does not demonstrate liquidity or financial health. |
Arrive AI Inc.’s 2025 auditor’s report contains a going-concern paragraph citing recurring operating losses and negative operating cash flows from operations since inception. That example shows why a revenue figure alone cannot establish cash generation, solvency or durability. It is an Arrive AI disclosure for that filing, not an industry statistic.

A large contract announcement also needs careful treatment. A multi-year contract’s total value may include future periods, options, usage assumptions or milestones. Compare the announced value with the amount recognized in the relevant income statement and the deferred-revenue balance; never assume the full contract value became current-period revenue.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Step 7: Compare claims only after making them comparable
When two executives, companies or documents report different figures, align these seven dimensions first:
| Comparison axis | Alignment test |
|---|---|
| Metric definition | Are both figures recognized revenue, both ARR, or another identically defined measure? |
| Period and as-of date | Do they cover the same quarter, trailing period or point-in-time date? |
| Accounting basis | Are recognition rules, currency, consolidation and treatment of taxes or pass-through costs consistent? |
| Recognition timing | Are implementation, usage, renewals and milestones recognized at the same stage? |
| Audit status and scope | Is either number audited, reviewed or unaudited, and do the reports cover the same entities? |
| Customer and contract support | Are contracts enforceable, delivered and collectible, or merely announced? |
| Cash and receivables | Do operating cash flow, receivables and deferred revenue support the direction and scale? |
Only after these alignments should you calculate growth or claim that one figure is larger. A company-reported ARR figure and a competitor’s audited annual revenue are different measurements even when their dollar amounts look similar.
What to do when evidence is limited
If the company provides only an interview or press release
Quote the wording, identify the speaker and date, and label it a management claim. Ask for the metric definition, period, included entities and reconciliation to financial statements. If the company does not answer, report the unanswered questions rather than upgrading the claim to fact.
If statements exist but are unaudited
Use them as company-reported financial information and identify the absence of an independent audit. Explain whether a review or compilation was performed, without calling it a full audit.
Best Value
If an audit is qualified or scope is narrow
Describe the qualification or scope limitation and restrict the conclusion to what the report covers. An audit of one subsidiary cannot verify consolidated group revenue, and an opinion with a material qualification requires more caution than an unmodified opinion.
If customer evidence is confidential
Say that contracts, invoices or receipts were not publicly available. You can describe the auditor’s disclosed procedures or management’s explanation, but do not imply that confidential evidence was independently inspected when it was not.
Write the conclusion at the evidence level
Use precise formulations that preserve uncertainty:
Recommended Free Tools
- Audited result: “The audited financial statements report recognized revenue of X for the year ended [date], for the entities covered by the opinion.”
- Company metric: “Management reported ARR of X as of [date], using its stated definition; the figure is not the same as recognized revenue.”
- Partial support: “The filing supports X of recognized revenue, while the larger announced contract value includes future periods or other components.”
- Unverified claim: “The company stated X, but no public audited statement or equivalent primary evidence was located, so the claim could not be independently verified.”
Avoid categorical words such as “fake,” “proven” or “fraud” unless separate evidence establishes them. An evidence gap is not proof of misconduct, and an audit is not proof of every promotional assertion.
A repeatable checklist
- Copy the exact claim, speaker, source, date and period.
- Classify the measure as recognized revenue, ARR, run rate, bookings, billings, contract value, usage or forecast.
- Define the entities, currency, geography and customers included.
- Locate filings, complete financial statements, notes and any audit report.
- Check the auditor, accounting framework, opinion, period and scope.
- Read the revenue-recognition policy and identify timing for licenses, hosted services, usage and professional services.
- Trace contract existence, delivery or acceptance, invoices, cash receipts, receivables and collectability where evidence is available.
- Compare revenue with operating cash flow, receivables, deferred revenue, concentration, margins, losses and going-concern language.
- Align definitions and periods before comparing claims.
- Publish a conclusion no stronger than the evidence: audited recognized revenue, company-reported metric or unverified management claim.
Because private-company disclosure duties vary by jurisdiction, financing structure and legal entity, the absence of a public filing may be normal. It still means that a public reader cannot independently verify the number from that source alone.
